Book Description

Dog Language tells us why dogs do what they do and how we can express ourselves so that our dogs can understand us better. It is a systematic book, ordered alphabetically with 293 entries and 94 beautiful drawings illustrating over 150 different dog expressions.

First published in Scandinavia in 1986 as Hundesprog', this book became a great success and has since then helped many thousands of dog owners, instructors, behavior students, and veterinarians to understand dogs. Now available in English, the present edition of Dog Language is an updated, highly revised and enlarged version of the original Hundesprog'.

Following the traditions of the school of ethology founded by Konrad Lorenz, Dog Language is based on many hours of research, observation, and study. Dog Language is a no-nonsense book, written in a modern, uncomplicated style—a book for all readers with interest in dogs, wolves and other canids.

`Dog Language is a book that will benefit anyone interested in what makes our dogs tick. It is a must for the professional dog handler or behaviorist, as well as any pet owner. Dog Language is well organized and written in a clear, easily understood manner. The beautiful illustrations help to explain what our canine companions are trying to communicate to us and each other. This is a rare opportunity to tap into the talent and expertise of a well known canine ethologist.' Sandy Myers (President of Narnia Pet Behavior, member of the APDT and NADOI)

`If we are to understand the domestic dog's natural behavior, we must appreciate his social heritage and the adaptive significance of his many complex behavior patterns. Roger Abrantes' book Dog Language provides this knowledge, and presents it in an easy to use and understand format. This encyclopedia of canine behavior is absolutely a must for all serious students of canine behavior and training!' Linda P. Case (Lecturer in Companion Animal Science, University of Illinois, Dept. of Animal Science)

3 out of 5 stars Canine behavior encyclopedia.......2007-08-24

A highly technical, behaviorist slanted, wordy A-Z book of behaviors. A dull read which necessitates extraction for application in dog training. Not exactly what I thought it would be - but none the less a good reference book.

1 out of 5 stars Not Satisfied.......2007-08-20

This was not at all what I thought it would be based on the description, etc. on Amazon and I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Lanny North.......2007-05-07

Excellent book for all two-leggeds. The format is encylopedic, but what seems intuitively to be a fault is really a plus. The book has become close to number one on my shelf of books directed at learning dog. Short of growing a tail, this book will yield rewards in enriched relationships with the four-leggeds.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Fostering.......2007-01-25

We are now fostering and I was curious what the dog was telling us. This is an excellent book on letting you figure out what the heck your saying.

4 out of 5 stars Dog Language: An Encyclopedia of Canine Behavior.......2007-01-12

A welcome addition to over forty books in my canine reference library.I found "Dog Language" to be a handy reference in encyclopedic format listing terms and definitions used in the study of canine ethology. Especially useful is the list of canine behavior references located in the bibliography. The cross-reference line following each entry provides extra information. As a people trainer, I found it useful for defining the buzzwords of dogspeak needed to convey concepts to dog owners. Human to Canine communication is the key element to success in training. Dog Language helps to explain the messages the dog sends us. As an active trainer of working German Shepherd Dogs, I believe this book has enhanced my ability to "read" dogs.

What a masterpiece!

I am not sure that "encyclopedia" is a good description for this book, as it is more like an dictionary of terms relating to animal behavior. Having said that, it is truly a MUST HAVE for anyone who has a real interest in animal behavior!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Breeds Ever.......2006-05-04

I love this book! It has PERFECTLY CORRECT information, and has over 3,000 breeds! From this book I figured out that my dog-what I thought was a plain mutt, then a 'miniature German shepherd dog', then a shepherd/Kelpie mix. Now I really know what my dog is: a Plains-Indian dog. This book has lots of sections, including Sighthounds (ex. Large Portuguese Podengo), Scenthounds, (ex. Limer) Short-legged Scenthounds, (ex. Kibble Hound) Flushing dogs (Russian Spaniel), Earth dogs (Shropshire terrier), Treeing dogs (American Blue Gascon Hound), Setting dogs (Llanidloes setter), Pointing dogs (German broken-coated pointer), Decoy dogs (Tumbler), Retrieving dogs (English Water Spaniel), General hunting dogs (Medelan), Fighting dogs (Cordoba Dog), Livestock guards (Dalbo dog), Sheepherders (Marled Collie), cattle herders (Smithfield Collie), deer herders (Cockhill's Finnish lapphund), llama herders (Inca dog), fish herders Fugian dog), household companion dogs (White Collie), household working dogs (Water Drawer), edible dogs (Izcuintlipotzolti) , hair dogs (Naga dog), property guards (Lyme mastiff), barge dogs (Keeshond), rescue dogs (St. Bernard), sled dogs (Aurora Husky), travois dogs (Plains-Indian dog), cart dogs (Belgian mastiff), carriage dogs (Dalmatian), truffle dogs (Truffle dog), wolf/dog hybrids (American Tundra Shepherd), feral dogs (Mongrel), obscure dogs (Sheltie-poo), and wild dogs (Golden Jackal). I give this book a five!

1 out of 5 stars prepare for a long wait.......2005-10-28

I ordered this book on August 9th, 2005 for a Sept. birthday present... and as of October 27th, had to sign off again on a delayed delivery, now for early December. If you want this one for Christmas (not holding my breath!), you may want to buy it from somebody else.

UPDATE : As of Nov. 20th with given another delay notice for a ship date the end of Dec. now... I cancelled this order & will buy it elsewhere. I suggest you do the same as this book seems to be only available thru the used-book market now.

2 out of 5 stars GREAT IDEA, POORLY EXECUTED.......2003-11-26

Desmond Morris had a great idea: produce a comprehensive encyclopedia of all known breeds, with brief descriptions and drawings instead of photos, to keep the size and cost down. Unfortunately, the result is disappointing. First, don't get excited about the "over 1000" breeds, more than twice any other similar book. Morris lists many extinct breeds, which, while interesting, make comparison to similar books misleading. Also, he lists as separate, variations of single breeds. For example, he has 14 different greyhounds! Who knew Sudan had 3 different greyhound breeds. Secondly, many of the descriptions have numerous errors...pick the breeds you're most familiar with, and you'll see. Third, the drawings are horrid. I would not have recognized some breeds that I am extremely familiar with from the drawings.
I do like his functional classification scheme. Including "edible dogs" was interesting. And it was refreshing to see a "fighting dog" category. But ultimately, the effort fails.
Wilcox and Walkowicz's Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World remains the best all breed encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive -- and Accurate -- Dictionary.......2003-05-10

Dog breed books must be a big seller -- look at all of them that are published. Rare breeds are particularly of interest to people who are looking for alternatives to what they feel are "overbred" commonly seen registered breeds. However, articles and information on such breeds are usually limited to personal accounts and sometimes questionable histories.

Desmond Morris does what no other encyclopedia or atlas of dogs has done. He has managed to give accurate accounts of some very rare dog breeds. Admirably, with recognized breeds, he has not fallen into the trap of relying on any one western/European dog club's or individual's perceptions. For example, in the case of Turkish native dog breeds he has found and cited credible Turkish sources. No small task!

The format of the book is something else I appreciate - it isn't oversized, probably because it has not included photos of the breeds (it does have line drawings).

If I had but one wish for this book - it would be to somehow include photos. But then the very reasonable price would have to be increased -- along with its current 752 pages!

An excellent read for people looking for information without a bias done by a world-renowned writer.

5 out of 5 stars Get wild with this encyclopedia set!.......2005-03-20

Released earlier this year, the Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior had to be a daunting task to put together. The three volumes provide an introductory overview on various behavior topics. I don't envy the editor (Marc Bekoff) who bravely tackled the task.

Anyone interested in animal related topics will find this three volume set useful. The up-to-date information contains contributions from many experts in a variety of fields. Entries include submissions from disciplines such as entomology, psychology, biology, veterinary medicine, behavior and others.

One major difference is that it includes dialog regarding animal emotions, awareness, consciousness and empathy. These have been taboo topics in the past.

The other nice aspect of this work is the wide range of material it introduces. Regular behavior topics such as social organization, behavior patterns, animals as individuals and species, domestic and wild animals, and other related subjects such as careers are included.

The book is user friendly with reasonably sized articles, short sidebars and provocative essays.

4 out of 5 stars ... A very strong manual on how to train doggies ..........2002-02-26

If you don't believe in physically reprimanding your dog under any circumstances ... then this is not your book ...

But if like us, you believe that perhaps, there may not be such great divide between new and older training methods, as many are wont to have us believe - and you are prepared to keep a reasonably open mind ... then give this book a try ... there is much to learn here ...

This is very much a reading book, but the writing is well done, humorous and light. The author writes convincingly in a conversational manner but without excess and remains focused on the primary purpose of the book - teaching us how to teach our doggies ...

Content-wise, the book is substantial and covers a wide range of behavioural & training topics, from (a) how to teach the basic commands, (b) how to deal with common problems, from excessive barking, jumping, biting & aggression, to (c) training the doggie for the obedience ring.

Remarkably, all the above is accomplished in a comfortable & complete manner. At no time does it seem that Mr. Terrel is dealing with or rushing the reader through any issue in a superficial manner. Nor were we left with the impression of impossible complexibility. The book is well balanced and there is always much to appreciate & consider.

Characteristically, an issue or problem is identified or discussed, the author then provides a series of possible alternative training methods, some his own, others which he has read or heard of, and may or may not have tried. Where appropriate Mr. Terrell presents his caveats and recommendations in reasonable detail, explaining how and why a particular training method might or might not work. The author explains that no one training method is suitable for all dogs.

Many training manuals simply suggests a method for training or eradicating a problem, but stops there, and does not tell us what to do, when it doesn't work! This book offers multiple options, which we find particularly useful (and we are free to choose what we think best for us & our dogs). This adds the much-appreciated dimension of flexibility.

Structurally, book is reasonably well indexed, and makes it easy for a more experienced trainer (or those wishing only to address a particular issue) to read selectively without need to plough through all the pages; adding value and making the book a good reference source.

Yes, Mr. Terrel is not adverse to 'paddling' the dog, but it must be said that the author does represent this (often most sensitive) aspect of training carefully and only advocates physical handling or reprimand within very limited boundaries & within the context of the severity of the problem faced by the trainer.

Nevertheless and while we are ourselves not particularly convinced that physical reprimand is the answer ... that does not detract from the value of the book as a whole. We take the approach that we don't have to agree with all that Mr. Terrel writes, to appreciate he has much experience, from which we can (albeit selectively) learn. Whenever physical reprimand is suggested, we substitute the physical reprimand with another form of acceptable reprimand such as low growls, withholding of attention, temporary confinement etc etc ...

    Good training manual.

1 out of 5 stars I was a little disturbed by his chapter on reprimanding.......2000-09-16

I enjoyed the introduction, but the chapter on how to reprimand left me cold. I am quite disturbed by his "paddling" suggestions. I am thoroughly against hitting dogs so I suppose I'm one of the "80%" who, in his opinion, are not firm enough with their dogs. It seemed obvious to me that after his "reprimand" the dogs obeyed because they were afraid of him. This is not the relationship I want with my animals. This book was a mistake.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2000-08-18

This book is a phenomenal collection of dog training solutions. I looked at nine other books in book stores, pet stores and online and could find nothing to compare with "Bad Dogs Need It...Good Dogs Deserve It". It truly is an encyclopedia of solutions. If you are serious about changing your dogs behavior regarding even one problem, don't bother with any book but this one. It is a masterpiece. This man clearly loves dogs and understands how they learn.

5 out of 5 stars Real life experience.......2000-08-17

I have tried many of the tips in the book and find them to be very effective. Better yet, the book is an entertaining read. Nick writes like he is talking to his best friend and his wry sense of humor comes through in every page. I have given this book to friends who didn't even have a dog! They enjoyed it too.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for all dog owners.......2000-07-26

After purveying what seems to be countless resources in the specialty of dog training and obedience, I have found exactly what I was looking for in this book. As an AKC Certified trainer, I am very pleased with both the format and steady stream of experience based solutions this book contains. Mr. Terrell clearly exhibits a solid knowledge and understanding of canine obedience and show training. While many authors simply offer re-hashed cookie cutter solutions, Mr. Terrell provides a wide variety of solutions with multiple angles to multiple canine obedience problems - a very unique approach that I have found to be quite effective in my daily dealings with the dogs and owners I am personally responsible to. I highly recommend this book to any dog owner seeking to know and understand all canines.

As a recent student in one of Irven Devore's courses, I found him to be an astute, witty, and engaging man who cared as much for his students as his research. He has the rare and admirable quality of being able to hold a roomful of football players spellbound with anthropological theory. Although we dissected the Yanomamo culture in depth, Devore hardly glorified Chagnon's study, or referred to the Yanomamo as an "inherently savage" people. In fact, he tended to be critical of Chagnon's methods and such broad cultural characterizations. As an anthropology concentrator with a primary interest in primate biology, I also feel I can safely attest that his knowledge of primates is likewise solid and I recommend his writing on them without reservation.
