Book Description
Long overshadowed by his contemporaries Charles Darwin and Thomas H. Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace was an English naturalist and pioneer evolutionist who researched biological diversity through extensive exploration and travel. Independent of Darwin, Wallace developed a theory of evolution through natural selection, which ultimately spurred Darwin to complete and publish his own Origin of Species. Famous for drawing "Wallace's Line," the boundary line separating the Asian and Australian zoological regions, Wallace's studies of the distribution of plants and animals pioneered an evolutionary approach to global and island biogeography. The Alfred Russel Wallace Reader: A Selection of Writings from the Field is the first book to reintroduce Wallace to a general readership beyond the cadre of scientists and historians familiar with his work.
Customer Reviews:
Historic Justice for A.R. Wallace.......2002-05-21
Jane Camerini has performed a great service to all who are
interested in evolutionary theory. Wallace deserves to be
regarded as the co-founder of the modern theory of evolution.
He also wrote on a wide range of scientific and social topics.
Camerini's introductory remarks to each of the essays in this
collection help put them in their context.
a Wallace reader for the layperson.......2002-03-05
Jane Camerini's slender anthology of Wallace's writings (and writings about him) is intended to provide an introduction to the great naturalist, primarily through his adventures in the field. Camerini has chosen a format for presenting this information very similar to that provided by another Wallace scholar, Barbara Beddall, whose "Wallace and Bates in the Tropics" was published way back in 1969. Camerini supplements excerpts from four books with her own introductory commentaries and a few additional Wallace essays, hoping that this will give the reader unfamiliar with his accomplishments some feel for them. I think she succeeds in this endeavor. The book is well organized and presented, including a number of interesting photos and figures, and Camerini's editorial commentaries are mostly right on target. Yet I cannot help but feel the brevity of the treatment will leave some readers puzzled. I'm not sure that the decision to include several essays of a more technical nature in a 200 page work was well advised; the gap between the fieldwork studies and Wallace's thought is considerable--not unfathomable, but not straightforward either--and the average reader may need more help than Camerini gives to appreciate the transition. Alternately, it might have been interesting to dwell strictly on the field studies--incorporating a greater diversity of excerpts--and then merely to refer to his future philosophical directions in a page or two of editorial comment at the end. Still, an interesting contribution to Wallace studies, and one which is likely to both complement and not duplicate the several others that will be appearing over the next months.

Book Description
Applied Mathematics: Body & Soul is a mathematics education reform project developed at Chalmers University of Technology and includes a series of volumes and software. The program is motivated by the computer revolution opening new possibilitites of computational mathematical modeling in mathematics, science and engineering. It consists of a synthesis of Mathematical Analysis (Soul), Numerical Computation (Body) and Application. Volumes I-III present a modern version of Calculus and Linear Algebra, including constructive/numerical techniques and applications intended for undergraduate programs in engineering and science. Further volumes present topics such as Dynamical Systems, Fluid Dynamics, Solid Mechanics and Electro-Magnetics on an advanced undergraduate/graduate level.
Volume I (Derivatives and Geometry in R3) presents basics of Calculus starting with the construction of the natural, rational, real and complex numbers, and proceeding to analytic geometry in two and three space dimensions, Lipschitz continuous functions and derivatives, together with a variety of applications.
Volume II (Integrals and Geomtery in Rn) develops the Riemann integral as the solution to the problem of determining a function given its derivative, and proceeds to generalizations in the form of initial value problems for general systems of ordinary differential equations, including a variety of applications. Linear algebra including numerics is also presented.
Volume III (Calculus in Several Dimensions) presents Calculus in several variables including partial derivatives, multi-dimensional integrals, partial differential equations and finite element methods, together with a variety of applications modeled as systems of partial differential equations.
The authors are leading researchers in Computational Mathematics who have written various successful books.

Book Description
This book is the third volume in this highly successful series. Since the first volume in 1989 and the second in 1993, many exciting developments have occurred in the development of simulation techniques and their application to key biological problems such as protein folding, protein structure prediction and structure-based design, and in how, by combining experimental and theoretical approaches, very large biological systems can be studied at the molecular level. This series attempts to capture that progress.
Volume 3 includes contributions that highlight developments in methodology which enable longer and more realistic simulations (e.g. multiple time steps and variable reduction techniques), a study of force fields for proteins and new force field development, a novel approach to the description of molecular shape and the use of molecular shape descriptors, the study of condensed phase chemical reactions, the use of electrostatic techniques in the study of protonation, equilibria and flexible docking studies, structure refinement using experimental data (X-ray, NMR, neutron, infrared) and theoretical methods (solvation models, normal mode analysis, MD simulations, MC lattice dynamics, and knowledge-based potentials). There are several chapters that show progress in the development of methodologies for the study of folding processes, binding affinities, and the prediction of ligand-protein complexes.
The chapters, contributed by experienced researchers, many of whom are leaders in their field of study, are organised to cover developments in:
- simulation methodology
- the treatment of electrostatics
- protein structure refinement
- the combined experimental and theoretical approaches to the study of very large biological systems
- applications and methodology involved in the study of protein folding
- applications and methodology associated with structure-based design.

Book Description
This monograph is the first handbook on the human hypothalamus. The human hypothalamus is an extremely complex structure and consists of a large number of very different functional units (nuclei) that are not included in the standard neuropathological investigation of the human brain. In fact, on the basis of their chemical nature, many of these functional systems have only recently been distinguished through modern neurobiological techniques. Since the finding that the hypothalamus contributes to memory and attention deficits in the dementias, that a disorder of the orexin/hypocretin system is the cause of narcolepsy, that hypothalamic hamartomas are responsible for gelastic epilepsy, that the subthalamic structure where depth electrodes are placed in parkinsonian patients is a hypothalamic structure, and that the source of cluster headache is situated in the hypothalamus, this perception of the hypothalamus as a neuroendocrine structure, of limited interest to neurologists and psychiatrists, is rapidly changing. Moreover, the hypothalamus now appears to be the basis of many signs and symptoms of disorders situated on the border between neurology and psychiatry, such as depression, eating disorders, aggression, and mental retardation. As a consequence, the hypothalamus has become a meeting point for neuroscientists, neurologists and psychiatrists, endocrinologists, and pediatricians, and as such is an important starting point for the new (3rd) series of the Handbook of Clinical Neurology.

Book Description
This is one of two volumes which together comprise about forty papers coming from the most outstanding contributions to the fourth European Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics workshop held in Marly, France, in 1999. These books cover a very broad spectrum of scientific research work from quantum-mechanical many-body methods to important applications and computational developments, and from atoms and molecules to condensed matter.
The first volume is subtitled
Basic Problems and Model Systems, which includes the following topics: density matrices and density functionals, electron correlation effects, relativistic formulations and effects, valence theory and nuclear motion. The second volume is subtitled
Advanced Problems and Complex Systems and covers the following topics: response theory, reactive collisions and chemical reactions and condensed matter.
