Book Description

Spain owes its special historical position in Europe very largely to his intensive encounter with the Orient. In the summer of 710, a small force under the command of a Berber named Tarîf ibn Mâlik landed to the west of Gibraltar. The Islamic armies that followed in its wake succeeded in conquering large areas of Spain within a short span of years. The conquerors gave the country the name of "al-andalus." Thus began a period of cultural permeation that was to last for almost 800 years. In spite of intolerance and animosity, there developed between Muslims, Christians, and Jews a shared cultural environment that proved the basis for great achievements.

Moorish-Andalusian art and architecture combine elements of various traditions into a new, autonomous style. Among the outstanding architectural witnesses to this achievement are the Great Mosque in Cordova and the Alhambra in Granada, recognized and admired as part of the world's heitage right up to the present day. They are described in detail in this book. The main centres of Hispano-Islamic art and architecture, the cities of Cordova, Seville and Granada, are discussed within the chronological framework of developments, both political and cultural, from 710 to 1492.

The author traces the changes in architectural forms over the centuries, and concludes with an attempt to identify those enduring characteristics which run like a thread through Hispano-Islamic architecture, for all the different influences to which it was subject. Alongside mosques, castle ruins, and splendid palaces, the reader will find detailed photographs of Moorish decorative art in all its thousand and one variations.

5 out of 5 stars A Steal of a Deal .......2007-05-05

I am not doing this review to acquaint readers with what this book covers, for the above editorial review does that well. Rather, I want to make sure that readers know that in spite of selling for so little, this book offers all one would expect from a book published by Taschen: superb colored photography, line drawings, maps, a glossary of terms and, of course, good writing/explanations. Marvel at your good fortune at finding such a bargain, and be assured that the coverage of Cordoba's Great Mosque and the Alhambra is superb.

P.S. Just how much of a bargain? Change only the picture on its cover, and you'll find that copies of the paperback start at $39.89, the hardback at $119.99!

3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately unreadable.......2001-07-04

So sad, a very nice looking book with an interesting approach -- looking at Islamic art and architecture as seen through Western eyes over the last few hundred years. The book showcases some excellent reproductions of fabulous old paintings, historic photographs, and contemporary photographs. Why sad? because the narrative text is printed in light gray in a very skinny sans serif type that swims before my eyes. I admit I don't have perfect vision, but I can read most books perfectly well. In Moorish Style I can read a paragraph or two under a strong light, but it is so agonizing (actually nauseating) I soon give up.

Curse the art director who came up with this great idea!! .... Books have to be more than just pretty.

If it weren't for this 'slight' problem, I would give it four, maybe five stars. For the excellent graphics, I give it three.

5 out of 5 stars reviem from amazon.co.uk.......1999-09-20

Synopsis The architecture and decorative art of the Islamic world, particularly Moorish Spain, is illustrated in this book. It shows how it acted as an influence for designers and architects in the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and America. --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title

Book Information In the 19th Century a European fascination with the exotic Orient generated what has come to be known as "Orientalism". The costumes, landscapes and townscapes of the Ottoman, Arab and Mogul worlds inspired painters ranging from Delacroix and Ingres to David Roberts and even Matisse. When expressed in architecture and design, buildings and gardens, this phenomenon became known as the Moorish Style.

This style has been used in a vast variety of ways throughout the western world, appearing in gentlemen's clubs and synagogues, cinemas (often called "The Alhambra") and Tuscan villas. In this magnificently illustrated survey, Miles Danby examines the roots of the style in art and architecture throughout the Islamic world. He discusses the factors of space and pattern and the structural and decorative elements that are commonly found in mosques and palaces, whether in Mogul India, Ottoman Turkey or Moorish Spain.

Of all the buildings key to the style, the Alhambra in Granada is perhaps the most important. Expertly recorded by the great 19th-century designer, Owen Jones, its features were to inspire both public and private building into the 20th Century, and make concrete the exotic dreams of a number of wealthy aesthetes. This book, the first to examine the style from its origins to its contemporary manifestation, will act as an inspiration for architects and designers, as well as being a source of visual pleasure and stimulation for all.

This is an excellent book with the most beautiful photos of Alahambra. If you are spanish, travelling to spain or a muslim you must have this book. There are very nice maps too.

4 out of 5 stars Nice pictures and good texts.......2004-05-07

Recommended for travelers to Andalusia who want to get something more than they usually get from guided tours. Also good for all those who wants to see what poor Europeans did with great architecture of Moors.

I just have a love of architecture, for the art of it. This is a beautiful book. The photographs are breathtaking. The writing actually interested me in the history of an area I had never even thought about before.I would have liked to have seen some of the more humble ,common buildings though.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about comprehensive!.......2003-12-15

This is hands down the most comprehensive resource on all aspects of genealogical research in the Chicago/Cook County Illinois area bar none. I purchased this book when it was new and don't know how else I would have done as much Chicagoland area research without it. Without this book I would have had no idea where to start researching when visiting Chicago and really helped insure I got the biggest bang for the buck when there. Where Ms. Szucs really pays off is breaking out the various municipalities and even offers offbeat sources such as the Medical Examiners Office that I would NEVER have thought of and it's a good thing as I've used that as a resource twice now with great results. Yes, it would be great to have an updated edition with new area codes and telephone numbers, internet sources and the like, but I find those sources can get stale-dated pretty darned quickly! Mrs. Szucs delivers what you need to get the ball rolling and it's always important to double-check local numbers and use those available resources like Google.

3 out of 5 stars Where are the updates and revisions?.......2003-09-27

This is the same 1996 edition in a new cover. A big clue was the list of suburban Chicago libraries still with the 708 area code. Most of them changed to 847 in 1996.
I don't see any mention of the Internet either. There is a lot of info online for Chicago/Cook County research.

The basic information is very informative and I have helped several people by using this book.

I am awaiting the revised edition.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK ON CHICAGO GENEALOGY.......2002-03-20

Chicago is rich with genealogy records but if one does not live in or near this vast city it is very hard to obtain those records.

This book, however, has helped me immensely with the research of my husband's Irish Chicago ancestors - what to look for, where to look, where to write. Besides giving a brief history of Chicago and its records, it includes information about the great fire and the destruction of the vast number of public records. But then it gives hints on what to look for when these records are needed by the genealogist and what can be used instead.

The book is chock full of information of libraries, depositories, collections, addresses - everything the genealogist needs to research the City of Chicago.

Be sure to get the most updated version because addresses and prices do change.

                2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......1999-07-28

If you've been too long surfing the Internet, the Handbook seems obvious. There's nothing for the intermediate or advanced Net user.

3 out of 5 stars Well-written but out-of-date and not worth the money.......1998-03-18

Though well-written and thorough, I found many links and/or suggestions to be out of date already. Provides good advice about mailing lists, but I think there are better books at a much lower price out there.
