Book Description

This book explains in detail why and how to use management intensive grazing, and what to expect from its use for most kinds of livestock. I provide many examples to illustrate fine points, including producing milk, beef, and lamb on pasture alone, nutrient cycling, grounding energizers, recovery periods, economics, and much more. I present everything that I learned during 17 years of using Voisin management on my own farm, and answer all questions that have been asked me during conferences and farm visits with farmers. This book shows a way to increase your farm's profitability and reduce its labor demand -- thereby improving your quality of life -- while properly and responsibly caring for the land and the plants and animals that live on it.

4 out of 5 stars Murphy teach us the basics, once again........2007-01-11

Murphy's book is a comprehensive review of Voisin Grass Productivity book complemented with his own experience in Vermont.
I read it and found it very helpful in my search for milk production productivity and profits in my dairy farm in the Coffee area of Colombia.
I am still looking for books or experiences with Voisin rational grazing in the Tropics, where we use mainly grass to feed our cows outside and have followed feed companies advise on supplementing grains and feedstuffs, without questioning prices of grass, milk, corn silage and supplemental feeds.
If Murphy worked with the Voisin system in Brasil it would be great to have his experience written in a second book for Latin America.

5 out of 5 stars Rational vs Rotational - This concept could change your farming life forever..........2005-08-28

Challenge your thinking and change your ways. Your pastures will thrive, your animals will be healthier and you'll have more time to lay in the hammock instead of throwing hay bales around. Andre Voisin, a French farmer, biologist and chemist--as well as a teacher at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine in Paris, designed a system that he calls "rational grazing" (as opposed to the generic term "rotational grazing"). Rational grazing takes into account the needs of the animal and plant, rather than the animal alone. The term "rational grazing" can mean two things: the thinking way of grazing management, or a system for rationing out the forage. Interested? Then read the book!

5 out of 5 stars Greener Pasture on Your Side of the Fence: Better Farming Vo.......2002-12-24

Loved this book - although I have only one horse and can not do some of the intensive grazing techniques, I do have a better understanding about maintaining the pastures. This has been very useful and will enable me to get together with the neigbors and do several horses on the pastures in rotation. We will all have more edible forage for the horses.

5 out of 5 stars Has what it takes!.......2001-12-06

I'm reading this book for the third time - there's just too much info to digest in one reading. We are just starting with cattle and are using this book as our bible. It not only explains the many advantages of raising animals using managment intensive grazing (more profit, environmentally friendly, humane, better nutrition, ease of animal handling), it goes into great detail on HOW to do it. My husband used the chapter on fencing to select products that have received many positive comments from visitors to the farm. I especially enjoyed reading about pasture plant diversity and how cattle "harvest" it. Our cattle look (and taste) great, much to the shock of long-time cattle farmers in our community who are surprised that two greenhorns like us can do so well. We attribute our success to this book and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a Book Rebirth.......2003-06-30

This book was written in 1999, during the go-go years of the late 1990s when people were jumping from job to job like there was no tomorrow. There were plenty of employment opportunities-locally and across the country and the world. With such abundance, a lot of people were just jumping without investing sufficient time and thought into the decisions they were making.

Then the economy tanked, taking a lot of hopeful careers down with it. Hark! The economy is coming back! Things are picking up again and workers will have an increasing number of job options open to them. As we shift back toward a sellers' market, workers in all fields will again have decisions to make. The search for new opportunities is kicking into gear and thousands of people will be looking for exciting jobs...which may not be right around the corner.

This book will take you step-by-step through a process that has baffled many job-seekers over the years. Nope, it's not one of those academic treatises full of theoretical stuff. You'll have a workbook in your hands-one that will put ideas in your head, questions in front of your face, and pages to write things down. "Greener Pastures" is very specifically for people who are looking for a job in another location; they want to move to another city, another state, for whatever reason(s).

In the initial chapter, Andrea Kay, a specialist in job seeking, will challenge why you want to consider a move in the first place. Be ready to be forced into some research-internal and external. Then, in the subsequent chapters, you'll find questions, information, suggestions, and techniques to streamline your process. Your mind will be opened by this book, which will also help you fill it back up again with the information you need to find that distant job the right way. Result: you'll go after your next position with a significantly higher level of confidence which will support greater achievement.

Bonus: You'll find some good resources in the back of the book, right before the comprehensive index. "Greener Pastures" is a usable tool.

Note: While this book is based on an out-of-town focus, there is plenty of value for the job-seeker who does not necessarily want to move to another city. The process may reaffirm your desire to grow where you are planted. "Greener Pastures" is a book whose time has come...again.

5 out of 5 stars I found the job of my dreams because of this book........1999-08-06

I've always wanted to leave home in the midwest and move to the east coast but was afraid to just pack-up and take-off. This book gave me the attitude, confidence, tools and knowledge to explore my dream without leaving home. I was shocked to discover I could not only find a job on the east coast - I found my dream job and will be working 2 blocks away from the beach doing something I've always wanted to do and making a lot more money than I thought I could make. Thank you Andrea Kay! This book is insightful, well-written and took me step-by-step through the process. It's the best 12 bucks I've ever spent in my life. I'm going to eat lobster once a week!

    Book Description

Social scientists theorizing about political economy and the allocation of resources have usually omitted migrant communities from their studies. In Greener Pastures Arun Agrawal uses the story of the Raikas, a little-known group of migrant shepherds in western India, to reexamine current scholarship on markets and exchange, local and state politics, and community and hierarchy. The Raikas are virtually invisible in the regions through which they travel, as well as to the wider Indian society, yet they must operate as part of these larger spheres for their economic survival.
Agrawal analyzes the institutions developed by the shepherds to solve livelihood problems. First, by focusing on the relations of the shepherds with their landholder neighbors, he explains why the shepherds migrate. He shows that struggles between these two groups led to a sociopolitical squeeze on the access of shepherds to the fodder resources they need to feed their sheep. Then, in an examination of why the shepherds migrate in groups, he demonstrates how their migratory lives depend on market exchanges and points to the social and political forces that influence prices and determine profits. Finally, he looks at decision-making processes such as division of labor and the delegation of power. Politics is ubiquitous in the interactions of the shepherds with their neighbors and with state officials, in their exchanges in markets and with farmers, and in their internal relations as a community.
Interspersing the words of the Raikas themselves with a sophisticated deployment of political theory, Agrawal has produced a volume that will interest scholars in a broad range of academic disciplines, including Asian studies, political science, human ecology, anthropology, comparative politics, rural sociology, and environmental studies and policy.

      Book Description

U.S. agriculture is the envy of the world. Although output from U.S. farms is high, there is a growing gap between what is being produced and what could be produced, partly because innovation and production are constrained by a growing maze of environmental regulations. The chapters, authored by leading experts in their fields, focus on the major environmental constraints that limit U.S. food production without necessarily improving environmental quality. Each paper documents a specific issue, discusses the regulatory response, and offers ideas for reform.

    • U.S. farmland
Are we really running out of prime farmland? Or is this another example of Chicken Little?
    • Sensitive habitat
How can environmentally sensitive land be preserved? Does it make sense to set aside habitat forever? How can the market process be strengthened?
    • Urban sprawl and agricultural land
Can controls on agricultural land use prevent urban sprawl? Are there market alternatives to command and control?
    • Chemicals and agriculture
The use of agricultural chemicals accounts for much of the high growth of output from U.S. farms. Are chemicals that contribute to agricultural productivity harmful to the environment? Have regulations made things better or worse? Can we return to natural farming? At what cost?
    • Genetically engineered food products
Are genetically modified crops dangerous to human health? Do they harm the environment or do they improve it by reducing pesticide and chemical use? Will more regulations on genetic engineering actually harm the environment?
    • Taxation
How do taxes affect land use? Are they an effective tool for encouraging prosperity?
    • Water
What is the role for water markets in agriculture? Can they balance water use with in-stream environmental demands? Why are farmers concerned about water markets?
    • Endangered species protection
How has the Endangered Species Act affected U.S. farmers and ranchers? Has it worked? How can species-protecting market incentives be introduced?

4 out of 5 stars Another fine entry in the series........2001-08-20

Dr. Nightingale continues to learn her veterinary craft. This time she travels away from home and (naturally) lands in the middle of a murder. Meanwhile, Charlie's up to another of his bizarre money-making tricks. And what's going on with Allie? This one has fun along with the creepy corpses. And what's it all got to do with horses? Aah, read it and see!

      2 out of 5 stars A Sheepish Entry.......2000-07-16

As an avid reader of the Dr. Nightingale series I was disappointed by this effort. The main plot is contrived. Didi seeing the dairy industry and her practice failing goes to a convention in Atlantic City to bone up on the latest techniques in the horse industry. When she wittnesses the death of one of the speakers, the widow seeks her out and offers her a small fortune to edit her husband's book in Florida. But more people die and Didi thinks she is next. The clues are obtuse and the motive undetectable. It needs to be explained in the final chapter.

Back home Charlie is running amuck again. A little of Charlie goes a long way and this was way more than I needed. On the other hand, Rose and Allie provided the most interesting subplot. And because of it I am very eager to read the next book in this normally excellent series.

      4 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2000-07-13

In Hillsbrook, New York, the economy is dramatically changing. The Upstate New York town is seeing more and more of the locally owned dairy farms going out of business. Dr. Deirdre "Didi" Nightingale, predominately a dairy veterinarian, knows for her to survive the onslaught, she must change her practice, which is why she is traveling to Atlantic City to attend the Eastern States Veterinary Convention. In Dutchess County where Hillsbrook is located there is many big horse-breeding stables that hire vets and she plans to become one of them.

Didi particularly wants to hear the lecture of renowned vet Eleazar Wynn, who has had extraordinary success with lame horses. Didi happen to be in a shoe store at the same time as Wynn when an unknown assailant kills the latter using a letter opener. Wynn's widow offers Didi a large sum of money to complete her spouse's manuscript. Didi accepts the offer only to watch people near her being killed. Not wanting to become the next victim, Didi begins her own investigation.

The long running Dr. Nightingale series continues its lighthearted, fun approach to reading due to an assortment of eccentric, hilarious secondary characters. DR. NIGHTINGALE SEEKS GREENER PASTURES is an enjoyable one-sitting read that holds the audience spellbound with its unexpected humor that fits comfortably inside a well-designed story line. Lydia Adamson has the ability to create an amateur sleuth novel that simultaneously appears lighthearted yet puzzling.

Ken and Matt graduated police academy; were they happy? Sherry left Ken. Ken walked away from the fame and glory he had sought so long to achieve, concluding that without Sherry, all his tomorrows would be empty. Matt was broken when he received the news that Ken was back in Forest Lake. Matt didn't know which way to turn. Jesus reached down and gently steered him back onto the path he should travel and restored him to his former joy of fellowship with God. Martha remained with Matt. He heard from Ken that he joined the Provincial Police as Chief of Police. The hamlet they had left was a fast growing community. And there's lots more!

5 out of 5 stars The Asquinn Twins and No Greener Pastures (review).......2005-09-14

It was really exciting to read this title as it answeres a lot of questions about Ken and Matt that were left sort of up in the air at the end of the title before it.(The Asquinn Twins and Where The Trail Forks)It was exciting to see the boys humbled and brought back to their former relationship with God. No not their former relationship but both were on a higher plane than before.
As Pastor Asquinn had predicted in the title before, both boys did come back to Forest Lake humbled but God began to raise them up. Like Sherry predicted, Ken became a commander of men when he signed on as the first ever Chief of Police of the newly organized Forest lake, Ontario, police detachment.
Matt also returned to Forest lake and joined Ken in policing Forest Lake. This was all so touching and writing so vividly and tenerheartedly.
I certainly hope I am not the first to read and then write a review for this book. I am looking eagerly forward to more titles in this series.

Models help us understand the nonlinear dynamics of real-world processes by using the computer to mimic the actual forces that are known or assumed to result in a system's behavior. The complexity of biological systems, from cells to ecosystems, are particularly well suited to this method because the feedback processes governing them have made it difficult to identify natural laws describing their behavior. This book does not require a substantial background in mathematics or computer science and encourages all students and scholars to actively incorporate modeling into their education and research. Using STELLA and MADONNA software, Modeling Dynamic Biological Systems applies methods of computer simulation to real-world phenomena in a wide range of topics from laboratory biology and ecology. The book includes sections on physical and biochemical processes, genetics, single- and multiple-population dynamics, and catastrophe and self-organization. STELLA and MADONNA run-time software as well as computer files of sample models accompany the book on a CD-ROM. The software is compatible with both Macintosh- and Windows-based computers. About the Series: The availability of powerful, intuitive software for developing and running simulation models of real-world phenomena promises a revolution in studying, teaching, and thinking about complex problems that range from the functioning of a cell to the functioning of an ecosystem to the functioning of a national economy. The books in the series Modeling Dynamic Systems will promote the spread of "systems thinking" by integrating state-of-the-art modeling techniques with the theories and concepts of specific disciplines or interdisciplinary topics. The unifying theme of the series is the ease, power, and transparency of model-building.

5 out of 5 stars Demystification of modeling.......2002-01-29

This book is a concise, effective introduction to dynamic systems modeling
and how it can be used to provide insight to biological problems. The use
of dynamic modeling is demonstrated through example models, a new model
each chapter. The authors walk the reader/student through each model and
then make suggestions as to how it can be further exploited for greater
understanding of the problem. The greatest aspect of this book lies in
its demystification of computer modeling in general and shows that any
person, no matter their quantitative skills, can effectively model a
system by adhering to certain fundamentals. The models that are provided
range from ecosystems to individual cells, espousing a 'systems' approach
to every level of biology. Overall, this book is easy to understand; providing a mental tool by which one can bring greater clarity to complex, dynamic problems.

5 out of 5 stars The means to an improved understanding of biological systems.......2002-01-18

The increasing interconnectedness and complexity of ecological and biological systems is undoubtedly increasing the potential environmental consequences of our decisions. Thus the growing importance of improving our understanding of the characteristics and internal relationships that govern the system's behavior. Hannon and Ruth clearly illustrate how we can think about problems from a `dynamic systems' perspective, and how we can use technical programs to apply this new way of thinking as a tool to model biological systems. They present the means to build a greater understanding of the phenomena we see, the context of the problems that confront us, and the potential and expected effects of any interventions we may make.

Like the book's theoretical foundations, the modeling software used is both user-friendly for easy up-take by beginners, and sufficiently powerful for those at a more advanced level needing a robust software package. The reader is actively guided through the model development, simulation and interpretation process. This learning by participation and experience increases the readers understanding of the wide variety of contexts in which modeling techniques can be applied, and how to apply them.

Those interested in biological issues will find this valuable from the practical biological examples that are used, and the novel approach in which these issues are addressed. These range from spatial and population dynamics, to models of organisms, genetic movements and physical systems.

Further, the clarity of writing, and the familiarity of the examples and problems addressed, makes this an enjoyable educational experience for all people interested in developing a new perspective of the environment in which they live and work.

Perhaps most importantly, the analogical strength of the techniques used and models developed is such that researchers in all fields of academia, from economics to sociology, will benefit from it. It challenges us to re-examine how we define the problems we seek to solve, and to discipline our existing conceptualization of systems. It presents us with tools that challenge, yet compliment and strengthen traditional scientific approaches.

5 out of 5 stars A great dynamic modeling book.......2002-01-16

Modeling Dynamic Biological Systems is a wonderful book for students and researchers interested in learning about dynamic modeling. I used this book in the first class I took dealing with dynamic modeling and found it very easy to understand and follow. The basic design of the book is to introduce the basic concepts of dynamic modeling and how to get started designing models in STELLA. Descriptions for designing models and the example models are based on STELLA modeling software, an intuitive iconographic program that allows even non-technical readers to begin modeling quickly. After the introduction to dynamic modeling the book is divided up into parts based on different areas of biology: Physical and Biochemical Models, Genetics Models, Models of Organisms, Single Population Models, Multiple Population Models, and Catastrophe and Self-Organization. In each of these parts there are a number of models dealing with different issues. The models are clearly explained and both the iconographic diagram and the equations are given so users can create the example models from the book or check their own work.

This book is a great resource for both novice and experienced modelers. Biologists from all areas will find this useful if they are interested in learning about dynamic modeling. Even if one's area of interest is not exactly one of the areas focused on in the book, the skills and basic method of dynamic modeling will be learned and the reader can then apply these to their area of interest. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dynamic modeling, even non-biologists. With its great examples and clear explanations this makes a great resource for learning about dynamic modeling.

5 out of 5 stars A superb text for learning dynamic modeling.......2002-01-13

Having never taken a course in computer-based dynamic modeling, this text proved to be an excellent introduction to the topic - and then some. The opening chapter clearly explains the reasons modeling is so important in our complex world, and subsequent chapters in the opening section walk the student through the basic processes of using STELLA and MADONNA to explore dynamic biological systems. (The text is supplied with a run-time version of STELLA.) Later sections build students' modeling skills by adding layers of complexity as a wide variety of biological questions are examined.

The presentation style permits exploration of so many topics by first presenting the basic elements of a model and then guiding the eager student to adjust the model to answer additional questions. Thus, the text truly has something to offer anyone interested in biological systems. Furthermore, it is not necessary to study the chapters in order. Yet the text is carefully woven with analogies so that the skills and knowledge gained from one chapter's model can easily be directed to building and solving those in other chapters.

I also found the text easy to follow during lectures. As the models were presented in class, the equations and the figures in the text - both models and graphs - allowed me to focus my attention on the discussion rather than on getting the "pictures" down in my notes. The text contains plenty of white space around equations and figures so that the student can simply take notes directly onto the pages. One of the most useful features in each chapter is the box showing the equations "in the basement" of STELLA that drive the model. The text is definitely a learning tool, not simply a book to be read but not used.

"Modeling Dynamic Biological Systems" is a text that will be kept close to my computer and pulled from the shelf often. The systems thinking and independent learning encouraged by this book will be very useful as I complete my education and move into my new career.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, hands-on book for learning dynamic modeling.......2002-01-08

I have used this book to learn dynamic modeling both as part of a class and in research work. This is an excellent book for beginners and professional modelers alike. The book uses STELLA, an iconographic modeling software, as the platform for learning. However, the knowledge gained through the book and the software is based on more general modeling philosophies that can be applied using other modeling software or programming languages as well. The approach used here is to learn by hands-on training through examples. One does not need to study a lot of theories to start developing models; rather the theories and principles evolve through the modeling exercises. It is not required, though advisable, to purchase the software to go through the examples as the book comes with a run-time version of STELLA.

Another aspect of the book that I found to be interesting is that after going through the initial few chapters, the rest of the book can be studied in any order. It includes a host of examples from various areas of biological sciences and it is possible to focus on one's area of interest - be it population dynamics, genetics, environmental pollution or epidemics. It gives a fair introduction to spatially dynamic modeling as well. I must also mention that one does not need to be a biologist to use this book. I have had friends with economics and engineering backgrounds who used this book to learn dynamic modeling.

One of the most important strengths of this book is that it is easy enough to be accessible to people from a wide range of disciplines and at the same time advanced enough to expose the user to moderate to highly complex modeling challenges. I strongly recommend this book to academics who are teaching dynamic modeling and anyone else who is involved in research that include dynamic processes and interactions. This book teaches dynamic modeling as a versatile tool - so much so that I even used it (for fun) to model my personal finances!

I suggest that the reader take a systematic approach to study this book while sitting in front of the computer and doing the examples as you go along. This will maximize the learning from this book. This is certainly one of the most practical books on modeling that I have come across.
