        Book Description

The unique treatise of Yuri P. Altukhov is based on several decades of research on natural communities, modelling them in experiments and with computer analysis. Essential features of species population structure, such as genetic population subdivision, hierarchical systemic organization, unrandom structure of gene migration, as well as factors and conditions of genetic stability of populations are revealed. Elucidating principles of stabilization of gene pools of agricultural animals and plants, the author discusses a strategy of conservation and sustainable management of natural gene pool resources. He considers the specificity of genetic processes in modern human populations and presents a new view on genetic mechanisms of speciation. New evidence is given for the adaptive value of molecular polymorphism in populations. The hypothesis of optimal genetic diversity of populations as the most important condition of their stable reproduction in generations and the principles of rational interaction of human with nature are treated in detail.

As our closest evolutionary relatives, nonhuman primates are integral elements in our mythologies, diets and scientific paradigms, yet most species now face an uncertain future through exploitation for the pet and bushmeat trades as well as progressive habitat loss. New information about disease transmission, dietary and economic linkage, and the continuing international focus on conservation and primate research have created a surge of interest in primates, and focus on the diverse interaction of human and nonhuman primates has become an important component in primatological and ethnographic studies. By examining the diverse and fascinating range of relationships between humans and other primates, and how this plays a critical role in conservation practice and programs, Primates Face to Face disseminates the information gained from the anthropological study of nonhuman primates to the wider academic and non-academic world.

                Book Description

Gifford Lecturer and Templeton Prize winner Holmes Rolston, III is widely known as the father of environmental ethics. From his authorship of one of the first articles in professional environmental philosophy ("Is there an Ecological Ethic?" 1975) to his most recent article on the place of humanity in the cosmos ("Generating Life on Earth: Five Looming Questions" 2007) no author has taken a more prominent role in mapping out the terrain in environmental philosophy. His writings range between natural philosophy and theology and include detailed presentations of an interlocking position that includes aesthetics, value theory, natural resource policy, wilderness advocacy, and sustainable development.

"Nature Value and Duty: Life on Earth with Holmes Rolston, III" is a collection of contemporary writings on the work of Holmes Rolston, III. The authors contributing to this volume are a mixture of senior scholars in environmental ethics and new voices in philosophy and in literature. Together they provide an in depth evaluation of many of the topics discussed by Rolston. They probe the strengths and weaknesses of his work and suggest valuable correctives. Rolston himself, in a detailed reply to each of his critics at the end of the volume, reveals where some of these criticisms sting him the most and in the process provides one of the most detailed and articulate defenses of his position ever offered.

                      Book Description

This volume is a collection of papers concerning the biology of large branchiopod crustaceans: Anostraca, Conchostraca, and Notostraca. Many of the individual papers were first presented at the Third International Large Branchiopod Symposium (ILBS-3) held at the University of San Diego, CA, USA, July 15-18, 1996. Contributions on additional topics from participants at the symposium, and from colleagues not able to join us in San Diego, are also included. In addition, there is a supplement to the 1995 `Checklist of the Anostraca'.
The theme of the ILBS-3 was `understanding and conserving large branchiopod diversity'. Researchers from around the world presented papers on a variety of topics related to conservation of large branchiopods, with contributions ranging from alpha-taxonomy and zoogeography to community structure and studies of ecology and evolution. One important issue developed in many of the papers in this volume is the need to advance our understanding of basic aspects of branchiopod biology throughout the world in order to enhance our efforts to conserve them. Although we have made important strides in understanding the biology of large branchiopods, we have, with few notable exceptions, made little progress in assuring the conservation of their diversity. We hope this volume will supply the reader with new ideas, and generate enthusiasm for research and public education efforts on behalf of branchiopod conservation.

                        Book Description

This volume is devoted to the qualitative investigation of two-dimensional polynomial dynamical systems and is aimed at solving Hilbert's Sixteenth Problem on the maximum number and relative position of limit cycles. The author presents a global bifurcation theory of such systems and suggests a new global approach to the study of limit cycle bifurcations.

The obtained results can be applied to higher-dimensional dynamical systems and can be used for the global qualitative analysis of various mathematical models in mechanics, radioelectronics, in ecology and medicine.

Audience: The book would be of interest to specialists in the field of qualitative theory of differential equations and bifurcation theory of dynamical systems. It would also be useful to senior level undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and specialists working in related fields of mathematics and applications.

                          Book Description

Technical problems often lead to differential equations with piecewise-smooth right-hand sides. Problems in mechanical engineering, for instance, violate the requirements of smoothness if they involve collisions, finite clearances, or stick-slip phenomena. Systems of this type can display a large variety of complicated bifurcation scenarios that still lack a detailed description. This book presents some of the fascinating new phenomena that one can observe in piecewise-smooth dynamical systems. The practical significance of these phenomena is demonstrated through a series of well-documented and realistic applications to switching power converters, relay systems, and different types of pulse-width modulated control systems. Other examples are derived from mechanical engineering, digital electronics, and economic business-cycle theory.

The topics considered in the book include abrupt transitions associated with modified period-doubling, saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, the interplay between classical bifurcations and border-collision bifurcations, truncated bifurcation scenarios, period-tripling and -quadrupling bifurcations, multiple-choice bifurcations, new types of direct transitions to chaos, and torus destruction in nonsmooth systems.

In spite of its orientation towards engineering problems, the book addresses theoretical and numerical problems in sufficient detail to be of interest to nonlinear scientists in general.

                            Book Description

This book provides an introduction to degree theory and its applications to nonlinear differential equations. It uses an applications-oriented to address functional analysis, general topology and differential equations and offers a unified treatment of the classical Brouwer degree, the recently developed S 1-degree and the Dold-Ulrich degree for equivalent mappings and bifurcation problems. It integrates two seemingly disparate concepts, beginning with review material before shifting to classical theory and advanced application techniques.

                              Product Description

This book covers comprehensive bifurcation theory and its applications to dynamical systems and partial differential equations (PDEs) from science and engineering, including in particular PDEs from physics, chemistry, biology, and hydrodynamics. The book first introduces bifurcation theories recently developed by the authors, on steady state bifurcation for a class of nonlinear problems with even order nondegenerate nonlinearities, regardless of the multiplicity of the eigenvalues, and on attractor bifurcations for nonlinear evolution equations, a new notion of bifurcation.

                                Book Description

In the past three decades, bifurcation theory has matured into a well-established and vibrant branch of mathematics. This book gives a unified presentation in an abstract setting of the main theorems in bifurcation theory, as well as more recent and lesser known results. It covers both the local and global theory of one-parameter bifurcations for operators acting in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, and shows how to apply the theory to problems involving partial differential equations. In addition to existence, qualitative properties such as stability and nodal structure of bifurcating solutions are treated in depth. This volume will serve as an important reference for mathematicians, physicists, and theoretically-inclined engineers working in bifurcation theory and its applications to partial differential equations.

                                    Book Description

This work deals effectively and systematically with the main contents of modern analytical methods of nonlinear science, dynamic systems and the basic concepts of the theory and its applications in engineering. While many books consider systems involving only a few unknowns, a real engineering system involves thousands, and this work emphasises the reduction of the number of these unknowns while capturing the essential physical phenomena. Methods of Liapunov-Schmidt reduction, central manifold, normal form and averaging are discussed in detail. Computational methods for harmonic balance, normal form, symplectic integration and invariant torus are studied. Finally, applications to solid mechanics, rotating shaft, flutter and galloping are given. This book can be used as a textbook or reference guide to the subject by undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in areas such as mechanics, mathematics, physics and a wide range of related scientific disciplines. It will also be valuable as a reference book for teachers, researchers and engineering designers.

5 out of 5 stars Moves Chaos Into Engineering.......2004-01-24

Chaos has been a fascinating and fruitful field for scientists in the last twenty years. It has immensely deepened our understanding of nature. The ideas of basins of attraction, Julia sets, stability in chaotic systems and others have been discovered and been found quite valid.

During much of this, engineers have probably glanced at it with interest. But until recently, engineering systems did not deal with it or invoke even the presence or possibility of chaotic behaviour. Which is why this book is promising. It moves chaos firmly into the engineering sphere.

Most of the discussion is on dynamical systems, with remarks on the impact on traditional control systems theory of the presence of chaos. The mathematical treatment is fairly sophisticated, and engineering readers should probably already be quite well versed in understanding dynamical systems.
