Book Description

This book explains in detail why and how to use management intensive grazing, and what to expect from its use for most kinds of livestock. I provide many examples to illustrate fine points, including producing milk, beef, and lamb on pasture alone, nutrient cycling, grounding energizers, recovery periods, economics, and much more. I present everything that I learned during 17 years of using Voisin management on my own farm, and answer all questions that have been asked me during conferences and farm visits with farmers. This book shows a way to increase your farm's profitability and reduce its labor demand -- thereby improving your quality of life -- while properly and responsibly caring for the land and the plants and animals that live on it.

4 out of 5 stars Murphy teach us the basics, once again........2007-01-11

Murphy's book is a comprehensive review of Voisin Grass Productivity book complemented with his own experience in Vermont.
I read it and found it very helpful in my search for milk production productivity and profits in my dairy farm in the Coffee area of Colombia.
I am still looking for books or experiences with Voisin rational grazing in the Tropics, where we use mainly grass to feed our cows outside and have followed feed companies advise on supplementing grains and feedstuffs, without questioning prices of grass, milk, corn silage and supplemental feeds.
If Murphy worked with the Voisin system in Brasil it would be great to have his experience written in a second book for Latin America.

5 out of 5 stars Rational vs Rotational - This concept could change your farming life forever..........2005-08-28

Challenge your thinking and change your ways. Your pastures will thrive, your animals will be healthier and you'll have more time to lay in the hammock instead of throwing hay bales around. Andre Voisin, a French farmer, biologist and chemist--as well as a teacher at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine in Paris, designed a system that he calls "rational grazing" (as opposed to the generic term "rotational grazing"). Rational grazing takes into account the needs of the animal and plant, rather than the animal alone. The term "rational grazing" can mean two things: the thinking way of grazing management, or a system for rationing out the forage. Interested? Then read the book!

5 out of 5 stars Greener Pasture on Your Side of the Fence: Better Farming Vo.......2002-12-24

Loved this book - although I have only one horse and can not do some of the intensive grazing techniques, I do have a better understanding about maintaining the pastures. This has been very useful and will enable me to get together with the neigbors and do several horses on the pastures in rotation. We will all have more edible forage for the horses.

5 out of 5 stars Has what it takes!.......2001-12-06

I'm reading this book for the third time - there's just too much info to digest in one reading. We are just starting with cattle and are using this book as our bible. It not only explains the many advantages of raising animals using managment intensive grazing (more profit, environmentally friendly, humane, better nutrition, ease of animal handling), it goes into great detail on HOW to do it. My husband used the chapter on fencing to select products that have received many positive comments from visitors to the farm. I especially enjoyed reading about pasture plant diversity and how cattle "harvest" it. Our cattle look (and taste) great, much to the shock of long-time cattle farmers in our community who are surprised that two greenhorns like us can do so well. We attribute our success to this book and highly recommend it.

Book Description

The one issue on which all horse owners agree is that proper diet and nutrition are the most essential aspects of horse care. In Storey's Guide to Feeding Horses, equine nutritionist Melyni Worth addresses the many ways in which diet impacts a horse's health, temperament, and performance.

Worth covers the basics, discussing the details of the nutrients every horse needs, and how to calculate rations based on the horse's body weight. She also explains the benefits of grains and grasses, as well as the relative value of additives and herbal supplements. And, she teaches owners how to design a balanced feeding program for their horses.

Perhaps most important is the chapter on "Feeding for a Lifetime." Here, Worth outlines the proper diet a horse needs at every age and at every level of activity. She describes the healthiest formula for foals and the most nutritional diet for brood mares and performance horses. Nutrition for elderly horses receives special attention here, with valuable information on soft feed for aged horses that have trouble chewing. Worth also identifies the treats that are best for horses, and how to overcome a horse's food-related vices. Finally, Worth offers guidance on pasture maintenance and how to store feed safely.

This book also includes advice on seasonal feeding routines. For example, since fiber is essential for warmth, owners should make certain their horses receive plenty of hay in the winter. During the summer, horses should have free access to fresh water and loose salt. Worth concludes with a detailed discussion of nutritional disorders and their remedies.

Comprehensive and authoritative, yet easy to understand and packed with advice that is easy to put into action, Storey's Guide to Feeding Horses is an essential reference horse owners will turn to time and again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any horse owner.......2007-07-09

This book is wonderful. It explains what to feed, how to feed, where to feed and all the "why"s associated. It will make you want to know everything about what is in your horses feed and find the highest quality hay and pasture.

It is an invaluable resource for horse owners who have realized that trusting a feed company to supply complete nutrition is not always a wise decision. This book can give someone the tools to create their own feed mixture and save money while improving thier horses' health.

Perhaps if more horse owners were armed with this information, feed companies would be forced to supply costomers with better information about their products.

5 out of 5 stars The first book for livestock owners .......2007-07-08

Today more than ever livestock producers need to be looking at raising their animals on grass instead of grain. With corn prices going up because of the ethanol plants you have no choice but look for better options and grass was a better choice before corn started going up.

Allan Nation is the king of "Grass Fed" movement in the US. While one book is not large enough to tell you everything about moving your farm to a grass fed operation this gives you enough information to get started.

This book shows you both the "how to" and "how much will it cost" aspect of the grass biz. It also gives you a number of different new business opportunities.

My brother gave me this book and it gathered dust for two years. The only complaint that I have (Other than I was dumb for being pi headed and waiting two years to read it) is that he spends a lot of time showing you how you can feed dairy cows on a grass only operation. I realize that he was making the point that if a dairy can make it then sheep, goats, and commercial cattle will have "no problem".

    Book Description

This book assembles in one volume a range of methods used by plant and animal production scientists to study grassland vegetation and animal performance. It replaces a previous volume Measurement of Grassland Vegetation and Animal Production, CAB Bulletin No. 52, published in 1978, which is now very dated. However, subjects covered in the previous book have been reconstructed completely and many new topics have been added, to reflect current research priorities.

Grasslands around the world provide most of the world's milk and wool and much of the meat. The growing world population and global warming have put increased pressure on the world's grasslands. Ross Humphreys has played a leading role in the development of grassland science and in this authoritative review discusses how it has evolved over the past sixty years. Using the proceedings of the International Grassland Congress since 1937, Humphreys identifies the shifting emphasis of the science, assesses the current situation and provides perspectives for its future direction.

              Book Description

At a time when the health and future viability of the world's ocean is becoming a subject of growing social, political and ecological concern, Elmer A. Keen has offered a timely and thought provoking analysis of the present use of the marine fishery resources. To permit marine fisheries to remain viable, Keen argues that their current management as common resources must be changed and suggests a paradigm by which a top-to-bottom reformation of the industry to one based on ownership of the resource, coupled with profit incentives for the resource owner, might be accomplished. Revisionary when new, this book is now considered near the mainstream of thinking about the management of marine fisheries and the conservation of this important resource.
