Book Description

The religious and magical practices of the ancient Egyptians have had a profound and lasting effect on the world. Egypt has been described as the "mother of magicians". To appreciate the Egyptian view of magic, we need to accept that to the Egyptians magic was not considered strange or eccentric, but was a part of daily life, to which everyone resorted. Magic blended seamlessly with religion and medicine, being seen as part of a holistic worldview. In this volume these magical and religious practices are explored, from both a historical and practical perspective. The practices are explored from an ancient Egyptian worldview, taking into consideration that the Egyptian culture spread over a period of more than 3000 years. The Egyptians saw the universe as being made of four worlds - the everyday world we live in, the underworld, the sky and the heavens. Subject covered in this book include: -What is Heka? -Ancient Egyptian Worldviews -The Gods and Goddesses of Magic -Symbolism - Colours & Sacred Numbers -The Tools Used -Sacred Words & Gestures -Statues & Masks -Crystals & Other Materials used in Heka -Incenses & Perfumes -Food & Wine used in Offerings & at Feasts -The Ancient Egyptian Magical Calendar -Purification, Sacred Space & Rituals David Rankine is based in London (UK) and is a respected authority on spiritual & magical practices. He is the author of many books, including Climbing the Tree of Life, Circle of Fire & The Guises of the Morrígan. This book, HEKA - The Practices of Ancient Egyptian Magic, is the result of careful research & practical work and is highly recommended to students wishing to pursue practical work within this system.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not really worth it - A Priestess Of Isis.......2006-10-08

I was really excited about ordering this book, but when it came i was dissapointed before i opened it. It was this tiny, skinny little package. I opened it and read it in about an hour. It has bits and pieces of useful and NON-redundant information but not worth the almost thirty dollars. What a rip off.

The author also was severly biased toward the goddess Maat, and he was rather incorrect with his descriptions about the god/desses. I dont think he had his facts straight either. He gives a slight feeling that Maat is more important than any other god (and also provides more ritual for her), and he also portrays Isis as a conniving, tricking, she-devil. And anyone who knows Her knows it is quite the opposite. (Not to get off subject, but i highly recommend the book "Isis Magic" by M. Isidora Forrest. It talks about the real egyptian magic and a lot of hard work was done so she could get accurate historical information. It has alot about Ancient Egypt in it.)

All in all, the book had very slim pickins. It had small tidbits here and there of good info. The only thing i found to be of great value was the tables he has about the correspondances of the god/desses. Like colors and vegetables. But there werent that many god/desses he had in his book. He has very little rituals (i think 3) and doesnt go into spells really. I recommend "Ancient Egyptian Magic and Divination", "Egyptian Paganism for beginners", and Rosemary Clarks "Sacred Magic Of Ancient Egypt." And if you care "Circle Of Isis", because the info isn't really Isis-y that much at all. It has INVALUABLE information about most of the panthenon.

Dont buy this book. Rent it from the library. I would have returned it, but thats a hassle and I'm a book pack-rat. Seriously not worth more than $10.00. All of the info you could EASILY find on the internet.

I hope this review will help you, and i know its a contrast to the first one, but i didnt think it was fair of that review. (I seriously think that Daivd Rankine or one of his pals wrote it) Because of the first good review i thought this would be an awesome book. (if you dont know anything about Ancient Egypt, i guess it'd be okay. But take it with a grain of salt) And its nowhere near awesome. Take my word for it. Spend your money on better books. You can email me if you'd like at vampirefamine@comcast.net. Thanks, Happy Amazoning.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Book at last!.......2006-04-19

Like with with many of David Rankine's books this book is packed with well researched, sound historical and practical information. If you are a neo-pagan fluffy looking for a book telling you that Isis is great or that Sekhmet is the only Goddess worth calling upon, this book is not for you.

If however, you are looking for something from which to draw both inspiration and information for your magickal and spiritual work with the Egyptian Gods, using ceremonies, techniques and spells as they were performed by the Ancient Egyptian people (rather than the romantic views held by some neo-pagans in regards to the temple religions of Egypt) then you will love this book and find it to be an invaluable source.

"The influence of Egyptian magic has persisted through to the present day" (from the author introduction) a true enough statement, which in its own way encapsulates the value of this book.

In my opinion, there are many who would benefit from reading this book and having it to hand as a reference work when writing and researching ceremonies.

Rankine includes a great deal of information on useful correspondences, including food, minerals, crystals etc. There is no padding in this book, the information is provided in a straight forward way without the need for embelishment and speculation.

For me this book deserves ***** stars as this is the type of book I would like to see more of in the magickal / pagan market today. There are too many books providing speculative and inspired material as fact, leading to misinformation being perpetuated as fact. It is refreshing to be able to read a book which is different and which looks at the historical information, academic research, as well as practical aspects of the Egyptian world with fresh eyes.

The bibliography, nearly 6 pages of type, illustrates the level of research which went into producing this work. The author's passion for the mysteries of the ancient Egyptian spiritual path is clear throughout. His emphasis on the much neglected, but very important Goddess of Truth and Balance, shows that he has grasped the deeper mysteries of the tradition. The latter will also be of interest to those persuing an interest in the Golden Dawn and Thelemic traditions of Magick.

The book is illustrated with some line drawings and is presented in a format which makes it easy to find what you are looking for.

A most excellent book, yet again! Thank you.

Book Description

"This handy reference work covers everything most of us could ever want to know about the subject of ancient Egyptian daily-life and after-life charms, and should be on the shelf of every good personal library devoted to topics Egyptological."

KMT

Amulets are ornaments believed to endow the wearer by magical means with the properties they represent. They were first made in Egypt as early as 4000 BC and were essential adornments for both the living and the dead. Crafted from gold and silver, semiprecious stones, and less valuable materials, they are fine examples of Egyptian art as well as a vital source of evidence for religious beliefs.

In this book, Carol Andrews offers the first comprehensive account of the types of amulets made, their symbolism, and their protective powers. An amuletic foot could be worn to ensure fleetness of foot, a hand for dexterity. The desert-dwelling hare symbolized keenness of the senses, and the hedgehog, which hibernated and survived outside the fertile valley, held connotations of rebirth and triumph over death itself. The ubiquitous amulet in the shape of the dung beetle, known as a scarab, was symbolic of new life. Amulets in the image of powerful gods would be worn for protection, and malevolent creatures, like the male hippopotamus, would be worn to ward off the evil they represented.

Both a reference book and an informative account of Egyptian magical belief, this is the most complete survey of the subject to date.

5 out of 5 stars Egyptian Amulets.......2007-06-11

Still the best comprehensive reference on the subject.

"Amulets" covers a broad range of concepts and ideas that demonstrate what it meant to BE an ancient Egyptian. A superb account of gods, myths, legends, materials used, and most importantly, symbolism. The 112 pages are filled with excellent black & white and color close-ups demonstrating the great skills of the ancient craftsmen.

A great little book that every Egyptologist has on their bookshelf! Goes nicely with Cyril Aldred's "Jewels of the Pharaoh's" Jewels of the Pharaohs: Egyptian Jewelry of the Dynastic Period

4 out of 5 stars Good Survey Book.......2004-08-04

I used this book for my senior thesis in college. While the information is more or less generalized, Andrews still adequately covers the majority of Egyptian amulets in existence. It's definitely a great survey book about amulets from the pre-dynastic to the Graeco-Roman period.

Another plus is that it includes numerous color plates of different kinds of amulets from different periods in Egyptian history.

5 out of 5 stars impressive and compact introduction.......1999-06-20

This is a very nice and lovely done view into ancient craft. The tiny but nevertheless greatly powerful amulets give us an impression about their owners. After reading the book and consider the colourful pictures you feel very close with them.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok.......1998-12-16

I think this book didn't hold enough information. There should be more books about the same subjects, but with more info.

5 out of 5 stars A great book, written by oneof the leading experts on amulets.......1998-08-24

I had the pleasure of hearing the author lecture at an Egyptian conference at the Brooklyn Museum a few years ago. Her fascinatiing text and brilliant slides lose none of their impact as they find their way into print in this handsome little book. Some of Ancient Egypt's most beautiful and magical objects are the smallest in size, as evidenced by the amulets shown here by Ms. Andrews. Required reading for all Egypto-philes!

5 out of 5 stars Middle East Amulets.......2005-12-11

By Sir Budge, (1857-1934), curator of the Egyptian Antiquities in the British Museum, who also translated the "Egyptian Book of the Dead." From the book's preface: "I have described the principal amulets which were used by the Semitic peoples of Western Asia, Egypt, Nambia and Ethiopia. I have added a series of short chapters in which I have tried to set forth the principal theories about the powers of 'working' amulets, and the meaning of the inscriptions and symbols inscribed on them, and to indicate the beliefs concerning them which were held by the ancient Babylonian and Egyptian magicians, and by the later Kabbalists, Gnostics, both pagan and Christian, and astrologers. And I have incorporated in the many of the views of the astrologers, makers of horoscopes, casters of nativities, diviners, crystal gazers, palmists and fortune-tellers with who I came in contact in Egypt, the Sudan and Mesopotamia." The author discusses: the Evil Eye, and amulets used by: Arabs, Persians, Babylonians, Coptics, Egyptians, Abyssinians, Gnostic, Hebrew, Mandaeen, Phoenician, Samaritan, Syriac; the Ring amulet; beliefs concerning Divination by water or animal's livers or sand; the Hand of Fatima; Babylonian demon Humbaba, god Khepera, Rd, Thoth; the Seven Seals; and much, much more. Many photographs and illustrations. Originally published in 1930.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Divination System - Factory-Made Scarabs a Disappointment.......2005-10-29

The 4 Star Rating breaks down this way: 5 for the book, 1 for the scarabs.

I just bought this set and was really expecting something wonderful from the previous reviews. However, upon opening the box, I found myself vaguely dissapointed. The first thing I noticed was that in my set of 30 scarabs, I recieved a duplicate of one so I am missing the 30th scarab, because I have two of another. The second thing I noticed is that the scarabs are made from a soft, rubber-like plastic (they feel like erasers). Though they're well-formed and artistically attractive (I didn't care for the cheap-looking gold paint), they're not made from ceramic, clay or even acrylic, as I thought they might be. The included satin baggie is lovely, a better quality bag than the .35 organdy bag (I can get that exact same bag from CraftMart for .50 at most) that's included with the Llewellyn Deck and Book Tarot sets.

The book appears to be worth its own cover price of $12.95, but for $35 I was expecting something less cheaply made in the area of the scarabs.

I will be making my own scarab stones to use with this divination system eventually. For now I will have to mark one of the duplicates so it's disingushable from its twin in order to use the set and hope that Llewellyn sends me a proper replacement scarab.
I'm still trying to contact them (their customer service office was closed when I called this afternoon. I've emailed their customer service office).

I do think the system is really wonderful, being familiar with the basic system as described in deTraci's lovely "Mysteries of Isis" and expect to get quite a bit of use out of it.

I'd recommend buying the book alone if you can find it (it has been released as book only) and making your own scarabs with scarab beads or making them from polymer clay. The eraser-like scarabs included aren't worth the $35 price tag, I'm sorry.

Buy the book. Make your own scarabs.

    Blessings,
    Stormraven

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully done/Honestly believable!.......2005-08-13

This is my favorite divination device outside of tarot cards. The idea was conceived by the author through a series of dreams she had. Truely a magical experience in itself! The ancient people of Egypt used scarabs as a way of documentation of daily life. It is not hard to believe similar items were carried as a charm in everyday life. Therefore this is a great contribution to recontructionist ideas.

Appoximately 30 images come in a great little pouch that can be handily carried around as a possible talisman or charm. Many of the symbols were familiar to me as I had much experience with Egyptolgy in the past. The divinatory meanings are a little difficult to commit to memory at first. Much study and practice with the set results in a trusted system that can be used for many years.

I have not read with these for others yet. They have a private "feel" to them. I have always been attracted to Anubis and this was the first scarab I drew! There is much to be experienced with this set. It is well worth the investment if you like things Egyptian.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best non-tarot oracles I have seen.......2003-01-13

In my work as a professional psychic I use mainly tarot and playing cards, but when I read for myself I get easily bored, always looking for something new. The Egyptian Scarab Oracle is fascinating, easy to use, and very insightful. A friend of mine who is also a psychic recommended this set to me and told me to read the book cover to cover before using it for readings. Yeah, right. I just dove right in and read about each scarab individually as it came out of the pouch in response to my questions. Now I really am going to go back and read the book cover to cover, as I have discovered that I resonate with the Egyptian deities.

This set is great. Pick one up, you will not be disappointed.

    3 out of 5 stars Free Advice.......2001-11-07

Consumers are so lucky to be able to choose now from so many tools for divination. It is so important to pick the style that is right for you. If are intrigued by Egyptian culture, you will very much enjoy the Egyptian Scarab Oracle package. This kit includes the book "Sacred Scarabs for Divination and Personal Power," 30 scarab "runes," and a satin pouch. My first impression was one of humor, when I pulled out the sack of Egyptian scarabs and peeled off the "Made in China" sticker! You have to admit that is funny. They are still very Egyptian-looking little bugs, though, and they feel good to work with. The author created this oracle based on a magical dream. The text is very informative and provides different layouts and eplanations for readings. It will only take time to familiarize yourself though, with the names of the scarab symbols. Until you do, it is rather difficult to refer to the right page for a description. I would have called one "Alaskan Ulu Knife," but it really is found under "Solar Barque of Ra." The "Throne of Isis" scarab to me, resembles a Tetris game piece. The scarabs are not numbered or colored from each other, so it does take some time to familiarize yourself with their names to look them up quickly. You might not sit down and do a great reading your first time in 10 minutes, but the powerful symbols, gods, and goddesses of the scarab are well worth the time for you to learn about them.

Elevating silk painting to a high art form, this lushly illustrated book turns simple scarf decoration on its head. Some of the painted designs are so intricately detailed they look almost like photographs; others resemble glorious watercolor paintings. Techniques and tools are clearly explained, as are working with color and exploring design ideas. Be forewarned, however: a good portion of the book is devoted to advanced techniques, so the novice silk painter may not be able to jump right in. But for those with some prior experience, this volume really shines as a source of instruction and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to have.......2004-04-13

I hope this book will be back in print. It is beautifully illustrated and shows more than the standard silk painting techniques. The author introduces us, step-by-step, to various Asian techniques, which are really interesting. This book is written for beginning and advanced silk painters, so she also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various dyes, waxes and resists, how to use them on various silks, and which tools (both Western and Asian) work best -- accompanied by lots of photographs so that you know what she is talking about.
              It's a book worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Moyer's two books are the best available on silk painting.......1999-04-04

This is Moyer's second book. You need to understand her first book well before getting this one. But then DEFINITELY get it. Several other silk painting authors have followed a good first book with terrible 2nd and 3rd ones. That is certainly not true of Moyer. This book is every bit as excellent as her wonderful first book.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Just Keeps Working.......1999-01-30

This book contains a lot of basic, hands-on info on equipment and practical aspects of silk painting technique. What I have noticed most, is that everytime I go back to this book as my skill and experience increase, I grasp and learn more. Things I didn't pick up at all on from my earlier readings suddenly become real and make sense. This book concentrates heavily on wax, gutta and screen printing techniques. Roketsu-zome and alcohol techniques are covered in a very step-by-step, practical way. There is a lot of surface design, as well as garment design info. If you are interested in block printing, bleach discharge, or shibori, you would do better to choose another title. Complex Cloth by Dunneworld is another fabulous textile book that covers almost every technique. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The Number Two Book of Silk Painters.......1998-09-07

If you are a serious silk painter, this is the book for you. Beginners need to start with the first Susan Moyer book which contains a plethora of info for those just starting. If you silk paint as a hobby or just for fun, this is it! Suusan Moyer obviously loves silk as much as you do!
