Book Description

Some 360 million years ago the ancestors of today's reptiles and amphibians emerged from the sea to take on the challenge of land. This successful venture climaxed in a spectacular 140-million-year domination of the Earth by the dinosaurs. Today there are more than 11,000 species of reptiles and amphibians living in all parts of the world. Their behavior and physiology are as complex as those of birds and mammals, and they are equally well-adapted to the astonishingly varied environments they inhabit. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between the species and their habitats will it be possible for us to ensure their survival. This Second Edition of Reptiles and Amphibians is a magnificently illustrated book, with highly comprehensive and authoritative text, written by the world's leading herpetologists. The book has more than 200 superb color photographs and 100 original paintings, maps, and diagrams. It is an up-to-date and definitive volume that chronicles the life-histories of some of nature's most secretive yet remarkable creatures.

4 out of 5 stars A fine reference.......2001-06-27

I am not trained in zoology and approach this subject as a complete amateur and a beginner amateur at that. This book is lavishly illustrated with expert and precise drawings as well as breathtaking photography that is more than adequat in conveying the beauty and complexity of the book's subject matter.

The "Key Facts" corner of every chapter gives useful basic information, e.g. the biggest and smallest of snakes, lizards or whatever - and how many are endangered. One cutaway view of a rattlesnake's rattle is particularly fascinating, though it only leaves me asking for more internal anatomical views.

While the writing is generally good, it sometimes lapses into a specialist's jargon that leaves us amateurs scratching our heads. Even when words like "lamellae" and "setae" are explained, might it just suffice to call them "overlapping plates" and "projections" respectively when discussing how geckos can "stroll on the ceiling"? I found myself looking back to check on what term meant what. Also, rather than a photograph, a drawing of the gecko foot might be more revealing - and there the scientific terms could be introduced.

But this is a minor complaint. I have no regrets whatsover about purchasing this book. it is a brilliant and spectacular tribute to the animal world's great wonders.

Book Description

Mammals are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom; most are beautiful, and many are highly intelligent and have intricate social systems. They are found in all kinds of habitats; they may have fur, scales, or spines; they move by hopping, swimming, running, or flying. What all mammals share, apart from certain anatomical similarities, is the unique ability to nourish their young with milk from mammary glands.
Many species of mammals are severely threatened by habitat destruction and encroachment, and some face extinction within the near future. A better understanding and appreciation of mammals by humans is essential to their survival.
This lavishly illustrated book presents in a lively and visually stimulating way the most recent findings of scientific research. Authoritative text written by the world's leading mammalogists is enhanced by over 200 superb photographs and over 100 original paintings, diagrams, and maps to give an up-to-date overview of our knowledge of the fascinating lives of animals.

Book Description

This book serves as the most successful introduction to biology published in the last 10 years, and remains the only one written and illustrated from the ground up. The “biological literacy” approach continues to be paramount—from the journalistic writing style and original, Krogh specific illustrations to the seamless integration of media A seven-part organization covers essential parts: atoms, molecules, and cells; energy and its transformation; how life goes on: genetics; life's organizing principle: evolution and the diversity of life; a bounty that feeds us all: plants; what makes the organism tick? animal anatomy and physiology; and the living world as a whole: ecology and behavior. For the promotion of biological literacy—to make individuals aware that they need it to participate in the workforce, make everyday decisions, and make informed choices at the ballot box.

4 out of 5 stars Cheaper than school bookstore.......2007-09-10

This is a required textbook for my intorductory biology class. Well laid out, easy to read. Tone is sometimes too conversational, I have to really pay attention to the facts. I saved nearly twenty dollars buying at amazon rather than at the school bookstore.

3 out of 5 stars Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section.......2005-12-13

There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.

5 out of 5 stars Biology -- A Guide to the Natural World.......2000-09-03

I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all the previous textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tables and examples are completely explained. The format asks questions and answers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbo jumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understand its meaning.

Book Description

Humans have long been captivated by birds; they have been featured prominently in art, mythology, and folklore as symbols of wisdom and truth, strength and power, beauty and death. Humans are perhaps most in awe of birds' ability to fly. Flight has enabled them to colonize virtually every habitat. Birds also display a great diversity of color and form. They are united by the possession of feathers--the defining characteristic of birds.
Many species are threatened by habitat destruction and extinction, and their survival is dependent on our appreciation and understanding and the preservation of their habitats. This beautifully illustrated book, with more than 200 magnificent color photographs and 150 original paintings, maps, and diagrams, presents an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of the natural history of birds. The authoritative text has been written by the world's leading ornithologists and includes the most recent scientific findings in a stimulating presentation.

Hardbound. The structure and content of the chapters in this volume follow those in the Second Edition of Rodd's Chemistry of Carbon Compounds, although this was completed 25 years ago! Since then, organic chemistry has moved apace and to account for this progress the relative space allocated to each chapter varies widely.

Whenever possible, it has been the editor's policy to allow individual contributors to determine the depth of coverage necessary to reflect the importance of modern trends within each chapter. Only in the case of chapter 23 was supplementation unnecessary. The main advances in the subject matter in this chapter are fully disclosed elsewhere in Volume III.
