Book Description
Since the publication of the first edition in 1966, Eye and Brain has established itself worldwide as an essential introduction to the basic phenomena of visual perception. In this book, Richard L. Gregory offers clear explanations of how we see brightness, movement, color, and objects, and he explores the phenomena of visual illusions to establish principles about how perception normally works and why it sometimes fails. Although successive editions have incorporated new discoveries and ideas, Gregory completely revised and updated the book for this publication, adding more than thirty new illustrations. The phenomena of illusion continue to be a major theme in the book, in which the author makes a new attempt to provide a comprehensive classification system. There are also new sections on what babies see and how they learn to see, on motion perception, and tantalizing glimpses of the relationship between vision and consciousness and of the impact of new brain imaging techniques. In addition, the presentation of the text and illustrations has been improved by the larger format and new page design. The thousands of readers of the previous editions of Eye and Brain will find this new revised edition even more attractive and enthralling.
Customer Reviews:
GOOD TEXT BOOK.......2004-07-21
The book is very good but it is structured like a text book. Its couching is a little heavy, not flowing like the divulgation books.
I found some mistakes. For example, the author says that the electric field and the magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave are out of phase (a diagram is shown) and that is not true. Since electromagnetics is not the field of expertise of the author, this is understandable and does not devaluate the rest of the book.
Classic work on perception, updated.......2003-09-03
This is the classic introduction to perception and psychophysics, and remains as readable and entertaining as it was 30 years ago when I read the first edition. Gregory's was one of the few books on the subject accessible to the non-specialist that tackled some of the more difficult topics, such as how the physiology and anatomy of the eye contributes to perception, as in the case of physiological optics, retinal receptive field geometry, ocular domimance and saccadic eye movements, as well as other traditional areas such as color perception, space perception, and so on. There are also very engrossing discussions of split-brain experiments and optical illusions, probably the most fun part of the book for most people, which are worth reading just for themselves. Overall this is still a great book and one that everyone should read to gain better understanding of how their own visual systems and brains work to enable us to see and perceive the many simple and complex aspects of the visual world. After reading this book you'll have much of the background to read David Marr's later book, entitled simply Vision. This important work contains discussions of more complex visual cortical brain mechanisms and of Marr's important work in that area. Marr discusses his important concept of the "primal sketch" for extracting line primitives, which relates to retinal receptive-field geometry, and then works up from there to more sophisticated spatial-frequency filtering algorithms and mechanisms--ideas that revolutionized our understanding of vision and the brain.
coffee time book.......2003-08-05
eye and brain!!
best reard in coffee time...
A great introduction to the psychology of perception.......2000-05-13
Who would have thought that a book about the mechanics, physiology and psychology of seeing could be such a riveting read? This is one of the best popular science books around, and I don't even think Gregory intended it to be a layman's book--it's just so well written and interesting that it will delight lay readers as well as its intended student audience.
Gregory starts with a short chapter intended to outline some of the less-obvious issues in understanding how we see. Here, as well as throughout the book, he uses optical illusions to make points. The next chapters cover light itself, and the structure and function of the eye and brain, including accounts of how the eye evolved. The rest of the book discusses brightness, colour, and questions such as "How do we visually determine size?" and "Can machines be taught to see?"
The book is full of accounts of intriguing experiments and case-studies. Two examples of many: Gregory and a colleague, Jean Wallace, worked in 1961-1962 with a man of 52 whose sight was restored to him after a life of blindness. The account of his slow and incomplete adaptation to the world of sight, and his ultimate slide into depression and death (he had been active and capable as a blind person) is fascinating and moving. Another example: Gregory discusses various researchers who spent some time wearing vision apparatus that dramatically changed their perceptions, such as Stratton, Ewert and the Paterson's. In these cases--where for example the wearer could see their own body suspended in front of them, or see everything upside down--the details of the adaptations of perception are thought-provoking and still not completely understood.
Strongly recommended.
Book Description
For over thirty years, Nobel Prize winner David H. Hubel has been at the forefront of research on questions of vision. In Eye, Brain, and Vision, he brings you to the edge of current knowledge about vision, and explores the tasks scientists face in deciphering the many remaining mysteries of vision and the workings of the human brain.
Customer Reviews:
Stellar, fun book.......2006-12-13
I was fortunate enough to be Dr. Hubel's advisee as well as his seminar student (class size 12) my freshman year. We used Eye, Brain, and Vision as our textbook, and I must say that it is a stellar, groundbreaking book. Even at his age, Dr. Hubel has his quirks and fun sense of humor, and it shows in this book. For anybody with an interest in neurophysiology, the eye, or visual perception, this book should be a fun read. Highly recommended.
P.S. Dr. Hubel had "tea and cracker" breaks during our seminars. Fun.
No question about it.......2005-03-16
If you want to learn about Psychoanalysis, you read Freud.
If you want to learn about the general Theory of Relativity, you read Einstein.
If you want to learn about Eye, Brain and Vision, you read Hubel.
Seeing is Not Believing.......2003-08-15
This is a great book for anyone interested in how they are reading these words. How is it possible that particular cells in our body can differentiate among physical objects and send electronic flickerings to the brain that then interprets this collection of atoms into familiar objects - a computer, monitor, keyboard, words or letters?
The details are explained clearly with many good diagrams and illustrations. We get something on the history of vision, the cellular and neural interplay that has combined to produce this miracle we call sight, and the comparison of photoelectric and other artificial methods of seeing with our human one.
Another great addition to the Scientific American Library.
Overview of vision.......2000-11-27
This reference provides an easy to read overview of vision. There is an introduction to neurons and neural pathways, followed by an introduction to the eye and its receptive fields. The visual pathway from the eyes to the primary visual cortex is then discussed. Orientation-specific simple and complex cells in the striate cortex are discussed. The architecture and modules of the visual cortex are then discussed, followed by a discussion of stereopsis, color vision and development of the visual system.
Vision and Hubel's great book.......2000-07-23
If you want to know more about vision and curios about how we see the world, you shall read Hubel's book. Having done decades of research in vision, Hubel is one of the experts in the area. His language is simple and understandable. When you read this book, you will know more about how your brain works and how your cat sees you.

Book Description
The visual capacities of birds rival even those of primates, and their visual system probably reflects the operation of a ground plan common to all vertebrates. This book provides the first comprehensive and current review of considerable progress made over the past decade in analyzing neural and behavioral mechanisms mediating visually guided behavior in birds.
The book's five major sections deal with the visual world of birds, the organization of avian visual systems, the development and plasticity of visual structure and function, visuomotor control mechanisms, and cognitive processes. The introduction to each section discusses the nature and significance of the problem areas, providing a context for the chapters to follow, which review the current status of research on a specific problem. The contributors are an international assemblage of researchers, representing a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from ornithology to neurophysiology and including ethology, experimental psychology, anatomy, and developmental neurobiology.
For the ethologist, avian behavior is the source of a wide variety of species-typical "fixed action patterns"; for the experimental psychologist, birds are the subject of choice for studies of conditioning, learning, and cognitive processes; for the neurobiologist they provide model systems for studying developmental processes, sensory mechanisms, orientation, and motor control. For these reasons, research on the avian brain and behavior occupies an increasingly important place in contemporary behavioral biology.
H. Philip Zeigler is Professor of Biopsychology at Hunter College, City University of New York. Hans-Joachim Bischof is Professor of Behavioral Physiology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany.
Product Description
The case histories in this book are about people who endured devastating health problems or survived massive accidents, sometimes because of miracle surgery - but found their lives had become nightmares. They could not cope with daily chores, go shopping, drive or read. Their problems might be obvious like blurred vision, or more subtle like dizziness, nausea, clumsiness, poor balance and inability to concentrate. Often, as they trekked from doctor to doctor, they were told, "Sorry that's the way it is, there's nothing to be done." Yet there are solutions. Each case history tells of someone who eventually was helped by an optometrist who specialized in behavioral optometry. Each found immeasurable relief through optometric vision therapy. For decades, this therapy has helped young and old whose eyesight might be good but whose vision is not. Among them a roll call of sports teams that include the San Diego Padres, the Seattle Mariners, the New York Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys as well as U.S. Olympic medalists. When you learn how to Focus Your Mind's Eye, health, learning and behavior problems are often eased because hidden vision difficulties are eased. --- from book's back cover
