      Book Description

A lavish record of an extraordinary collaboration between designer and architect—and the catalyst for the William Morris style.

Red House occupies a singular place in British architectural history: it was the first and only house that was built for designer William Morris, and it was the first independent architectural commission for his friend, Philip Webb. The challenge of furnishing the house inspired Morris and his Pre-Raphaelite friends to found the design firm of Morris & Co., which was the flagship for what was to become the Arts & Crafts movement. Red House captured Morris' heart. He was only 25 when, in 1858, he married Jane Burden, whose beauty was the inspiration for much of Pre-Raphaelite art. With his young wife, he planned to produce a vision of "earthly paradise" at Red House; however, the idyll was found to be impractical, and Morris left after five years. Because of its illustrious first owner, Red House was never forgotten, and a succession of tenants kept Morris' spirit alive in the house; in 2003, Red House was acquired for the National Trust. This handsome volume provides both the story of Red House and a "virtual tour" that enables the reader to see how this splendid house looked and functioned when it was inhabited by the celebrated designer.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book, but needs to be UPDATED!.......2004-04-27

This is an excellent book, but some of these buildings are going by different names or have been sold since publication. There are many newcomers with beautifully designed serviced apartments that are not included in this book. My wife and I just spent 2 weeks at 49 Lancaster Gate which was an unforgettable, luxurious and affordable experience. They have a great website which really got our attention. There apartments are even better when you stay in them. Ours had a huge marble bathroom and jacuzzi bath and was very well equipped. The location was could not have been more perfect. We have also stayed at Mayfair House which was wonderful and 130 Queensgate which was smelly (our flat stank of cigarette smoke on arrival) and very badly furnished. Stay away from 130 Queensgate. Another excellent building is Somerset Bayswater, although Lancaster Gate is our favorite by far.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable, "must have" planning guide.......2003-10-10

The collaborative effort of Diana and Ronald Jensen, How To Stay In London For Less: Short-Term Apartments Ideal For All Travelers is a unique travel planning resource that will help the business or vacation traveler in London avoid the expensive and restrictions of hotel lodging by renting one of the hundreds of apartments available for rent or lease, either short term or long term. An average of 25% less expensive than hotel accommodations and offering a larger living area, apartments can be available for stays as short as a single evening! Each of seven major London neighborhoods are featured complete with a description of each block of apartments, the facilities available in each, the prices for rentals in American dollars, instructions on making reservations, a "traveler friendly" rating system, an historical sketch and map of each neighborhood, and recommendations for pubs, restaurants, and area shops combine to make How To Stay In London For Less an invaluable, "must have" planning guide for a truly memorable London experience.

5 out of 5 stars Less is More!.......2002-06-21

This is a book that all tourists would find helpful, especially those who are ready to really explore and get to know the city. It provides the insights of seasoned travelers on not only lodging (an extensive and varied collection of apartments), but the life of the city as well. Extremely well researched, well laid out - a wealth of information in accessible and very readable form. I highly recommend it and hope the authors are researching other cities while we're reading "London."

5 out of 5 stars An excellent travel book for Anglophiles!.......2002-06-15

This is the right book for so many of us who want to get to know London well. Live there for a few days, a week, or more in an apartment, with all the amenities. Surprisingly affordable. This book is full of the details you need, right down to what furniture is in the room. Photos, too. Lots of information about food and sights in the neighborhoods. You can't miss with this book - Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars London for Less Will Pay for Itself Many Times Over!.......2002-03-17

This delightful and thoroughly researched book lets the reader in on all sorts of information about London that the authors have gleaned in yearly visits over more than 20 years. Learn not only about the best places to stay at the best prices, but exactly how they are furnished and what is available in the neighborhood. Doni't skip the first chapter, its a delight and sets the tone for the rest of the book. After reading about several neighborhoods, I was ready to pack to my bags! The organization is well planned and makes the book very user friendly. Not only do you learn about accomodations, but how to contact the managers and how to get to the neighborhood from the airport! A true gem.

        Book Description

In urban studies, the nineteenth century is the "age of great cities." In feminist studies, it is the era of the separate domestic sphere. But what of the city's homes? In the course of answering this question, Apartment Stories provides a singular and radically new framework for understanding the urban and the domestic. Turning to an element of the cityscape that is thoroughly familiar yet frequently overlooked, Sharon Marcus argues that the apartment house embodied the intersections of city and home, public and private, and masculine and feminine spheres.
Moving deftly from novels to architectural treatises, legal debates, and popular urban observation, Marcus compares the representation of the apartment house in Paris and London. Along the way, she excavates the urban ghost tales that encoded Londoners' ambivalence about city dwellings; contends that Haussmannization enclosed Paris in a new regime of privacy; and locates a female counterpart to the flâneur and the omniscient realist narrator--the portière who supervised the apartment building.

I had to read and review this book for a class, and I thought it was great. I had not read any of the books referenced by Ms. Marcus, so it was difficult to tell how sucessfully she represented the authors, but thats really my problem, not hers. I would say that I don't like such heavy use of literary sources in these types of books, but it is usually because I haven't read the books.

I'm happy I chose this book to review, between the nasty review and its mention on the board, (and Ms. Marcus's rebuttal) this will be an easy book review to write.

5 out of 5 stars a cogent and generous work of scholarship.......2001-11-06

In an elegantly written and persuasively argued volume, Sharon Marcus uses the idea of the apartment building as a tool to comb out two sets of terms that tend to clump together in discussions about the 19th century: man=city=public, woman=home=private. In a work made pleasurable to the general reader through her clear and careful writing and her judicious use of footnotes, Marcus proposes a world of 19th century men, women, homes, and cities, that interact in more messy and interesting ways than we've learned to expect. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

        5 out of 5 stars Stunning Views.......2001-03-04

In Apartment Stories, Sharon Marcus takes the reader on a stunning tour of the interior spaces of the nineteenth century novel. The views that Marcus offers are always exciting. Following her from behind as she weaves her way through dark regions of apartment houses is often exhilirating. Particularly pleasurable is the way she bounces around London. And although sometimes she seems to bend over to make her point, even this rewarding

        4 out of 5 stars Apartment Stories.......2000-04-08

There has been a recent interest in theories that undermine the undertakings of the Enlightenment and Modernism toward presenting a world made up of clear definitions and distinctions. This trend has thrown light upon those cultures and periods of history previously dismissed as irrational, decadent, or retrogressive. Further, owing to Post-Structuralist interests in language, scholars have increasingly turned towards realist novels and literature from the period being studied to unearth peculiar social environments that have remained concealed in the purely formal analyses of historical accounts.

Sharon Marcus in Apartment Stories identifies the novel as a significant mirror of everyday life. Literary criticism and cultural history, for Marcus, are intertwined disciplines that feed on each other. In Apartment Stories she uses an analysis of the nineteenth-century realist novel to illuminate a discourse about (not `on') apartment houses of the time. Employing texts that she calls `atypical', as a heuristic device for exploring the range and complexity of nineteenth century debates on domesticity and urbanism, Marcus sets herself the ambitious task of questioning conventional conceptions of the distinctions of private and public, interior and exterior, as well as masculine and feminine. She probes the text not only in terms of seeking social and physical implications of the described spaces but also in terms of the manner in which the narration itself inscribes spatial relations and establishes zones as exterior and interior, private and public, mobile and fixed.

Apartment Stories is divided into three parts. The first part, "Open Houses", discusses the apartment house as a space that refutes readability as a private, opaque, and interior space. The second part, "The City and the Domestic Ideal", discusses the cultural preference for the single-family house over the lodging houses (that resembled apartment houses) of Londoners. The third and concluding part, "Interiorization and its Discontents", deals with Paris during the Second Empire. The author claims that Paris became interiorized after 1850 and thereby challenges the established interpretation of the Second Empire Paris as one of spectacle, flânerie, and circulation. She also questions the famous notion of the Goncourt brothers that "the interior is going to die. Life threatens to become more public". Marcus, in view of the Parisian apartment house, explicates the impossibility of ever fully interiorizing the home.

Sharon Marcus's Apartment Stories provides interesting insights into the world of the bourgeois in nineteenth century Paris- though her ideas are not always convincing and not always substantiated with documentation. Her elaborate endnotes that occupy 81 pages at the rear of the book fail to provide the convincing evidence that more architectural drawings and photographs might. The book leaves the readers constantly searching through the text for `real' images of the physical character of the apartment houses to which they may correspond the analysis of the novel. In the absence of such documentation, the author herself feels the need to stop every now and then in order to summarize and locate within the overall scheme of the book what she had just written (which is also what makes the writing of the book-review easier). These impediments that occlude the understanding of her new insights are further assisted by what could be considered a methodological oversight. Her structure of discussions of the interior and exterior space rest upon the individual descriptions of interior and exterior space. The discussion does not flow from one to the other and that, I feel, strengthens the distinction between the two. A discussion of the in-between transition spaces, apart from perhaps the character of the portière, between the street and the house, that one would expect in a discussion of interior and exterior spaces, is also absent.

Marcus works from an impressive bibliography, one that partially compensates for her deficiencies in documentation and illustration. Apart from a slight error in quoting the publication date of James Stevens Curl's The Victorian Celebration of Death as 1872 instead of 1972, the bibliography, along with the book, becomes a wonderful resource for any scholarly study of nineteenth century France and England in the fields of feminist theory and criticism, geography, urban studies, architectural history, literary criticism, and interdisciplinary research on everyday life.

        Book Description

Narrow winding streets, tasteful gardens, and centuries' old structures have long made London the Capital of Quaint. But in the past few years this historic city has made a name for itself in the world of architecture and design, and nowhere is that distinction more evident than in its apartment dwellings, as this colorful volume clearly proves. If you thought living in London meant electric fireplaces and damp cheerless parlors decorated with your grandmother's furniture, think again. Windows that wow, rooms vibrating with color, kitchens so sleek they seem to melt into the walls and bathrooms so luxurious they seem to make other rooms unnecessary—all these and more can be found between the covers of this elegant book that will both inspire and transport. Forty intimate home tours of beautifully appointed apartments, each with its own character, take readers through the basics of space, lighting, and color. Blueprints, sketches, and an informative text aimed at professionals and laypeople alike present each apartment's unique challenges and design strategy. From the witty to the high-tech, the minimalist to the lavish, these London apartments showcase the best work of today's architects and designers and secure London's reputation as one of the most exciting places to live in the world.

Wide variety of London spaces from different designers in different locations. The photos are very good, but I wish there were a few more of each flat. (There are an average of about 7 pages per flat). And keep in mind that the pages aren't very big. Of course, you can tell that from the book's size description.

All in all, good for getting a flavour of modern London design.

          Book Description

Penthouse Over the City sheds light on one of the most ambitious, and controversial, architectural undertakings of the last century; the Barbican Estate.

This leviathan project, with its futuristic vision and Byzantine intricacy included, in its final incarnation, the highest apartments in Europe, an underground railway and an arts centre composed of a theatre, concert hall, art galleries, cinemas and a library.

Its grand-scale conception included elements drawn from the rustication of Florentine palaces, the water and walkways of Venice, the elegant squares of Georgian London and the high-rise designs of the U.S.

Today, the cultural and architectural communities are re-assessing the site's significance in light of the achievement it represents. To its residents, Barbican living is an addiction. Its story spans decades or changing ideologies and tastes, and this book tells its full story for the first time.

          Book Description

Hailed by the authorities as "the future of housing," The Estate in south London was opened with a flourish by the Lord Mayor of London in the late 1960s. The six 20-story tower blocks were seen as the new way forward for community life in London. However, within a matter of weeks it had all started to go wrong as racial tensions built up and families of ethnic minorities clashed. Based on true stories, this is a novel based around 11 different families living side by side in The Estate, and their perceptions of it. We find out how the Indian family, the gypsies, the gay couple, and the landlord of the local pub all deal with their new homes and the dynamics of a multi-racial community. Building up to a finale at The Estate's Christmas party, this is a poignant and funny account of how life really treated the occupants of the tower blocks.

3 out of 5 stars All Lost in the Supermarket.......2003-04-23

The author of two books on football hooliganism turns his hand to fiction in this collection of thirteen loosely linked stories set on a south London housing estate in the late 1960s. King attempts to portray the reality of life on these high-rise complexes that sprang up all over Britain and the U.S. in the '60s through the stories of various tenants. Naively conceived of as socially progressive housing solutions, the stories show how concrete towers quickly turned into incubators of urban decay.

In very simple prose one gets glimpses into a variety of lives, from the Indian shopkeepers who are routinely threatened by racist neighbors, to the gay hairdresser couple who face down their harassers every day. There's a West Indian couple with two British-born boys, a single mother, a minicab driver, a mechanic, a drug dealer, a publican, and a pedophile. Almost all the characters are rather shallow stereotypes (gay hairdressers, a slimy cab driver, come on!), and their stories are so brief that by the time one gets slightly interested in any of them, it's over. The book is apparently based on true stories (presumably King grew up on such an estate), but all too often it reads like a predictable TV show, rather than a really interesting portrait of a community. There are nice moments here and there, but the writing is so labored and the characters so stock that it's hard to get too enthusiastic for it.

i like peggy's books and vidio's, but i had a bit of trouble, what is the substitude for turp if you are painting with acrylicks, it was not clear in this book and the first book only covered oil paint,
(background as well as the painting proccess it self).
like you'r books and vidio's and hope you keep us happy with more in the future.
            a loyal fan

Great instructions for the novice! I have never painted with oils in my life, but bought this book and got the nerve to give it a try. My first attempt turned out very nice and even professional looking! I painted the "Rub-a-dub Pup" Very cute and not difficult! I can't wait to try another "Harris Creature" DON"T BE PUT OFF BY THE BEAUTY OF THE COVER PICTURE! Peggy Harris' technique and easy to follow instructions make anything simple and fun. (Not to mention very sastifying!) Also, she uses many household items that cut down on purchasing many expensive "artsy" items! Give this one a try; I don't see how anyone who does so can fail! Have fun & good luck, PS My husband said this FIRST TRY is actually good enough to sell in an arts & craft show!
