5 out of 5 stars This book should be in every school and household........1998-08-12

The agriculture industry in North America has been badly misunderstood for many years by Government officials and consumers alike. "The Land That Feeds Us" sets out to correct that grievance and does so very well, with numerous farmers' stories from the major agricultural sectors. Hart's prose is colorful enough to engage the casual young reader and has insights to spare for the professional. This book should generate new (and overdue) respect for the farmer and reform of the systems involved in the production of food and cash crops.

Book Description

The growth, reproduction and geographical distribution of plants are profoundly influenced by their physiological ecology: the interaction with the surrounding physical, chemical and biological environments. This textbook is notable in emphasizing that the mechanisms underlying plant physiological ecology can be found at the levels of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and whole-plant physiology. At the same time, the integrative power of physiological ecology is well-suited to assess the costs, benefits and consequences of modifying plants for human needs, and to evaluate the role of plants in ecosystems. Plant Physiological Ecology begins with the primary processes of carbon metabolism and transport, plant-water relations, and energy balance. After considering individual leaves and whole plants, these physiological processes are then scaled up to the level of the canopy. Subsequent chapters discuss mineral nutrition and the ways in which plants cope with nutrient-deficient or toxic soils. The book then looks at patterns of growth and allocation, life-history traits, and interactions between plants and other organisms. Later chapters deal with traits that affect decomposition of plant material and with plant physiological ecology at the level of ecosystems and global environmental processes. Plant Physiological Ecology features numerous boxed entries that provide extended discussions of selected issues, a glossary, and numerous references to the primary and review literature. The significant new text is suitable for use in plant ecology courses, as well as classes ranging from plant physiology to plant molecular biology.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2004-06-11

I use this book as a starting point on specific topics in plant physiology & ecophysiology from the plant cell to plant global communities. Indeed, it is not an intro course in plant physiology and very broad but I would recommend this book for graduate students, it is helpful.

3 out of 5 stars A complex book - not for the beginner.......2000-10-11

This book covers a lot of ground, beginning with photosynthesis, plant-water relations, and plant energy balances before discussing ecological aspects of plant physiology. While it follows a logical progression from the cell to the ecosystem scale, the book is very difficult to read. The authors try to cover too much material in the book, omitting basic material in order to broaden the focus of the book. Therefore, it is definitely not for those who are looking for a basic book in either plant physiology or plant ecology. As a textbook, it is difficult for undergraduate students to understand, and seems to be geared towards graduate students and those already familiar with the field.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, readable, authoritative........2005-09-23

If you are interested in physiological ecology or plant ecology, get this book. I am using it for a graduate class and finding it a rewarding read. Larcher is able to combine both a breadth of knowledge and an ability to communicate these thoughts in a logical and simple manner. I should probably also thank the translator.

5 out of 5 stars Walter made it easy and exciting !!.......2003-12-12

I have seen reference of it in several publications and decided to put my hands on it. It's surely is a must for any terrestrial ecosystem scientists or ecologists. I would say, Walter's book is really just so exciting to read. Detailed in a lucid way with excellent sketches. Terrestrial ecology is also included by taking into account major world species. Easy to read and interlink with nicely sequenced sections and chapters. However, those specializing in tree physiology, Taiz's book may be better.

    Book Description

For decades, researchers have been interested in the structure, function and inhabitants of forest canopies, but unfortunately, a large portion of this fascinating ecosystem was inaccessible. Recently, with the use of balloons, dirigibles, cranes, towers, suspended catwalks, and a variety of modern climbing equipment, scientists have begun to penetrate this dense foliage, allowing for a detailed, authoritative account of this enchanting world. Forest Canopies synthesizes the newly compiled data on canopy-dwelling organisms, including insects and other arthropods, lizards, birds, mammals, and, of course, the plants that both form and inhabit this unique aerial ecosystem.

    Key Features
    * Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
    * First synthesis of research into this previously unchartered forest region
    * Details innovative techniques for the study of the canopy
    * Describes the structure, function, and biodiversity of canopy ecosystems
    * Ideal reading for botanists, naturalists, ecologists, and zoologists, or anyone interested in preserving the beauty of these great forests

    5 out of 5 stars A great canopy primer!.......2002-02-22

One of best synopsis of the current to near current canopy research topics, struggles, and future agendas! Lowman and Nadkarni continue to out do themselves with this suberbly edited book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in forest ecology and forest canopies who aren't afraid to look at some graphs. You'll learn something....

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, Intriguing, and Well researched.......2000-06-26

I recently used this book for an indepedent study on Canopy Ecology and found it abosutley indispensible. Lowman and Nadkarni used the work of such big name scientists as Nigel Stork and Terry Erwin to assemble an array of canopy topics including access, structure, nutrient cycling, species compossition, epihyte and hemiephyte ecology, and even ethnobotany. Each chapter is clear cut and informative and the book does not waste space with cheesy fru-fru. Of particular interest to the aspiring canopy researcher is the suggestions for new avenues of research given at the end of almost every chapter.

              Book Description

As the global climate changes, there are concomitant changes in global biological productivity. This book is devoted to the assessment of terrestrial Net Primary Productivity ("the total amount of energy acquired by green plants during photosynthesis, minus the energy lost through respiration"--APDS&T, pp. 1457). The book is comprised of three major sections. The first section is a review of the processes that operate globally to influence productivity--these are the initial conditions of any model of primary productivity. The second section is comprised of chapters that assess the contribution of particular ecosystems to global productivity. The final major section contains chapters of a synthetic nature that describe attempts to model global productivity. This book should appeal to both ecologists and environmental scientists.
