Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great improvement.......2001-08-24

Having written a rather scathing review of the previous edition of this guide, I thought it only appropriate that I write a review for this fantastic rewrite. My biggest problem with the previous edition was the quality of the images. However, the majority of the poor images of the previous edition have been replaced by wonderful drawings for this latest edition. There are still a few problematic pictures (such as the alligator skull with many of the sutures not drawn), but as a whole I give the new pictures 5 stars because of the extreme detail and the ease of use. The addition of repeating the most important images at the back of the book add to this books use. And, the fact that the pages are perforated, means that a student could easily put the pictures in any order that they please. Although I had been planning on changing lab texts, I now see no point as Kardong and Zalisko, 3rd ed. is the best out there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent art, very clear directions.......2001-08-16

This 3rd edition is filled with updated art that in many respects exceeds any of its competition. Further, nearly every piece of art is printed again in the back of the laboratory manual to allow the figures to be sorted and reviewed separate from the laboratory text. This feature is especially attractive to my students.

The skeletal material is well illustrated and includes detailed descriptions of turtles and alligators not addressed in other laboratory manuals. The text is succinct and clearly organized. Especially unique and useful are the numerous short boxed essays describing particular aspects of structure-function relationships and the evolution of the specific anatomy under examination.

I strongly recommend this manual as an attractive, clearly written, and thoroughly illustrated manual to support any course in comparative vertebrate anatomy. It also makes for a wonderful reference book for vertebrate biologists.

    Book Description

This high-quality laboratory manual may accompany any comparative anatomy text, but correlates directly to Kardong's Vertebrates: Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution text. This text carefully guides students through dissections and is richly illustrated. First and foremost, the basic animal architecture is presented in a clear and concise manner. This richly illustrated manual carefully guides students through dissections. Throughout the dissections, the authors pause strategically to bring the students attention to the significance of the material they have just covered.

3 out of 5 stars Falls short of excellence.......2000-08-14

I have found that there are a large number of errors in this text, particularly concerning the bowfin skull. The drawings are often sub-par and difficult to follow (particularly muscles, brains). The muscle drawings are particularly poor and it is virtually impossible to determine exactly what the lines are pointing to. Considering that the accompanying text book has some of the best drawings I have seen in a comparative anatomy text, I find the poor quality drawings particularly onerous. My students also do not like the excessive price of the book. It seems as if there is too much information for a laboratory manual with many unnecessary duplications of figures in the text book. Also, there are too many figures with added color where color in not necessary. The excessive figures and added color increase the price of this book and should be changed in future editions. This text has great potential because it is very well written, but I hope a second edition will include better, more accurate drawings and exclude unnecessary figures and information. I will probably be switching to Saul Wichnitzer's "Atlas and Dissection Guide for Comparative Anatomy" in the future because it has far better figures, and in comparative anatomy lab, the figures are by far the most important thing.

      2 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2007-08-14

This book is nothing more than a series of unaddressed topics. They talk about many possible fiberglass repair situations but never quite get around to telling you how to fix them. Confusing photos. I know as much now as before I got this book. Ask a pint dealer or some old guy at Home Depot, you'll get better information.

4 out of 5 stars Must be imaginative..........2002-12-19

I agree that this book has serious problems with pictures and photos, because the drawings included are very poor so you cannot identify the difference between the different materials. But in my particular case, people in fiberglass materials stores understood what I was looking for (by the materials and fluids names) and at that moment theory and reality matched perfectly.
The amateur results that I was expecting (car speakers, small boxes) were achieved completely.

      1 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2001-04-17

      This will be short:

Have you ever seen one of those books that looks like it will have a lot of good info on how to do something, open the cover and realize that it's just a "this is nice stuff that you could do if you knew how, but I'm not going to tell you the details of how..." book? This is that book.

To add to that, it's outdated, and even though all the products introduced and shown were of one brand, they didn't even take a picture of them but instead someone drew a picture of the can sitting there...

        Book Description

California's Zero Emission Vechile program requires automakers to offer vehicles for slae that produce no emisssions starting in 2003. This study examines the costs and emission benefits of technologies that may be used to meet program requirements, including battery-powered electric vehilces, direct hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, and gasoline hybird electric vechiles. The authors conclude California should eliminate the program, tighten emission standards on light-duty vehicles, and focus on setting emission performance performance standards.

In response to emerging epidemiological evidence of the toxicity of diesel vehicular emissions, there is growing interest in substituting conventional diesel with much cleaner natural gas in cities where ambient concentrations of particulate matter are markedly higher than what is internationally considered acceptable. This paper compares the performance of natural gas and conventional diesel buses, and outlines the barriers to the adoption of natural gas buses in developing countries. In the absence of emissions standards that effectively require natural gas, natural gas-fueled buses are unlikely to be adopted because they are more expensive to operate relative to diesel buses. The social case for replacing diesel with natural gas a fuel for buses rests on environmental grounds. If a local government decides that the reduction in air pollution associated with the substitution of conventional diesel with natural gas for use in buses is worth the cost, then it needs to adopt policies to encourage the switch to natural gas. These might include emissions standards for buses, or fuel and vehicle taxes that reflect marginal social costs. The contribution of exhaust emissions from buses to the ambient concentrations of harmful pollutants needs to be quantified so that associated health damage costs can be estimated.

              Book Description

Automobiles are a source of energy problems by causing mass consumption of fossil fuel. They also contribute to environmental problems such as atmospheric pollution and global warming. In recent years, disposal of the enormous amount of ELVs has become a major concern as well. Notwithstanding such problems, the importance of automobiles in social and economic activities is continuing to grow. Manufacturing and use of motor vehicles cannot be terminated altogether. For this reason, it has become important to plan various policies to continue producing and using automobiles while resolving car-related environmental and energy problems. This book offers a clearly defined outline of such policies in Japan. Attention has been paid to prevent it from becoming a mere listing of policies but to show the background behind such policies, the underlying principles, and examples of practical action taken in implementing policy. It may serve as a reference for all persons involved in motor vehicle industries and motor vehicle administration in Japan as well as in other countries.
