    Book Description

The new edition of a bestseller, Water Flows in Soils bridges the fields of soil physics-where descriptions of water flow tend to be microscopic- and hydrology - where they tend to be macroscopic. This work conveys the fundamental concepts of water flow in soils with clear and essentially nonmathematical explanations. The author elegantly elucidates the basic and advanced principles of water movement in soils. More than 750 figures, tables, and equations provide a concrete image of the water flow phenomena in soils. Tightly focused and packed with examples, the book is a practical resource for graduate students of agriculture and environmental engineering, and researchers in soil physics.

      Book Description

There are three types of rockigneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Sedimentary rocks form from the weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition of older rocks. Applied Sedimentology describes the formation, transportation and deposition of sediment, and the post-depositional processes that change soft sediment into sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks include sandstones, limestones and mudstones. All the world's coal, most of its water and fossil fuels, and many mineral deposits occur in sedimentary rocks. Applied Sedimentology shows how the study of sediments aids the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons.

      * Completely revised edition; Like its precursor, it describes sediments from sand grains to sedimentary basins; Features up-to date account and critique of sequence and cyclostratigraphy
      * Extensively illustrated with photos and remotely sensed sea bed images describing sedimentary processes, products and depositional systems; Color plates illustrate sediment textures, lithologies, pore types, diagenetic textures, and carbonate and clastic sequence stratigraphic models
      * Emphasises the applications of sedimentology to the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons
      * Extensive references and up-to-date bibliography for further study

        Book Description

In the ten years since the publication of Modern Soil Microbiology, the study of soil microbiology has significantly changed, both in the understanding of the diversity and function of soil microbial communities and in research methods. Ideal for students in a variety of disciplines, this second edition provides a cutting-edge examination of a fascinating discipline that encompasses ecology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, and makes use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The chapters cover topics ranging from the fundamental to the applied, and describe the use of advanced methods that have provided a great thrust to the discipline of soil microbiology. Using the latest molecular analyses, they integrate principles of soil microbiology with novel insights into the physiology of soil microorganisms. The authors discuss the soil and rhizosphere as habitats for microorganisms, then go on to describe the different microbial groups, their adaptive responses, and their respective processes in interactive and functional terms. The book highlights a range of applied aspects of soil microbiology, including the nature of disease-suppressive soils, the use of biological control agents, biopesticides and bioremediation agents, and the need for correct statistics and experimentation in the analyses of the data obtained from soil systems.

Although the photographs in the paperback version are black and white, this well-written book is a worthwhile purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Amazingly Poor Figures.......2007-01-24

This book is well written, covers a wide breadth of information well, and is a valuable reference. It is also has clear, interesting writing. That said, the quality of the typeface, and especially the figures, is so incredibly poor as to render the book painful to read. I can hardly belive how badly executed a modern (1995, 2nd Ed.) volume by a large publisher (Prentice Hall) can be.

4 out of 5 stars Engineering Geology An Environmental Approach.......2001-05-17

A very good book for introductory engineering geology. The author presents the information in an easy to read and understand format. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors use of actual situations and incidents to help the reader understand the concepts, applications and importance of the subject material. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest of attaining a basic understanding of engineering geology.

              Book Description

Soils are one of the world's most important resources, and their protection, maintenance, and improvement is critical to the continuance of life on earth. Soil Fertility, Second Edition, offers thorough coverage of the fertility, composition, properties, and management of soils. This book carries on the tradition of excellence established by authors Henry Foth and Boyd Ellis, leading soil scientists whose previous books in this field have become multi-edition classics. The Second Edition of Soil Fertility has been significantly expanded to include more information on mineralogy, while keeping the thorough coverage of essential topics. The book presents soils as dynamic, constantly changing bodies, and relates soil fertility and management to the mineralogy of their origin. Four new chapters offer updated information on soil charge properties, ion adsorption, exchange and fixation, and soil reaction. There is also a far greater emphasis on environmental issues, reflecting the increasing importance of environmental concerns to agronomists and soil scientists today.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-06-07

Great book. Even if you do not have any backround in soil science or geology this book is easily readable, though a scientific mind is essential. As well as its suitability for the novice this book represents an essential reference text for the undergraduate/graduate/doctoral student as it goes into considerable depth. The book does, however skim over the biogeochemistry of micronutrients with only 1 chapter devoted to them. So if its in depth information on these that you are looking for I would suggest you look else where. Apart from that, this book is easily reccomendable.

                  Book Description

The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum provides a comprehensive, fundamental account of the aqueous chemistry of aluminum within an environmental context. An excellent reference for environmental chemists and scientific administrators of environmental programs, this book contains material reflecting the many recent changes in this rapidly developing discipline. The first three chapters discuss the most fundamental aspects of aluminum chemistry: its quantitation in soils and natural waters, including speciation measurements, and its stable chemical forms, both as a dissolved solute and in a solid phase. These chapters emphasize both critical assessments of and definitive recommendations for laboratory methodologies and measured thermodynamic properties relating to aluminum chemistry. The next four chapters in The Environmental Chemistry of Aluminum build on this foundation to provide details of the polymeric chemistry of aluminum: its polynuclear and colloidal hydrolytic species in aqueous solution, its complexes with natural organic ligands, including humic substances, and its role as an adsorptive and adsorbent in surface reactions. These chapters are grounded in experimental results rather than conceptual modeling. The final three chapters describe the chemistry of aluminum in soils, waters, and watersheds. These chapters illustrate the problems of spatial and temporal variability, metastability, and scale that continue to make aluminum geochemistry one of the great challenges in modern environmental science.

                    Book Description

This volume gives a broad synthesis of the current knowledge and understanding of the plasma physics behind the aurora. The aurora is not only one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on Earth, but the underlying physical processes are expected to be ubiquitous in the plasma universe. Recognizing the enormous progress made over the last decade) through in situ and groundbased measurements as well as theoretical modelling, it seemed timely to write the first comprehensive and integrated book on the subject. Recent advances concern the clarification of the nature of the acceleration process of the electrons that are responsible for the visible aurora, the recognition of the fundamental role of the large-scale current systems in organizing the auroral morphology, and of the interplay between particles and electromagnetic fields.
