Book Description
"This will be a book to be proud of!"—Ruud Lubbers
· First book on the Earth Charter
· World famous authors
· Available in English and Spanish
· Large, full-color book
The Earth Charter is an inspiring declaration of shared ethical principles. It arises from diverse sources--the wisdom of indigenous peoples, international law, contemporary science, and philosophical and faith traditions. It is an integrated vision of caring for all life, of universal human rights, of economic justice, and of the creation of a culture of peace. The Earth Charter in Action is a collection of over seventy thematic and descriptive essays inspired by Earth Charter, and demonstrating the rich diversity of its uses. It points toward the many possibilities of future utilization, including its ability to bridge the Islamic and Christian worlds and to work across the divide between the northern and southern hemispheres.
Well-known contributors include Homero Aridjis, A. T. Ariyaratne, Leonardo Boff, Kamla Chowdhry, Jane Goodall, Yolanda Kakabadse, Ruud Lubbers, Federico Mayor, Steven C. Rockefeller, and Erna Witoelar. Contributors are practitioners, experts, and Earth Charter activists from around the world. There is a special emphasis on contributions from youth. Includes an afterword by Princess Basma Bint Talal and 75 full-color illustrations.
This book is published in cooperation with Earth Charter International, Costa Rica, and the NCDO, The Netherlands.
Customer Reviews:
The U.N. Global Agreement For Peace, Prosperity, and Sustainability.......2007-01-06
For many years now I have been wondering what an agreement on international cooperation that all nations could readily agree to would be comprised of. With the publication of The Earth Charter In Action, my musing is over. The Earth Charter is simple yet succinct; it is profound and compelling. The first paragraph from the PREAMBLE sets the tone:
"We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the people of Earth, declare our responsibly to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations."
The Earth Charter book has the entire Earth Charter document interspersed with commentaries from it's many contributors such as: Wangari Maathai, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jane Goodall, Peter Blaze Corcoran, et al. The Earth Charter website also has the entire Earth Charter in a viewable and downloadable format. There is a large and growing body of world-wide endorsers at the website and the list includes almost every country along with an impressive and varied list of NGOs, schools, business, religious groups, and individuals.
The Earth Charter will hopefully be the document that brings every person on Earth together for a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future with a knowledge of our interconnectedness and interdependence not only amongst ourselves, but with all other life forms on Earth. My heartfelt thanks to the many contributors world-wide for this beautiful document!
Book Description
PATRONAGE OR PARTNERSHIP brings a new perspective to the subject of building local capacities in emergency and post-emergency situations. Many relief programs remain characterized by externality: in their funding, accountabilities, approach to management, and dependence upon expatriate staff. Strengthening local capacity is easier said than done, and there are real tradoffs between outsiders doing something in the midst of an emergency, on the one hand, and building longer-term local skills, on the other. By critically examining the dilemma from local -erspectives in case studies from Mozambique, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Haiti and Guatemala, this book finds real hope and possibilites amidst the prevailing rhetoric and confusions.

Book Description
The term "capacity building" refers to enabling the indigenous people of developing countries to carry out development processes successfully by empowering them through strengthened domestic institutions, provision of domestic markets, and improvement of local government efforts to sustain infrastructures, social institutions, and commercial institutions. Capacity building also involves the need to recognize indigenous interest groups, encourage local efforts, provide incentives for privatization, and coordinate local, regional, and international strategies to enhance productivity and wise use of natural and human resources. Most important, capacity building encourages a "bottom-up" or grassroots effort for sustainable development. The grassroots effort begins with the family unit. Capacity building addresses all areas of social, economic and health, and environmental processes through a holistic approach. The chapters of this book, written by experts in their fields, address these three areas of the developing societies.
Book Description
Much has been written about capacity building but little on how to use financial management to build capacity. Donors are increasingly requiring their non-profit beneficiaries to have sound financial systems before they will provide funds. This guide provides an overview of financial management and the practical tools that can help build the financial capacity of non-profit organizations.
Using case studies to demonstrate good practice, this guide will offer practical advice in how to work with a partner organization to build its financial capacity. It will also detail tools and techniques for using financial skills to improve organizational and program management.
The guide is intended for managers and trustees of non-profit organizations, providing tools and techniques for them to build their own financial system, and for those assessing another organization’s financial capacity.

Book Description
After more than a decade of participatory initiatives in development in China, this volume provides a source of information on the key issues, constraints and capacity building necessary to implement participatory approaches in China today.
The book outlines the institutional change necessary for participatory processes to be adopted and become meaningful in poor villages, and for project achievements to be taken up on a larger scale in rural China. The case studies are by principal Chinese academics and practitioners and cover forestry, natural resource management, rural development, irrigation and poverty alleviation.
Like Municipalities and Community Participation (2000) and Focusing Partnerships (2002), the book is about strengthening local government as a key player in the development of participatory initiatives. It will be invaluable for donors and development practitioners seeking to understand the opportunities and constraints for participation in China, for those academics and trainers involved in the capacity building process and for students of development in the unique context of China.

Book Description
Aquatic Invertebrate Cell Culture is a very new field which has major applications in Aquaculture, Ecotoxicology and Pathology. In essence it is realised that pathogens behave differently in host cells than the impression gained from growth on agar plates. Another major application of invertebrate cell culture is an understanding of mechanisms involved in cellular and molecular responses to environmental change. This book aims to consider all relevant advances for the development of aquatic invertebrate cell culture.

Book Description
Prion diseases, also known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), exist in both humans (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)) and animals (scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease) and have the unique property of being infectious, sporadic or genetic in origin.
Although the precise nature of the infectious agent responsible for TSEs is not definitely identified, it is now clearly demonstrated that a protein named PrP (for Prion Protein) plays a critical role in the transmission and pathogenesis of TSEs.
This book provides the general description as well as the details of the techniques currently used for the study of prion diseases. Taking into account the pivotal role played by PrP it is not surprising that many Chapters of this book deal with the purification, the detection and the characterization of the different forms of this protein. In addition, in vitro, cellular and animal models specifically adapted to the study of TSEs, as well as bio-safety procedures are described. Each Chapter is written by scientists involved for many years in their respective domain of prion biology who give the best of their knowledge in this technical document. This volume is a very useful tool for any laboratory which recently decided to contribute to the study of TSEs as well as for teams already engaged in this field for many years but interested in extending their technical capacity toward new methods.
Features:
Purification of PrPC and the Pathological Isoform of Prion Protein (PrPsc or PrP-res)
Animal Models of TSEs
Cell Culture Models of TSEs
PrPsc Immunohistochemistry
Western Immunoblotting Techniques
Antibody Production and ELISA
TSE Strain Typing in Mice
Biosafety and Decontamination Procedures
Cell-free Conversion of Prion Proteins
Cytotoxicity of PrP Peptides
Cyclic Amplification of Prion Protein Misfolding
Of interest to:
Researchers and clinicians in the fields of cell biology, biomedicine, neuroscience/neuropathology, veterinary medicine and biochemistry.
Book Description
Cell culture techniques are invaluable to the modern researcher but difficult to carry out successfully. As part of the series of Handbooks in Practical Animal Cell Biology, this volume offers a concise practical guide to the basic essentials of the technique. Researchers new to cell culture will find a clear explanation of the essential equipment of a tissue culture facility, including tissue culture media and sera. It describes methods for growing suspension and adhesion cultures, including how to store cells and prepare primary cultures from cells. For those already culturing cells, the handbook will act as a handy reference to the basic techniques. The essence of the book is to deal with the generalities of cell culture and to give a grasp of the basic concepts before involvement in more specialized work in the field. Ideal for anyone moving into tissue cell culture techniques or looking for a concise reference book.
Customer Reviews:
From Book to Bench-Cell Culturing Made Easy.......2000-05-16
Whether a first year college student or a seasoned researcher, General Techniques of Cell Culture is a must. GTCC simplifies the complicated world of cell culturing without insulting. The authors, Maureen A. Harrison and Ian F. Rae, make no assumptions about their readers, and take the task of explaining large amounts of scientific information in an organized and easy to read format. This handbook goes beyond general lab techniques and provides not only the "how-to", but also gives the developing lab the where at, as it rounds out each section with a directory of services and researchable references. By providing time honored techniques, General Techniques of Cell Culture also takes some of the trial and error out of propagating healthy cells in the lab. This alone should make the transition from book to bench less tedius and more productive.

Book Description
The theoretical background of cytogenetics as well as the practical methods to investigate chromosomes from Drosophila to mammals and humans are presented in this book. Theory and practical protocols on the following topics are included: Cell culture methods, chromosome preparation and banding techniques, radioactive and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) methods and their derivates (chromosome painting), meiotic chromosome methods using light and electronic microscopy, the polytenic (Drosophila) and lampbrush (urodeles) chromosomes as well as flow and slit scan cytometry. The editors, all at INRA, played a prominent part in the development of cytogenetics. Paul Popescu, a specialist for domestic animals worked with gene mapping, Helene Hayes, together with Popescu showed the homology of bovine and human chromosome disorders, and Bernard Dutrilaux focused on human cytogenetics.

Book Description
Animal Cell Culture: A Practical Approach has sold over 10,000 copies since its publication in 1986, and remains one of the most popular titles in the series. This new edition takes account of the progress that has been made in the field. Although the basic principles remain the same, significant advances have been made in areas such as serum-free media, scale-up, and flow cytometry. As these techniques have developed as tools for the cell biologist, their availability to the non-specialist has also increased dramatically. Use of the tetrazolium salt MTT as a colorimetric indicator of viability has made a considerable impact on cytotoxity assay, and DNA fingerprinting has revolutionized the identification of individual cell strains. These, and other developments in the techniques described have made this new edition essential. The emphasis remains on presenting techniques in a readily accessible form, with detailed protocos given throughout. This volume will be of use to researchers involved in both biological research and the commercial exploitation of animal cell culture.
