    Book Description

The goal of this book is to make some underutilized but potentially very useful methods in experimental design and analysis available to ecologists, and to encourage better use of standard statistical techniques. Ecology has become more and more an experimental science in both basic and applied work, but experiments in the field and in the laboratory often present formidable statistical difficulties. Organized around providing solutions to ecological problems, this book offers ways to improve the statistical aspects of conducting manipulative ecological experiments, from setting them up to interpreting and reporting the results. An abundance of tools, including advanced approaches, are made available to ecologists in step-by-step examples, with computer code provided for common statistical packages. This is an essential how-to guide for the working ecologist and for graduate students preparing for research and teaching careers in the field of ecology.

    Book Description

Microbial ecology is one of the fastest growing fields of microbiology. This practical volume is the bench and field scientist's guide to well-established techniques for investigating microbial communities. Both for biologists just entering the field and for experienced researchers wishing to explore new areas, this book provides the theoretical background, detailed protocols, and tips from experts for working in this field. Chapters on bacteria with interesting metabolic traits are augmented with chapters on molecular techniques, lipid analysis, and appropriate sampling techniques. The final section includes up-to-date information on biofilm development and study, the science and practice of bioremediation, modeling of biological systems (including the most useful statistical parameters), and the study of phylogenetics.

5 out of 5 stars Extensive and comprehensible!.......2001-06-28

The book 'Techniques in Microbial Ecology'edited by R.S.Burlage et.al. consists of two parts. The first part describes microorganisms of different physiological groups such as nitrifiers, sulfur-oxidizers, methanotrophs, methylotrophs etc. In addition each chapter gives information about identification, cultivation and media. Not only bacteria are described, there are also chapters about fungal communities, protozoa and bacteriophages. The second part deals with environmental techniques generally applicable to environmental research. These techniques comprise sampling, enumeration, lipid analysis, isolation of nucleic acids and molecular techniques. Special topics are discussed in the third part of this book. These topics are biofilms, bioremediation, statistics, numerical classification, all important issues in environmental microbiology. Each chapter is written by a well-recognized microbiologist, such as R.S.Hanson, R. Colwell or D.White. The book is comprehensive, comprehensible and very well structured. The reference list at the end of each chapter gives valuable information for further reading. I had a lot of fun reading this book, because it contains valuable information necesssary for hands-on microbiologists. Overall, I highly recommend this book for every environmental microbiologist.

      Book Description

A collection of readily reproducible techniques for determining most of the important factors governing microorganisms and their habitats. Presented in step-by-step detail, these cutting-edge methods range from those for the study of marine organisms, to those for investigating microorganisms occurring in groundwater, to the biodiversity of yeasts found in remote environments. The novel protocols for studying fermented milks are significant for investigators concerned with milk as an item of food for infants, small children, and even adults. Additional methods for the recovery and determination of nucleic acids and other compounds affecting, and affected by, microorganisms are given for certain enzymes produced by plant pathogens and for obtaining microbial species tolerant of such inhibitors as heavy metals.

        Book Description

Clive Edwards and his distinguished panel of researchers bring together a collection of detailed molecular methods for the environmental monitoring of bacterial populations. These state-of-the-art methods include techniques for the recovery of cells, for the analysis of whole cells, and for the molecular study of target species and heterogeneous populations. Many of the methods enable bacteria to be monitored in their natural environments without culturing and specifically address the difficult problem that only a small proportion of bacteria in any ecosystem can be cultured by traditional microbiological methods. Environmental Monitoring of Bacteria takes full advantage of the exciting research in recent years that has challenged some long-held principles of traditional microbiology and gives timely and practical access to techniques that allow the study of bacterial ecology as communities, single cells, or at the molecular level.

Microbiological Quality Assurance: A Guide Towards Relevance and Reproducibility of Inocula sheds light on the difficulties of obtaining results in the test tube that will be reproducible and relevant for a wide variety of tests. This book explores the current state of research in this area and troubleshoots the problems that may be encountered in setting up appropriate cultures. The text divides naturally into three sections-growth conditions, post-growth conditions, and applications. This book serves as a valuable resource for clinical microbiologists, pharmacologists, and anyone doing in vitro experiments.

Microbial defacement and degradation of artistic or historic artifacts is a worldwide problem affecting all countries regardless of their history, geographical location, or economic conditions. This is the first comprehensive study of the role of microbial colonization on the degradation of different cultural artifacts (from buildings to books, wall paintings, textiles, sculptures and glass) and of the investigations into the compounds utilized to control microbial invasion. The book focuses on three main areas: the identification of the microorganisms which cause structural damage; methods to reduce or prevent microbial colonization and damage; and the use of microorganisms for the protection and bioremediation of cultural artifacts.

                    Book Description

Periphyton, as described in this book, refers to the entire complex of attached aquatic biota on submerged substrates, included associated non-attached organisms and detritus. Thus the periphyton community comprises bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae, zooplankton and other invertebrates.
Periphyton is important for various reasons: as a major contributor to carbon fixation and nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems; as an indicator for changes occurring in the aquatic environment; it is used to improve water quality in lakes and reservoirs; it increases food availability in aquatic
systems; it provides food for fish and shellfish; it can be used for waste water treatment.

This book provides an international review of periphyton ecology, exploitation and management. The ecology part focuses on periphyton structure and function in natural systems. The exploitation part covers its nutritive qualities and utilization by organisms, particularly in aquaculture. The final
part considers the use of periphyton for increasing aquatic production and its effects on water quality and animal health in culture systems.

                              Book Description

This compact, graduate-level text focuses on a key area of biophysical chemistry. Introduction to Macromolecular Binding Equilibria starts with a description of the features of binding sites for small molecules and then presents a discussion of the formulation of binding isotherms for simple mathematical models. The book addresses special problems of describing isotherms for linear polymers and examines the complications of binding cooperativity and thermodynamic linkage interactions among multiple ligands. Important aspects of experimental designs are highlighted along with methods for model-free analysis of data to reveal the binding isotherm. The author also covers ligand binding to planar arrays of sites.
