Book Description

This description of a model system for cell differentiation and organogenesis is written by one of the foremost researchers in the area. The main emphasis is on the mammalian kidney, but the book also deals with the development of the transien excretory organs. It includes discussions of induction, proliferation, early cytodifferentiation and morphogenesis and organogenesis. This authoritative account will be valuable to developmental biologists and also to scientists working in paediatric nephrology. As it gives the background of normal development and of control systems, it will also be of use to nephrologists working on abnormalities in the urinary tract.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2002-11-19

This wonderful book is still referenced in almost every scientific paper published on kidney development some 15 years after it was written. The subject matter is essential background reading for anyone interested in induction of the kidney. Due to the timeless nature of the experiments described and the fundamental insights into organogenesis that they provide this will probably hold true in another 15 years. There are few scientific texts that one can read from cover to cover without becoming distracted, saturated or simply bored but this is an exception. The writing is extremely lucid and while addressing all key points remains concise and interesting throughout.

5 out of 5 stars The best source for mammalian kidney development.......2000-05-26

Excellent text covering nephrogenesis: in vivo and transfilter culture. Includes useful illustrations, photos of phase, brightfield and electron microscopy, lectin and antibody fluorescence staining and experimental data. Only downside: 1987 edition begging for update.

    Book Description

Because of their photosynthetic activity, plants represent the most important form of life on earth, and thus provide a rich and important source for investigation. By studying the levels of elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury in plants, vital information on background concentrations of such elements in the environments can be obtained. The growth in the use of instrumental multi-element techniques, such as neutron activation, X-ray fluorescence and atomic emission spectroscopy in the analysis of plant samples has led to significant advances in our ability to determine accurately the quantities of such elements present in plant samples. Instrumental Element and Multi-Element Analysis of Plant Samples: Methods and Applications presents the latest key advances that have taken place in a wide range of instrumentation, such as improvements in detection limits, reproducibility and accuracy. Potential problem areas such as representative sampling, sampling processes and accuracy are discussed in detail. Although concentrating on the analysis of plant samples, the book also considers general issues associated with multi-element analysis of environmental analysis in general. Instrumental Element and Multi-Element Analysis of Plant Samples: Methods and Applications will be of great interest to all those working in environmental analysis, particularly in the area of plant sample analysis. Its highly practical and inter-disciplinary approach will make it indispensable to chemists, biochemists, biologists and geologists interested in these areas.

          Book Description

The second edition of this widely acclaimed reference book collects together in a single volume the most important facts about all the chemical elements. Whilst retaining the alphabetical, easy-to-use format of the first edition, the opportunity has been taken to update information and to add
a new section on environmental properties to go alongside the existing ones on the chemical, physical, nuclear, and electron-shell properties of the elements.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars plain collection of data.......2006-10-19

I bought this book not realizing that is nothing more that two sheets for each element, collecting useful, but quite easily found data. Do not expect any written text. In the internet era, just look at the NIST site, I hardly see the need of such compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The Chemical Elements That Make Up The World.......2004-12-14

For the first time all the key facts about the 100 or so elements that make up the world. Easy-to-use in about 300 pages. This is the best book of this type that I have ever seen. "The Elements" is a handy reference for chemistry students and teachers and for the lay person who wants to learn more. You will learn the history and structure of each element and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference for Chemists or Chemistry Teachers.......1998-03-27

This is the book that I tell my students is my "bible." I use it in class in and in the preparation of my exams. The information in it is well organized and as up-to-date at it can be for the subject matter. Some of the "elements" are not there but that is because they were discovered after the publication date. I highly recommend this book to my colleagues.

            Book Description

Presenting a systematic approach to the chemistry of the p Block elements and hydrogen, this book also introduces some basic topics concerning chemical bonding, such as oxidation numbers, bond strengths, dipole moments and intermolecular forces. The chemistry is illustrated by coverage of the biological role of nitric oxide and of hydrogen bonding, and the new chemistry of carbon nanotubes. Applied aspects of the topic are developed in the two Case Studies, which examine the causes and prevention of acid rain and the inorganic chemical industry. The accompanying CD-ROMs cover silicate mineral structures, the inert pair effect and a database of chemical reactions of the p Block elements. The Molecular World series provides an integrated introduction to all branches of chemistry for both students wishing to specialise and those wishing to gain a broad understanding of chemistry and its relevance to the everyday world and to other areas of science. The books, with their Case Studies and accompanying multi-media interactive CD-ROMs, will also provide valuable resource material for teachers and lecturers.

Volume 4 expands this series to include inorganic compounds and elements in addition to the organic compounds covered in the first three volumes. The data are presented in graphs for viscosity as a function of temperature. The graphs are arranged by chemical formula to provide ease of use; many of them cover the full range from melting point to boiling point to critical point. Common units are used, but each graph displays a conversion factor to provide English units.

                Book Description

This book is an updated and revised version of the Oxford Chemistry Primer entitled Periodicity and the p-Block Elements. In addition to having updated and substantially rewritten parts of the first book, the most obvious change is that certain aspects of s-block element chemistry are now discussed explicitly and so this group of elements are therefore included in the title. The author has sought to provide an overview of some of the important trends (periodicity) found in the properties of the s- and p-block elements and the compounds that they form, and to provide the reader with some simple 'rules of thumb' whereby they might appreciate and better understand these trends.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Brief look at the s block........2000-06-06

This book is excellent provided you are trying to either refresh old chemistry courses or are trying to learn the bare minimum about the S block and periodic properties. The book is not strong in reinforcing the principles provided in it's pages.
