    Book Description

The mosses (Bryophatea, Musci) are a diverse and widely distributed group of land plants. Mosses are attractive experimental plants because they exhibit the traditional attributes of good model systems (i.e. ease of growth and maintenance, fast generation time, and amenable genetics) with the added advantage of a haploid gametophyte that allowed developmental mutants to be recovered with relative ease. And, in one of the most exciting developments in Plant Biology, efficient homologous recombination occurs in the moss Physcomitrella patens. The ability to perform efficient homologous recombination (i.e. gene knock-outs) in P. patens is at present unique amongst all plants and represents an extremely powerful technique for the functional analysis of many plant genes. From evolution and development to the homologous recombination and the creation of novel molecular tools, mosses are being used to elucidate fundamental biological processes in plants. This book provides a synopsis of the outstanding basic research being conducted using mosses as a model multi-cellular eukaryote.

      Book Description

A true introductory text for learning the spectroscopic techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infrared, Ultraviolet and Mass Spectrometry. It can be used in a stand alone spectroscopy course or as a supplement to the sophomore-level organic chemistry course.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for learning Spectroscopy!.......2007-08-17

I absolutely LOVE this book. I first bought it for my Junior year analytical chemistry class, and I still use it today in grad school. It is VERY good at explaining NMR theory. Anything I ever needed related to NMR or IR I found in this book. It is by far the most useful chemistry book I own.

      2 out of 5 stars Dated.......2003-04-11

Standard textbook outlining most spectroscopic techniques as taught at undergraduate level. However, contains an embarrassingly dated treatment of mass spectrometry which can not have been rewritten since the 1970s. No mention of the biggest MS techniques in use today (electrospray and MALDI), a glaring oversight especially in light of Fenn & Tanaka winning Nobel Prizes in 2002 for just these developments. And time-of-flight instruments having a mass range of 5000 and resolution of 200? Several years before this book was published, commercial machines were available with mass ranges well over 100,000 Da and resolutions of 10,000+. Not only poor, but misleading. Overall, a rather derivative book that seems to have been written largely by consultation of more authoritative work (probably an early edition of Williams & Fleming).

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Reference on Organic Spectroscopy.......2001-08-24

The new edition of Pavis might be the twin to Crews' Organic Structural Analysis. This text discusses the fundamentals of 1H NMR, carbon-13 NMR, infrared spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy. The book also includes a section on 2D NMR. Pavia should not be missed by advanced undergraduate students who pursue research and practicing chemists who need quick reference on interpreting spectra.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Introductory Reference.......2001-05-22

This book is probably the best introductory reference on spectroscopy currently available, and I've checked out pretty much every book on the market right now. I'm a chemist, and this book got me through my senior synthesis and spectroscopy lab. Proton and carbon-13 NMR, IR, GC/MS, and UV/Vis are all covered in the book. It includes many handy tables of characteristic shifts for NMR, characteristic absorbances for IR and UV/Vis, and a nifty table on common GC/MS fragments by m/e. The chapter on 2D NMR is lousy, but that's not really introductory material anyhow. The UV/Vis chapter is kind of cursory, but UV/Vis isn't all that useful.
This is a book that I intend to hang on to for a while.

4 out of 5 stars Great books for students in chemistry.......1999-06-05

I have found this book to a great tool for students of organic chemistry especially those wanting to further their education in graduate school or medical school. It is eay to read and can also be used a "teach yourself" book. I recomend this book to anyone who is a bit shaky in interpreting NMR, IR, and Mass Spec.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'.......2005-08-12

Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is, those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR.

            Book Description

Introduction to NMR Spectroscopy R. J. Abraham, School of Chemistry, University of Liverpool J. Fisher, Biological NMR Centre, University of Leicester P. Loftus, Stuart Pharmaceuticals, Delaware, USA This book is a new, extended edition of Proton and Carbon 13 NMR by R. J. Abraham and P. Loftus. The initial chapters cover the fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy commencing with an explanation of how the nuclear magnetic response occurs, followed by a detailed discussion of chemical shifts and coupling constants, parameters not discussed to any length in other textbooks aimed at a similar level of interest. Emphasis is given to the vectorial description of multipulse experiments, as this is probably the easiest way to grasp how different information may be gained simply by changing a pulse sequence. An understanding of multipulse NMR is a prerequisite for understanding 2D NMR. The section on 2D NMR begins with a discussion of the resolved experiment. This is a logical initial choice as the spectra produced by this experiment may be readily compared with 1D spectra. Following on from this both heteronuclear and homonuclear correlation spectroscopy are described and examples given. The final section of the book should be considered as an applications section. It is aimed at showing the reader that NMR is not just of use to the synthetic organic chemist but is also of use to biochemists for investigating the solution state structure and function of proteins, enzymes, etc. The application of high resolution NMR to the solid state is also discussed, thereby indicating the developments which have taken place as far as spectrometer hardware is concerned.
