Book Description
Many industrialized and developing countries are faced with the assessment of potential risks associated with contaminated land. A variety of human activities have left their impacts on soils in the form of elevated and locally high concentrations of potential toxicants. In several cases sources have not yet been stopped and contamination continues. Decisions on the management of contaminated sites and on the regulation of chemicals in the terrestrial environment require information on the extent to which toxicants adversely affect the life support function of soils. Ecological insights into the soil as an ecosystem may support such decisions. This book reviews the latest ecological principles that should be considered in this respect.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive examination of all aspects of the ecotoxicology of soil organisms. The book explains how contaminants reach the soil, traces their transport through the soil, and then moves on to examine the effects of contaminants on different groups of soil organisms (e.g., microorganisms, micro- and mesofauna, larger soil animals including vertebrates). The book also considers food chain transfer and discusses risk assessment procedures that are specific to soil conditions. Ecotoxicology of Soil Organisms is the only book to take such a sweeping approach toward soil ecotoxicology.

Book Description
The first atomic bombs were constructed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where lab workers disposed of waste plutonium in nearby canyons leading to the Rio Grande. Today, the environmental consequences are just beginning to be understood as scientists examine the effects created by past mishandling of one of the most toxic chemical wastes known. Written in an engaging, accessible style, Plutonium and the Rio Grande is the first book to offer a complete exploration of this environmental history. It includes an explanation of what plutonium is, how much of it was released by the Los Alamos workers, and how much entered the river system directly from waste disposal and indirectly, as a result of atomic bomb fallout. The book includes extensive appendices, maps, diagrams, and photographs. Environmental managers, ecologists, hydrologists and other river specialists, as well as concerned general readers will find the book readable and informative.

Book Description
Soils are receptacles for a wide range of hazardous chemicals generated by human activities. Whether or not this contamination is deliberate, accurate toxicity assessments are important for health and economic reasons. Soil Ecotoxicology discusses the sources, fate, and transport of hazardous chemicals in soils. The fate (biodegradation and modeling) and the potential impacts of pesticides on soil ecosystems are emphasized, and methodologies for performing toxicity assessments are provided.

Product Description
The authors review the key features of trace elements in soils, plants and the food web on which human beings survive. Currently, the quality of food is highlighted and has become a subject of broad studies of various disciplines. Minor inorganic constituents of food, trace elements, are of special interest due to their specific properties in both abiotic and biotic environmental compartments. Hence, there is a need for comprehensive information on the distribution of trace elements in given environmnetal compartments and organisms.
The authors' intention is to summarize up-to date interdisciplinary data for the concise presentation of our understanding of trace-element transfer in the chain from soil to man. Geochemical processes and information on international legislation on trace elements as both micronutrients and contaminants in soil and food are presented in parallel and are related to ecology and health risk assessments.

Description:
There is increasing environmental concern about the impact of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on ecosystem sustainability and human health. Many EDCs are present within wastes which are routinely spread to land (e.g. biosolids). The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour and fate of the EDC, 4-nonylphenol (NP), in a range of soils and to assess the potential risk it may pose to soil and freshwaters environments. We showed that NP was not persistent in soil, that NP mineralization was concentration-dependent and was stimulated by the addition of organic residues (e.g. biosolids, glucose, dead roots) but not by the presence of a rhizosphere. NP had no negative effect on soil respiration or plant growth unless present at extreme concentrations (>=10,000mgNPkg^-^1) and the uptake of NP by plants was very low. While NP was sorbed to the solid phase it could easily be leached from soil. Taking all of our results together, we conclude that the spreading of NP contaminated waste soil to soil probably poses a very low environmental risk to freshwater ecosystems and human health.

Description:
The term 'critical body residue' (CBR) was defined as the lowest observed total body concentration of a contaminant in an organism, which is associated with the occurrence of adverse toxic effects in either individuals or populations of a defined age or stage of development. In this study, internal toxicity thresholds were determined for copper in the clitellated adult stage of earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus and Aporrectodea caliginosa). The objective was to assess the applicability of CBRs as a practical tool in soil quality assessment of contaminated sites and as a means of a sustainable protection of earthworm fauna. Laboratory studies showed that body concentrations of Cu were generally in agreement with the chemically available CaCl"2-extractable fraction in soil, but that there was also some evidence of internal pH-related homeostatic regulation. Toxicological correlates of body Cu concentrations with adverse effects on cocoon production (fecundity) suggested an approximate sublethal internal threshold of about 40mgkg^-^1, with mortality occurring at about 60mgkg^-^1. Adult L. rubellus sampled from areas with a wide range of metal pollution showed body Cu concentrations with a minimum of 8mgkg^-^1 and a maximum of 60mgkg^-^1. Beyond this apparent physiological tolerance range, environmental management directed at optimal earthworm population survival may not be sustainable in contaminated fields. Studies of L. rubellus colonizing a metal-contaminated experimental sludge-treated field showed that a reduced rate of colonization can already be associated with an average body Cu concentration of 25mgkg^-^1. However, in this particular field situation mixture effects of other metals that were also present in the soil and the occurrence of avoidance behaviour during colonization may have contributed to this low internal toxicity threshold. It is concluded that the CBR approach seems to be a feasible option for use as a tool in a bioavailability-based soil quality assessment, even for essential trace metals like copper, but that further insight may be needed to establish the uncertainty and reliability of the application in environmental quality assessment and decision making.

Description:
An acute Biotic Ligand Model (BLM) was developed to predict the effect of cobalt on the survival of the potworm Enchytraeus albidus, exposed in nutrient solutions added to acid washed, precombusted sand. The extent to which Ca^2^+, Mg^2^+ and Na^+ ions and pH independently mitigate cobalt toxicity to E. albidus was examined. Higher activities of Ca^2^+, Mg^2^+ and H^+ linearly increased the 14dLC50"C"o"^"2"^"+ (LC50 expressed as Co^2^+-activity) whereas Na^+-activity did not. Stability constants for the binding of Co^2^+, Ca^2^+, Mg^2^+ and H^+ to the biotic ligand (BL) were derived, i.e. logK"C"o"B"L=5.13, logK"C"a"B"L=3.83, logK"M"g"B"L=3.95 and logK"H"B"L=6.53. It was calculated that at Co-concentrations corresponding to the 14d-LC50 value, 32% of the BL sites were occupied by cobalt. An initial validation of the applicability of this BLM in true soil exposure systems was performed by comparing observed and model-predicted 14d LC50s in a standard artificial soil and a standard field soil. By assuming pore water to be the only route of exposure and assuming equilibrium between pore water Co^2^+ and solid phase Co, which is predicted by the geochemical WHAM-Model 6, LC50s (as mg Co kg^-^1 dry wt of soil) were predicted within an error of less than a factor two. Further validation in true soil exposures, combined with more detailed knowledge of Co binding to soil solid phases is needed, if this model is to be used as a tool for risk assessment and derivation of soil quality criteria for Co.

excellent.......2006-08-08
My 16 year old just finished this book for homeschool biology. It was comprehensive, thorough, yet easy for her to follow. The illustrations are excellent and prolific. It had quizes she could take to track her progress. I highly recommmend this book for high school biology.
wonderful book.......2005-08-16
I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology.

Book Description
Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled media. BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW, BASICS Edition (no physiology coverage) her most concise text, provides a precise, issues-oriented approach and "solves" some of the toughest course challenges: engaging students, linking concepts from chapter to chapter, easily monitoring students' progress and simplifying lecture prep. Show students how biology matters: opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter: since students have a difficult time linking concepts, the authors created a new "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another. Monitor students' progress with ease: BiologyNow offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor grade book (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn on TurningPoint content and software. Enjoy easier lecture prep: The new PowerLecture tool integrates all electronic chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links, bulleted text slides, and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources?arranged by chapter section?is at your fingertips.

Customer Reviews:
Made an A in A&P.......2007-08-13
I think my instructor had a lot to do with it, as well as some changes in study habits since I went to college the first time (2.68). But this book definitely helped. I had a 96 average in class. It's not an easy read, nor is something to try to do without some class notes, but I thought it was clear and informative.
Human Anatomy.......2007-07-25
This book was purchased for a high-school course.
Class hasn't started yet so can't rate the book
properly. I presume that it is good because the
school chose it.
Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology 8th edition.......2007-01-21
This book was necessary for my class. Its good, except I can't get the disk to work.
good condition-- a bit long for delivery.......2006-11-04
the delivery was a bit slow but the book was in perfect condition.
Nice and Well Organized Book. .......2005-08-10
I had this book for about two semesters, in college by the way. The first semester I dropped it and finally the second semester I got a B. Interesting hm? Anyhow, the book contains a large amount of information including very nice diagrams and photographs and has vastly improved in my opinion from the early first few editions. What makes this book extremely informative is the fact that it is pretty well organized and set up including indexing and clear contents listing. 16 chapters starting slowly from the basics of the human body, its relations to chemistry, cells and tissues, and finally going more in depth by digging deep into the organ systems and the human anatomy.
The diagrams are clearly listed, but of course I've seen a few errors. The information is just so much. Unless you are crazy about this, I doubt you'll remember much without reviewing it over and over continuously on a weekly if not daily bases. Almost each part in the diagram is listed out on the same page or a few pages back and forth to give the reader a more precise knowledge if the reader intends to know more of what the diagram/photo represents part for part.
The information is simply mind blowing and pretty exhausting to remember. Most readers of this and other anatomy/medical/etc related books would sooner or later ask themselves "who the heck would make up all these silly names and expect us to memorize it?!" The information is a little too compact for me and this is the only problem I have with this book, the simple fact that its a lot to comprehend and doesn't seem very intended in my Physiology and Anatomy basics class. Like always, mix other text books with this one if you intend to get everything out of this subject. No one book is perfect. Otherwise, its a decent book overall.
