Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems (Advances in Soil Science (Boca Raton, Fla.).)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1566704596 |
Book Description
Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems provides information on soil processes and the carbon cycle in cold ecoregions as well as the soil carbon pool and its fluxes in the soils of cold ecoregions. Filling a void in this area of soil science, this resource explains soil processes influencing C dynamics under natural and disturbed ecosystems. The soils of the cold region ecosystems serve as a net sink of atmospheric C. However, an increase in global temperature could render them a net source. In the event of global warming, the cold regions ecosystems-arctic, sub-arctic, alpine, Antarctic, boreal forests, and peatlands-will undergo radical changes. Potential environmental change could drastically increase the active soil layer and influence the large C pool found in them. Topics include: soil C pools in different cold ecoregions, the impact of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the soil C pool, the method of assessment of C and other properties of soils of the cold regions ecosytems while focusing on the fate of C in permafrost soils. Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems covers the current and possible future effects of the cold ecoregions soil C pool on the global carbon pool.

Climate Change and Global Food Security (Books in Soils, Plants, and the Environment)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0824725360 |
Book Description
In order to feed their burgeoning populations, developing nations will need to double cereal production by the year 2050. This increase will have to come from existing land, as little potential exists for bringing new land under cultivation -- a daunting prospect when one realizes that increased use and significantly higher concentrations of carbon dioxide have led to a severe depletion of the carbon pool in the world's soils. This is especially telling in developing countries where tropical climates further compromise the soil's ability to recover. In Climate Change and Global Food Security, bestselling editor Rattan Lal heads up a team of the world's top soil scientists and ecologists to document the history of this impending agricultural crisis and explore possible solutions. Throughout this timely text, the authors address six complex themes: 1. The impact of projected climate change on soil quality, water resources, temperature regime, and growing season duration on net primary productivity of different biomes 2. Soil carbon dynamics under changing climate 3. The impact of changes in carbon dioxide and ecological environments on agronomic yields and food production in different regions of the world 4. World food demands and supply during the 21st century 5. Policy and economic issues related to carbon trading and enhancing agricultural production 6. Research and development priorities for enhancing soil carbon pool and food security This hard-hitting text is essential reading for anyone involved with soil and crop sciences as well as policy makers and change agents who need to come to the forefront of this issue armed with the latest information and viable solutions.

Global Climate Change and Tropical Ecosystems (Advances in Soil Science (Boca Raton, Fla.).)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1566704855 |
Book Description
Tropical ecosystems - the regions between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - play an important role in global processes, economic issues, and political concerns. In their natural state, tropical ecosystems support a large quantity of above- and below-ground biomass, and constitute a major part of the terrestrial carbon pool. Conversion of the natural ecosystem to agriculture and forestry ecosystems disturbs this ecological balance. Global Climate Change and Tropical Ecosystems presents data on carbon pool fluxes from case studies in 12 countries in tropical regions. The chapters cover: · Characteristics of tropical ecosystems · Soil and biotic carbon pools · Impacts of land use and soil management · Slash-and-burn practices · Crop residue and fertility management This volume adds to the understanding of pedospheric processes in tropical ecosystems and how to better use soils as a sink for carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. With Global Climate Change and Tropical Ecosystems you will understand the link between soil productivity, environmental quality and the global carbon cycle, not only in these ecologically sensitive regions but worldwide.

Global Environmental Change and Infectious Diseases: Impacts and Adaption Strategies
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540388877 |
Book Description
This book examines how man-made global environmental changes may affect infectious diseases. The authors look at six major global changes: climate change, the thinning of the ozone layer, soil degradation and changes in land use, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity and a degradation of ecosystems of the oceans. This holistic view of the impact of GEC is welcome for two reasons: firstly, the drivers of GEC interact and their effects are therefore difficult to separate and secondly, up until now the literature has focused on single driver views, particularly on the relationship between climate change and health.
Mankind is not portrayed as passively enduring the consequences of its own behavior, but rather as perpetrator, victim and solver of the problems. Hence, the book also deals with adaptation opportunities and describes specific policy suggestions.
Despite its name global change has very different effects locally and there are large differences in the capacity of populations to protect themselves against negative health effects. The authors address inequities both in the environmental disturbances and in the health consequences.
To tackle this task the editors have assembled an impressive group of authors from disciplines as diverse as biogeochemistry, geography, earth science, modelling, microbiology, medicine and epidemiology. However, the book remains very readable for a wide audience of teachers, scholars and interested lay people.

Microwave Radiometry of Vegetation Canopies (Advances in Global Change Research)
Alexander A. Chukhlantsev Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402046812 |
Book Description
Research into microwave radiation from the Earth’s surface in the presence of vegetation canopies, as well as the development of algorithms for retrieval of soil and vegetation parameters from microwave radiometric measurements, have been actively conducted for the last thirty years by many scientific groups and organizations all over the world. The capability of the microwave radiometric method to determine soil moisture and vegetation biometric indices was revealed a quarter of a century ago by the author and many of his colleagues. In fact, soil moisture and vegetation covers play a key role in the hydrological cycle and in water and energy transfer on the border of land surface and atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Accomplishment of large international projects that include global monitoring of the hydrological state of land surface (EOS Aqua, SMOS, Hydros, and others) shows that microwave radiometry of soil and vegetation more and more has become an instrument of practical application and operational use. In this respect, a systematic account of questions concerning the microwave radiometry of the Earth’s surface in the presence of vegetation canopies seems to be useful and is the main objective of the book.

Modelling Soil Erosion by Water (NATO ASI Series / Global Environmental Change)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540640347 |
Book Description
This book compares existing soil erosion models and determines their suitability for predicting the impacts of global change upon soil erosion. The common datasets used for the evaluation are drawn from both temperate and semi-arid areas; they represent 73 site-years of data from seven sites in three countries. Six field-scale erosion models are evaluated; five of these are continuous-simulation types (GLEAMS, EPIC, CSEP, MEDRUSH and WEPP), the other is event-based (EUROSERM). After an introduction, the results of the model evaluation exercise are presented. Subsequent sections deal with weaknesses or omissions in current modelling approaches, descriptions of specific erosion models, and potential or actual model applications.
