Book Description

The familiar image of the Italian countryside - hills crowned with groups of tall cypresses and rambling stone houses - dates back to early medieval times. But all the main features of that landscape are still there, particularly in the countryside of Tuscany, where many of the houses featured can be found. The first part of the book explores the essential ingredients of the style, taking in colour and texture and looking at the inimitable mixture of simplicity and comfort evident in furniture and fabrics, and going on to admire the innate gift the Italians have for living outside. The second part looks in more detail at the individual country houses. Whether Rustic, Contemporary, Exotic or Traditional in character, these homes offer myriad ideas for interior decoration that are easily incorporated into other lives and cultures.

    Book Description

    Vineyards and rolling hills
From the Maremma coastline to the countryside around Siena, from the vineyards of Chianti to the famous beaches of Viareggio, not forgetting the ancient cities of Florence, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, Cortona . . . the ever-changing scenery of Tuscany is a source of infinite delight.

    Gardens of Tuscany
Famous for its sumptuous villas, Tuscany welcomes the garden lover: the Boboli Gardens in Florence, the gardens in Lucca or Siena--less well-known but just as beautiful--Living in Tuscany brings these havens of tranquility to the reader.

    Tuscan Interiors
A room with a view over the Piazza del Campo in Siena, medieval terraces in the heart of Florence, grand villas surrounded by vineyards belonging to Tuscany's ancient nobility, the homes of artists and writers. Tuscany opens its doors to reveal its cultural and creative riches.

    Artistic heritage
Tuscany is justly proud of its artistic and cultural heritage: fabulous museums in the heart of ancient cities displaying all the glories of Italian decorative art; the workshops of sculptors from all over the world come to work in the small town of Pietrasanta; artisans breathing new vigor into the traditional crafts of the region--Impruneta pottery, silks and perfume from Florence, mosaic art, marbled paper and leatherwork.

    Places of special interest
Well-known Florence restaurants or tiny trattorias in isolated hamlets, local markets, the village butcher who is also a poet, wines from Chianti and purest olive oils for the gourmet palate, Tuscany is a synonym for good living. Old family villas turned into hotels, small farms that welcome families exploring off the beaten track: discovering Tuscany's hidden treasures becomes a real delight.

    Visitor's Guide
The best addresses, as recommended by the Tuscans themselves, to discover the true Tuscany beyond the tourist trail. From little-known museums to the best vineyards to visit, from where to find the finest handmade gloves to where to eat the best tagliatelle, the Visitor's Guide tells you all you need to know to make the most of your stay in this enchanting region.

Tuscany . . . The name evokes a unique lifestyle, the legacy of an extraordinary historical and cultural heritage. In Tuscany, daily life is steeped in art: villas and gardens are wonders of balance between man and nature; interiors harbor treasures jealously guarded through the centuries. In this sumptuously illustrated book, we discover villages where time seems to have stopped; the extraordinary interiors and gardens of villas and palaces; and the traditional crafts, cuisine, and wines which make this region so exceptional.

    3 out of 5 stars Helpful .......2007-07-23

This is not just a book of Tuscan countryside photographs. This is an all around useful tool to help the reader learn about various regions of Tuscany and what they are known for. While there may be other books with more stunning photographs that does not invalidate that these photos too reflect the region. The book is helpful for a new traveller to the region and provides a small list of resources at the end of the book. I actually think it is better than some other books on Tuscany that I have seen. Overall I would describe this book as helpful but perhaps a seasoned traveller to the area would want a more in depth and detailed work. Still I give it 3 stars.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-09

I found this book very dark and unimpressive. The pictures tended to be grainy and dark, some even out of focus. Having just returned from Tuscany I know the country abounds with spectacular photographic opportunities - unfortunately that is not represented in this book.

An Expatriate Discovers More than One Way of Saying "Ah! Tuscany"

The author and his wife buy an apartment in Tuscany, furnish it and take up residence there for six months each year. Over subsequent years of assimilation into Tuscan life he records many experiences and observations that are both hilarious and maddeningly frustrating - tales of bureaucracy gone mad, a self-absorbed merciless government in league with uncaring big-business and utilities, and stories of life around his condominium and home town of San Gimignano. They bring to light both positive and negative aspects of Tuscan living that the casual tourist never experiences. From these observations he develops a theory on the factors that contribute to the special Tuscan character. His story supports the thesis that multiple facets of Tuscan life together form a whole that is fuller, more human and more interesting than the beautiful side that he first knew as a tourist.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, may pick up that hook any minute now.......2005-07-27

I'm not a crocheter, I'm a knitter. I had not seen many crocheted afgans or shawls I would actually consider making until this book showed up in my knitting group. These are beautiful. I kept flipping through, expecting the popcorn lego strangeness so endemic to crochet design, boring blues and ranch color worsted, but instead here there are page after page of carefully patterned, tasteful brocade style richness. There are beautiful edging details, subtle color. Even my snooty mom would have been proud to own anything in here. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Crochet Encyclopedia.......2004-09-12

I have never made an item from a pattern in this book. That being said, I use the book all the time. Ms. Chin has thoughtfully included enough information in her instructions to allow one the ability to use it as a "stitch enclycopedia." I thoroughly enjoy cable, post and long stitches, and the book is filled with patterns utilizing these stitches.

Some of the techniques are hard to follow. You have to take it step by step in order to reproduce them. I think a bit more thought in the layout of the information would be helpful, as would international symbols.

I love the book and have recommended it to many of my fellow crocheters. Lily is an excellend ambassador for crochet. If her latest book is a thoroughly useful as this one, I will be purchasing it soon.

--Autust, 2005: I have to edit this because I have an afghan almost to Lili's specs, so my first sentence is not quite true anymore. Still am as enthusiactic about the book as ever.

3 out of 5 stars Long Double Crochet should be illustrated.......2004-02-05

This is a very good book for creating some really lovely afghans. However, the technique is based on two basic stitches that are completely glossed over. 1 - the sc used to give the pieces a mosaic look and feel are barely mentioned in the patterns. Without the consistency of the sc odd numbered rows you would get a totally different outcome. 2 - the basis for everything else is the LDC stitch. Unfortunately there is no illustration of the long double crochet stitch in the stitches at the end of the book. The stitches illustrated are reprints of the basic crochet stitches found in all crochet books. Time should have been taken to create an illustration of the stitch that the technique is centered around - LDC.

5 out of 5 stars Now you can have your cake and eat it too!.......2003-01-29

This is one of the best crochet books I own. Lily Chin shows you how to take simple crochet stitches a step further to achieve gorgeous mixes of color and texture...and the beauty of it all is that you save a lot of ends to weave in as you don't change color within the same row! The creative end result of her technique is a fabulous collection of elegant afghan patterns that achieve a designer look.

What's more is that Ms. Chin provides the pattern stitch multiples so you can adapt her savvy pattern stitch combinations to other projects of interest. She even encourages you to do so with a few non-afghan teasers.

It would be preferable to have some crochet experience before trying the designs in this book but by no means do you have to be an expert. For novices and experienced crocheters alike, this book will inspire the creative person inside you by opening your eyes to the multitude of stitch and color combinations you can simply achieve through crochet. I most definately agree that knitters will want to take up crochet!

5 out of 5 stars Book from the world's fastest crocheter.......2003-01-13

Yes, according to the Guiness people at the Caroline Rhea show, Lily Chin is the world's fastest crocheter. Not only that, she is a talented knit and crochet designer.

This book shakes up the notion of what crocheted items look like - yes, we crocheters know it isn't all those granny square pochos in forest green and harvest gold, but the world doesn't know that yet. M's Chin's designs for afghans and wearables are very interesting and look quite elegant.

This is not, however, for raw beginners although the instructions are clear and precise. This is for crocheters who want to stretch their talent in a different way and do not have to worry about exactly how the stitches turn out. This is a good book for somebody who has some experience crocheting so they can see what is possible to do with the art of crochet.

Crochet has never gotten the respect knitting gets and I believe this items in this book will help people see crocheting in a new way. So until that day, nake an item (or three) from this book and be prepared to explain "No, it's crocheted" to the unknowing. You'll enjoy the book and the projects and spreading the word that crochet is cool.

I also used Martin Cheek's book Making Mosaics: 15 stylish projects from start to finish. I felt the Cheek book cave more comprehensive advice to the novice. If you can only get one book, I would recommend Cheek, but if you are attracted to the projects in this one, you will also find it worthwhile.

Contains good traceable outlines for: a daisy, sunflower, tulip, leaf-type motifs, duck, chicken, fish, stars, shell, starfish.

2 out of 5 stars I had expected a little more in ordering this book........2000-04-06

Being a beginner, I had hoped and expected a little more with regards to the Introduction aspect of the book. The ideas were a little weak and presentation could have used a bit more work - I could have done without the full page templates of the daisy, the tulip and the flower pot. On the other hand, the egg shell ideas were interesting. To make this a great book, the author should have included more examples of the use of some of the types of mosaics (i.e. glass vases and the egg shells) and the author could have given me more of a "how to" feeling for getting started.
