What's the effect of osmosis on a raisin?
How is water transported through plant stems?
What's the best way to grow penicillin?
How are butterflies different from moths?
Now you can discover answers to these and other fascinating questions about biologythe study of living organisms. In Biology for Every Kid, you'll learn how to talk with fireflies, watch bacteria wage war in a glass of milk, discover how to tell the temperature by counting cricket chirps, and find out how an apple and an onion can taste the same.
Each of the 101 experiments is broken down into its purpose, a list of materials, step-by-step instructions, expected results, and an easy to understand explanation. Every activity has been pretested and can be performed safely and inexpensively in the classroom or at home.

Never disappointed by a Janice VanCleave book.......2006-03-21
You will not be disappointed with this book! Janice VanCleave's Biology For Every Kid is divided into these categories: plants, zoology, and the human body with tons of simple hands-on experiments that you can do for each. I use these experiments all the time in my 7th grade classroom and the kids love them. Learning is so much better when it's hands-on! I would highly recommend this book for upper elementary and middle school science teachers.
A little interest boost for elementary school biology.......1999-04-10
I reviewed this book in The Home School Manual ================
Projects and activities to teach concepts, terminology, and (according to the author, Janice VanCleave) laboratory methods. This book and the others in the series each describe 101 experiments. For biology they are classified under plants, animals, and humans. Each is presented in a two-page spread with an illustration on the right. The order is logical. By working through the book doing some experiments and reading about the others, one would form significant concepts. An explanation is given for each activity. Growing carrots from carrot tops demonstrates that a plant can grow if it has portions of base, stem, and root, and if it receives food and water.
The explanations are oversimplified in some cases (for "finger monocle" for example). Younger students need simpler explanations, but I believe the scientific principles could be stated more accurately. Also, some of the illustrations could be improved, but basically the book is good.
For a total science program I would recommend a textbook or a number of broad topic books. Individual experiments miss some of the overall themes and some concepts are hard to demonstrate.
I have not seen evolutionary concepts in the book. It and others in the series seem best for about grades 3 through 5. Younger kids could profit from most of the activities. The explanations don't bring out the scientific principles clearly enough for older ones.
Part of a series from John Wiley & Sons.

Book Description
What should the average person know about science? Because science is so central to life in the 21st century, science educators and other leaders of the scientific community believe that it is essential that everyone understand the basic concepts of the most vital and far-reaching disciplines. Evolution 101 does exactly that. This accessible volume provides readers - whether students new to the field or just interested members of the lay public - with the essential ideas of evolution using a minimum of jargon and mathematics. Concepts are introduced in a progressive order so that more complicated ideas build on simpler ones, and each is discussed in small, bite-sized segments so that they can be more easily understood. Evolution 101 provides an introduction for non-scholars to this most powerful scientific theory, covering such issues as:
The history of evolutionary thought, from before Darwin to the present day
The evidence for evolution, from fields as diverse as geology, molecular biology, paleontology, and more, that show how strongly supported evolution is
How evolution works, including topics ranging from behavior (e.g., sexual selection) to molecular biology (e.g., mutation)
Evolution in our daily lives, including how evolution accounts for phenomena such as antibiotic resistance and pesticide resistance This essential resource will answer the questions students and lay people have regarding evolution, and will point them on the path to further understanding.

A great collection of information about the human body..........2001-02-13
This is a wonderful book. I bought it for my six and nine year-olds, and we've had a lot of fun going through it together. It covers a lot of the science of the human body, and explains things well in a clear yet thorough way. There are over 100 facts and definitions of things covered; lots of "hands on" exercises; hundreds of line drawings and diagrams; and brief biographies of important scientists who contributed to the study of the human body.
All in all a great book chock full of info for kids, especially for the price.
What a Great Book!.......2000-06-03
I have to say the truth, this book is great. In school I amlearning about health in science, this book gave me information I neverever knew. Also it is very interesting since I want to be a docter when I grow up. Who (my age) knows that you are taller in the morning then you are at night? This book also has a glossary in the back to tell you definitions of bold words in the book that you might of never heard of! All that is left to say is .......if you want to know facts about the HUMAN BODY this is the book for you.
101 Things Every Kid Should Know.......2000-05-12
I feel that is a good idea to contribute such a book for kids who want to learn and know more about the human body. This book has enough information for high schoolers or even students in colledge. It is good for reports, projects, homework and other educational needs for our growing minds. In conclusion i would like say that this book rocks in an educational way.
Thank you for your time, Jenifer

Book Description
Heterogeneous catalysis provides the backbone of the world's chemical and oil industries. The innate complexity of practical catalytic systems suggests that useful progress should be achievable by investigating key aspects of catalysis by experimental studies on idealised model systems. Thin films and supported clusters are two promising types of model system that can be used for this purpose, since they mimic important aspects of the properties of practical dispersed catalysts. Similarly, appropriate theoretical studies of chemisorption and surface reaction clusters or extended slab systems can provide valuable information on the factors that underlie bonding and catalytic activity. This volume describes such experimental and theoretical approaches to the surface chemistry and catalytic behaviour of metals, metal oxides and metal/metal oxide systems.
An introduction to the principles and main themes of heterogeneous catalysis is followed by detailed accounts of the application of modern experimental and theoretical techniques to fundamental problems. The application of advanced experimental methods is complemented by a full description of theoretical procedures, including Hartree-Fock, density functional and similar techniques. The relative merits of the various approaches are considered and directions for future progress are indicated.

Book Description
Metal-Oxygen Clusters is the first book, providing an overview of the surface chemistry and catalytic properties of heteropoly oxometalates. After a brief look at the early knowledge of heteropoly oxometalates, the book discusses the synthesis, characterization, structure, bulk properties and stability of these materials. The remainder and the largest portion of the book explores the properties of these solids as catalysts in acid-catalyzed and oxidation processes in supported or unsupported forms.
The book provides an up-to-date review of the methods for synthesizing heteropoly oxometalates of Keggin structure, techniques from spectroscopic through electrochemical to elemental analysis for their characterization and the current information on their structure, bulk properties and their stabilities at high temperatures and under acid and alkaline conditions. The book discusses the materials employed as supports for the title solid and the results of the examination of the supported materials. Methods for the identification of the nature and source of the two catalytic functions, the acidic and oxidative properties, of the heteropoly oxometalates are reviewed and discussed. The use of both the supported and unsupported heteropoly oxometalates as catalysts in acidity-requisite processes ranging from methanol conversion to hydrocarbons to ring-expansion and contraction processes and in oxidation processes from methane cyclohexane are described and related to the aforementioned properties.
