This book is about the Byzantine monuments of Istanbul, most notably, Haghia Sophia. The remains of the land and sea walls, the Hippodrome, imperial palaces, commemorative columns, reservoirs and cisterns, an aqueduct, a triumphal archway, a fortified port, and twenty churches are also described in chronological order in the context of their times. These "monuments" are viewed in relationship to the political, religious, social, economic, intellectual and artistic developments of the Byzantine dynasties.

Great book on the Byzantine remains of Istanbul. Beginning with a topographical analysis of the Greek city, it takes you through the structures chronologically, so you can see what remains from which time periods. Floor plans are useful as well, although surprisingly little was done to upgrade them for this high quality book. Also suffered a bit from insufficient photography - needed more photos and less technical text.
A Comprehensive Gazetteer of Istanbul's Byzantine Survivals.......2004-09-27
For co-author John Freely, at least, this book represents a summing-up of everything he's learned in more than 30 years of tramping around Istanbul and studying its Byzantine monuments. Assisted by Ahmet S. Cakmak, a professor of Civil Engineering at Princeton and a specialist on the Haghia Sophia, he has produced a comprehensive gazetteer of Istanbul's remaining Byzantine survivals that should gratify the hearts of both academic specialists and of non-professional Byzantium buffs. The book obviously belongs in academic libraries, but it should also find a place in general circulation libraries that want to ensure thorough coverage for both actual and armchair travelers of a city that is an increasingly popular tourist destination.
Over the past five decades, the remaining Byzantine monuments in Istanbul have begun, one-by-one, to struggle back from years of indifference and neglect. Freely and Cakmak do an inestimable service by providing a comprehensive survey of the skeletal remains of the Byzantine city. Even the most obscure Byzantine sites are catalogued, and not merely that - all of them are also illustrated with at least two photographs or nineteenth-century lithographs and frequently a site plan as well. In all, the book includes 51 color photographs in full-page plates and 162 building plans and black-and-white illustrations - mostly photographs, but also including 19th century lithographs where (as with St. John of Studion) the condition of the structure has declined significantly over the last 100 years.
The chapters are arranged chronologically, and each chapter begins with a historical overview that will be useful for the layperson. Haghia Sophia, not surprisingly, receives comprehensive coverage - almost 40 pages of text, 17 plans and black-and-white illustrations, and 8 in color. (If you review this book before leaving for Istanbul, you will have no excuse for missing anything of substance in Justinian's great church.) Monuments in the second rank like the Church of SS. Sergius & Bacchus or the Kariye Camii are also well-covered, with 7 pages on each.
But the book really shines in its treatment of the most obscure (and often precarious) Byzantine survivals. The Kefili Mescidi, which may (or may not) be the refectory of the monastery of Manuel, rates two photographs and one plan, as does another church known as the Manastir Mescidi. A ruined church called the Sinan Pasa Mescidi also rates two photographs, and Freely and Cakmak cover the Isa Kapi Mescidi, even though they report that it consists of merely "two walls of a Byzantine church and the wreck of a medrese by Sinan." And if you've ever wanted to get the skinny on the Atik Mustafa Pasa Camii (Church of SS. Peter & Mark), or the walls that Nicephorus II Phocas erected around the core of the imperial palace complex, or the Palaces of Antiochus and Lausus near the Hippodrome, then this is the book for you.
There's also coverage of a few well-known and important monuments that no longer survive or do so only in fragments or foundations, like the Baths of Zeuxippos, the Church of Anicia Juliana, the Church of the Holy Apostles, and the Hippodrome itself. And the chapter on pre-Constantinian Byzantium fleshes out what is known about the city of Septimius Severus.
This book is expensive, but there are reasons for that. It is printed on very high-quality paper, in part so that the dazzling color photographs will appear to full advantage. Save your pennies, if you must, but this is definitely a book every lover of Byzantium will want to acquire.

Built from 532 to 537 as the Cathedral of Constantinople, Hagia Sophia was little studied and seldom recognized as a great monument of world art until the nineteenth century, and Nelson examines the causes and consequences of the building's newly elevated status during that time. He chronicles the grand dome's modern history through a vibrant cast of characters—emperors, sultans, critics, poets, archaeologists, architects, philanthropists, and religious congregations—some of whom spent years studying it, others never visiting the building. But as Nelson shows, they all had a hand in the recreation of Hagia Sophia as a modern architectural icon. By many means and for its own purposes, the West has conceptually transformed Hagia Sophia into the international symbol that it is today.
While other books have covered the architectural history of the structure, this is the first study to address its status as a modern monument. With his narrative of the building's rebirth, Nelson captures its importance for the diverse communities that shape and find meaning in Hagia Sophia. His book will resonate with cultural, architectural, and art historians as well as with those seeking to acquaint themselves with the modern life of an inspired and inspiring building.

A close reading.......2005-11-01
My one criticism of this book - reprinters take note! - is that it does not have a separate bibliography, only endnotes. This, in a book of 250-odd pages of scholarly writing, is completely irritating. But overall it has a wide appeal, in my opinion - I am interested in the history of photography, and his chapter 4 "Making a Picturesque Monument" has one of the most perceptive analyses I've read on the role of photographs in shaping views of a building and a place into a canonical view.

This is such a well designed book. A must for all decorative painters who love florals. The spiral bound book gives ease of use and reference. This artist really delivers with the information, content, illustrations, directions. Its so refreshing to buy a book that actually delivers what it adverises!! So glad I picked this one up. I've taken a break from decorative paining for a few years and miss it so am starting up again but am rusty from the absence. I selected this book and also Maureen McNaugton's Brushstroke Handbook: Ultimate guide.... It too is well worth buying. The latter is a brushstroke content but the illustrations and also directions plus color suggestions (as in Laure Paillex's too) are great at getting started. Both can be combined to make beautiful stilllife bouquets. And for the quick version I also added Donna Dewberry's Flowers from A to Z and am happy with that choice as well. Enjoy.

Strokework Flowers is truly a step by step guide to making beautiful painted flowers. Ms. Clark takes a traditional multi-load technique and updates it to current styles. The Pansies and other flowers are colorful and will fit in any decor. The instructions are clearly photographed and worded so that anyone even familiar with painting could have a finished project in a short amount of time. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in this type of multi-load technique. I would even recomend this book to those that are looking to learn new ways to paint but have never had experience with multi-load before because Ms. Clark's instructions are very easy to follow.
Ms. Clark even adds additional information on the Chemtek techniques, showing how to add metal finishes and patinas to any project- including paper, wood etc.
Overall rating is Excellent, a definite - "Have to have book"

Strokework Flowers is definitely a great book for those who have ever been afraid to try this method of decorative painting.
Don't be fooled by this book's cover, it's so much better than you would believe! The cover is a bit drab compared to the color inside this book.
Clear, colorful photographs fill this book and are followed with well written captions, brush care information, correct hand positions and movement, surface preparation instructions, strokework theory, paint blending, the patterns and information on antiquing.
Margot Clark has created a book that all painters will find can help them be successful in completing the 7 projects she's included as well as a reference for future paiting projects you may work on.
This is a great book for the value, and I really believe anyone could learn to paint with this method considering the high well written and photographed book!

Definitely a must have reference book for the artist wishing to learn to master multi loaded strokework. The drawings and diagrams are very excellent. The photography is great allowing the reader to view the hand/brush position for every stroke. Margot's written instructions leave nothing to guess. She has taken clean, modern color combinations and given the reader an excellent choice of subject material to practice and learn with. Additional information is giving on beautiful, easily executed faux finishes and trim work. Not only a great learning/reference book, but a good source of inspiration for artists who paint to sell! A 'MUST HAVE' addition to the shelves of any tolepainter's library! The instructions are comprehensive and the clarity of illustrations made it a snap to follow along.
