5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative.......2004-11-18

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso worked in a remarkable number of media. His drypoint prints look like they were made by a man enraged, or more likely Spanish. These are some of his linocuts, obviously made by the same hand.

First, please, don't dismiss block prints as kids' stuff. It's wonderful that the medium presents such a low technical barrier that it's accessible to many makers. That doesn't matter. A great artist can make better art with a charred stick than you or I can with a full studio. And he did.

Some are white-line prints ("Painter and his Model"), some are black-line (page 133), and some ("Dancers and a Musician") are both. Many use multiple blocks ("Small Bacchanalia"), others ("Bulls in Vallauris") are single blocks or ("Family Scene") reduction prints a.k.a 'suicide' prints. Some are delicate ("Head of a Boy"), but most are bold.

This is an amazing collection, with ten unique pages at the end. Clay impressions were taken from some of those blocks. They captured the individual tools marks in the original linocut, and showed just how his hand pulled each line from the lino surface. If you've ever made a block print, you will feel in your hand how Picasso created the image - an experience beyond words.

I'm not the one to fault the master, but I have to ask: what was his artistic reason for not sharpening his tools? Again and again (images #110, 118, 82, and others), the linocuts show a jagged line where his gouge tore the surface. I know that linoleum blocks are fragile and break with use (#82 again), but the ragged edge was not necessary. Or was it?

Anyway, it's a wonderful book. The color is good, the prints are incredible, technical information is adequate, and the commentary sinks out of sight. This book mostly just leaves you by yourself, with the beautiful prints.

    Book Description

"Wow! This is political art at its most powerful. These evocative images outrage and provoke, leaving an indelible impression of an unjust world at an unjust time. Scottsboro, Alabama will incite you to join the struggle for racial equality and justice." —Alan Dershowitz, author of Supreme Injustice

"A stunning artifact, Scottsboro, Alabama's narrative and images capture the tragedy of race in the American South. I haven't seen anything this tersely powerful in years." — Nell Irvin Painter, author of Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol

In 1931, nine black youths were falsely accused of raping two white women on a freight train traveling through northern Alabama. They were arrested and tried in four days, convicted of rape, and eight of them were sentenced to death. The ensuing legal battle spanned six years and involved two landmark decisions by the Supreme Court. One of the most well known and controversial legal decisions of our time, the Scottsboro case ignited the collective emotions of the country, which was still struggling to come to terms with fundamental issues of racial equality.

Scottsboro, Alabama, which consists of 118 exceptionally powerful linoleum prints, provides a unique graphic history of one of the most infamous, racially-charged episodes in the annals of the American judicial system, and of the racial and class struggle of the time. Originally printed in Seattle in 1935, this hitherto unknown document, of which no other known copies exist, is presented here for the first time. It includes a foreword by Robin D.G. Kelley and an introduction by Andrew H. Lee. Mr. Lee discovered the book as part of a gift to the Tamiment Library by the family of Joe North, an important figure in the Communist Party-USA, and an editor at the seminal left-wing journal, the New Masses.

A true historical find and an excellent tool for teaching the case itself and the period which it so indelibly marked, this book allows us to see the Scottsboro case through a unique and highly provocative lens.

    Book Description

Linoleum is not vinyl! The word "linoleum" has become a generic term for resilient flooring of all kinds, but it is NOT vinyl. Linoleum is a flooring product made of natural materials, including linseed oil, resins, wood flour, cork, limestone, and jute fabric. This fascinating new book focuses on vintage linoleum; more specifically the marvelous patterns produced from its invention in 1863 until its almost complete eradication in 1960s due to widescale vinyl production. Linoleum is also about the rebirth of authentic linoleum flooring in the past couple of decades, and the hope for a future in which linoleum receives the long overdue respect it has always deserved. Drawing upon their expertise in restoring and photographing old homes, the authors share the history and evolution of floor coverings generally, and linoleum in particular. With humor and insight, they single out the differing types and patterns of this durable product, discuss its care and maintenance, and list major resilient flooring companies where linoleum can easily be found. This is a must-have collectible book for anyone who ever played with toy cars on grandma's kitchen floor, or arranged their marbles to fit the curious patterns that stretched from corner to corner. Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is the former president of the historic preservation organization in her hometown of Oakland, California. Her books include Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms. Linda Svendsen specializes in architectural interior and exterior photography, and her work has been showcased in Camps and Cottages, Bungalow Kitchens, Bungalow Bathrooms, Old House Journal, Old House Interiors, and Lifestyles Magazine.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for.......2006-03-23

I was disappointed in this book, not because I was expecting a comprehensive reference work, but because it was so extremely narrow and artificial in scope. I had hoped to see vintage linoleum patterns in vintage rooms. Instead, the focus seemed to be on the rarest and wildest linoleum rugs - most of which were displayed rolled up - and all of which seemed to come from the same store in lower Manhattan. I could have achieved the same effect by visiting the store's website, which shows all the same pictures.

2 out of 5 stars "Linoleum" is Very Disappointing.......2004-07-19

I just renovated my 1949-50 ranch house's kitchen into a retro look from the date the house was built. I ordered "LINOLEUM" with great anticipation. It was totally worthless to me. My expectations may have been too high since I had not seen the book before I ordered it online. So before you order it, make sure you check it out in a bookstore. It made maybe a total of about a page worth of comments on current products. No mention of all on their durability or success in today's real world.

5 out of 5 stars An informative, and unexpectedly colorful history.......2004-04-03

While linoleum has become a generic term for a particular kind of floor covering, it's not the same as vinyl and has a long history as a popular residential and commercial use. Jane Powell examines the history and evolution of linoleum coverings, blending some gorgeous photography with a focus on home interior design which will please a wide audience. Any who would collect, use, or design with linoleum will find Linoleum to be a unique, remarkable, informative, and unexpectedly colorful history.

Never took a printmaking class in college...I've been carving erasers and wondering about this new world of relief printing. This book is wonderful.

Not too much information on complicated techniques. Enough info to have me working on new ideas. If you're beyond the commercial rubber stamps and/or are an artist hoping to incorporate printed images into
multimedia work...buy this book! Great reference! It'll fill in the blanks for those who have an art education but no basic printmaking.

5 out of 5 stars Simple prints, excellent results.......2001-05-14

This book is aimed at relief printmaking without a press using a range of techniques from linocuts through to using found objects. The techniques are clearly described and are applied to a number of simple but attractive projects such as single pamphlet books. pillows or cards. The photographs are clear and helpful. I particularly liked the fact that Gwen Diehn went through the clean up process, which is often not covered in much detail, and that she used vegetable oil rather than the more noxious kerosene. Throughout the book are a number of inspiring examples by past and present printmakers which help to extend the processes described. Whilst this book is aimed primarily at beginners, it offers stimulus and information of use to the more experienced printmakers too.

        Book Description

In need of a vacation after their last laser-beam-filled adventure, Lily, Jasper, and Katie have flown off for a restful stay at a distant mountain lodge, which just so happens to be hosting a gathering for characters from other middle-grade series novels. Two--the marvelous Manley Boys--look suspiciously like a pair of crime-solving brothers named Frank and Joe Hardy. Two others are a pair of boy-crazy twin sisters who attend a high school in some sweet valley somewhere. And then there are the Hooper Quints, who, along with a wealthy heiress's priceless diamond necklace, have suddenly gone missing.

Does it surprise you that the supposedly "on vacation" Katie, Jasper, and Lily are the only ones around who have the chops to solve this challenging mystery?

National Book Award finalist M. T. Anderson has done it again with this second volume of his riotous and wonderfully weird new series.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2007-01-28

Humorous parody that will hit home for anyone who grew up on the various "teen wonder pulp" series of the '40s, '50s or '60s (Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, etc.) I'll have to let someone else speak to whether it works for today's teens.

You can enjoy this without having first read its prequel, "Whales on Stilts." But I intend to pick up a copy, now that I've been introduced to Anderson's cast of characters!

4 out of 5 stars An exciting page-turner for children.......2006-06-24

Katie Mulligan is sick of life in Horror Hollow: the zombies, the vampires, the horrific practical jokes her mom and dad play --- it's all getting a little bit old. So when Katie's friend Jasper Dash, Boy Technonaut, receives a coupon for a free dinner at the Moose Tongue Lodge and Resort, Katie jumps at the opportunity for a few days away from adventure. When Jasper, Katie, and their friend Lily arrive at Moose Tongue, though, they are surprised to find that most of the guests, like Katie and Jasper themselves, are the stars of adventure novel series past and present.

There are the Cutesy Dell twins (dead ringers for the Sweet Valley High girls), the clueless but oh-so-macho Manley Boys, and Eddie Wax (whose best friend is a horse named Stumpy). All the guests are thrown into turmoil, though, when the Hooper Quints, stars of a series of 1950s adventure novels, are kidnapped and held for ransom in a remote mountain cave. Jasper and Lily join a search party, but Katie, determined to avoid adventure, lounges around the pool with her new friends, the Cutesy Dell twins.

Like WHALES ON STILTS!, the first book in M. T. Anderson's Thrilling Tales series, THE CLUE OF THE LINOLEUM LEDERHOSEN delights in over-the-top language and outrageous situations: "Freedom, alas, was far away. As Jasper listened in consternation to the screams of distress, he felt a creeping little feeling. It was inside his nose. His hay fever. It was getting worse." The plot is convoluted and absurd (just as a good old-time mystery story should be), and the novel makes dozens of references to other books and movies (for example, the Hooper Quints have a nanny who's a musical nun. When the outfits she sews out of curtains wear out, she makes them a new set of lederhosen out of the kitchen linoleum).

With its glimpses into the narrator's back story and its tongue-in-cheek tone, Anderson's Thrilling Tales series is fast becoming the heir apparent to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Stay tuned --- in the next installment, Jasper Dash heads for the wilds...of Delaware.

In serious need of a vacation after their last laser-beam-filled exploit, Lily, Jasper, and Katie have dashed off in their Gyroscopic Sky Suite for a restful sojourn at the Moose Tongue Lodge and Resort, a stunning spot filled with roaring fires, Cocoa Splurges, and many fine displays of taxidermy.
But in a bizarre turn of events, a number of other children’s book heroes also happen to be unwinding at the vintage mountain retreat, including the dim but well-built Manley Boys, the boy-crazy Cutesy Dell Twins, and Eddie Wax from the little-known classic Stumpy Rides to Glory. And then there are the adorable mystery-solving Hooper Quints, who, along with a wealthy heiress’s priceless diamond necklace and numerous mounted animal heads, have suddenly gone missing.
Meaningless coincidence? Or could it all be part of a nefarious plot involving duct tape, some Bavarian folk pants, and a slew of counterfeit dinner coupons? Tough to say, but one thing’s for sure: Katie, Lily, and Jasper are the only swell youngsters around who can solve this spine-tingling mystery
