This book is eminently suitable to an upper-elementary classroom studying the New England region or the economy of Vermont. Step by step, with one chapter devoted to each part of the maple syrup-making process, the black and white photography and clear text leads you through a wintery world of magic. I sat down and read this book cover to cover and then immediately read it all over again, not wanting to leave the peaceful world of the sugarbush (a grove of maple trees). The crisp and snowy wonderland setting does not mean that sugaring is easy, however; it is intensely hard work spread out over a four week time period. Maple syrup is harvested in March, in that break between coldest winter and earliest spring, when the days are above freezing and brightly lit but the nights are still cold. The direct, strengthening light of the sun warming the trees after the vernal equinox gets their sap flowing and it is from this sap that the syrup is made. That part I knew but everything else about this book revealed a world that was new to me, from the exact temperature sap becomes syrup and what happens if you hit too high or too low, how long the sap will last before it spoils, how the syrup is tested, the precise density it must be to store properly, even how old you have to be before your parents let you Really Help (which is, of course, the part most interesting to small children). This is a world where everyone travels by ski or by sled, which is amazing to me; I can't imagine that depth of winter. The text is as warm and delicious as maple syrup itself: "The sparkling sap, clear and bright, runs like streams of Christmas tinsle. They each take a lick and wonder how so much crystal sweetness can come from a gnarled tree older than all their grandparents put together." Close-up pictures of all steps of the process as well as the exact equipment used makes this book as informative as it is enjoyable. A fascinating look at an age-old process, this book is a must-read for any unit on winter, trees, and the magic of nature.

This is the first of a planned two-volume work discussing the mathematical aspects of population genetics, with an emphasis on the evolutionary theory. This first volume draws heavily from the author's classic 1979 edition, which appeared originally in Springer's Biomathematics series. It has been revised and expanded to include recent topics which follow naturally from the treatment in the earlier edition, e.g., the theory of molecular population genetics.

The origin of species has fascinated both biologists and the general public since the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859. Significant progress in understanding the process was achieved in the "modern synthesis," when Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, and others reconciled Mendelian genetics with Darwin's natural selection. Although evolutionary biologists have developed significant new theory and data about speciation in the years since the modern synthesis, this book represents the first systematic attempt to summarize and generalize what mathematical models tell us about the dynamics of speciation.
Fitness Landscapes and the Origin of Species presents both an overview of the forty years of previous theoretical research and the author's new results. Sergey Gavrilets uses a unified framework based on the notion of fitness landscapes introduced by Sewall Wright in 1932, generalizing this notion to explore the consequences of the huge dimensionality of fitness landscapes that correspond to biological systems.
In contrast to previous theoretical work, which was based largely on numerical simulations, Gavrilets develops simple mathematical models that allow for analytical investigation and clear interpretation in biological terms. Covering controversial topics, including sympatric speciation and the effects of sexual conflict on speciation, this book builds for the first time a general, quantitative theory for the origin of species.

Gavrilets' survey of fitness landscape models and their role in understanding the mechanisms and nature of speciation is indispensable to anyone (with a sufficient mathematical background) wishing to understand this relatively neglected area of population genetics. The text is thorough, well-organized, and well-written. It is a must-read for students of population biology.

In the theory of population genetics, fundamental results on its dynamical processes and equilibrium laws have emerged during the last few decades. This monograph systematically reviews these developments, beginning from elementary examples and explanations. Mathematically, the main emphasis of the book is the investigation of iterations of a quadratic or fractional quadratic operator in the simplex. By the use of some non-associative algebra, many results can be obtained in explicit form eg. the explicit description (Bernstein problem) of stationary quadratic operators, and the explicit solutions of a nonlinear evolutionary equation in the absence of selection, as well as general theorems on convergence to equilibrium in the presence of selection. Some of the algebraic theory used is interesting for its own sake. The reader can use this book either to obtain a thorough and comprehensive coverage of the present state of knowledge of the subject, and to learn new methods from it, or else to obtain an elementary introduction to the field.

Well It is different than quantitative genetics, forget about the statistical work,forget the statistical rules. Now a new subject exists. Mathematical genetics (NOT QUANTITATIVE GENETICS). This book is a must for every one who is interested in genetics and who is planning a life for it. The book its self is not highly related with diagnosis genetics but IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORY OF GENETICS GET THIS BOOK WELL IT MAYBE EXPENSIVE BUT DO NOT FORGET THAT YOU WÝLL BUY ONCE NOT TWICE :) BUY IT DO NOT THINK MUCH AS I DID

The book has been assembled in honour of the late Gustave Malecot, one of the pioneers of theoretical population genetics. Whilst early chapters summarise Malecot's life and scientific contributions, the rest of the book is devoted to topics that trace their origin in Malecot's work. Several of the contributions describe recent developments in the coalescent theory, which can be viewed as a generalisation of Malecot's method for analysing identity by descent. Other chapters discuss recent developments in the study of geographic variation, genetic linkage, and allele age. The diversity of topics and the effectiveness with which various theoretical methods can be applied to DNA sequence data illustrates both the increasing relevance of theoretical population genetics and the depth of Malecot's insight into fundamental genetic processes.
