Intuitive and pragmatic, embracing the free flow of indoor and outdoor space, the houses designed in California by R.M. Schindler are among the most celebrated examples of 20th-century domestic architecture in the United States. Yet it took decades for the Austrian émigré, who died in 1953, to convince the East Coast architecture establishment that his kind of modernism was worthy.

While his sometime colleague Richard Neutra pursued the Corbusian ideal of the house as a "machine for living," Schindler designed organic forms--angled walls, variously sized windows, plans that shift off-axis--that respond to multiple aspects of the individual site.

In 1921, while still employed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Schindler designed the tilt-up concrete Kings Road House for himself and his wife, Pauline. This landmark early project--fulfilling, in his words, "the basic requirements for a camper's shelter"--was designed to be shared with a contractor friend and his wife. The house became a haven for fellow bohemians, a scene entertainingly described in one chapter of this excellent and copiously illustrated study of Schindler's contribution to modernism and the architecture of Los Angeles.

During the following years, the "rustic complexity" of the Lovell Beach House (1922-26) gave way to increasing international style influence, visible in the John J. Buck Residence (1934), with its flat roofs and sliding walls of glass. Schindler's late work explored increasingly personal forms of "space architecture," culminating in the delicate crow's nest design of the Ellen Janson Residence (1948-49).

This book accompanies an exhibition that travels to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. (June 28 to October 7, 2001) and then to the MAK Center in Vienna (November 13, 2001, to February 5, 2002). --Cathy Curtis

Book Description

“The spirit of Schindler warms the works of all of us who were touched by his life.”

—Frank O. Gehry

“He is the most important architect in California of his day and deserves highly the attention given to him at last by his hometown, Vienna.”

—Philip Johnson

With such masterworks as the Schindler-Chace House and the Lovell Beach House in California, the Vienna-born modernist R. M. Schindler (1887-1953) is recognized as one of the most innovative architects of the 20th century. Nearly 50 years after his death, admiration for his breathtakingly original houses and apartment buildings is at an all-time peak.
Containing many never-published drawings and photographs and spanning Schindler's early years in Vienna, his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright, and his bold contributions to West Coast modernism, this book—which accompanies the first major Schindler retrospective—offers the most comprehensive view of his genius to date.

4 out of 5 stars R.M. SCHINDLER.......2007-01-18

Schindler in his day was much underappreicated, people just did not "get" his work, but as you look at his work through the prism of this wonderful book, you can see his influence on modern architecture is indescribable. You can see his influence especially in Richard Meier's work. It is a shame that he did not live to see his work so revered, but at least books like this one, with its insightful text and wonderful images, are out there for people to look through and marvel at his work.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one to have........2001-04-20

This book is a wonderful retrospective of Schindler's work. Though its easy to slip into hyperbole, this book is a must for the student of one of the last centuries most interesting architects. Schindler's work was overlooked in his day, some say due to not being chosen by Philip Johnson to be included in a very high-profile architectural show. Johnson himself has admitted his error! The book has several different articles on various aspects of Schindler's world, one focusing on his relationship with his wife, as well as presenting drawings, plans, photos of work-sites and social snapshots that are so important given the social nature of Schindler's work. A place to start or a place to refresh your studies. When they put this book together, they hit the nail on the head.

Book Description

R M Schindler (18871953) was a pivotal Modernist architect who remained largely unrecognized by the critical establishment during his lifetime. A pragmatist and theoretician, Schindler designed more than 500 projects, over 150 of which were built, most of these in the Los Angeles area, where he settled in 1920.

Trained in Vienna and influenced by two teachers, Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner, Schindler immigrated to Chicago in 1914, hoping to work for Frank Lloyd Wright. By 1918 he had attained that goal, and two years later he moved to Los Angeles as project architect for Wright's famous Barnsdall House. In his own practice, which began in 1922, Schindler synthesized the ideas of Loos, Wagner and Wright into his own original and distinct approach, which he called 'space architecture'. This book focuses on Schindler's influences and on an analysis of his buildings. It includes rare archival material and new photography by Grant Mudford, as well as over 150 redrawn plans, sections and diagrams.

4 out of 5 stars A proficient piece.......2002-04-11

Judith Sheine's new book on Schindler is most proficient. It is a good book written in a clear, concise way that accomplishes what most other books on this master architect have not been able to - in that it is a well rounded book that addresses the many facets of schindler's life and practice.

Sheine's book traces the architect's Austrian upbringing and schooling (Wagner and Loos) and Schindler's fascination with Wright. It interestingly compares the two architects and asks which was the first 'space architect'? Sheine elaborates on Schindler's theory of 'Space Architecture and the 'Schindler Frame' and classifies his work in four phases (Concrete and Radicalism; Plaster Skin Design; Experiments with materials and roof forms; and the Schindler Frame and translucency). She also addresses the architect's omission from the International Style exhibit and argues that his work, in fact, had no place in it. The book has a great chapter on his practice methods and concludes with chapters on his influence and reputation and the recognition that Schindler has received since his death in 1953.

Sheine's writing style is most competent as she writes as someone whom seems to intimately know the architect. Although this is not true, the author has lived in a Schindler building and has passionately pursued getting to know Schindler's life and architecture.

I have most of the books on Schindler, and this is my favorite one. Unfortunately, I could not give it 5 stars as Phaidon missed an opportunity with this 8x8 book format. The photos don't read very well and the plan and section diagrams, which are so essential to understanding Schindler's work, are postage stamp size. Still, If I had to choose one Schindler book, this would be the one.

2 out of 5 stars an objective review.......2002-02-11

I had to laugh while reading the reviews for Sheine's new book on Schindler. The irate review by Lionel March regarding the NY writer's comments (which are frankly right on) comes from one of Sheine's friends and collaborators in previous quasi-academic writings about Schindler. Gee - do you think she put him up to it? One would think that (after how many books on Schindler?) she would move on to more interesting ground. Incidentally, L. March declares that the book's supposed 'revelation' of Schindler's and Wright's tumultuous and mutually influential relationship is Sheine's alone. Ms. Sheine may be the first one to rush that newsflash to print, but it's been discussed in academic circles for years. It's a bit like saying that Charles Jencks discovered deconstructivism. Also lending his support via a previously written review is Michael Webb, another FOS (friend of Sheine). These reviews need to be acknowledged for the non-objective critiques that they are.

Frankly, the book isn't all that bad, if accepted for the soft theory that it is. The photos and drawings are nice, although I have to agree with Webb's account regarding the shabby binding; the copy I received as a gift is falling apart already. Buy it for your coffee table and pray that no one really looks through it.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty new.......2002-01-01

The review by 'Reader from New York' is frivolous. Her one star is for the photography of Mumford (sic). Grant Mudford certainly captures the genius of Schindler's highly individualistic architecture, but Professor Sheine's architectural understanding and sensibility is behind each photograph.

'Reader' compares Professor Sheine's monograph unfavorably with Taschen's Jumbo Neutra. She claims that Sheine adds nothing new. To pose just two questions: Had she seen previously the many cross-sectional drawings which express so well the meaning of 'space architecture'? Was she aware of the relationship between Schindler and Frank Lloyd Wright at the time Schindler was in charge of the Chicago office during Wright's absences in Japan? No, must be the answer, because this is all new and original and not to be found in writings by other authors.

This is a very welcomed addition to our knowledge of what Sir Colin StJohn Wilson has called 'The Other Tradition', or what Kenneth Frampton has described as 'Regionalism', in twentieth century architecture. Schindler -- in California -- carved out his own, very personal ground in the manner of Eileen Gray, Hugo Haring and others in Europe.

I quote from the review of Martin Fuller in the New York Times Book Review, 12/2/01:

"Judith Sheine's 'R. M. Schindler' provides a thorough, well-paced survey of his professional development, interweaving his biography and works to notable effect."

3 out of 5 stars Patron saint of LA modernists........2001-12-29

A valuable addition to a series of monographs from this publisher. This is Sheine's third book on the patron saint of LA modernists, following a pictorial anthology from Academy and a pocket guide for the MAK Center, and it is erudite and illuminating. If you were to buy only one book on Schindler, this should be the one. Books of this quality and importance deserve much better production values. The series is overpriced and poorly designed; the bindings are fragile, the illustrations drab, and there is not even a proper title page.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2001-10-14

This book had the potential to contribute to the anemic information on this fascinating early modernist architect. Instead it repackages projects and information readily available through other sources. The analysis of Schindler's work seems to border on cheerleading, rather than presenting a crticial dialogue about his ideas and built work. Check out Sarnitz's 1988 book (if you can find it) for a more intersting read on the work of Schindler. If this book aspires to the coffee table variety - which it seems to - it could have been more like Lamprecht's excellent ouvre on Richard Neutra, which is more scholarly and comprehensive. The one star received is for Mumford's beautiful photographs, which save the book.

It has been about 3 years since I wrote the first review for this book on Amazon.com. In that time there have been some new, and I feel better publications about R. M. Schindler

The most comprehensive Text is Judith Sheine's book (entitled R. M. Schindler) published by Phaidon. Please see my review for more details. Sheine is also the editor and narrator for two CD-ROMs produced by Planet Architecture. These are both excellent sources. Lastly is the lavishly photographed catalog for the Schindler Exhibit entitled The architecture of R. M. Schindler by Elizabeth A.T. Smith. This has good essays and photos although I feel is better as supplementry text to Sheine's new book

3 out of 5 stars Nice photos, light in content.......2000-04-20

I am an avid fan of this master architect/builder and I am pleased to see that Shindler is finally getting the attention he deserves. There is an abundance of material about Schindler now available to the public. Whereas, just ten years ago only a few books were available about Schindler (Gebhard and McCoy). This is a large format book with lavish color photos. Early books on Schindler, such as those by Gebhard, McCoy, and Sarnitz were small in format and contained equally small black and white images.

This book is divided into two parts: Essay and Selected Works. The essay, by noted California Author/Historian James Steele assumes that the reader has some familiarity with Schindler and the Wagnerschul. The author skips over biographical data on the architect, such as birth, upbringing, family life etc. and instead presents the reader with a concise, competent essay on Schidler's place in Early Twentieth Century architecture. The essay shows how Schindler was influenced by his mentors and peers such as Loos, Wright, Nuetra, and Irving Gill. It also touches on Schindler's rejection from Johnson and Hitchcock's International Style exhibit.

The second part of the book - selected works - presents the reader with thirty-two of the architect's built works in a chronological order. The selected projects include twenty-five houses, six apartment buildings/complexes and a Baptist church. Each work contains a brief description. About half the projects contain color photos. These appear to be recent photos and include many interior shots. Some projects, such as the Kings Road House and the Wolfe Residence contain reproduced color drawings (plans, sections, elevations) There are also a few renderings, color and b/w. Other projects are, disappointedly, not given proper attention. The Lovell Beach House, considered by many to be Schindler's masterpiece does not have the plans and section that are so essential to the understanding of this seminal structure. One project, The Grokowski Residence, contains only one, small black and white photo - not sufficient to give an adequate description.

The book also contains a map of L.A. with the architect's projects pin-pointed and a brief biography at the end. There is no bibliography that could point the serious scholar to additional sources, nor does the book contain any of Schindler's writings.

THE BOTTOM LINE This book contains nice color photos - some apparently previously unpublished, some good graphic resources. It is not a deep book, however it can be a nice compliment to previously published work on this master architect/builder.

Book Description

Lauded in recent years as a 20th-century masterpiece, Schindler House in West Hollywood was designed and built by Viennese emigré Rudolph M. Schindler in 1921-22. Intended as a communal dwelling for the architect and his wife and another couple, and featuring open living spaces and rooftop “sleeping baskets” suited to the mild Southern California climate, this remarkable home is considered the first modern house to be built in the world.

This, the first book on the Schindler House, features new photography—specially commissioned color images by Grant Mudford, one of the leading architectural photographers working today—as well as many archival shots. Author Kathryn Smith incorporates new research on Schindler as she analyzes every aspect of the house's design and construction and shows why it was such a radical departure from residential architecture that came before—and why it is one of the icons of the modern era.

I was looking for a book on Neutra and came across this beautiful book instead. The photographs, taken by Grant Mudford, give a vivid sense of space and relationship. He does an excellent job of capturing the light and emotion of the home. It feels much like a Japanese teahouse. Sparse and natural, bringing the outdoors in. Also included, a wonderful selection of archival photographs providing history and a glimpse of Schindlers personal life. Kathryn Smith, who actually lived at the house for five years, understands the spirit of the place. Her text covers Schindler's history, the house's structural engineering, and the philosophy upon which the cooperative dwelling is based. A truly inspiring home. The next time I am in Los Angeles, I will certainly make time to visit the Schindler House.

5 out of 5 stars Author's response to Jason.......2001-05-18

...My book was the result of over ten years of research in the Schindler archives, revealing new information and unpublished photos taken by Schindler himself. It is a monograph on one of the most important buildings in the history of twentieth century modernism. Half of the book consists of stunning color photos by Grant Mudford which were taken especially for this book. Grant has visited the Schindler House numerous times over the last ten years (as he lives in LA) and he has a great sensitivity and insight into its spatial qualities and how to capture this elusive character in light and shadow. The price of the book (even less on Amazon.com) is aimed at a general audience, especially students. It is an affordable introduction with sumptious photos and a text that covers history and analysis. The printing is excellent on very good quality stock; Abrams (the top art publisher in the US) did a superb job. I hope you make this a part of your library. Kathryn Smith.

"R.M. Schindler: 4 Houses" is the first in a series of new monographs featuring the works of individual architects by PlanetArchitecture.com. The four houses featured here are the Kings Road house (1921-22) and the How house (1925) which exemplify the innovative wood and concrete structures from the beginning of Schindler's career as well as the Kallis house (1946) and the Tischler house (1949-50) which embody the essence of Schindler's "Space Architecture" - complex interior spaces composed of "space, climate, light, and mood."

This CD-ROM features an intuitive, multi-referenced interface used to access the entire e-archive (electronic archive) of video interviews, photographs, writings, virtual reality panoramas, and drawings. The unique graphical interface takes full advantage of the interactive media and makes the self guided explorations both user friendly and enjoyable. This e-archive provides comprehensive documentation and virtual experiences unparalleled by any single medium. Over 100 full screen color photographs from exteriors and interiors to details document these houses like never before. 49 virtual reality panoramas (allowing 360 degree panning) take you there "virtually". Rare archival materials from the R.M. Schindler Archives reveal his masterful drawing skills. Judith Sheine provides an overview of Schindler's career in a 30 minute video presentation supplemented with drawings and photographs. Also, Sheine's audio introductions of each house (30 minutes in all) provide new insights into these notable houses. In addition, Lionel March's video commentary on Schindler's theoretical concepts shed new light on the otherwise unknown foundation of Schindler's architecture. Lastly, a comprehensive collection of drawings from plans and elevations to sections allow you to study and analyze each project in greater detail.

      Book Description

The Los Angeles architect Rudolph Schindler is regarded today as one of the central figures of the Modern movement. Trained in Vienna under Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos, Schindler then migrated to Los Angeles under the apprenticeship of Frank Lloyd Wright. Surrounded by a clientele of progressive thinkers in the emerging intellectual culture of Hollywood, Schindler created a radical and intensely personal architectural conception, resulting in some of the seminal works of the twentieth century. Gebhard's Schindler, first issued in 1971, is the only full-length account of Schindler's prolific yet unfulfilled career. The new edition includes 16 full-color illustrations of Schindler's renderings which were not included in the original. Charles Moore said, "David Gebhard's book about Rudolph Schindler was, for me, the most moving story of an architect that I have read since I was astonished at an early age by Frank Lloyd Wright's autobiography." Includes a preface by Henry-Russell Hitchcock.

If you are a true fan of architecture, specifically the radicalism of California at the turn of the 20th century, this book is one of the bibles. McCoy lived and breathed architecture, and she brought a very warm, humanistic perspective to her writing. From her years working with John Entenza at the ground-breaking California "Arts and Architecture" and the Los Angeles Times "Home" magazine, McCoy established herself as the spokesperson for several generations of architectural pioneers. Like Julius Shulman in her documentation of the past and (then) present architectural landscape, McCoy's work is inspiring. This volume (which was later followed by the excellent "Second Generation") covers Bernard Maybeck, Greene and Greene, Irving Gill, and R. M. Schindler. Each essay, complete with ample b/w photos, covers the careers and lives of these distinctly unique architects. In particular the work of Schindler, whom McCoy worked with as a drafting assistant for many years, McCoy shows the very human, personal side of this often confounding genius. I'm really probably just preaching to the choir here though... you should own this one.

4 out of 5 stars Essential to Own.......2004-08-28

"Five California Architects" is a good introduction to the works and lives of the architects profiled (The Greene brothers, Irving Gill, Bernard Maybeck and R.M. Schindler). The book consists of biographical essays on each architect (the Greenes are handled together) and various photos and sketches of buildings they each designed.

This book is more like five little books; one for each individual architect. There is little attempt to provide any linkages between them (although some links are so obvious that the style of treatment reveals them none the less); and little attempt to provide context. The style of writing is heavy on anecdote. "Five California Architects" gives the reader a good sense of the kind of men these architects were, but less of a sense of the position they occupied in the development of modern architecture.

Despite its short comings, this book is a must have for those interested in the development of modernist architecture in California, and I would recommend it to all those interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for California architecture and history buffs........2001-02-10

In addition to On The Edge of The World and Towards A Simpler Way of Life, this is a great book to have if you are looking for biographies of California architects. The book also features some nice close-up photos of architectural details.

            Book Description

As earthenware becomes once again the leading medium for studio pottery, this practical book is especially timely. Mary Wondrausch, an accomplished and celebrated modern potter, gives full instructions for slip trailing, painting and sgraffito, and explains her own techniques (using non-toxic materials) in detail. For up to a thousand years, European slip-decorated eartenware has been a valuable key for the social historian, as it employs the written word as part of the decoration, and in the true folk art tradition makes the daily life of ordinary people, as well as spectacular historical events, permanent under that most beautiful of surfaces, the clear lead glaze. The author, with a fine sense of history illustrates for potters and collectors the best traditional work from France, England, Germany and many other European countries, and draws the readers attention to the great exponents of slipware past and present. Includes over 100 photographs and drawings, and eight pages of color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Filled with photography of fine wares.......2002-03-21

Mary Wondrausch On Slipware is the revised reprint of Ms. Wondrausch's informative discourse on the history of slipware, from its creation to its development, marketing, and the many techniques and solidly practical applications involved. Filled with photography of fine wares, Mary Wondrausch On Slipware is a lavish and thoughtful presentation of wares as art, and very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in seeing and learning about practical wares preserved through history. Mary Wondrausch On Slipware is ideal as a Memorial Fund acquisition selection for academic and community libraries.
