Book Description
From the one-room chapel in a prairie town to the grandiose cathedral on a city street, churches stand at the heart of the Minnesota landscape. For many, churches embody the spiritual history of their towns and neighborhoods. In Churches of Minnesota, photographer Doug Ohman and award-winning writer Jon Hassler come together to honor these magnificent architectural icons and share the stories of faith that built and now sustain these sacred spaces.
Through the seasons, Doug Ohman has traveled to every corner of Minnesota to document the beauty of the state’s most evocative church structures of present and past. Here Ohman showcases one hundred of his most exquisite interior and exterior shots with a colorful survey of a broad range of architecture.
In the “sure-handed, honest language” (New York Times) for which he is renowned, Hassler reflects on his own spirituality and his evolving faith in the church and its people. A graceful complement to Ohman’s images, Hassler’s remembrances chronicle how one’s connection with these spiritual grounds grows and changes with the milestones of life.

women's spirituality.......2002-08-09
The hidden gem in this book is how it reveals the persistance of women's spirituality as practiced by this off-shoot of Mormonism. With the dedication of the recently restored Temnple in Nauvoo Ill. It is instructive to see the parallels between orthodox mormon spirituality and that performed by the Cutlerites in Minnesota.
A little insight into standard Mormon practice informs a reading of this book.
Product Description
When he died in 1902, Henry Benjamin Whipple was one of Minnesota s best-known citizens. In his 42 years as Episcopal Bishop of Minnesota, he had overseen the development of the state s Episcopal Diocese and established two well-regarded secondary schools (Shattuck and St. Marys) and Seabury Seminary. In his denomination, he was a force for conciliation and mission.
But he was most famous as a champion of the rights of Native Americans. Although his advocacy of assimilating native peoples into the majority culture is now challenged, in his time he was a major voice in bringing the plight of Native Americans onto the international stage. An outgoing, charismatic figure, Whipple was ninety percent St. John and ten percent New York politician, a charming blend of evangelist and shrewd businessman whose friends ran the gamut from presidents to backwoodsmen. His simple sincerity and beautiful, powerful voice made him a popular speaker and persuasive fund-raiser.
Anne Beiser Allen traces Whipple s origins in upstate New York, his election as Minnesota s first Episcopal Bishop and his growing influence in the fields of religious affairs, education and Indian policy. Her carefully documented research helps to bring this complex figure into clearer focus.

The quartets helped spread the temperance message and encouraged the development of youth work. The history, with photos of most of the quartets, covers years from the late 1800s to the 1960s. As the quartets traveled the country their mission was to bear witness to Christ and the Gospel. Included is a CD of the 1953 quartet. This book is a treasure for those who seek inspiration from the activities of youth, those interested in development of small college traditions, and those interested in history.
Included inside the back cover is a CD of the 1953 quartet.

great resource for the military figure modeler.......2006-02-01
The current edition is a major revision of the original book, and includes detailed information on painting with oils as well as acrylic paints. Most techniques are well illustrated with good quality closeup photographs, which really helps to walk you through the steps.
How to Paint Realistic Military Figures.......2005-07-07
This book was exactly what I was looking for. I'm fairly fussy when it comes to my hobbies, and will only invest in something that I know is good.
It has lots of step-by-step photos and techniques explained in detail.
The authors are very experienced and do excellent jobs of conveying their many years of experience.
I highly recommend this book if you're interested in painting figures. Novice to experienced painters will not be disappointed, it's definitely a keeper that will be used many times as reference in the future.
A Very Good Primer for Painting with Acrylics!.......2005-04-19
Actually, I haven't seen the new edition of this book; only the original. The techniques of using acrylics for figure painting are explained very clearly and the photos are very good. Each stage of achieving the final result is shown. BEST OF ALL: The authors of this book do good work, so you know THEY know what they're talking about! Beware of another book on painting figures with acrylics...this was the first I've seen and is still light years ahead of the 'other'.
Book Description
Painting miniatures, though a relatively small sector, is one of the most widespread hobbies throughout the world. The modellers and painters prefer mainly military figures and model vehicles, closely followed by fantasy figures. However, painting female figures presents an alternative to these, taking second place among the preferences of many painters, perhaps due to a lack of knowledge or the difficulty it presents. From now on and thanks to this publication, all this is history.
When painting a female figure, one should simply be familiar with the appropriate techniques in order to obtain the picturesque effects that portray finesse, avoiding sharp lights and shadows used on military figures. Airbrush techniques, almost always feared by the majority of painters, provide really surprising finishes that can later be applied to other types of tasks.
The sensuality, glamour and eroticism that occasionally accompany female figures cannot be forgotten, making this publication an essential guide for overcoming the fear of this type of figure painting that can provide great satisfaction once the pieces are finished. This is undoubtedly a new style that breaks away from traditional techniques that are repeated in conventional figure painting.
The publication is designed in a very visual way, accompanying the reader with brief and concise explanations on the use of different techniques, illustrative step-by-step processes. The examples described include how to paint figures ranging from 30mm fantasy miniatures to large scale figures, as well as specific techniques for simulating skin, hair, lips and everything that comprises the female figure as a whole, in which sensuality is a key factor.

Female Figures.......2007-01-13
I purchased this for my husband for Christmas. He paints figure models and female figure models are one of the hardest to do, according to him. Lots of shading, etc. He was very happy to receive this as a gift. The edges were damaged when we got it, wrote to Amazon and returned it. We wanted a replacement. The replacement came a couple of days later before they received the damaged one back. I trust Amazon and their products. AMAZON is awesome.

Excellent for both beginner and advanced painter.......1999-04-10
Terrific book for learning how to paint miniatures (great step-by-step instructions with illustrations,) and also learning the interesting history of the medium. Although I myself am a long-time artist of miniatures, I picked up a lot of tips and tricks.

Suggestion a good surce.......2006-03-26

Exquisite images from a civilization ignored by the West.......2002-01-24
Mention the words "Safavi" or "Safavid" to people in the West and you will most likely get a blank stare in return, but this Iranian dynasty presided over a great cultural flowering in literature and architecture as well as in art. Stuart Cary Welch produced a beautiful introductory guide to some of the beauties of that era, taking illustrations from several famous books and collections of the 16th century height of Safavid glory. While the political history of the time in Iran, Central Asia and Afghanistan (all parts of the Persian world in a cultural sense) was full of battles, massacres, sieges and sudden changes of rule-very much like Europe at the same time-the delicacy of Persian art knew no bounds. Brilliant, jewel-like colors, striking designs, and bold displays of mythical heroes touched in gold and surrounded with the miniature figures of the Persian court world appear on the pages of this book that is guaranteed to satisfy. Chinese-style rocks and trees mingle with Islamic calligraphy and Persian legends. While this book reproduces the illustrations both in full and in detail, the text is only the slightest of introductions to what can be a consuming study for any lover of art at its greatest. Buyers of this book will want to look further. May I suggest Anthony Welch's two books "Artists for the Shah" and "Shah `Abbas and the Arts of Isfahan", "Persian Drawings" by B. W. Robinson, and "Persian Painting" by Basil Gray. Another related volume, a treat for anyone interested in Persian art, would be "Isfahan: Pearl of Persia" by Wilfred Blunt and W. Swan.
Beautiful, accessible introduction to an exquisite artform.......1999-03-08
Stuart Cary Welch is an art historian (I think he taught at Harvard, but I'm not sure) who loves his work, and it clearly shows in this volume. The pictures are exquisite, the reproductions are beautiful, but the best part is the commentary: his only goal is to make the work -- and the stories the pictures tell, for they are all essentially book illustrations -- as much a pleasure to the audience as it was to him. He could not wear his learning more lightly nor with more enthusism, and yet it is clear he must know everything there is to know about this culture. Right after you get this, you'll immediately go right back to Amazon to get a copy of the Shah-Nama, the marvelous epic Iranian poem that so many of the splendid miniatures in this volume illustrate.

Bravo Jacqueline Penney!.......2002-06-05
Thank you Jacqueline Penney for making my introduction to watercolor painting fun, informative and very helpful.
The book, Painting Greeting Cards in Watercolor, was a step by step introduction to watercolor painting through the practice of greeting card design. The lessons were fun, quick and very easy to follow, making the student beg to beging the next lesson. After every lesson I felt like I really learned something and was proud of my accomplishment. I'll be honest, as a first time watercolorist I would have given up if this book wasn't easy, fun and easy to understand. Luckily it was a superb introduction and I am very happy.
Thank you again.
Perfect for little ditties.......2001-11-23
I really enjoy using this book for inspiration and practice. I don't use her ideas for greeting cards, but for small paintings. Most of the paintings can be finished rather quickly. The topics are appealing and I have sold a number of them. I like her 3-in-1 compositions, dividing the paper with masking tape and having related subjects treated differently within each block. It is a practical and user-friendly book, well worth the purchase.
Excellent step-by-step instruction.......1999-02-09
I have painted all the pictures in Jacqueline's book. Her detailed instructions make copying her art miniatures easy. Her instructions apply not only to miniatures but also larger sized pictures. I have used several of her designs for greeting cards.
