    Book Description

    Farmers all over the world have to decide what to produce and how to go about it. In the tropics, small farmers have to work with a limited resource-base which usually does not lead itself to highly productive systems of consistent crop and animal production. Yet those people who live in developing tropical countries should be concerned that their farmers do produce more from the limited resources with which they have to work. The principles of farm management economics and the applications of the tools and techniques of farm management analysis and planning can help small farmers in tropics to produce ‘a bit more’ from their lot. For the benefit of teachers and students of agriculture, farm extension advisors and agricultural planners and managers, this book sets out the principles and practices of farm management economics on small holdings in the tropics in a clear, simple, useful and usable way.

          4 out of 5 stars Good book -- not a pleasure reader! This takes time. .......2007-05-23

          This book is very good; even though, I found it best used as a supplement. Personally, I used several items for Biology. With that said, this book does well and serves its place nicely. It's better than many texts, but if you're a visual or spatial learner, you'll want to supplement with interactive materials, DVD's, etc.

          This book is fairly entertaining once you understand the language; however, it's not a pleasure reader. Don't expect to breeze through it in a few hours. It's very comprehensive covering topics from both Biology 1 and Biology 2.

          My favorite chapter was Ecology -- ironic, considering it's the last chapter. Most disliked chapter? Chapter 3: Specialized Cell Structure and Function. I actually found Chapters 2 and 3 the hardest to complete in the entire book. Once you sludge through those, it becomes fairly entertaining. Maybe that's just because I didn't have a biology (or science in general) background first.

          5 out of 5 stars wonder Book, wonderful Value.......2006-05-28

          I liked the format of this book.
          It helped me with my college biology I and II classes.
          My favorite sections were evolution and ecology of course.
          I feel like such a nerd studying so much.
          Then again this book was quite needed along with
          Patrick Leonardi's "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations"
          This comes in three volumes with a lot of practice questions
          which I tested myself before my actual college bio tests.

          Good Luck!

          Of course one has to be predisposed to an interest in this topic, but if you saw David Attenbourrough's recent Blue Planet Series you will come away with a similar impression but a much more in-depth knowledge of the subject. As a former oceanography student I can say that this book is aimed at readers of all levels of knowledge. They make a potentially dry topic (no pun meant) quite interesting. The chapters consist of describiing estuaries in the land-sea ecotome to the barren and alien quality of the abyssal plain. Marine flora and fauna are featured prominently. I recommend this for anyone with a casual interest and greater. Looks good on a bookshelf also!

          This book is packed with infomation and I found this book very useful.

          In its introduction, the author explains briefly on why vitamins and minerals are so important for us to stay alive. Throughout the book there are plenty of charts, including many that list good food sources for the various vitamins, minerals, and other supplements. The book also gives tips on how to get the most from your foods and supplememnts, how to avoid problems like overdoses or bad interactions with other drugs or supplements. It also includes a sidebar with a duck character letting you know what supplements don't work or what to avoid because it dosen't work.

          5 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to read, informative and fun book on vitamins.......2001-10-04

          This book is very helpful if you are interested vitamins. I knew a decent amount before reading this book, but learned a lot more. It'll tell you what the max dosages are, the dangers of overdosing on certain ones, what each vitamin does and the myths surrounding some of the vitamins, minerals etc. Cancer runs in my family, so I'm looking to avoid that problem. I learned that soy products inhibit breast cancer. More importantly (since I don't like soy products) I found out that I can find soy tablets at the store! A lot of really good information in this book, and as I said, it's extremely easy to read. I read it within a few days

          5 out of 5 stars A big thank you to the authors.......2001-06-28

          The book helped me to make an informed decision about what vitamin supplements to buy suitable for my personal circumstances. Took me just 4 hours of reading. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to get too bogged down in this vitamin stuff, but just wants a quick overview of how all these vitamins can help you be more healthy.

          5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Nutrition.......2000-08-02

          Anyone interested in learning about nutritional supplements should read this book!

          It covers all of the basics about supplements, why we need them, and what benefits they can provide us with for optimum health. You'll see all of the popular vitamins, minerals, herbs and antioxidants and a whole lot more.

          I strongly recommend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vitamins and Minerals" to anyone that has wanted to learn more about supplements, but didn't know where to find reliable information.

          This book helped me to get seriously involved in the nutritional supplement field, and I make sure that I keep a copy of it readily available at all times!

          3 out of 5 stars Should have talked to an anthropologist.......2002-05-30

          In a quick scan of this book, it seems Mr. Horvitz has done a somewhat reasonable job of explaining the history of evolutionary theory, and the basic concepts of evolution, however, the two chapters on human evolution (19 & 20)leave much to be desired. There are discrepencies and incorrect data throughout both chapters, some of which should have been quickly caught by an editor, while others appear to be from bad data sources. For example, on page 212 the author mentions the author of the book "Lucy" as Donald Johanson, yet 2 pages later he mistakingly calls the man who discovered Lucy "David Johanson". Other basic errors include defining an ape as "simply a monkey without a tail", and calling the Bonobo, which is a species of chimpanzee (and therefore an ape), a monkey. These are basic pieces of data which would have been caught had any biological anthropologist read the chapter before it was published. The discussion of the fossil evidence for human evolution is stunted and inaccurate. Each section of the chapters seems to give different dates for the same events and species, and some species are skipped over, while others are mislabeled (Ardipithicus ramidus is listed as an Australopithicine on the summary of hominid species/timeline, and A. anamensis isn't even listed). It seems like each topic of human evolution discussed in the book was researched independantly, and so each section appears disjointed from the rest. There are numerous other problems with the data, yet there are no references to other books or articles where the information came from, so I can not say if these are problems with bad data sources, or how they occured. If you are interested in understanding human evolution, this is absolutely not the book you should look at. It states certain ideas as absolute, when they are minority opinions, and states other ideas as suspicious, when they are in fact commonly accepted. Rather, I would suggest something like Roger Lewin's book "The origin of modern humans". For a basic introduction to evolutionary theory, this is alright, but that's about all

          3 out of 5 stars Preachy.......2002-04-10

          The author spends the majority of her book telling us why evolutionary theory is right and creationism is wrong. That preachiness gets annoying after a while for someone who just picked up the book to learn more about the theory.

          1 out of 5 stars A poorly organized book with twisted logic.......2002-02-14

          One reason that I bought the book is that I want to know why evolution is so "misunderstood". Mr. Horvitz/Kher, the author, explained the reason why on Page 5:

          "For one thing, people suspect that evolution is too complicated to grasp without spending years plowing though impenetrable books. And because teachers tend to shy away from teaching the subject, if only to avoid upsetting parents, school boards, and religious organizations, many people never learned much, if anything, about it. In addition, most Americans aren't scientifically literate. According to a worldwide poll, Americans ranked twenty-first among industrialized nations on their knowledge of evolution!"

          Their logic is that if you don't know much evolution, you are not scientifically literate. I still cannot understand why evolution is so misunderstood after reading the book, instead I have such an impression that evolution is correctly understood by most Americans and they choose not to believe it.

          Another reason for me to read the book is that I want to know the basic principals of evolution. Mr.Horvitz/Kher said on Page 5 that the definition of evolution in Webster's Dictionary is not accurate. What he suggested concerning the definition is "very complex creatures can evolve from other very complex creatures to form new species." That implies a tiger can evolve from a turkey. Please prove it and show me the evidence, Mr. Horvitz/Kher.

          The title of Page 10 is "Evolution is Observable, but You Might not Like What You See", I do want to see the fact that one specie is being evolved from another nowadays, but I can not find the proof or experimental report from this book, for example one kind of species' gene can be changed to another species' gene and form a new species. There is no such a thing in the book! Instead the book is full of theories and new ideas that don't have experimental results to support.

          In the book's Forward written by Kher, he said "the book is not really for idiots ..." which is not quite consistent to the Book's title "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Evolution".

          5 out of 5 stars The complete idiot's guide to evolution...need we say more?.......2001-12-01

          Leslie Horvitz does an excellent job of breaking up the subject matter of evolution into digestible parts that all flow well together into a complete and accurate whole.

          Well-versed in learning psychology and effective presentation, the Idiot Guides have been serving all flavors of literacy, well, for many years. The guides promote an understanding of the subject matter and an interest to dig deeper.

          Evolution, though seemingly a simple concept, can easily be misunderstood. As anyone who has attended a creationist debate will tell you, it is also a subject that is continually abused and misrepresented. It can often be difficult for a layperson to sort through the intricacies of evolutionary theory while simultaneously grasping the larger picture that continues to be developed and improved upon by competent scientists. It's easy to become muddled in the details when trying to understand the complex mechanisms of genetic mutation, natural selection and other sophisticated concepts that can be found within the realms of life on earth. Many people are intimidated by the level of understanding that is required to articulate the subject coherently - not to mention passing that information on to others so they too can understand the complexities of biological change through time.

          The Complete Idiot's Guide to Evolution provides a worthy introduction to the discoveries that have been made within the evolutionary sciences over the past two centuries. Along with a historical perspective and a glimpse into modern-day controversy and the absurdity that is creationism, we find ourselves able to forge ahead, more knowledgeable - less confused.

          We are left with a greater appreciation for science and the reality it has afforded our minds to contemplate.

          1 out of 5 stars How did this book make it past the editor's desk????.......2006-12-26

          Shame on the Macmillian publishing company for letting this book get past the editor's desk and into print. It is obvious that The Complete Idiot's Guide to Life Science was NOT written by someone with expertise in biology. I know she does not have a degree in biology, and I assume that when she took a biology class in high school, she failed it.

          No one with even high school knowledge of biology could have written what she did about proteins synthesis on page 64:

          "Plants use photosynthesis, but animals use protein synthesis to create energy necessary to sustain life,"

          To make such an outright mistake about two such important cellular processes is evidence that she does not know biology. It is also evidence of extremely sloppy work of the editors at Macmillian.

          1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere.......2003-04-02

          Too many misleading statements in this book for me. I'd recommend that you avoid this book, and instead go to your nearest college bookstore and purchase a biology text intended for the freshman biology overview course.

          Here's a snippet from page 18:
          ==
          "By about 4.6 billion years ago, the cloud had flattened out into a hot, dense, slowly rotating disc. Within this giant disc of raw material, concentrations of elements and energy developed. Our own sun was one of these "concentrations," and it was right in the middle. For the next 10 billion years, thermonuclear reactions within the concentration of materials kept the sun's development going until it finally became the sun as we see it today."
          ==
          Do the math. 4.6 billion years ago + 10 billion years = 5.4 billion years in the future.

          From pages 22 and 23:
          ==
          "The earth's oceans and it's [sic] oldest rocks formed about 3.9 billion years ago.
          ...
          For 3.9 billion years, there was no life; then for 3.5 billion years, there was life."
          ==
          Do the math again. DuTemple is implying the earth 7.4 billion years old. This doesn't match other sources (see ask.com, and ignore the creationism entries), which suggest the solar system is about 4.5-4.6 billion years old.

          Here's a misleading snippet from page 180:
          ==
          "Water contains oxygen; it's not called H2O for nothing. That "O" stands for oxygen. If we humans tried to obtain our oxygen from water, we'd die, but other animals are able to live by getting their entire oxygen supply from water."
          ==
          It's misleading, in that it's implying that animals are cracking water to get oxygen, instead of obtaining oxygen that is dissolved in the water.

          There are too many misleading statements on too many pages for my taste, and I would not recommend this book.

          5 out of 5 stars appreciated this book.......2003-01-01

          i did not realize that this book would contain such a wealth of information. the title is misleading, because the contents include very extensive scholarly research , written in easily understandable and entertaining prose.
          You are shown a huge trove of information regarding sharks, the various types, their feeding habits, how they mate, where they travel,where to see them underwater, popular myths, how to fish for them, the dangers and pleasures of diving etc etc
          I recommend this book to those who have any curiosity about sharks. You can learn the real facts, and a vast amount of information-in fact,sibly more than you ever wanted to know.
          The only thing missing is recipes.
