        Book Description

Over the last twenty years or so, most of the work on the syntax of Philippine languages has been focused on the question of whether or not these languages can be said to have grammatical subjects, and if so which argument of a basic transitive clause should be analysed as being the subject. Paul Kroeger’s contribution to this debate asserts that grammatical relations such as subject and object are syntactic notions, and must be identified on the basis of syntactic properties, rather than by semantic roles or discourse functions. A large number of syntactic processes in Tagalog uniquely select the argument which bears the nominative case. On the other hand, the data which have been used in the debate to assert the ambiguity of subjecthood are best analysed in terms of semantic rather than syntactic constraints. Together these facts support an analysis that takes the nominative argument as the subject. Kroeger examines the history of the subjecthood debate and uses data from Tagalog to test the theories that have been put forth. His conclusions entail consequences for certain linguistic concepts and theories, and lead Kroeger to assert that grammatical relations are not defined in terms of surface phrase structure configurations, contrary to the assumptions of many approaches to syntax including the Government-Binding theory. Paul Kroeger is presently doing fieldwork in Austronesian languages and teaching linguistics to fieldworkers from around the world.

Immunobiology, Sixth Edition guides the reader through the immune system in all its aspects - from the first engagement of innate immunity to the generation of the adaptive immune response and its clinical consequences. The Sixth Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, and now includes end-of-chapter questions. Immunobiology sets the standard for currency and authority with its clear writing style and organization, full-color art program, scientific accuracy, frequent updates, and consistent viewpoint - that of the host's interaction with an environment containing many species of potentially harmful microorganisms.

                  5 out of 5 stars immunobiology.......2007-06-04

This book is, without a doubt, the best introduction for studying the field of immunobiology. Very easy to grasp the concepts without all the hype.

                  4 out of 5 stars Too dense.......2007-05-09

This is a good book if you have a good instructor to give you the big picture, but it is incredibly dense. It goes into too much detail on things like the the long list of proteins involved with a given reaction, but then neglects to explain the overall signficance of the reaction.

5 out of 5 stars Overall excellent text, and great for beginners.......2007-03-08

I'm a beginner at immunology, and I have almost no immunological background. My boss, who is a medical doctor that's published and has been cited in this book, recommended this book to me, so that I may catch up to understand his research and build a foundation in immunology.

This is one of the only books I've ever been able to read on my own and actually understand and digest all the material. And everything beyond the first chapter is absolutely new material to me, but this book just made learning immunology easy and fun. It's probably the only textbook I'd ever use as free-reading material and actually enjoy. As one of the reviewers has mentioned, the best feature about this book is the "cartoons" that illustrate pretty complex biological mechanisms. I learn things visually, and I can't emphasize just how well the cartoons help me understand what I can't normally pick up from just reading the text. And, they're also really cutely drawn. From the standpoint of a beginner in Immunology, this book is probably one of the best textbooks.

                  3 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-02-24

one of the best book for immunology - written with passion and knowledge!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great informational book, but very dense.......2007-02-17

This text contains a wealth of information, probably anything you could ever want to know, about immunology. It is well presented and easily accessible with good figures and pictures.

It's only downfall is that it is very dense. A ton of information crammed into a few pages. If you plan to read this text to learn about immunology, have your coffee ready, because you're going to need to be juiced up to pick up all the details that are embedded end to end in the text.

Final Verdict: great reference book if you want to look up a fact that you are already interested in or if you are already well versed in immunology...a difficult book to learn immunology from.

                    Book Description

Currently, individuals interested in seeking an in-depth discussion of transplantation immunology must seek individual articles published in several journals, or extrapolate information from various non-transplant immunology textbooks. The purpose of this text is to provide the reader with a single source of information for the basic science of immunobiology of organ transplantation. It is unique that it focuses on immunobiology from the basic research side, with an emphasis on the cellular and molecular levels.
The readers will be physicians, scientists, and graduate students interested and engaged in the study of immunology as it relates to allo- and xenotransplantation. This book is designed to be the reference standard for the immunobiology of transplantation.

The first of its kind, The Immunobiology of Human Milk by the renowned Swedish researcher, Dr. Lars Hanson, provides a thorough and unique understanding of the wondrous biology of the immune components in human milk and how they protect the breastfed infant. In this book, Dr. Hanson describes the elaborate systems that have developed to protect the infant against infections and also promote the infant's growth and neurodevelopment. Included is a thorough description of the development of host defense and how the components in human milk assist the infant's underdeveloped immune system as it grows.

                        Book Description

This book is unique in providing pertinent information on the various established roles carbohydrate play in the immune system and how the innate and adaptive immune systems respond to this type of microbial antigens.
The editors selected only topics that have established basic and clinical relevance to this field. The topics from basic research are organised like a textbook, in order to guide the readers through complex sets of events that lead to clearance of or to immune responses toward carbohydrate antigens. The book is clear, concise and contains fully annotated summaries of the key basic and practical information on carbohydrate immunology from current literature. These topics are written by investigators from various disciplines (chemistry, medicine, biochemistry, glycobiology and immunology), creating a fine balance in the point of views presented in the book. It explores the challenges and rewards of understanding the importance of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates in health and disease, applying new knowledge from carbohydrate immunology in improving or developing novel sugar-based therapeutics, and vaccines and medicines.
This book is most suitable for glycobiologists and immunologists, but many researchers whose interests, background and expertise are in any of the fifteen topics presented in this book will also find it appealing. It is also a valuable resource for postgraduate students, clinicians or anyone else who is curious about the role of carbohydrates in immunology, and would like to see the topics combined under one cover and in relation to each other.

                          Book Description

Natural Killer (NK) cells are large granular lymphocytes of the innate immune system. They are widespread throughout the body, being present in both lymphoid organs and non-lymphoid peripheral tissues. NK cells are involved in direct innate immune reactions against viruses, bacteria, parasites and other triggers of pathology, such as malignant transformation, all of which cause stress in affected cells. Importantly, NK cells also link the innate and adaptive immune responses, contributing to the initiation of adaptive immune responses and executing adaptive responses using the CD16 FcgRIIIA immunoglobulin Fc receptor. Such responses are mediated through two major effector functions, the direct cytolysis of target cells and the production of cytokines and chemokines. The authors focus here on the nature of recognition events by NK cells and address how these events are integrated to trigger these distinct and graded effector functions.

                              Book Description

This volume compiles state-of-the-art research in the area of persistent virus infections. A distinguished group of contributing virologists explore the mechanisms by which various viruses, including HIV-1, hantavirus, hepatitis, lentivirus, and measles persist within the human host. As such, this volume considers persistence on three separate levels: persistence within the cell, persistence within the individual human being, and persistence within the human population. Genetic changes associated with virus persistence are reviewed and intervention strategies are discussed.
