    Book Description

Ecologists, agronomists, and others who may question the validity of current models for determining sustainable growth of agroecosystems, need a new set of analytical tools that more effectively address the complex nature of related processes. Those who challenge traditional assumptions of optimization and static factors in agricultural modeling demand new methods beyond differential equations and traditional statistical tests. Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Agroecosystems explores alternative ways to study agricultural sustainability, presenting new approaches to organizing data and applying complex systems theory to actual cases. This innovative text recognizes the changing dynamics of the multiple processes and cross-relations within an environment, proposing a clearer analysis of agroecosystems than that which can be provided by rigid, reductionist methods. Main concepts, new vocabulary and narratives, and practical examples open the book, followed by technical chapters that provide a more detailed explanation of concepts. The final section of the book presents a tool kit based on these concepts, resulting in strong support of empirical observations that challenge traditional notions regarding the sustainability of farming systems, food systems, and agroecosystems.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to college .......2005-10-04

I thought it was a good overall book that covered many areas of college life. The only problem I had with it is I did not know it was published by a Christian publisher. He added some things inside the book that was insulting of me as a non-Christian.I hate politically correct, and this is not a kind of "represent all religions, or don't talk about yours" kind of perception.I think it's good to talk about your religion, no matter what it is, but he had written only that you as a christian might have a hard time learning how to bring people to the Christian way of thinking.I do not want to be converted, as that seems a little intolerant, and infringing on my right to not be bulldozed by mormons, catholics, buddists, islamist, and jehova witnesses.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-06-23

I'm an incoming freshman to UGA, Go Dawgs!!!!, and I absolutley loved this book. It was funny and easy to read. Lots of helpful hints for the nervous freshman.

    4 out of 5 stars Not a bad read.......2004-05-26

Honestly, I read this book. I felt it was very down to earth and a very easy read. Zach does his best to make incomming freshmen at ease with their transition into college life. For the most part it is humorous and has enough wit to keep most readers interested.

I will say that it doesn't give the most complete look at college life. In order to impart your college freshman with a complete point-of-view of the college experience I recommend (in addition to this book):

Been There, Should've Done That II : More Tips for Making the Most of College by Suzette Tylor. (ISBN: 0965608611 ) Decent advice, and a quick read.

College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read (ISBN: 0966412206 ) by Guy Stevens. The advice is spot on and any book hated by college administrations can't be all bad! Also some of the stories are pretty classic.

    1 out of 5 stars Awful book!.......2004-05-07

This is one awful, awful book. I hated it. It was NOT funny, as I think he intended it to be, and it had no content value at all. He is basically trying to sell his diary. To be honest, I didn't finish it. It didn't help me at all.

    5 out of 5 stars W00t!.......2003-12-27

This book is FREAKING HILARIOUS! I got it for Christmas after my first semester here. I finnished it in two days. It was hilarious. When I get back to school, I'm gonna recommend it to all my warped friends. What's really funny is when he mentions ADD and a really tiny attention span and I remember I have one of those also and.....what was I talking about again? Hi....baby rabbits are cute....I'm going to go study my coloring books again now....

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR BIOLOGY!!!.......2004-12-16

I wouldn't have gotten through biology without this book. I can't even begin to count the number of slides that we had to know. This book had them all, AND they were labeled!!! Plus, I'm horrible at drawing and I never had to draw a picture of the slides I looked at in lab because I could come back to this book for reference. It's DEFINITELY worth the money, and I can't imagine anyone not agreeing.

4 out of 5 stars A Guide to Biology Lab.......2000-09-29

A must have for any Biology sdtudent!!!! I couldn't have survived this class without it.

5 out of 5 stars How to Ace Bio Lab.......2000-09-29

This book was originally recommended to me for an Intro to Bio course at Barnard College. It was great then, especially because the book is labled (unlike the very best slides) and you can point to a picture and ask the TA "what's that?" without having to say, "what's the circular thing in the center that's stained pink?", which could be just about anything. Also, it really helped for the lab practicals, cuz God knows my drawings .... I kept the book because I'm a Bio major, and now, 2 years after that Intro to Bio class, I'm in a Plant Biology lab, and it's come in handy again. No one else in the lab has this book, and they've been asking to borrow it and photocopy it. I was searching Amazon for them, when I decided to enter this "write a review and win something" contest. Anyhow, It's a great book for anyone doing serious Bio lab type stuff. On a side note, It's not the best on the market for fetal pig dissection pictures, cuz it's all in black and white. There are better color books out there. Questions? Email me at .... I'm a junior and will be there til Spring 2002. I don't know how long these reviews stay up. Anyhow, good luck hunting!

There are many useful features in this edition. It's a shame they don't work. One of the most heavily used features is Find; it finds things and displays a list properly, but gives no links to the View in which the item exists! You have to use the dropdown lists for each of the Views to actually find the View for the item. Find worked in Version 1, so someone must have fixed it. The product is virtually useless without Find, IMO.

I'll tell you in one sentence. It made the difference between a B and A when it came to lab practicals. I've heard it can be used in more advanced classes, too. Ask yourself--do you want to have your access limited by the hours of your school's science center or do you want to have it at home where you can study as long as you need--whenever you want?

2 out of 5 stars Not too much there.......2006-02-15

The textbook has poor illustrations and is meant as a guidebook to the ADAM Interactive Anatomy 4 Student Edition. One would do far better purchasing Netter with the CD, plus the ADAM Practice CD if you like to quiz yourself with the pins in anatomical objects. The ADAM CD is facinating as it allows you to slowly dissect the subject but it lacks many landmarks. I still feel as though the scope of Netter is far superior.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A great improvement.......2001-08-24

Having written a rather scathing review of the previous edition of this guide, I thought it only appropriate that I write a review for this fantastic rewrite. My biggest problem with the previous edition was the quality of the images. However, the majority of the poor images of the previous edition have been replaced by wonderful drawings for this latest edition. There are still a few problematic pictures (such as the alligator skull with many of the sutures not drawn), but as a whole I give the new pictures 5 stars because of the extreme detail and the ease of use. The addition of repeating the most important images at the back of the book add to this books use. And, the fact that the pages are perforated, means that a student could easily put the pictures in any order that they please. Although I had been planning on changing lab texts, I now see no point as Kardong and Zalisko, 3rd ed. is the best out there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent art, very clear directions.......2001-08-16

This 3rd edition is filled with updated art that in many respects exceeds any of its competition. Further, nearly every piece of art is printed again in the back of the laboratory manual to allow the figures to be sorted and reviewed separate from the laboratory text. This feature is especially attractive to my students.

The skeletal material is well illustrated and includes detailed descriptions of turtles and alligators not addressed in other laboratory manuals. The text is succinct and clearly organized. Especially unique and useful are the numerous short boxed essays describing particular aspects of structure-function relationships and the evolution of the specific anatomy under examination.

I strongly recommend this manual as an attractive, clearly written, and thoroughly illustrated manual to support any course in comparative vertebrate anatomy. It also makes for a wonderful reference book for vertebrate biologists.

In addition to the traditional cytogenetics still used as the basic methodology for everyday clinical diagnosis, new molecular cytogenetic techniques provide a useful basis for routine diagnosis. Flourescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has become a standard technique, and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), spectral karyotyping (SKY), and multi-color FISH have shown their potential for diagnostic purposes. Following a section on tissue culture, chromosome staining and basic information about karyotyping, nomenclature and quality standards, protocols of relevance for comprehensive cytogenetic diagnostics are presented.
