    Product Description

At the beginning of the last century, physicists revolutionised the scientific view of the world. Today biologists are radically transforming our understanding of the processes of life and cognition. Probing the mysteries of the mind, they have been able to prove that, in the act of knowing, the observer and the observed, subject and object, are inextricably enmeshed. The world we live in is not independent from us; we literally bring it forth ourselves. One of the protagonists of this new kind of thinking is the internationally renowned neurobiologist and systems theorist Humberto R. Maturana who was interviewed for several weeks by Bernhard Poerksen, journalist, and communication scientist. In this book, they explore the limits of our cognitive powers, discuss the truth in perception, the biology of love, and give, all in all, an introduction to systemic thinking that is down to earth, imaginative, and rich in anecdote.

1 out of 5 stars Get Students To Hate Science.......2004-11-07

If you want to turn off every student who walks through your science class door, then use this book. There are many problems with this book.
First, it is so dry and boring that it makes the average science textbook look like the next nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. I realize that the authors don't want to overly romanticize science, but they go too far and destroy any excitement of discovery that might have happened. By completely removing ANY excitment these scientists might have experienced it makes science look even more boring.
Second, their cases read like a slightly elaborated time line and the scientists have about as much personality and emotion as a cardboard cutout. This leads to the scientists in this book appearing to be simply black boxes that take in all the presently available information and then churn out an answer that fits for their historical point in time. The job of a scientist in this book appears to be about as interesting and exciting as the local garbage man (no offense!) who just churns through the same old day, day after day with little or no excitement along the way.
Finally, and this is partly my fault maybe, I assumed that this book would reflect Dr. Allchin's currently available work. Either his outlook changed in the years following this book, or this is somekind of a joke. If you like his current work you will be tempted by this book, but don't buy it, it does not fit his current direction.
If you want to read some good history of science cases that might actually have something interesting in them to excite your students, then look into The Double Helix, The Scientists, or The Seashell On The Mountain Top.

5 out of 5 stars A must book for good biology teachers........1997-06-16

This thin volume gives great historical perspectives on the problems of developing some of the major ideas in biology. For example when discussing beriberi the authors point out the problem of trying to overcome the current influence of Pasteur and Koch's postulates. Almost until Eijkman's death scientists were searching for a microorganism that lived on the polished rice. Grinjins research was to lead to the nutrient deficiency concept. The questions that accompany the text are thought provoking rather than recall. A very refreshing approach to questioning. For example. "Between 1885 and 1906, 17 different researchers claimed to have found the microorganism that caused beriberi. Other researchers, including Koch, had searched for the infectious agent and failed to find one. They concluded that beriberi was not bacterial at all. From the perspective of someone who thought that beriberi was infectious, suggest several reasons why Eijkman, Koch, and others might have failed. Was failure to find a pathogen definitive in this case? Where should the burden of proof lie here?"

    Book Description

In this provocative new addition to the acclaimed Theology and the Sciences series, Patricia Williams assays the doctrine of original sin with a scientific lens and offers an alternative Christian account of human nature's sinfulness and redemption based on sociobiology.

Focusing on the Genesis 2 and 3 account, Williams shows how its “historical” interpretation in early Christianity not only misread the text but derived an idea of being human profoundly at odds with experience and contemporary science. After gauging Christianity's several competing notions of human nature—Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox—against contemporary biology, Williams turns to sociobiological accounts of the evolution of human dispositions toward reciprocity and limited cooperation as a source of human good and evil. From this vantage point, she offers new interpretations of the problem of evil, original sin, and the Christian doctrine of atonement.

Frank in its assessment of traditional misunderstandings, Williams's work challenges theologians and all Christians to reassess this linchpin doctrine and its implications for Christian theology.

          Book Description

This is the first English translation of Schleiermacher's Dialectic, the first of his eight forays into the foundations of thinking that aims at knowing. This text, representing Schleiermacher's succinct preparatory notes for his 1811 lectures, offers a remarkably apt introduction to his thought at the onset of the modern age. This study edition features extensive notes and commentary by the translator, and indexes of names and places, subjects and concepts.

From the supplier: The use of instructional video strategies allows students to understand and experience the outside world. One example of this strategy is the video-based unit on camouflage entitled 'Incognito.' The video teaches students about the color, pattern and shape of animals and how these protect them from predators. It is suggested that the video be accompanied by pre-viewing activities which include a toothpick hunt that demonstrates how colors keep animals hidden from view. A hands-on activity allows students to create their own creatures and participate in a creature hunt.

                Description:
Selective tidal-streaming is a model frequently used to explain how planktonic larvae invade estuaries. The ability of larvae to move vertically in the water column to selectively ride favourable currents and maintain ground gained is critical to this process. The mud crab (Scylla serrata) is a widely distributed, commercially and recreationally important portunid crab but little is known about its estuarine recruitment mechanisms or the vertical migration behaviour of its megalopae. In studies of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), important factors identified in the recruitment mechanism include altered vertical swimming behaviours in estuarine and offshore water and an endogenous circadian rhythm. Using laboratory experiments we examined the vertical displacement response of mud crab megalopae to illumination in estuarine and offshore water during the day and the night. Mud crab megalopae released into 1 m high towers swam higher when illuminated than when in darkness. This behaviour was repeated during the day and the night and in offshore and estuarine water. Given the apparent indifference to water type and the fact that mud crab megalopae are rarely caught in estuaries, we propose the model that these crabs do not invade estuaries as megalopae, but settle and metamorphose into small crabs on the coastal shelf before moving along the sea bed into estuarine habitats.

                      Book Description

Cluster physics is the foundation of the increasingly important field of nanotechnology. Clusters, ranging in size from a few to many millions of atoms, constitute a fascinating field of research in physics, chemistry and materials science. They are formed by most of the elements of the Periodic Table, and the types of bonding and the resultant clusters are equally as varied. This book introduces atomic clusters, ranging from weakly-bonded clusters of argon to strongly-bonded carbon clusters and metal nano-particles. It includes worked examples to enable lecturers and students to gauge their understanding and progress. Atomic and Molecular Clusters describes the experimental generation, detection and interrogation of clusters and theoretical approaches developed to aid understanding of their physical properties. It classifies clusters according to their bonding types and gives examples of present and possible future applications of clusters in electronic, optical and magnetic devices.

                              Book Description

This book focusses on basic science, but it also addresses engineers interested in new materials. Experiments on metal clusters are reviewed in two long pedagogically written articles. The theoretical courses cover three main domains: (1) electronic properties of metallic clusters and nanostructures, (2) phases and phase changes of small systems, and (3) chemical processes in nanoscale systems. Furthermore, interested readers, researchers as well as graduate students will find articles on density functional theory, magnetic properties of clusters, and computer simulations of cluster dynamics. In addition, the book addresses chemical processes, pairing correlation effects and also biological systems.

                                Book Description

This book covers important new developments of the last five years in the area of cluster chemistry, presenting an excellent view of the successes and shortcomings of both current state-of-the-art theory and experiment. Each chapter, contributed by a leading expert, places heavy emphasis on theory without which the detailed analysis of the spectroscopic and kinetic results would be compromised. The cluster reactions reviewed in this work include electron and proton transfer reactions, hot atom reactions, vibrational predissociation, radical reactions, and ionic reactions. Some of the theories applied throughout the text are product state distribution determinations, state-to-state dynamical information, and access to the transition stage of the reaction. The discussions serve as a benchmark of how far the field has come since the mid 1980's and will be a good update for students and researchers interested in this area of physical chemistry.

                                      Book Description

This book discusses small particles or clusters of atoms, molecules, as well as systems consisting of them. These are systems too large to be analyzed by the methods of particle dynamics, but too small to treated by the standard statistical techniques. The goal is to analyze the properties of such finite aggregates and their behavior in gases and plasmas, and to investigate processes that involve such clusters. The presentation is based on lectures and seminar problems for graduate students; the main part of the book thus includes more than 200 problems, each of them illustrating a specific aspect of finite systems of bound atoms and their behavior in gases and plasmas. Topics covered include: collisions, charge transfer, chemical reactions, condensed systems and their structures, kinetics of cluster growth, excited clusters, the transition from clusters to bulk particles, and small particles, dust, and aerosols in plasmas. Some reference data for corresponding parameters of systems under consideration are given in the problems and in the appendices. The book will be of interest to physicists, astrophysicists, and chemists.
