5 out of 5 stars Must have for Mountaineers!.......2007-02-07

I can't say enough about this book. The most accurate and most helpful information of all the 14er books. My favorite thing about it is that it provides info for all 4 seasons. Most 14er guidebooks, like Roach's, only provide info for summer hiking, but I'm not willing to sit around 9 months out of the year.

This is THE BOOK to get if you're looking to climb the 14ers. Buy this one first, then cross reference it with some of the others.

5 out of 5 stars Dawson Makes You Get Off Your Duff..........2002-07-17

... and get out to the mountains he loves.

He was the first person in history to ski down all of Colorado's fourteeners. He's climbed all at least once and many several times. Among his accomplishments are four ascents up the Diamond face of Longs Peak, so it is no surprise that Longs Peak figures prominently in this text. Dawson began climbing at an early age, and has written several other guide books for hikers in Colorado. His illustrations are excellent, and his narratives are brief enough to keep your interest and meaty enough to provide the information most are looking for.

    5 out of 5 stars The peakbagger's best friend.......2002-06-22

Having climbed Colorado 14ers for more than 30 years, I've used all available guidebooks. First rule, remember that the info in the book is often wrong -- unless you're willing to think for yourself, avoiding mountains is the best bet. After that, to me Dawson is the best guidebook ever. Roach is good too -- it's good to have both. But in spite of the price difference, Dawson's 2 volumes are well worth it. And please, tread lightly!

5 out of 5 stars Year Round Guide is Tops.......2000-09-23

I've read seemingly every 14er guide available. Much of the information overlaps as one can imagine. However, what really sets this (and the companion volume as well) one apart is the truly four season information that it provides. Louis gives you ratings for summer and snow climbs as well as ski descents. None of the other 14er guides I've read give you that. These volumes are often compared to Gerry Roach's books which are excellent in their own right. However, in my mind the information in Louis Dawson's guides is better as many of us climb in seasons other than summer!

5 out of 5 stars a great guide for year round climbing.......1999-04-27

Lou Dawson is incredible, not only does he describe summer routes in this guide but makes one want to get out of their "warm" recliner and conquer some winter and spring routes as well. a must have book for Colorado's 14'ers. While you at it, get Vol 2 as well!

2 out of 5 stars Great Anticipation, Disappointing Results.......2007-08-11

When I originally saw this book, I was highly interested because I find Colorado to be a beautiful state and photographic history to be a fascinating topic. Unfortunately, many of the retakes are uninteresting (as stated in another review) and are technically lacking (poor choice in time of day, cloud cover, or just flat out blown highlights (I counted eight photographs with blown highlights on a cursory glance through the book)).

On the plus side, the historical images are worth examining -- simply seeing photographs over 130 years old is intriguing, and the descriptions accompanying these photographs give you a sense of just how pioneering a lot of this work was.

I don't own Colorado I, I have a hard time imagining that it would be as disappointing as Colorado II. The historical photographs are beyond reproach, but I can't shake the feeling that Fielder barely gave any compositional consideration to the modern photographs.

    5 out of 5 stars A lovely companion volume.......2005-12-21

For those who enjoyed the first volume, Volume II is a lovely companion book. In an interview, John Fielder explained that he could only put so many photos in the first volume, but going back through the hundreds of pictures that didn't make it in, he realized there were many more that were just as deserving to be published. I'm thrilled to include this book in my collection and highly recommend it for Colorado history lovers.

2 out of 5 stars Ignore the Media Hype.......2005-10-22

As a Colorado history buff, I'm a little annoyed at all the hype the media has given the Fielder-Jackson project. The fact of the matter is Fielder's project is in no way original or ground-breaking. Several other photographers have quietly done similar projects over the years. The first that I know of to publish a then-and-now book on Colorado was Robert L. Brown, who published a series of such books in the 1960s. The first person to start work on a then-and-now book in modern times was Grant Collier, who reshot the images of his great-great grandfather, Joseph Collier. Joshua Dinar has also done a book called "Denver: Then & Now" and there have been a number of other regional Colorado books with a similar theme done over the years. Of these books, "Colorado: Yesterday & Today" by Grant Collier is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the best. It is significantly more interesting because he reshot the images of his great-great grandfather. Collier also did the best job of finding the exact spots where the historic photos were taken and he provided a lot more historical text and insight than any of the other modern books. The next best modern book is probably Fielder's "Colorado 1870-2000," in part because of the impressive size of the book. After this, I would put "Denver: Then & Now," followed by "Colorado: 1870-2000 II". I rank this book last because it consists only of the rejects from his first book. So while the book was released in 2005, the modern photos in it were taken back in 1998. The photos in this book were rejected from the first book for a reason. They are not as historically interesting as those in the first book and Fielder didn't do a great job of precisely re-shooting the images. So unless you own all of the other books listed above, I don't see any reason to buy this book. I do also recommend Robert L. Brown's books, but since the "modern" photos in his books were taken in the 1960s, they are obviously a little outdated. But the books provide interesting insight into two past time-periods, and they also provide a lot of historical text on each of the towns in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Dawson at his best........2001-12-25

No other backcountry skier has carved as many turns in this region as Lou Dawson. Furthermore, he has dedicated himself with the same level of perfection to assembling useful guidebooks, and COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY SKIING is the latest in a long line of classics. The maps are the best I've seen in any guidebook, the photographs are both art and information, and the text infinitely more revealing than that found in his predecessor guidebook, Colorado High Routes. This is a book useful for novices or extremists, afternoon tours or day-long descents. As if this isn't enough, with inimitable style, the trademark Dawson storytelling and insight gained from over three decades of hard-won backcountry experiences makes this book transcend the genre.

I purchased this book for a father's day gift and was very pleased with the beautiful photographs it contains. My parents are planning on moving to Colorado and I think this book definitely gives them something to look forward to! Book Description

Based on extensive research as well as interviews with many survivors of settlement camps, this book satisfies a long-standing need for a comprehensive history of this shameful episode in our history, focusing specifically on the internment camp known as Amache.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AMACHE: THE STORY OF JAPANESE INTERNMENT IN COLORADO DURING WORLD WAR II.......2005-08-24

I belong to a reading group and the book we chose to read was "The Magic of Ordinary Days". The story took place near the internment camp of Amache. Because I knew only a little history of internment camps, I wanted to find out more. After searching, I came up with the "Amache" book. It was easy to read and I had a difficult time putting it down. It explained much about the various reasons for moving the Japanese (and not only because we felt threatened). Why, I wonder, is none of this in the history books? Is it because we were ashamed of what we had done to those families? It is, whether we like it or not, part of our history and should not be swept under the rug and forgotten. I learned much from the reading of this book and thank the author for his research and dedication.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EVERY PERSON OF EVERY AGE.......2004-05-31

On the "day of infamy," when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, I was 8 years old. I was born of a poor family, who lived in the sparsely populated area of southeastern Colorado, with no access to immediate world news. Thus, it was bewildering why all my 3d grade Caucasian classmates were whispering and staring at me after I had entered the classroom that day.

It wasn't long after that day, when many Japanese families relocated from the west coast to Colorado and other inland states. Their so-called voluntary relocation was followed by forced relocation (imprisonment) of those Japanese who remained on the west coast. They were sent to several camps in the interior states. Amache was a hastily built camp near the small town of Granada in the southeastern corner of Colorado.

By war's end, in 1945, the imprisonmnet of the west coast Japanese into inland territory, I had thought, was common knowledge. Yet, as I grew older, even 30 or 40 years later, I found that many Americans were ignorant of this event in American history. Now, 60 years later, there are those who would deny the shame hanging over the imprisonment of Issei and Nisei. Instead, they would call it simply "relocation for their safety." They would justify the act, pointing to the camps as safe havens away from possible physical harm that might have been committed against them by racist Americans along the coast. Furthermore, they would say that "suspicious" characters would have been prohibitied, by their incarceration, from perpetrating "possible" traitorous acts.

Finally, a man of truth and integrity, Robert Harvey, has written a well researched history and analysis of the shameful conduct displayed by a segment of the American populace during WW2. He has not relied solely on interviews and opinions. Rather, he has documented the evidence of hysteria displayed after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Unwarranted, hateful statements were made by American citizens, including well-known figures such as: General John DeWitt; Hearst newspaper columnist, Henry McLemore; national syndicated columnist, Walter Lippmann; and CA attorney general - the future Supreme Court Justice - Earl Warren.

Prominent leaders showed poor judgment and prejudice in their decisions to remove the "Japs" from western states. Pressed on by these influential people, President Roosevelt, who did not question the leaders' prejudices, signed executive order #9066, which cleared the way for mandatory evacuation of all Japanese living along the western coast.

Harvey describes in detail the evacuation process. He notes the Nisei and Issei's losses: their personal property as well as their dignity and freedom. Harvey centers his history on the camp at Amache. He describes the features of camp construction, its maintenance, the atmosphere of living quarters and surrounding habitat, and life as it existed in the camp.

Harvey maintains a balance in his assessment of America's attitude toward the Nisei and Issei. In fairness, he has cited the thoughtful actions by kinder souls. Eleanor Roosevelt publicly spoke in defense of the Nisei and Issei. Colorado Governor Ralph Carr risked his career by welcoming the Japanese to his state. Some Caucasians in CA remained faithful to Japanese friends and helped maintain some of their property in CA during their incarceration.

Harvey takes the reader through the hard times and some good times at Camp Amache. He notes the loyalty to America felt by Japanese Americans. He revives the memory of those brave and loyal Nisei who volunteered and served in the 442d - one of the most decorated units in WW2 history. "The 442d suffered the highest percentage of casualties for a team of its size."

Harvey writes about the dignity and respect eventually earned by Japanese Americans. He quotes former internees. Some have bitter memories and residual resentments. But all, once bowed and shamed by their incarceration, are now proud survivors, and proud to call themselves Americans.

Wisely and conclusively, Harvey reminds us all - Americans and all of humanity - that "Amache does not remain in our memory to open old wounds, but to stop such wounds from being repeated."

I give the book 3 stars for literary merit, 4 stars for content, and 5 stars for "heart." I urge every person of every age to read the book.

          Book Description

These were World War II Ski Troopers of the 10th Mountain Division on maneuvers in the Gore Range of the Colorado Rockies. Dusenbery draws from his own experiences as he describes the rigorous mountain training at 9,000 to 12,000 foot elevations. The D. Series maneuvers were the culmination of high mountain training for the Division. Its veterans still talk about D. Series as being a truly memorable experience.

Within a few weeks, while still at Camp Hale in Colorado, Dusenbery wrote his account of the ordeal. His graphic narrative forms the basis for this book. At the same time, Wilson P. Ware was recording his experiences by drawing twenty-two sketches. The narrative has been skillfully linked with the extraordinary sketches in a vivid account of man's struggles against the sudden storms, numbing cold and fierce winds in the high mountains.
