Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great modern standard text on array processing.......2007-05-10

The best up to date book for array processing. It is a huge book and has a massive amount of material. Easy to follow for the most part, but only if you are comfortable with DSP basics, random processes, matrices, and work the problems. Good stuff. There are some other popular books like Mozingo and Miller and Compton but they are rather old.

5 out of 5 stars For the serious reader look no further.......2007-02-21

It was a great pleasure for me to discover this book after having tried to read several other books on the subject. The explanations and mathematics are crystal clear and anyone but the most indolent should have a great pleasure in the detail and effort put behind this book. As one example, I have looked for an explanation of the theory behind Dolph-Chebychev windows. This was clearly and simple described, so the reader has a chance to understand (and remember!) the material, instead of just jotting down many equations of various unknown origin. A great many array geometries, methods and techniques are considered and explained in detail. All in all, a lot of information I only wish, I had available several years ago.

For the serious reader I have found no comparable book on the subject.
For the beginnner, "adaptive signal processing" by Widrow may be more appropriate.

1 out of 5 stars A Cook-Book of Mathematical Formulae.......2006-07-28

I cannot imagine that this book has been written by Van Trees. I was a fan of him after studying his 1st and third volumes during my MSc, but taking a course on Array Signal Proc. and Adaptive Array Sig. Proc. in the next one, i was ehgulfed in mathematics and only mathematics, with no intuitional background at all. The author only has given mathematics, not have grip on the theoretical concepts or may be he has failed to convey them. I will never tell anybody about this book for this course, its for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Great academic reference - Practitioners: Use with caution!.......2003-04-06

This book is the fourth book in Dr van Trees' series "Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory". It relies extensively on volumes I and III (but not volume II), and the reader of volume IV will want to have volumes I and III available.

As for the book itself, it is BIG. For some reason, it gives the impression of being somewhat inflated. I can't pinpoint the exact reason for this, but I suspect it must have something to do with the relation between font size and paper size. The publishers claim there are 2000 references in the book. This may very well be true, as the bibliographies after each chapter generally are 10 to 15 pages long. Unfortunately, there is no overall bibliography in the book. While such a bibliography would inflate the book by somewhere between 100 and 150 pages (it is ~1500 pages in the current version), I think it would be worth adding it.

What the contents is concerned, it is a definite academic angle on the material and the presentation. The practitioner may want to pay attention to the fact that the book title is "_Optimum_ Array processing", not "_Practical_ Array Processing". The "Multiple Signal Classification" (MUSIC) method and "Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariant Techniques" (ESPRIT) algorithm are discussed extensively in the later chapters, but some details that turn out to be cruical when putting these methods to practical use appear to be missing in this book. The very motivation for developing the ESPRIT algorithm is that the MUSIC algorithm is extremely sensitive to array calibration data, i.e. that the array calibration matrix must be known with very high presicion. The inventors of ESPRIT, Roy and Kailath, pay meticulous attention to this problem in their journal articles (which are cited by van Trees). The problem of lacking array calibration data has indeed spawned an entire research field known as "blind source estimation". This is not mentioned at all in this book.

The second issue I would like to point out is that alternative, SUBoptimum array processing techniques are very breafly commented in section 9.4 (which all in all is half a page long). I find one sentence in that section somewhat annoying:

"We found that, for estimating the [Direction of Arrivals] of plane-wave signals the [suboptimum] algorithms did not perform as well as MUSIC and ESPRIT"

and then the author defer from discussing these algorithms further. I am sure this decision can be defended from the point of view that the scope of the book is optimum array processing. However, I would like to see how the author tests the suboptimum methods, how they perform, and what he bases his conclusions on. There is a vast difference between tests with synthetic data, generated by the computer, and working with data measured in the real world. My experience from working with real-world data from short arrays at low signal-to-noise ratios, is the exact opposite: The optimum algorithms work bad, if at all, while suboptimum algorithms do the job.

All in all, this book gives an as complete overview of the state-of-the-art in array processing as practically possible by one man to give in one volume. There are a couple of shortcommings, though. If this book was written by any other author and was published in any other series, it would be a clear five-star. However, Dr van Trees has, with his "Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory" series, established himself as perhaps _the_ authority in the field, and therefore I believe this book should be measured by somewhat stricter standards. Thus the four stars.

            Book Description

The LNCS journal Transactions on Rough Sets is devoted to the entire spectrum of rough sets related issues, from logical and mathematical foundations, through all aspects of rough set theory and its applications, such as data mining, knowledge discovery, and intelligent information processing, to relations between rough sets and other approaches to uncertainty, vagueness, and incompleteness, such as fuzzy sets and theory of evidence.

This fourth volume of the Transactions on Rough Sets opens with an introductory article by Zdzislaw Pawlak, the originator of rough sets. Seven papers explore the theory of rough sets in various domains: a framework for reasoning with rough sets utilizing extended logic programs, optimization of decision trees, fuzzy set and rough set approaches to dealing with missing data, generalization of the indiscernibility relation as an aid to dealing with incompletely specified decision tables, deterministic and non-deterministic decision tree complexity in the context of both finite and infinite information systems, analogy-based reasoning in classifier construction, and incremental learning and evaluation of structures of rough decision tables. In addition, two papers in this volume introduce new applications of rough sets, namely, supervised learning in the gene ontology and the design of an intrusion detection system.

              Book Description

Tree species differ in their effects on soil properties and biogeochemical cycles. The supply of nitrogen typically differs by two-fold under the influence of different species on the same soil types, and rates of trace gas fluxes (including NO, N 20 and CH 4) may differ even more. The influence of global changes on soils (and feedback between soils and the atmosphere) will depend more strongly on changes in the distributions of tree species across landscapes, than on direct effects of climate on soils.

This book examines the state of knowledge of the effects of tree species on soils, considering evidence from broad natural gradients in species distributions, and from "common garden" experiments where several species have been planted on the same site. Topics include the influence of the chemistry of forest litter on soil biogeochemistry, the dependence of soil biotic communities on tree species, and the interactions of physical, chemical and biological factors in determining the overall effects of different species.

Case studies from across North America, Europe, Russia, South America and Australia illustrate the key role played by tree species in determining long-term development and sustainability of soils.

                    Book Description

Whether you're bewildered by the vast number of organisms inhabiting our planet or just crave a clear and comprehensive explanation of the endoplasmic reticulum, Instant Biology will guide you through the science that brings the very act of living (and dying) to life.

From an enlightening walk down the double helix stairway to a look at Darwin's evolutionary musings on the diversity of existence, Instant Biology lays bare the facts of life. But Boyce Rensberger goes beyond the birds and the bees to delight in the details that make science fun, like the stubborn micro-species of mite that insist on living in your eyelashes.

                    With Instant Biology you'll learn:

Everything you always wanted to know about sex and the single cell.
How the fuzzy pizza crust under the bed is diligently working its way to the top of the food chain.
Which is larger: the interior surface of your lungs or a badminton court.
How a species of soil and pond dwellers can dry out, shrivel up, then return from the dead.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for parents.......2006-03-10

I bought this book so I could help my high school son learn biology. The book the school gives to the kids is poorly written, needlessly technical and vague.

Instant Biology refreshed my memory of college biology. It was fun, humorous and fascinating--a bit like an episode of NOVA.

I gave a copy of the book to my son's biology teacher. I highly recommend it.

                    4 out of 5 stars Basically a good book.......2005-02-24

As an introductory book for the layman, Rensberger's Instant Biology does a more than adequate job. There is a less than expected emphasis on phylogenetics, which some will miss, and there is certainly an overemphasis on the controversial theory of evolution (which Resenberg strongly supports), but otherwise I found the book to be enjoyable, very engaging, and informative.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK DELIVERS AS PROMISED.......2003-06-28

Rarely does a book live up to the back cover blurb or in this case the title. Rensberger crammed tons of micro facts into 200 pages. He uses metaphors like "wolf in sheep's clothing" to explain how virus trick their way into human cells. He explains that in AIDS transmission the retrovirus is given a free ticket into the DNA of the T-cell.

This book covers the essentials of biology in abbreviated fashion, showing the food webs that link all minerals, plants and animals together. Plants can store energy in the form of fat for later use or animals can digest that fat for their use-it doesn't matter-one life is like another. He tells how all life is solar powered (except for the deep sea archaea). The book takes many of the mysteries out of living cells, asserting that cell replication is but a reaction of chemical shape shifting, and explains in detail how DNA/RNA does its thing to produce proteins.

The overall picture I got from the book was of a human creature designed to shape the assembly of all the pieces that make up itself. Pick your metaphor, Boyce says, hand in glove, lock and key, wrench and nut or lego blocks-nothing would transpire in the cell, maintenance or replication, if the shape of the proteins did not fit together. Some of the facts were amazing: that all life, plant and animal uses the same genetic code in codifying its past structure. The former bacteria, mitochondrion, "is like a universal battery that fits all devices within a cell." Cellular membranes are constructed of shapes like heads and tails-one end liking water and one end hating water-similar to the tropism of plant leaves seeking sunlight. What one learns from reading this book is that our conscious self is but a driver of one's car-like body, knowing little of what is constantly occurring under the hood.

5 out of 5 stars Pound for pound, one of best intro to bio books around........2002-10-08

For [money] you'll have a hard time finding a better intro to Biology. The illustrations are great, it goes into surprising depth in a wide variety of subjects with amazing clarity. How this book does not have 5 stars needs explanation. Look at the other reviews... see the one about evolution not being true. There you go :) .

                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing.......2000-03-14

I idly picked up this book expecting it to be a member of the disgusting clan of "Thirteen dimension string theory in a week for the totally clueless." Instead it is a fascinating overview of biological science, complete with humor, history and wonderful imagery. It makes you wonder why biology is not one of the hottest conversation topics around, once you begin to appreciate the complexity of living organisms. It contains more facts than the average popular science book and is wonderfully written. While you're reading this one, check out his "Life Itself," which goes into great and fascinating detail on the cell.
