    Book Description

A lab-on-a-chip device is a microscale laboratory on a credit-card sized glass or plastic chip with a network of microchannels, electrodes, sensors and electronic circuits.

These labs on a chip can duplicate the specialized functions as performed by their room-sized counterparts, such as clinical diagnoses, PCR and electrophoretic separation. The advantages of these labs on a chip include significant reduction in the amounts of samples and reagents, very short reaction and analysis time, high throughput and portability.

Generally, a lab-on-a-chip device must perform a number of microfluidic functions: pumping, mixing, thermal cycling/incubating, dispensing, and separating. Precise manipulation of these microfluidic processes is key to the operation and performance of labs on a chip.

The objective of this book is to provide a fundamental understanding of the interfacial electrokinetic phenomena in several key microfluidic processes, and to show how these phenomena can be utilised to control the microfluidic processes. For this purpose, this book emphasises the theoretical modelling and the numerical simulation of these electrokinetic phenomena in microfluidics. However, experimental studies of the electrokinetic microfluidic processes are also highlighted in sufficient detail.

    * THE first book which systematically reviews electrokinetic microfluidics processes for lab-on-a chip applications
    * Covers modelling and numerical simulation of the electrokinetic microfluidics processes
    * Providing information on experimental studies and details of experimental techniques, which are essential for those who are new to this field

      Description:
Microfluidics in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) devices is complex due to the large surface area to volume ratio. Thus, surface properties play an important role in flow behavior. In this paper, we summarize the effects of electric double layer and surface hydrophobicity of rectangular microchannels on time-dependent electrokinetic flow. Theoretically, we have shown that flow resistance can, in principal, be significantly reduced so that a larger flow rate can be obtained for pressure-driven flow or electric-field-driven flow. This relies on the ability to change surface charges and surface hydrophobicity independently. Our theoretical results provide guidelines for the design and operation of microfluidic flow in rectangular microchannels. Because of liquid slippage, zeta potential determination by traditional method could be overestimated. Taking into account the effect of hydrophobicity, a modified method is proposed to determine the zeta potential and slip coefficient for parallel-plate microchannels with hydrophobic surfaces.

        Description:
Electrokinetic gating, functioning as a micro-valve, has been widely employed in microfluidic chips for sample injection and flow switch. Investigating its valving performance is fundamentally vital for microfluidics and microfluidics-based chemical analysis. In this paper, electrokinetic gating valve in microchannels was evaluated using optical imaging technique. Microflow profiles at channels junction were examined, revealing that molecular diffusion played a significant role in the valving disable; which could cause analyte leakage in sample injection. Due to diffusion, the analyte crossed the interface of the analyte flow and gating flow, and then formed a cometic tail-like diffusion area at channels junction. From theoretical calculation and some experimental evidences, the size of the area was related to the diffusion coefficient and the velocity of analytes. Additionally, molecular diffusion was also believed to be another reason of sampling bias in gated injection.

          Description:
A novel microchip-based electrokinetically driven immunoassay was developed in this study. The microchip was made of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/glass using photolithography and replica molding. The immunoreaction was between the anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody and the bacterial protein antigen immobilized on the wall of the microchannel. The conditions for antigen immobilization were optimized by adjusting the plasma treatment time. By varying the concentration of blocking buffer, a buffer containing 5% (w/v) bovine serum albumin (BSA) was shown to effectively minimize non-specific binding. Rhodamine-labeled secondary antibody was employed for signal generation. The dependence of the fluorescence signal on the concentrations of both the coating antigen and the primary antibody was obtained. The detection limits for both the coating antigen and the primary antibody are 1ng/@mL. The immunoassay only took 30min when used to detect antibody. The microchips could be prepared and stored at 4^oC for at least 10 days before the immunoassay was performed. With further development on automatic control and detection strategy, this microfluidic immunoassay technique has a potential for point-of-care analysis.

            Description:
Creation of concentration gradients is important in the study of biological and chemical processes that are sensitive to concentration variations. This paper presents a simple method to generate a near-constant concentration gradient in electroosmotic flow in a converging-diverging microchannel. The mechanism is based on the enhanced diffusive mixing inside the converging-diverging microchannel section. By varying the converging-diverging geometry, the degree of diffusive mixing can be controlled. Different concentration gradients can be obtained by varying the applied electric field and microchannel's geometry. Concentration profiles with only 7% deviation over a channel length of 3mm and 3% deviation over a channel length of 1mm can be obtained for a 400@mm wide microchannel. In comparison with a simple T-shaped micromixer, the converging-diverging microchannel can produce desired concentration profiles with a much shorter mixing length (shorter by a factor of 2-3.5). A serially connected concentration gradient generator is also realized with the ability to generate two concentration gradient ranges in the same microchannel. Numerical simulations and experiments were carried out to investigate the factors that contribute to the generation of concentration gradients. The experiments were conducted in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-glass chips produced by soft-lithography rapid prototyping.

              Description:
Joule heating is present in electrokinetically driven flow and mass transport in microfluidic systems. Nowadays, there is a trend of replacing costly glass-based microfluidic systems by the disposable, cheap polymer-based microfluidic systems. Due to poor thermal conductivity of polymer materials, the thermal management of the polymer-based microfluidic systems may become a problem. In this study, numerical analysis is presented for transient temperature development due to Joule heating and its effect on the electroosmotic flow (EOF) and mass species transport in microchannels. The proposed model includes the coupling Poisson-Boltzmann (P-B) equation, the modified Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations, the conjugate energy equation, and the mass species transport equation. The results show that the time development for both the electroosmotic flow field and the Joule heating induced temperature field are less than 1s. The Joule heating induced temperature field is strongly dependent on channel size, electrolyte concentration, and applied electric field strength. The simulations reveal that the presence of the Joule heating can result in significantly different characteristics of the electroosmotic flow and electrokinetic mass transport in microchannels.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18

Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19

The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.

                    Book Description

Despite the central role anionic species have been shown to play in both mineralogical and biological processes, until now there have been no comprehensive references dealing exclusively with anionic coordination chemistry. Written by a group comprising pioneering researchers from the United States and Europe, Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions covers all theoretical and practical aspects of anion complexation, from thermodynamics and structure to catalysis and various applications. The authors begin with the 1967 discovery of halide inclusion by bicyclic diammonium receptors and trace the development of anion coordination chemistry through the most recent developments in the field. Topics covered in detail include:
                    * Pre-supramolecular anion chemistry
                    * Natural and artificial molecules that can act as anion receptors
                    * Preorganization and chemical design
                    * Structural, thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photochemical aspects of anion coordination
                    * Computer methods for receptor design and multiple host-guest relations
                    * Anion receptor catalysis and molecular recognition and transformation of nucleotides

Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions is a valuable professional resource for organic and inorganic chemists, analytical chemists, biotechnologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and environmental chemists. It also serves as an excellent graduate-level text for students of molecular recognition, catalysis, and biomimetic chemistry.

                        Book Description

This book is an introduction to coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry. It is designed primarily for a sophomore inorganic chemistry audience, but could also be used as a supplementary text for some general chemistry courses. Coordination, solid state, and descriptive inorganic chemistry are each given their own self-standing sections, so that the reader can begin in any one of them without becoming frustrated at references to previously learned material. These self-standing chapters also allow you the flexibility to present material in the order you choose.

                        1 out of 5 stars Useless Class.......2002-08-08

I will not say too much. I think it will be enough to quote from Ayn Rand's "The Voice of Reason; Essays in Objectivist Thought". The book written and the class taught by Glen Rodgers is "perceptual level history, history as nothing but a torrent of unrelated, disintegrated concretes."

1 out of 5 stars The reasons not to buy this book........1999-10-19

This is a poorly written textbook. The worst part is you have to buy the solutions manual separately and I can't find it anywhere.

                            Book Description

The role of the transition metals in biological systems is of great interest to chemists: the chemical properties of these metals often define the biological function of the proteins and systems these metals are found in. In this introductory text students are introduced to a number of topics: the transport and storage of metals: their functions is dioxygen interactions, electron transfer, and enzyme activity; the therapeutic uses of coordination compounds: and the role that small-molecule models can play in advancing our knowledge of the structure and function of transition metals contained in metallobiosites.

                              Book Description

This book addresses the chemistry of the second and third row d-block metals, assuming a knowledge of the chemistry of the first row metals. Chapter 1 looks at the metals and summarizes occurrence, physical properties and uses. Chapter 2 considers periodic trends in properties. Chapter 3 considers aqueous solution chemistry, species present (with comparisons of the first row metal ions) and redox properties. Chapter 4 surveys structure: the range of coordination numbers shown by second and third row metals is often a topic for discussion in University courses. Chapter 5 looks at electronic spectra and magnetic properties, making comparisons with the first row the main objective of the chapter. Detailed mathematical treatments are not given. Chapter 6 considers metal-metal bonding, and the classes of compound that contain triple and quadruple bonds; the role of bridging ligands is introduced. Chapter 7 looks at selected clusters with a pi donar ligands (e.g. metal halo species) in which metal-metal bonding is important. Chapter 8 introduces the area of polyoxometallates, closing with a short discussion of the wide range of applications. The book contains many references to encourage wider reading by the student; in addition to textbooks of relevance, the author has included many recent literature citations, and a section called "Metals in Action" which gives citations which show the heavier metals at work in, for example, catalytic converters and molecular wires.

                                Book Description

Applications of Graph Theory and Topology in Inorganic Cluster and Coordination Chemistry is a text-reference that provides inorganic chemists with a rudimentary knowledge of topology, graph theory, and related mathematical disciplines. The book emphasizes the application of these topics to metal clusters and coordination compounds. The book's initial chapters present background information in topology, graph theory, and group theory, explaining how these topics relate to the properties of atomic orbitals and are applied to coordination polyhedra. Subsequent chapters apply these ideas to the structure and chemical bonding in diverse types of inorganic compounds, including boron cages, metal clusters, solid state materials, metal oxide derivatives, superconductors, icosahedral phases, and carbon cages (fullerenes). The book's final chapter introduces the application of topology and graph theory for studying the dynamics of rearrangements in coordination and cluster polyhedra.
