If you are going for PhD, then read this book.

But, if you are planning on getting a job in the industry, then forget this book. Study Analog and Digital design, VLSI, C.

2 out of 5 stars Very superficial coverage, and my book is missing sections.......2006-01-18

When I recieved the book, everything seemed to be in order, and it was only when I tried to read chapter 4 (Fundamentals of Light-Matter Interaction, which some might argue, is quite important) that I discovered, this valuable chapter had been replaced by incoherent babble about statistical methods and linear algebra, that did not match the table of contents. Furthermore, it didn't have anything to do with biology, or photonics. I don't know if all of the books contain this misprint, but I wouldn't buy it from Amazon (at least check it when you get it so that you can return it if your's is screwed up!)
Furthermore, the book has many interesting topics, but each is covered in a very superficial way. Mathematical models are avoided almost totally, and the ocassional equations have no derivation. This could be a plus for some, but I feel like this book would not help anyone solve actually engineering problems in biophotonics. It was merely a collection of interesting summaries.

4 out of 5 stars Biological Sciences Graduate Student.......2004-06-18

Like many introduction to optics books published by Wiley, this book is well organized and gives an excellent overview with some good illustrations (terrible representation of Optical Coherence Tomography). It is a good overview of many areas like bioimaging and biosensors. As a biological science graduate student, I found the few formulas easy to understand. FRET and FLIM should have been developed better. The web references are convenient.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a good overview on different biological optical applications.

Life evolved under the sun, writes Peter Ensminger in this appreciative essay on how various organisms respond to sunlight. No matter where it is found, almost every form of life "has become specialized to sense the quantity, direction, polarization, wavelength, and periodicity of light." Many of the higher mammals, humans among them, have well-developed visual abilities; as Ensminger writes, the range of light encountered during a given day can be likened in magnitude to the height of a small child (about 3 feet) at one extreme as compared with the diameter of the earth (about 7,950 miles) at the other, and the healthy human eye functions over this range and more, even at extraordinarily low light levels.

Vision is, indeed, the most important of our senses. Ensminger notes that "a single glance instantly gives us information about our surroundings that is much more sophisticated than that from our other senses." It is important for countless other species as well; as many as 40 visual systems have evolved separately in invertebrates, following different principles of optical design. In his lively, well-illustrated text, Ensminger offers an overview of these many visual systems, while considering the manifold workings of sunlight. He even explains why you should eat your carrots, and why the old farmer's saw that it's best to plow by moonlight is true. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Which fungus is as sensitive to light as the human eye? What are the myths and facts about the ozone hole, tanning, skin cancer, and sunscreens? What is the effect of light on butterfly copulation? This entertaining collection of essays explores how various organisms—including archaebacteria, slime molds, fungi, plants, insects, and humans—sense and respond to sunlight.

The essays in Peter A. Ensminger's book cover vision, photosynthesis, and phototropism, as well as such unusual topics as the reason why light causes beer to develop a "skunky" odor. He introduces us to the kinds of eyes that have evolved in different animals, including those in a species of shrimp that is ostensibly eyeless; gives us a better appreciation of color vision; explains how plowing fields at night may be used to control weeds; and tells about variegate porphyria, a metabolic disease that makes people very sensitive to sunlight and may have afflicted King George III of England.

These engaging essays present a complicated yet fascinating subject in an accessible way. The book will be treasured by anyone interested in the wonders of biology.

A collection of in-depth essays on the interaction of light with living organisms. Ensminger includes enough careful explanation to make the work approachable and rewarding to the non-specialist. Beware of the book length as 34% is made up of appendices, a glossary and notes to pages.

        Book Description

It is remarkable how much we take for granted the tremendous energy and vitality that the sun provides earth's inhabitants. As we enter the new millennium, it is worthwhile to review how our ancestors perceived the biologic effects of sunlight, and how science and medicine have advanced our knowledge about the biologic effects of light.
At the turn of the century, a multitude of investigators explored the use of sunlight and artificial radiation for treating a multitude of diseases. These explorations gave rise to photodynamic therapy, phototherapy, and chemophototherapy. However, enthusiasm for using sunlight and artificial radiation to treat disease was dampened with the birth of pharmacology.
It was the goal of the Fifth International Arnold Rikli Symposium on the Biologic Effects of Light, held in Basel, Switzerland, on November 1-3, 1998, to review the history of phototherapy and have some of the world's leading experts on the biologic effects of light provide new perspectives on the positive and negative effects of light. The general topics included a broad range of biologic effects of sunlight, artificial ultraviolet radiation and electromagnetic radiation. Special sessions on radiation and vitamin D and bone health, photoimmunology, biopositive effects of UV radiation, effects of electromagnetic currents and fields, and ocular and non-ocular regulation of circadian rhythms and melatonin, should be of particular interest to readers of Biologic Effects of Light.

                Book Description

The influence of light on the lives of living organisms is all-pervasive, affecting movement, vision, behavior, and physiological activity. This book is a biophysically grounded comparative survey of how animals detect light and perceive their surroundings. Included are discussions of photoreceptors, light emitters, and eyes. The book focuses in particular on the kinds of optical systems that have evolved, beginning with unicellular organisms that detect and respond to light through to more advanced and complex designs for imaging. The relevance of these studies extends beyond biology, since these findings can be used to help develop photoreceptor energy conversion and information systems, and optical imaging devices with a wide range of everyday applications. The book will appeal to biophysicists, photobiologists, bioengineers, neuroscientists, and all researchers working in the area of vision and visual optics.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24

I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.

Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

1 out of 5 stars Incorrect Item .......2006-01-19

I orderd one item and received something else. This item was needed for an on-line class and due to the error I am behind schedule on my class work.
