2 out of 5 stars Deeply fascinating or just Deeply disturbed?.......2005-10-05

Peter Beard has not gotten wiser in his old age. He has given into his vices and chosen the superficial payoffs over any morals. He has found no escape from his aimlessness, no direction from his chaotic meanderings. Where has this man ever really gone? Why has he become so tragic? This book reveals the illusion of greatness, the anticipation of accomplishment. But sadly, decades later, we see how withered and little this man has become. One wonders, was he ever even exceptional? He seemed fearless and passionate. Now, he just seems fatally emphatic and senseless. He is like a machine grinding to a halt.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous biography on Peter Beard.......1998-02-05

"The Adventures and Misadventures of Peter Beard in Africa" is a spectacular look at the life of this well-known photagrapher and author. The writing is vivid and fascinating. The book is also illustrated throughout with Mr.Beard's excellent photographs. This book is a history lesson, ecology lesson, and art lesson all rolled up in one book, and is well worth reading. A real gem, about an amazing personality!

                Description:
Cape porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis) appear to have an important influence on landscapes through both biotic (foraging) and abiotic (soil turnover) impacts. Porcupine abundance and abiotic effects across the landscape were investigated in Nieuwoudtville, South Africa, a semi-arid area characterized by an extraordinary diversity and abundance of geophytes. Porcupine numbers were measured in 50 burrows, and the number of burrow entrances was a good predictor of the number of porcupines it contained (r^2=0.76). Occupied burrow density was estimated to be 2.6burrows km^-^2 and porcupine density on the study farm was estimated to be 8 animals km^-^2, which is high relative to other Hystrix populations in semi-arid environments. This can probably be attributed to the high abundance of geophytes in the region. Annually, porcupines disturb 0.34% of the soil surface and 1.6m^3ha^-^1yr^-^1 of soil is displaced across the landscape, through the excavation of 160-3463 diggings per hectare. Up to 2.2m^3 of soil is displaced per hectare per year in the natural Dolerite Plains vegetation, but very little foraging activity occurs in previously or currently ploughed lands. The extent of disturbance in Nieuwoudtville is on a par with or higher than that recorded for other porcupine populations in arid or semi-arid regions. Other studies have shown that porcupine diggings disturb plant community structure and create fertile sites for plant germination and recruitment. Porcupine diggings in Nieuwoudtville contained significantly more seedlings than adjacent areas. Thus, through widespread foraging pits, soil turnover, and numerous burrows, porcupines modulate the availability of resources to other organisms. Therefore, Cape porcupines are likely to act as ecosystem engineers in this landscape. Porcupines should be included in any conservation actions involving the unique geophyte flora of Nieuwoudtville.

                  Description:
Outdoor pig fattening in organic farming has become more popular over the past few years, due to benefits in relation to animal welfare and economical reasons. On the other hand, ecological risks like nutrient accumulation in soils and leaching of nitrate (N) into groundwater have been described and discussed in outdoor pig productions systems. The regulations of the national organic farming associations and the EEC directive limit nutrient inputs by stocking rates adapted to maximum nitrogen (N) loads of 112 and 170@?kg@?ha^-^1, respectively and maximum phosphorus (P) loads of 43@?kg@?ha^-^1 according to national regulations. N and P inputs and their distribution were calculated and measured under specific management strategies. In a field experiment at the experimental farm of Kassel University in central Germany with loessial and clayey soils. Ratios of concentrate and feed compositions were evaluated in relation to N and P inputs to soil. Moving of huts and troughs and weekly extended area for grazing were examined for their effects on nutrient distribution. Additionally, soil structure was assessed. The results indicate that with nutrient input and their distribution as a main feature of management, the ecological risks of nutrient accumulation and leaching can be kept on a tolerable level. Most relevant measures to reduce nutrient losses in outdoor pig production are: restrictions in the amount of concentrate offered to the pigs, supply with field fodder, avoidance of fodder loss, optimising the crop rotation to ensure that nutrients in the soil are used efficiently. Available field fodder has to be considered to reduce the ratio of concentrate additionally. Fodder loss should be avoided. Nutrients have to be taken out of the soil by following crops, as a result of integrating outdoor pig fattening into crop rotation. The distribution of N and P was homogenized by moving huts and troughs at short intervals and when paddocks were provided at weekly intervals as strip grazing. Due to the impact of pigs, the infiltration rate at soil surface was reduced at highly frequented areas around troughs and in front of huts, which were 1-10% of the paddocks' size.

A short, biceps-friendly "textbook" on reproduction that covers most of the current knowledge in the field. Very well organized, and beautifully set up. Look at those colorful pictures and diagrams. I enjoy reading this book very much. But, when we were preparing for our endocrinology exam, we found something in table 3.4, p.39, on luteinizing hormone structure - it says that the beta-subunit of LH has two carobohydrate chains (instead of one?). Hopefully it's just a small typo. Well, nobody's perfect. I still give it nine out of ten.

                  4 out of 5 stars Course Book.......2000-04-01

I am currently using this book for a college course. The book is perfect for people first learning about mammal reproduction. The book is clearly organized into subjects. I recommend this book for people who want a foundation in reproduction.

                            Book Description

Plants producing an aromatic oil, fruit, or seed have been used in religious ceremonies, for personal use and adornment, and for flavoring throughout history. Today there is still considerable pressure by consumers world-wide to use perceived natural compounds in edible and personal products. It is essential that producers be able to service this growing demand efficiently, economically, and above all, reliably. Additionally, many essential oil crops form part of the economy of countries with growing populations where there is an inevitable pressure on agricultural land as a resource for food and fuel crops. It is therefore important to understand and develop ways of ensuring maximum return on the investments made in establishing and growing these crops. This book addresses these issues. It is concerned with growing essential oil plants to obtain an aromatic derivative in an economic and reliable manner. Each chapter covers a different family. A brief history of the recent use and economic development of the crop is given, and the cultivation and care of the crop is discussed. Current research findings and recommendations for improved agronomic practices and ways of adding value to the crop, such as extracting the oil, are also discussed. This book is key reading for all researchers and agronomists concerned with essential oil crops. Agricultural advisors and development workers will find the book helpful, and it also contains valuable information for commodity traders and policy makers working in this area.

                                Book Description

Big ideas made simple -- six books in an incredible new series that explains important scientific ideas more clearly than ever before. One of the greatest achievements of the age, the sequencing of the human genome is here explored and explained in detail, from the work of the earliest geneticists to the publication of the genome itself, with all the implications it has for the future. This stimulating new series uses an innovative mix of graphics, artwork, and photographs to explain and illuminate the most important scientific topics of the day. Unique in popular science guides, Essential Science uses bright, full-color images to make traditionally "difficult" subjects more accessible. Each title focuses on a scientific or technological topic that is currently provoking debate and is likely to have a widespread impact on our lives. Lively, readable text from top science writers ensures all readers -- from 14+ schoolchildren to academics -- gain a full understanding of the facts and related issues. Under the direction of renowned science writer John Gribbin, expert authors describe, in lively, jargon-free text, the principles and discoveries behind each subject, summarize what is currently known, and predict future issues and trends.
