Great Textbook Follow-Up.......2007-01-04
I love this book! My textbook can be unclear on certain architectural elements and I can almost always count on this book to give me a definition and a drawing. If you are looking for colored pictures this isn't the right book for you but if you need some great reference material this is a great book.
Illustrated Dictionary of Historic Architecture.......2005-10-10
This book is extremely helpful when taking any Architecture History course. Everything I have needed to know is in this book. The diagrams are more understandable than my textbook.
Dictionary Covering World Architecture.......2005-08-01
Cyril Harris has produced two great architectural dictionaries. The first one published in 1977 is the one currently being reviewed. His second dictionary is entitled, "American Architecture: An Illustrated Encyclopedia" and it was published in 1998 by Norton.
If your interest in primarily in American Architecture stick to "American Architecture". It is a newer book and its has beautiful line illustrations of which the majority come from the Historic American Building Survey (HABS). It has over 2,500 definitions and 1,000 illustrations.
However, if your interest is in World Architecture, this is the book for you. In this volume, Harris provides concise definitions for over 5,000 architectural terms and there are over 2,000 illustrations. From ancient ruins to 20th Century Modern Architecture, this illustrated dictionary covers the full spectrum of architectural achievement. All the illustrations are black and white line illustrations and they appear to principally come from the illustrated magazines of the 19th and Early 20th Century. Highly recommended.

There are so many facets of archetectural history that building terms seem to have lost their meaning. Especially in the ancient buildings from ancient Greek to medieval Gothic periods, the terms are so numerous -- and necessarily so.
The definitions are so clearly written in practical, easily understandable language. The illustrations are so detailed and clean that minute discrepancies between one term and another are easily identifiable. When writing reviews or analyses of various architectural buildings and styles of buildings, this book should always be within reach of the pen or computer terminal.

Very useful when writing architectural descriptions of building exteriors. Photographs of buildings, a fairly complete dictionary of architectural terminology, and examples of descriptions are helpful, also.

Pretty good, but there is room for improvement........2002-07-04
I thought this would simply be a nice book to have (and of course the cover looks cool). It's got almost every architectural term I can think of, but the page layout is a little cluttered if not cramped & the paper they used is a little odd for any book (heavy and rough).
It would make an excellent gift for a perspective architecture student, but is really not necessary for professionals. Perhaps Burden could figure a way out to have the architectural dictionary work backwards (i.e. from the picture figure out what the term is).

A fool-proof guide to understanding architectural elements.......1998-11-14
Ernest Burden's Illustrated Dictionary of Architecture is long on illustration, a commendable fact given that most conventional architectural dictionaries many times leave one guessing as to meanings even after repeated readings of definitions. If you're ever a bit fuzzy as to the difference between a spandrel and a pendentive, a spire and a pinnacle, Burden's 'point-and-shoot' approach and cross referenced entries may prove invaluable to clearing up such gray areas of the field's nomenclature.

This lavish book is a compilation of architectural and landscape terms used in the colonies and states of the Southern seaboard from Delaware to Georgia. The purpose of the work is to trace the growth of a regional and increasingly technical and academic vocabulary in the period from 1607 through the 1820s. The glossary contains 1,500 terms ranging from building types to methods of construction. All terms are succinctly defined, describing meanings found in primary documents of the period. Extracts from various contemporary sources are quoted in most entries in order to elucidate the context and contemporary usage of these words and phrases. Nearly 400 drawings, photographs, plates, and prints illustrate building types, architectural elements, construction details, tools, materials, and landscape features. In the period between the adaptation of English building practices in the seventeenth century and the beginning of industrialized and standardized building practices in the antebellum period, a wealth of architectural terms were used to describe the Southern landscape and the practice of building. During this period, craftsmen and clients used many traditional terms in new and unusual ways. Many of these, such as the names given to certain framing methods, are distinctly regional in nature. Southerners also shaped the language of building by retaining archaic meanings long after they had passed from use elsewhere in America and Britain. Along with regional and traditional terminology, Southern building was enriched in the late colonial and early national period with the principles and language of classical architecture introduced by English architectural books, professionally trained builders, and knowledgeable clients acquainted with the heritage of ancient architecture and its modern revival. Readers can refer to the glossary for definitions of archaic terms found in documents, to verify the use of specific words at different periods of time, to identify names of architectural details, to recognize how architectural terminology has been used and modified over time, to trace the emergence of distinctive building types, and, by comparison with other parts of the country, to identify regional patterns in the usage of architectural and landscape terms.

Solid overview on kilnforming.......2007-09-11
I've got both this and the previous edition of Cumming's book in my collection. The author has plenty of hands-on experience and a broad knowledge of many glass techniques and processes. I wouldn't call this a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial in studio technique but it will certainly get you started.
