Book Description
The advent of tropical medicine was a direct consequence of European and American imperialism, when military personnel, colonial administrators, businessmen, and settlers encountered a new set of diseases endemic to the tropics. Professor Farley describes how governments and organizations in Britain, the British colonies, the United States, Central and South America, South Africa, China, and the World Health Organization faced one particular tropical disease, bilharzia or schistosomiasis. Bilharzia is caused by a species of blood vessel-inhabiting parasitic worms and today afflicts over 200 million people in seventy-four countries. Author Farley demonstrates that British and American imperial policies and attitudes largely determined the nature of tropical medicine. Western medical practitioners defined the type of medical system that was imposed on the indigenous populations; they dictated which diseases were important and worthy of study, which diseases were to be controlled, and which control methods were to be used. Historians, historians of medicine, parasitologists, and experts in tropical medicine will find this a fascinating study.
Customer Reviews:
Quite good introduction to the history of imperial medicine........1998-09-02
Farley's book is a really enjoyable one. It is well structured and clearly set even for readers with no special medical background. He only rarely goes into details of microbiology or other, not strctly historcal field. It is a really well balanced piece of work. I especially enjoyed it since it gave a rather broad introduction to imperial medicine which cannot always be found in works dealing with the history of certain tropical illnesses (eg. Harrison's Malaria). The slight problem I had was perhaps that in some cases the overview of the medical historical background became a real overview while in other cases it seemed a lot more professional, a lot broader. I can recommend it for historians of the period especially that I have found no review of the book in related journals (eg. Journal of African History).

Book Description
The first half of this book is primarily a systematic survey of the snails, beginning with glossaries, keys for identification to genera and a checklist of species. This is followed by a synopsis of species, with brief notes on ecology, distribution and parasites. Relationships are then described between snails and schistosomes and with other parasites. The book goes on to consider the factors affecting snail populations and possible methods for population control.

Book Description
The past decade has seen huge advances in the application of microscopy in all areas of science. This welcome development in microscopy has been paralleled by an expansion of the vocabulary of technical terms used in microscopy: terms have been coined for new instruments and techniques and, as microscopes reach even higher resolution, the use of terms that relate to the optical and physical principles underpinning microscopy is now commonplace.
The
Dictionary of Microscopy was compiled to meet this challenge and provides concise definitions of over 2,500 terms used in the fields of light microscopy, electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, x-ray microscopy and related techniques. Written by Dr Julian P. Heath, Editor of Microscopy and Analysis (http://www.microscopy-analysis.com), the dictionary is intended to provide easy navigation through the microscopy terminology and to be a first point of reference for definitions of new and established terms.
The
Dictionary of Microscopy is an essential, accessible resource for:
- students who are new to the field and are learning about microscopes
- equipment purchasers who want an explanation of the terms used in manufacturers' literature
- scientists who are considering using a new microscopical technique
- experienced microscopists as an aide mémoire or quick source of reference
- librarians, the press and marketing personnel who require definitions for technical reports.
Customer Reviews:
The Briefest (and Worst) Chem Book out there.......2004-10-10
I am in 11th grade Honor Chem class and we are currently using this Heath Chem book. When I browsed through this text, I realized that the author as a holder of a PhD degree and from such a respectable university, Purdue, should have done a much much better job at explaining the topic. Also, this text is really old, 11 years old. During that time, a lot of advances in chemistry have been made, such as discovering new medicines and adding a few elements to the Periodic Table. Second, this text is designed more for elementary level than an honors chemistry course, because every high school student should perfectly know the metric system and how to find slope on a graph, for example. Finally, this text is much too brief for an honors class. Most chemistry texts are over a 1000 pages long, not counting the appendices and answers in the back. But this book has a total of 840 pages INCLUDING the appendices, answers, and index.
MY ADVICE IS: IF YOUR SCHOOL USES THIS BOOK, COMPLAIN TO YOUR PRINCIPAL AND TALK HIM/HER INTO INVESTING INTO A BETTER CHEMISTRY TEXT.

fast service and product in good condition. thank you very mych
straitfoward but very tedious to read.......2001-08-22
My 11th grade chemistry honors class used this book. We really didn't have to read from it unless it was absolutely necessary. I can appreciate why. The text is very tedious to read and sometimes it gives an incomplete explaination in my opinion. there have got to be better books out there. I am thankful that we had a good teacher or I wouldn't have done well in the class.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Chemistry book..........2006-05-11
I used this book for two first-year inorganic chemistry courses when taking my engineering degree. This book has lots of examples, as well as explaining concepts quite clearly. There's no difficult math in this book; it's all algebra, and a few logarithms for things like pH calculation, so it would be good for people without a strong math background.
Lackluster Text.......2005-05-17
I am an IB Chemistry SL student this year (junior in high school) and this is the text provided as a backbone for the learning of the class. Upon consulting the book numerous times for further understanding of concepts introduced in class, I was disappointed to repeatedly find nothing extremely helpful.
The book focuses on inserting interesting pictures and large diagrams rather than actually explaining concepts thoroughly. The example problems given to reinforce the student's learning are ridiculously simple and do not represent the level of learning expected of an International Baccalaureate Chemistry student. Chemistry is my favorite subject and the concepts are easily comprehensible for me. However, my learning this year can be attributed to my teacher's lectures and my own interest and drive to research the principles on the internet or in my dad's college chem books. I asked my teacher what she thought of it and she expressed similar dissatisfaction, saying that had the school more money, we would have a much better chem book.
Overall, the book is an insufficient tertiary source that should not be relied on for in-depth learning of the complexities of Chemistry.
A notch above .......2005-04-21
I was first introduced to Steven S. Zumdahl's various chemistry books in HS as a Jr. At the time I had no frame of reference to make a comparison. Later as I went to college, actually had Dr. Zumdahl as a professor and was introduced to physics and biology text books, the brilliance of Zumdahl's book became evident. After undergrad and through four years of Pharmacy school I still find myself looking back and referencing this text. The book is invaluable in its fundamental explanations of acid base, solvents/solutions, gas exchange, and molecular chemistry. These concepts are critical in the life-science and medical fields and tend to be glossed over in upper level biology and pharmacotherapy courses.
Great introductory Chemistry text........2004-08-13
I took an AP Chemistry class online, which meant a lot of self-studying. This was the second textbook I purchased for the class, after being unsatisfied by my first textbook. I did not have to buy another book after this one! The writing and explainations in the book are very clear, and I can think of very little that was left desired.
It is true that a few things could have been explained more thoroughly, but as an introductory text it is understandable that some topics were just lightly covered.
Great for AP Chem.......2004-06-06
I used this book in my high school, junior year AP Chemistry class and I felt I learned a ton. I think it was extremely easy to read, yet time consuming. It will require a lot of effort, but I think the end results are worth it.

Book Description
A key area in the search for an understanding of how the normal cell cycle goes out of control, the study of growth factor function is perhaps the most rapidly changing field in mammalian biology. This excellent introduction provides a comprehensive report of the current knowledge in this area. Explaining the historical roots of growth factor research, it leads on to a more detailed consideration of the biochemistry of growth factors, their receptors and intracellular signalling pathways. The book provides an excellent preparation for further venture into more specialized areas.

growth factors: a growing field.......2000-06-10
This book by John Heath provides an extremely useful, eye-friendly approach to the vast and fascinating field of growth factors. It is of great value for both junior and senior residents, because within a few easy-to-read chapters, browses through the most basic aspects. It starts with a simple review of the cell cycle. Then it goes through the very basic issues: what are growth factors, their receptors and the nuclear response. It is a must for anybody willing to get started in this topic. The format is very comfortable (handbag size).
