Customer Reviews:
Top Notch.......2005-08-21
This book has saved several of my goats lives, I've shared it with my different Veterinarians, they all agreed it was very helpful,, 3 have now bought their own copies.
Great Reference and learning Tool.......2002-02-11
Goat Medicine is a MUST for folks who have goats and want to understand and learn about goat health and diseases. Don't run your veterinarian off! but this book can help the owner/manager recognize symptons, understand prevention and work out reasonable treatments...treatments that work into an already too busy day. Yes, there is theory.... Great if you like to understand and run ideas through your own head. skip that part, if it doesn't make sense, and go onto more basics-- prevention, control, treatment.
If my 75 animals aren't 100%, this is the first book I open. And the book stays on my truck seat, kitchen table, bedside until some questions are answered. There are many books with basic goat care. If that is what you want, fine. If you want to dig a little deeper, understand goat health and learn more about your animals, then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!! Well worth the money..just by saving/helping one animal.
P.S. Exceptional for international goat health..if that's your thing.
A cracking good read for old billys and young kids alike!.......2001-12-12
Never in all my years have I found such a moving and touching tale, disguised within the often dry confines of a medical textbook.
Full kudos to the authors, and to those bounders who complained about the lack of detailed information in the "poison plant" section, well, what do you think your village wise-woman is there for? Certainly not her good looks, at any rate.
It's OK I guess.......2001-12-07
Having a vetinory background, I frankly think that some of the so-called 'cures' are a bit dubious, but this book really helped when our flock came down with red-scruff mange last sprong, so I guess it falls somewhere between "invaluable" and "childish scrawlings".
An excellent review of the field.......2001-10-28
This book is a very thorough review of the literature on goat medicine. Its bibliographies alone are worth its price. The work seems primarily intended for veterinary students, researchers, and veterinarians willing to consult the literature (Dr. Smith is on the Cornell University veterinary faculty). It isn't intended as a cookbook of treatments and will disappoint if consulted in this way. But if one needs a basic understanding of any aspect of goat medicine, this is where to start reading. The authors provide coherent, thoroughly referenced overviews of each topic that provide frameworks for evaluating individual research papers. Anyone caring for significant numbers of goats, even if not a scientist or academic, should regard this as a necessary textbook of her vocation. She should at least absorb the overviews, even if she does not consult the references. We look after 250 goats and could not navigate without this book. I only wish a new edition would be published, to take in work done during the last seven or eight years.

Book Description
Addressing decades of rain forest destruction, concerned scientists, often in concert with various environmental movements, have amassed an impressive amount of information on deforestation in areas throughout the world. In Tropical Forests, Thomas K. Rudel analyzes hundreds of local studies from the past twenty years to develop a much-needed global perspective on deforestation. With separate chapters on individual regions, including South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa, Rudel's work offers an up-to-date assessment of changes in the extent of the world's tropical forests. Through a meta-analysis, Rudel identifies the social, economic, and environmental forces driving forest cover change since 1980.
In addition to synthesizing a range of local studies, Rudel recounts the stories of people whose work preserves, destroys, or restores forests. Rudel's explanation of what has happened in each of the world's tropical forest regions reveals continued destruction in regions with large forests and some regeneration emerging in places with small, remnant forests. In the concluding chapter, Rudel considers the implications of these trends and describes policy directions for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development in each region.

Book Description
Recent research suggests that the application of the old concepts of pasture management developed in Europe, USA and South Africa have been unsuccessful in the Tropics; in some areas under-utilisation has resulted in poor animal output and low economic returns, whereas in other areas overgrazing has resulted in soil erosion and weeds. This book sets out to examine the problems involved in the utilisation of tropical and subtropical pastures and to explain how pastures may be managed to meet the requirements of both plants and animals for growth and replacement. Following an overview of the livestock systems of the tropics, the effects of grazing animals on the edaphic, biotic and climatic environment of the pasture are described. The response of the animals to the available pasture are discussed in terms of pasture attributes of nutritive value and sward structure, selectivity and grazing behaviour. Methods for attaining continuity of forage supply are also described. The author, Professor L. R. Humphreys, has been involved for many years in extensive research of tropical and subtropical pastures. A central objective of his work has been to effect a synchrony between pasture available and the forage requirements of the animal. This book is a culmination of much of his research and will be invaluable to all disciplines with an interest in tropical and subtropical agricultural practices.
Book Description
Despite the vast number of books and reports on tropical deforestation, there's confusion about the causes of forest loss and forest poverty, and the effectiveness of policy responses. At Loggerheads seeks to describe ways to reconcile pressures for agricultural expansion in the tropics with the urgent needs for both forest conservation and poverty alleviation. It diagnoses the causes and impacts of forest loss and the reasons for the association of forests and poverty. It looks at how policies - modulated by local conditions - act simultaneously on deforestation and poverty, creating tradeoffs or complementarities, depending on the situation. The report brings to the surface problems that impede adoption of favourable policies, describing institutional and technological innovations that might help overcome these impediments.
Book Description
Emerging Threats to Tropical Forests reveals the remarkably diverse panoply of perils to tropical forests and their biota, with particular emphasis on recent dangers. William F. Laurance and Carlos A. Peres identify four categories of emerging threats: those that have only recently appeared, such as the virulent chytrid fungus that is decimating rainforest amphibians throughout the tropical world; those that are growing rapidly in importance, like destructive surface fires; those that are poorly understood, namely global warming and other climatic and atmospheric changes; and environmental synergisms, whereby two or more simultaneous threats—such as habitat fragmentation and wildfires, or logging and hunting—can dramatically increase local extinction of tropical species. In addition to documenting the vulnerability of tropical rainforests, the volume focuses on strategies for mitigating and combating emerging threats. A timely and compelling book intended for researchers, students, and conservation practitioners, Emerging Threats to Tropical Forests will interest anyone concerned about the fate of the world’s most threatened tropical ecosystems.

First Farmers: The Origins of Agricultural Societies
ASIN: 0125571801 |
Book Description
This first modern, full-bodied study of early horticulture and agriculture in the Neotropics unites new methods of recovering, identifying, and dating plant remains with a strong case for Optimal Foraging Strategy inthis historical context. Drawing upon new approaches to tropical archaeology, Dolores Piperno and Deborah Pearsall argue that the tropical forest habitat is neither as hostile nor as benevolent for human occupation and plant experimentation as researchers have suggested. Among other conclusions, they demonstrate that tropical forest food production emerged concurrent with that in the Near East, that many tropical lowland societies practiced food production for at least 5,000 years before the emergence of village life, and that by 7000 B.P. cultivated plots had been extended into the forest, with the concomitant felling and killing of trees to admit sunlight to seed and tuber beds.
Piperno and Pearsall have written a polished study of the low-lying regions between southwestern Mexico and the southern rim of the Amazon Basin. With modern techniques for recording and dating botanical remains from archaeological sites and genetic studies to determine the relationships between wild and domesticated plants, their research pulls together a huge mass of information produced by scholars in various disciplines and provides a strong theoretical framework in which to interpret it.
Key Features
* Argues that tropical forest food production emerged at approximately the same time as that in the Near East and is earlier than currently demonstrated in highland Mexico and Peru
* Contends that the lowland tropics witnessed climatic and vegetational changes between 11,000 BP and 10,000 BP, no less profound than those experienced at higher latitudes
* Appeals to anyone concerned with Latin American prehistory
* Covers the development of slash and burn (or swidden) cultivation
* Focuses on low and lower mid-elevations

Customer Reviews:
This book saved my life!.......2000-09-15
My biology professor recommended this book to help us refresh our knowledge of the chemistry needed throughout the course. It is well written and covers all necessary information. It has a student friendly format which helps you retain the information as you work your way through the book. If I hadn't had this book, I would have been more than a little confused. Happy reading!
excellent introduction to basic chemistry.......1999-02-03
This book saved me in my college-level intro bio class. I hadn't had chemistry, but decided to take the class anyway. This gave me the basics that I needed to support what I learned in my text and class, and it provided excellent review material at the end of the semester. I found that the systematic approach to building concepts very easy to understand, and the question/answer format made the material easy to remember. I would recommend this book to any student who is taking a biology class that is heavily rooted in bio-chem who does not have a strong chemistry background.
Good study guide for basic chemistry concepts.......1997-06-06
This book of 207 pages is compact and well organized. It provides a very basic overview of chemistry concepts. It covers general concepts of Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry. Basically this book is set up like a work book that the student goes through. Answers are given right by the questions so there is no flipping back and forth. It does a fairly good job of also incorporating general biology concepts. It contains reference illustrations such as the periodic table and the electron transport chain plus numerous others. I would reccomend this book to biology teachers at the high school level who desire to teach more chemistry in biology or who are teaching a combinded chem/bio class

Microbiology text, It helped me........2006-06-22
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me. Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.
I also used a study guide "Microbiology Study Guide Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This book has awesome questions for studying during the semester and really gets you ready for the exams.
A lot of information....disorganized.......2006-04-03
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.
Great Service!.......2006-03-13
I ordered this book on a Friday for a class that started the following Monday and it was here first thing Monday morning. The book is in excellent condition. I would use this seller again!
Not enough information.......2006-03-10
I believe that the best way to learn science is to fully understand all the concepts. That way, it is easier to remember details and to apply your knowledge. For some reason, less advanced science courses focus on covering the same breadth of information less in-depth, rather than handling fewer topics and putting more effort into understanding. This book follows that trend. While some issues are explained, much more is left up to the reader to simply memorize. Not an ideal textbook, but sufficient.
