Exquisite Alien Architecture.......2000-06-20
No one who has ever ranted at the unimaginative architectural desert of any given major city of the world can resist the sheer originality and genius of Antoni Gaudi. Barcelona must be the luckiest city in the world!
The book gives a brief introduction to the life of the artist (including the tragic way he died), but the bulk of the book focuses on his major works, from his first commission, the tile palace Casa Vicens to the famous still unfinished Sagrada Familia. Beautiful photographs of interiors as well as exteriors are supported by a descriptive prose. What I enjoyed most were the details of furniture, specially designed fittings (stained glass windows, lamps, tiles) and of course the colourful mosaics which feature on several projects. And what Gaudi does with the arch structure is truly reverent!
The only other artist I know of who does such amazing things with building forms is Hundertwasser - but I think it is clear that Gaudi's formal architectural training has given his designs an edge of superiority. He plays with form and structure with incredible confidence, and the results are not just interesting for their novelty, but also that this 'art' is actually practical, and amazingly conforms to the laws of physics!
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to vicariously enjoy the beauty and innovation of Gaudi. It can serve as a reminder for those lucky enough to have seen the buildings - and for the rest of us, another reason to visit Barcelona in the future.

Excellent introduction for the amateur enthusiast.......1999-10-19
I visited Barcelona this summer on a day trip from our family holiday in Costa Dorada. I was drawn mainly by the opportunity to see first hand the amazing works of art by Antoni Gaudi which I had heard about since childhood. I was not disappointed and my wife and kids loved it too. I just didn't have enough time to see everything I wanted to, so when I came home I wanted to buy a book with great photos and a bit of explanation for the layman. This book certainly does that although as a layman I don't know what serious students of architecture would make of it

a must have for the floral painter.......2004-06-27
I love this book- Patricia Moran is an incredibly talented painter. The paintings are sumptuous and detailed, with lots of useful instruction. I also recommend Joyce Pike's books on floral painting along with this one, as the most useful ones I've found.
For those who want to paint, but cannot draw.......2001-04-18
Pat Moran takes a very painterly approach to her art. As she explains and illustrates, painting is about presenting to the viewer ranges of hues and contrasts. Our eyes and brain will make the picture if presented with the right information, it is not necessary to (or even preferable) to spell it out with a detailed drawing. Nevertheless, she also provides the standard proportions for the face or torso so the portrait you're doing will look "correct." I found this book helpful in developing the art of seeing and translating that onto the canvas. Her flower paintings are quite evocative, and provide an excellent model. Although not covered in this book, her approach will work with landscapes. In fact, the upside down exercise should convince you that if you get the tonal range, contrast, and proportions correct, the painting will emerge in the eye of the beholder.

Not enough variety of types of paintings shown........2006-02-19
Nice photos of the art but not enough technique shown and not enough variety in brushstrokes.
An inspiring book.......2000-11-13
The author is a warm and intelligent painter who expresses her passion for painting. and inspired a sense of excitement and possibilities in me. The chapter on drawing is extremely helpful. Although the paintings shown are mainly traditional in composition, there is a filip of creativity in subject matter and composition that is moving forward. I believe I can transfer the lessons to painting that I attempt here in the cold and rawness of Canada, Europe being beyond my reach....
A "generous" book.......2000-03-29
Generous with sumptuous photographs of her work; generous with sharing her techniques and colors and study sources; generous in giving me the feeling that I can paint stills as wonderful as hers. Thank you Joe Anna.
Excellent guide to still life........1998-04-20
This is an excellent book. Written the way she teaches a workshop. My first impression of her as a person was that she was an intelligent woman, this book is well thought out and a great help to anyone wishing to paint still life.

Painting Flowers the Van Wyk Way.......2007-04-02
Another great book from this author and painter. Again, a great variety of work and examples are shown, with excellent practical and easy to understand instructions.
Flower Painting.......2006-05-21
This book is really well organized in a step by step understanding on the basics of compostion, color mixing (the actual paint to obtain a certain color),color fundamentals, brushes, and background when painting flowers. If a person is new to painting, the basics are here. However, it does lack detailed step by step demonstrations that will guide a person from the start of a painting to the finish. Only brief general demontrations are in this book. If a person wants to know how to brush stroke a leaf, make a stem, and a pedal I would suggest in addition to using this book another book on brush stroke techniques. There are lots of beautiful paintings in this book. Just looking at the photos helped me to figure out the brush strokes but then I have some experience in painting, mostly portraits. Not having painting lots of flowers before, I wondered "do I start in the middle? or the outside of a flower?" I don't beleive it is mentioned in this book. I found in another book that I would start in the center when painting roses, and tulips are different, and so are poppies on where to begin. A rough outline on the sphere and anatomy of flowers is given in Helen's book which realy helps when painting.
exceptional book.......2000-06-10
As a lover of flowers and a painter I truly enjoyed this book. Readers will find a step by step guide into the world of painting and be guided into the specifics of painting flowers. Tha author gives a through and one of the most complete explanations of the basic components of a painting. Her explanations for the values Composition,Drawing, Motivation, Color, Harmony and Tone value are excellent and well worth the price of the book and make you feel part of an actual art class. Illustrations are magnificent and the authors personal experience and tips are nopt only helpful in the art of flower painting, amateur or professional, but become actual blessings. It is truly a book worth owning.

Quintessential Book on Flower Essences.......2003-06-15
If you read just one book on Flower Essences, this is the one to read. Ms. Wright takes using Flower Essences to a whole new level. I will admit I was a little skeptical at first by what is being put forth in this book and I was unsure as to where to start. I have now gotten my feet wet and I am trying some of the various techniques covered. I was taught that flower essences just treated emotional problems. In this book, Ms. Wright takes it farther. After all, if you take a wholistic approach to health, then you know that illness starts on the emotional, mental & spiritual levels and then filters down. Therefore, you can realistically say that treating your emotional, etc problems would greatly benefit your overall health. I also realized that when I have a cathartic reaction to a course of essences, that I can just retest myself when that happens to address the issue that has come up. But read the book for yourself and expand your use of flower essences.

A gorgeous, informative, and truely inspiring book!!!.......1999-01-16
Ms Moran delights us with her impressionistic work. Her subject is vases of large, informal bouquets of flowers. After an introduction depicting the materials and tools she prefers, she goes trough detailed demonstrations showing and explaining the various stages of a painting . The book is full of pertinent advice on composition and execution .She devotes a section on drawing, and how to measure and be accurate. She addresses the topic of lost and found edges. She talks about about tonal values and brushwork. There is an interesting page of catchphrases she uses when teaching . I feel this book would be very helpful to any aspiring artist because of the specific advice and guidelines given.I also believe an accomplished artist would enjoy the beauty of Ms Moran painting and would find interest in some of the unconventional advice. This is my most favorite book on the subject of painting flowers in oil!

The Art of Aromatherapy: The Healing and Beautifying Properties of the Essential Oils of Flowers and Herbs .......2005-11-08
This is a great book for both the beginner and practising Aromatherapist. His health of knowledge is clearly demonstrated in the discussion on essential oils - It's a must.
Tisserand is one of the foremost authorities on Aromatherapy and has published many books.
In our natural therapy college, we strongly recommend his books to all our medical aromatherapy students. It's on our Bookshelf and we use it regularly.
The lack of an in-depth index is a bit troublesome, however, after you've read the book you'll have less and less trouble finding what you want.
Too difficult to research.......2000-07-27
This book may contain great information, but unless you're committed to sitting down and reading it cover to cover, this won't be your most helpful resource. This book has no index in the back, so if you want to look up a specific topic, you've only got chapter and section headings, and then you have to scan through pages and pages to find what you're looking for. I've got 4 aromatherapy books, and I barely ever crack this one open because it's too much work to find what I'm looking for. There are much better books out there!
The Art of Aromatherapy.......2000-06-15
The Art of Aromatherapy, written by one of the foremost experts in Aromatherapy, Robert Tisserand, is a wonderfully packed book for beginners in the study of Aromatherapy. Filled with basic information on essential oils and how to use them, he goes on to add how essential oils are used by the body through inhallation. How these scents affect the digestive system, cardio-vascular system, lymph system etc. He discusses skin care, massage, gives some excellent aromatic recipes, covers 28 oils in depth, includes a glossary of medical terms, and a therapeutic index. I think this is a must for the beginner, who wants good, solid information on Aromatherapy.
Comprehensive , informative, and a pleasure to read........2000-06-01
As a serious aromatherapist, I highly recommend this book for a variety of reasons. The subject matter that Tisserand delves into is quite diverse, and extremely interesting. The basics of essential oils are explained in readily understandable terms, which ties in nicely with a descriptive narrative of their use in ancient times. Chinese principles of Yin/Yang, life force, and organics is also discussed. I particularly enjoyed the religiosity that Mr. Tisserand incorporates into this chapter! To broaden the subject matter further, reasons why aromas effect us is presented in detail, followed by uses of oils in the specific body systems, as well as those which are used for treating the mind. The book introduces baths, various massage techniques, and skin care utilizing oils. Also provided are many simple but useful recipes and clear instructions. The second half of this excellent book discusses 29 essential oils themselves in great detail. What is totally unique are the authors' tables. They compare odor intensity, evaporation rate, whether an oil is Yin or Yang, and which planet rules it! The glossary of medical terms is a must for any serious aromatherapy student, as is the therapeutic index. Recent safety precautions are listed, and should be reviewed. Finally, The Art Of Aromatherapy has a wonderful, CURRENT list of available sources for the purchase of quality oils. It is obvious to me why this book has become an international best-seller. I unequivocally recommend it to anyone interested in aromatherapy, which truly is an art.
