Couldn't Put It Down!.......2007-09-21
Highly recommend this book to anyone who raises horses, dreams of raising horses, is involved with horse races, or just wants a good read. Mr Pons gives an elegant account of life at Country Life - detailing the pleasures and the trials of daily life on a thoroughbred breeding farm in MD. My only complaint is that the book finally ended as I had become so caught up in the happenings at the farm.
wake up .......2006-04-20
d wayne lukas has taken a personal matter and written a awful review of this book. it is a wonderful book!!! i have spent years on a throughbred farm working side by side with owners and trainers, this book is about the coperation of all the folks that work on the farm., it is true as can be. the book goes way beyond just life on a throughbred farm and adds poetry and wonderful visual of what the farm looks like and how the family works togeather to bring new foals into the world, to hopefully go on to win races and keep the farm in the black. shame on mr lukas.!!!!!!! the book is enchanting!!!!!
What a load!.......2004-11-01
The reality of Country Life Farm is that Josh Pons spends the bulk of his time belittling employees, griping about horse owners, and bemoaning the miseries of the equine industry in an ever-increasing cycle of meaningless activity. His use of the metaphor is as sloppy as that of his work on the lunge-line, his run-on sentences as exhausting as the round-pen endeavors he whips his Thoroughbreds to accomplish. He is as good a writer as he is a horseman--don't waste your money on this one.
How do you stop a horse from committing suicide?.......1999-10-13
This thoughtful diary recounts the daily trials and tribulations of raising delicate creatures in a too modern world that cares more about horse power than horse flesh. Although I came to the book as a horse lover, I left with a deep appreciation of the agricultural history of Maryland, the need to fight against suburban sprawl, and the many challenges in the never easy game of Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing. The account of Rollaids, just one of the many horses Josh Pons saves from suicide, provides narrative strength to a book that you can read straight through -- or pick and choose daily entries according to season and mood. Now I use the internet to follow the "family" successes -- of Citidancer, Allen's Prospect and Carnivaly, the author's tempermental princes of speed.
A must for any horse racing fan!.......1998-11-23
Country Life Diary gives a several year account of life on a thoroughbred horse breeding farm. You share the highs and lows, the tears and smiles of each and every foal that is born and the hopes and dreams of making it to the biggest race - The Kentucky Derby.

Book Description
The setting is Zimbabwe. In a move instigated by Mugabe, the author, Richard Wiles, tells of the violence and terror which accompanied the seizures of farms owned by white farmers. He relates his own harrowing experiences when his farm is invaded by brutish thugs, who proceed to terrify his farm workers, disrupt his farming operations, and threaten him with death if he does not comply with their demands.
Richard Wiles has established a woodland nature reserve on his property which the government has proclaimed a Protected Forest. As an avid environmentalist, it is his passionate love and concern. He is determined that the government should no rescind on the legal status which it has enshrined on the forest. Likewise, he will fight by every legal means to keep his home of 40 years, 33 of which he has shared with his wife, Beth, who lies in her grave in a quiet clearing of the wildlife sanctuary.
The action begins in 2000. It was then that Mugabe recalled the guerillas who had helped him to power in 1980. He put them on the payroll and sent them onto farms to act as "political protesters". They were known throughout Zimbabwe as Warvets. It was a group of these Warvets who came onto the author's farm and set up their base in the farm village. From that moment they played havoc with ordered life. It was then too that Richard Wiles began writing a diary. This became the basis of the present book.
Within the pages he tells of the diabolical nature of the Warvets and the maddening ambivalence of the police and ministerial officials. Unending stress and frustration will move him to dispair. Withal, when writing up his diary, his innate sense of humour will often break the surface.

Customer Reviews:
A unique, captivating story from Oysterville's past.......2007-09-19
"Dear Medora" is unlike any other memoir, journal, diary, or correspondence collection I've read. What makes it special is that it allows us to look at life in the early 1900s through a "real-time" mother-daughter relationship. I love this book. I savored it, reading a chapter every day while quietly enjoying my first cup of coffee of the morning. I bought several copies of Dear Medora and gave them to friends and family members. My sister's reaction to the book was similar to mine--as she read it, she didn't want it to end. We both became emotionally attached to Oysterville. And we both became quite captivated by Medora's charms. My sister, who's about to become the grandma of a baby girl, actually crusaded for her kids to name their baby "Medora."
Letters from the past.......2007-09-01
When Harry A. ("Papa") and Helen R. ("Mama") Espy returned to the family home in Oysterville on the north end of Washington's North Beach peninsula in 1902, their eldest daughter, Medora, was 3 1/2 years old. As the family grew, traveling throughout western Washington and Oregon for business, politics, or schooling become commonplace for family members, but Medora and Mama kept in touch through a lively and loving correspondence that lasted until tragedy struck the family in 1916. The Espys carefully preserved Medora's and Mama's letters, and Medora's niece, Sydney Stevens, has incorporated them into a wonderful book that not only documents the history of an area and an era, but allows us a glimpse into the deep emotional attachment between mother and daughter. Beautifully illustrated with vintage photographs, "Dear Medora" is a treat for the eye as well as sustenance for the heart and mind.
Fascinating, rewarding, highly recommended reading.......2007-07-09
Medora Espy was the eldest daughter of Washinton State senator and dairy farmer Harry Albert Espy. She grew up in the quaint, somewhat remote, coastal village of Oysterville. "Dear Medora: Child Of Oysterville's Forgotten Years" is a collection of letters Medora wrote and received from 1902 to 1916 (as well as personal diary entrees) -- until a devastating tragedy occurred soon after her 17th birthday. Compiled and organized by Sydney Stevens (the daughter of Medora's youngest sister, Dale), "Dear Medora" is profusely illustrated with historical photographs and illustrations. This body of lively correspondence opens a 'window' into an American yesteryear through the life and observations of a sensitive young woman. "Dear Medora" is fascinating, rewarding, highly recommended reading and a welcome addition to American Regional History & Biography reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Book Description
Estimating abundance of wildlife is an essential component of a wildlife research program, and a prerequisite for sound management. With the exception of a few highly mathematical volumes, there are no books on the subject for use by students and field workers. Also, the various techniques for counting animals found in scientific journals are often not accessible to African managers. The unavailability of the diverse literature necessitated the production of a textbook or field manual that covers the ground. The book compiles the most relevant techniques for counting African mammals, illustrated with many examples from the field. It provides guidelines for selecting the appropriate methodology for a range of conditions commonly found in the field, in terms of different animal species, habitat types, and management objectives.

Book Description
This book introduces the suite of techniques known as 'distance sampling', so-called because the common theme is the sampling of distances of objects from a line or point. The objects are usually animals or groups of animals ('clusters'), and the primary aim is to estimate their density or abundance in a survey area. In line transect sampling, the sampled distances are the shortest or perpendicular distance from a detected object to the line. It is the most widely used method for assessing the abundance of a wide range of terrestrial and marine animals. In point transect sampling, distances of detected objects from the sampled points are recorded. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to both techniques, and also describes several related techniques. 'Introduction to Distance Sampling' updates the 1993 book 'Distance Sampling', which was the first, and until now, only book devoted to the topic. The book is aimed at quantitative biologists and wildlife managers, and statisticians involved in wildlife monitoring programmes. Of particular significance in this update is the chapter on study design and field methods, which has been extensively rewritten and extended. New technologies such as laser range finders, theodolites and the Geographical Positioning System (GPS) are discussed, and advice is given on a wide range of survey methods. Analysis methods have also been generalized, through the use of various types of multiplier. Many exercises have been introduced, to make the book more useful to graduate students in wildlife and conservation management.

Introduction to Distance Sampling : Estimating Abundance of Biological Populations .......2006-02-25
This was a very pleasant experience. The book was delivered ahead of schedule. Thanks!
Excellent resource for biologists.......2002-04-28
This book explains the methods of distance sampling, which is a statistical procedure for estimating the abundance and density of biological populations. This book outlines the statistical procedures, assumptions, and philosophy of distance sampling, and gives good advice for survey protocol and design.
Book Description
This is the first book to provide an accessible comprehensive introduction to wildlife population assessment methods. It uses a new approach that makes the full range of methods accessible in a way that has not previously been possible. Traditionally, newcomers to the field have had to face the daunting prospect of grasping new concepts for almost every one of the many methods. In contrast, this book uses a single conceptual (and statistical) framework for all the methods. This makes understanding the apparently different methods easier because each can be seen to be a special case of the general framework. The approach provides a natural bridge between simple methods and recently developed methods. It also links closed population methods quite naturally with open population methods. The book is accompanied by free software on the web, in the form of an R library, allowing readers to get some "hands-on" experience with the methods and how they perform in different contexts - without the considerable effort and expense required to do this in the real world. It also provides a tool for teaching the methods, including a means for teachers to generate examples and exercises customised to the needs of their students. As the first truly up-to-date and introductory text in the field, this book should become a standard reference for students and professionals in the fields of statistics, biology and ecology.
Customer Reviews:
Distance sampling.......2001-11-20
This book is a very good start for begainer readers into the field of wildlife population assessment. Though it proceeds further into advanced topics regarding both theory and practice. The book provides step-wise introduction into the theory behind a well established method for population assessment that is widely used among ecologists. Examples and applications are provided. The figures are well chosen and illustrated. Although being simple in context some basic knowledge of statiscs is an assesst while reading this book. The book is edited in a way to provide a sort of comprehensive manual of a DISTANCE software package used for estimating wildlife population from sighting surveys.
