Book Description
Land-use change is one of the main drivers of many environmental change processes. It influences the basic resources of land use, including the soil. Its impact on soil often occurs so creepingly that land managers hardly contemplate initiating ameliorative or counterbalance measures. Poor land management has degraded vast amounts of land, reduced our ability to produce enough food, and is a major threat to rural livelihoods in many developing countries.
To date, there has been no single unifying volume that addresses the multifaceted impacts of land use on soils. This book has responded to this challenge by bringing together renowned academics and policy experts to analyze the patterns, driving factors and proximate causes, and the socioeconomic impacts of soil degradation. Policy measures to prevent irreversible degradation and rehabilitate degraded soils are also identified.

Book Description
This work examines the issue of accelerated soil erosion, which has become an increasingly serious concern in the twentieth century. Aspects considered include on-site impact of erosion; application of soil science to problems of non-agricultural uses of soil, such as mineland restoration, urban uses and disposal of urban wastes; soil contamination and pollution by industrial activities; and athletic and recreational uses of soil. Soil Quality and Soil Erosion will be a useful text for soil scientists, agronomists, foresters, and environmental scientists as we enter the next century.

From the author: Maintaining environmental quality implies sustainable agricultural production systems that preserve and protect soil resources. Cover crops play a dual role maintaining resource quality by providing ground cover to prevent wind and water erosion and carbon input to enhance soil quality. Carbon input from cover crops and crop stover play a vital role in agroecosystems for insuring long-term economic benefits with minimal impact on soil, water and air quality. The fresh carbon from cover crops is critical because of the role of the soil organic carbon cycle in controlling water, temperature, aeration, and soil structure. Both aboveground and root biomass are important to chemical and biological properties for the role in nutrient cycling. The benefits of available nitrogen from symbiotic fixation makes legume cover crops an environmental and economic preference. Use of selected cover crops and associated allelopathic effects can reduce chemicals required for weed control. While there are positive and negative aspects of cover crops from the economic viewpoint, when environmental costs are properly credited, cover crops surface as a major contribution to soil and environmental quality. The challenge is to assure cost-effective production using cover crops to maintain a healthy environment, a healthy economy, and a high quality of life.

Description:
The primary objectives of this research were to determine SWAT model predicted reductions in four water quality indicators (sediment yield, surface runoff, nitrate nitrogen (NO"3-N) in surface runoff, and edge-of-field erosion) associated with producing switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) on cropland in the Delaware basin in northeast Kansas, and evaluate switchgrass break-even prices. The magnitude of potential switchgrass water quality payments based on using switchgrass as an alternative energy source was also estimated. SWAT model simulations showed that between 527,000 and 1.27 million metric tons (Mg) of switchgrass could be produced annually across the basin depending upon nitrogen (N) fertilizer application levels (0-224 kgNha^-^1). The predicted reductions in sediment yield, surface runoff, NO"3-N in surface runoff, and edge-of-field erosion as a result of switchgrass plantings were 99, 55, 34, and 98%, respectively. The average annual cost per hectare for switchgrass ranged from about $190 with no N applied to around $345 at 224kgNha^-^1 applied. Edge-of-field break-even price per Mg ranged from around $41 with no N applied to slightly less than $25 at 224kgNha^-^1 applied. A majority of the switchgrass produced had an edge-of-field break-even price of $30Mg^-^1 or less. Savings of at least 50% in each of the four water quality indicators could be attained for an edge-of-field break-even price of $22-$27.49Mg^-^1.

From the author: Erosion of agricultural land and transport of associated fertilizer chemicals nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in runoff can be detrimental to both soil productivity and water quality. In the Southern Plains, gully erosion is of concern due to periodically intense rainfall and a large acreage of erodible soils. As little information is available, we studied the loss of sediment, N, and P in runoff over 13 yr (1980-1992) from two adjacent extensively gullied native grass watersheds (3.8 and 5.7 ha of 5% slope and class 4 erosion) in the Little Washita River Basin, OK. In 1983, the gullies on one of the watersheds were treated by land shaping, Midland Bermuda grass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers] establishment, and construction of a runoff detention pond. Prior to gully treatment, greater (p [greater than] 0.05) amounts of sediment, N, and P were lost from the subsequently treated than untreated watershed. Following gully treatment, 27,500 kg sediment, 7.1 kg N, and 4.1 kg P [ha.sup.-1] [yr.sup.-1] were lost from the gullied watershed, while only 4,900 kg sediment, 3.1 kg N, and 1.6 kg P [ha.sup.-1] [yr.sup.-1] were lost from the treated watershed. While gully treatment had no effect on nitrate-N and ammonium-N loss, dissolved P and bioavailable P losses were increased six- and three-fold, respectively. This was attributed to the application of fertilizer N and P to the treated watershed only The loss of N and P in runoff from gullied and treated watersheds was accurately predicted using kinetic and enrichment ratio approaches with soil properties reflecting the main zone of runoff and soil interaction. Subsoil (5-20 cm) properties accurately predicted N and P release and transport in runoff from the gullied watershed, whereas accurate predictions for the treated watershed were obtained with surface soil (0-5 cm) properties. The cost of gully treatment was $1,098 [ha.sup.-1], with a reduced loss of 210 kg sediment, 5 g N, and 3 g P in the ensuing 10 years for every dollar spent on treatment.

Book Description
The book provides six complete sample examinations which duplicate both the multiple-choice and the free-response (essay) portions of the exam. Covered in this comprehensive book are the three areas specifically addressed on the examination: molecules and cells; genetics and evolution; and organisms and populations. For college- bound high school students.
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this one.......2003-09-08
This book is terrible for reviewing for the AP biology exam. It has little review of the subject, and what review it has is almost worthless. The practice exams are extremely easy, and give fasle confidence for the test. I got a 5 on the 2003 exam, but it certainly was not due to this book.
Another OK prep book.......1999-12-27
I bought this book by winter and read it on the plane in winter break. Although the review was very short, it has 6 sample tests, which are very similar, but somehow easier than the AP exams. I suggest you should get the Cliff Notes is you have a lot of time. Otherwise, this book will be fine.
This book is full of misprints and other errors!.......1999-12-02
I have receieved a 5 on the May, 1999 AP Biology Exam, and one of my aids was this book, which I found to be completely worthless. The book lacks much information with only about the first 75 pages of large print text actually being dedicated to teaching you a whole year's worth of AP Biology! The rest of the book is just sample tests which look unprofessionally made and some questions are ambiguous. I was so frustrated with this book because the many misprints that it contained, I seriously do not recommend anyone who is taking the AP Biology exam to buy this book, instead, buy the Cliff's Notes for AP Biology, that is the best book ever for the exam, after reading that, I completely understood every aspect of Biology.
A good reference source with good tests........1999-05-16
It has an excellent review section and then the tests are full and complete.

If You Take AP Biology, Get this Book.......2001-08-01
Buy this book, borrow this book, steal this book. I don't care how you get this book, just get this book! There is no better book out there for the AP Biology test and I am living proof of that. The Princeton Review is a great book that helps you get all of the concepts nailed, but you won't get all the details from the Princeton alone. You will, however, from this book. I normally don't say this about prep books, but you really don't need a textbook. This book does not just offer you a review, but used properly, it can teach the material as well. The text book we used was horrible and unreadable(If you're using Biological Sciences by Keeton and Gould, know that I feel for you) and our teacher was not exactly much help either. Oh yeah, this book features a great review of the labs too. This was extremely helpful considering that out of the fourteen required labs, our class managed to do none of them. How did I get a five? The question baffles me too. But I certainly know where to start. This book and the Princeton Review, nothing more, nothing less.
The Best Preparation Guide - Really!.......2001-05-12
To prepare for my Biology exam, I bought three books. The Barron, the Princeton Review, and the Cliffs. Even though I only covered 1/2 of the Cliffs book, I ended up with a 4. Reason - because I used this book. The Princeton Review doesn't cover enough. The Barrons was written too much like a textbook. I found two advantages of this book: 1) I was able to answer all 4 essay questions fully, because it was material covered in the Cliffs. 2) The Cliffs is written in such a way that the material is easy to study. There is no unnecessary language. It is all only the important facts. 3) Lastly, the laboratory review was very useful. In class, we had been unable to cover all the labs. The Princeton Review and Barron don't cover the lab part well enough compared to the Cliffs. I reviewed the lab part the night before, and it was very easy to understand.
In some ways, I feel that I have learnt much more in my review during the past few days, than what I have learnt in class.
Had I covered the whole book, yes, a 5 would have been expected.
A study guide that actually helps.......2000-09-12
I took AP Biology last year as a junior with a teacher who had never before taught an AP class. It was difficult to keep on schedule with the material in class. In fact, my class did not even finish studying animal anatomy and physiology. Despite this, I still got a five on the test. Now don't get me wrong, this guide would probably be extremely difficult to make sense of with no textbook, but this book really helped me get my facts straight and rush through the key parts that my class omitted. I cannot compare it with other study guides out there, but I think that this is the only study guide I have ever used that really had an affect on my grades in class, and on my final AP test.
Good luck, and down with the evil college board!
Buy and Use this Book!.......2000-07-20
I took an AP Biology class this year and it was a joke! We didn't learn anything, NOTHING the entire year. I used this book from the beginning of the year and, along with my textbook, which was horrible, and the Barron's Guide, managed to learn everything about AP Biology. No Joke! I taught myself biology out of this book. I even got a 5 on the AP test! Many of the questions in this book were almost exactly repeated on the AP exam. Another especially helpful thing was the Laboratory Review in the back. Even though our class didn't do the labs, I understood everything about them. If you need to learn biology. Get this Book. Today!1
A Quality Review Book.......2000-07-13
This book was one of my many test prep books for AP Biology. Its strengths and its weaknesses lie in its conciseness. The subject reviews are very brief and would probably not be helpful in teaching you the material; however, if you are using the book as a review tool, it is perfect. The subject reviews always stayed on topic and contained just the right amount of detail for the AP test. It also contained a review of the 12 labs of the AP Biology course, which are a big part of the exam. My biggest complaint is that there was only one full practice test, and there were very few practice quizzes throughout the book. This is where it falls behind the other AP Bio test preps. But for a quick (last-minute) review, this book is definitely your best bet.
Book Description
Three full-length practice exams are presented with all questions answered and explained. The author also presents detailed reviews of all test topics and includes multiple-choice and free-response questions with answers at the end of each topic's chapter. Test topics include: biochemistry, the cell, cell respiration, photosynthesis, cell division, heredity, the molecular basis of inheritance, classification, evolution, plants, animal physiology, the human immune system, animal reproduction and development, ecology, animal behavior, and an extensive laboratory section.
Customer Reviews:
NOT HELPFUL..........2006-07-08
This book does not contain enough information. I read it in 3-4 days and felt like it had not done me any good. It's ok for getting practice questions and practice essays but not for studying. In order to study for the ap biology test, I recommend getting the barron's ap biology and the cliff notes ap biology. Those two books are the only books needed to ace the AP biology exam.
For Future Test Takers...Dont buy this book.......2006-06-05
Well where to begin...first of all, the whole text is in font 8 so you will get blind by the time you are done reading its tiny text. The topics are covered inadequatley. I used Princeton Review and all the questions were similar.

Bad buy.......2002-05-09
This book did not help at all. Presently, I am preparing for my AP biology examination in 6 days, and I have to say that this book DOES NOT HELP AT ALL.Do NOT buy it : it is just a waste of money. If you want a supplement to CliffsAP Biology, get the Princeton Review one...it is much better. This book is not detailed at all and the practice tests are atrocious. One positive point: the vocabulary lists are helpful (that's why i gave it 2 stars!).
Good Review of Biology.......2000-04-22
This book gave a thourough review of biology. I especially liked the outline in the begining of the book and the list of vocabulary terms is quite helpful. The charts in the book are good too. This book could go a little more in depth in explaining respiration and photosynthesis. This book also has nice practace tests, but they are a bit easier than the exam.
Excellent AP Biology Book.......2000-01-24
This review book stood apart from other ones that I had read. It had great summaries and listed the key topics for every section. The questions allowed me to grasp the material better. I recommend this book to everyone.
