                Book Description

The Asian tsunami of December 2004 killed a third of a million people, and made the Earth wobble slightly on its axis. The world was shocked. Yet we know that such massive catastrophes have happened many times before in Earth's history. Could a natural disaster of this magnitude happen again? Certainly. It is only a question of when. And earthquakes and volcanic eruptions aren't the only natural hazards that face us: we have only just begun to monitor the rocks in space that might be coming our way, and some of us have yet to wake up to the dangers of global warming. Can we survive? Yes, replies Bill McGuire. In Surviving Armageddon he guides us through the latest approaches being researched to prevent global catastrophes, or at least to minimise their effect. Solutions range from the bizarre - filling the stratosphere with millions of tiny reflective balloons to block the sun's rays, to the realistic - the lubrication of earthquake faults, the capture and storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and rockets to nudge asteroids off collision courses with the Earth. Bill McGuire argues that we can make a genuine bid to get through what nature throws at us - providing we take the risks seriously.

                Book Description

Since the 1920's, scientists and engineers around the globe have been using mathematical models to simulate the transport and fate of pollutants in natural waters. Today, and in the foreseeable future, more of these applications are being generated in an effort to develop economical solutions to water-quality problems.

The primary audience for this book is first-year graduate students, including both MA and Ph.D. students. The book, however, could be used as a basis for a senior undergraduate course. The text is divided into seven major parts. The first two cover Modeling Fundamentals, (including material on mathematics, numerical methods, kinetics, diffusion, etc). The remaining parts deal with major water-quality modeling problems such as dissolved oxygen, eutrophication, and toxics. The text is written in lecture format, ideal for case study and teaching purposes. The book stresses theory and application.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent text for self-study.......2001-02-27

This is a great book. In fact, it is the best book if like me, you don't have time to follow a teacher-led course. Stephen Chapra has authored/co-authored several engineering texts, and this one is just as well-written as the others. My need was for a text which had the right balance of theory and practical implementation details. Since I develop water-quality & hydrodynamics software, I also was concerned with numerical methods issues. This book met my needs. Chapra has a very enjoyable style. I like his sometimes 'anecdotal' style, whereby he gives you historical or background blurbs which help view things in their proper context.

** One of the rare qualities of Chapra's books is to provide both the mathematical modeling theory, and the practical sampling and statistical tools to implement them with real data. This is so often overlooked by other authors.

I look forward to his next book on numerical methods with Matlab & Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Surface Water Quality is "quality" from cover to cover.......2000-05-26

I found this book to be extremely useful. It covers the necessary issues of surface water modeling, such as reaction kinetics, mixed vs non-mixed systems, a variety of possible contaminants and indicators, as well as a variety of surface water body types. Each part of the book is a series of lectures containing theory as well as practical modeling methods. The text is clear and flows well, with occasional comical examples and literary quotes.

                    Book Description

This book is designed to bridge the gap between handbooks and technical literature and is intended to serve the research needs of both academic and industrial scientists and graduate students. It begins with a discussion on reactive extraction systems and provides a state-of-the-art description of phase equilibria in reacting liquid-liquid systems. The following chapter discusses reactive mass transfer with a focus on transfer regimes, surfactant layers, zeta potential and experimental techniques. A brief summary on current developments and not common extraction techniques is also offered.

                      Book Description

Stephen Trudgill presents an internationally authored research-level text, aimed at providing a synopsis of developments in solute modelling in catchment ecosystems over the last ten years. The volume includes particular advances in solute modelling, especially at the catchment scale, emphasising the influences of weathering, ecosystem processes and hydrological processes as well as the application of models and modelling principles. The intended audience for the book is research scientists in cognate fields and postgraduate research workers, although it is especially aimed at those interested in catchment systems. It will also enable specialists to grasp the essentials of topics outside their own field. The book will be of use in a management context as successful water quality management actions are often dependent upon the predictive success of models. It will also show how models can be used to assess the sensitivity of solute production to environmental change and human influence, such as land use change and variation in atmospheric inputs, focussing upon surface catchments rather than groundwater and soil solutes.

Get an international perspective on the latest issues relating to spatial analysis, accuracy in the location and special representation of data and real world features, and emerging standards for digital spatial methods and applications. Twelve peer-reviewed papers cover: Accuracy and Uncertainty in Spatial Data and Analysis • Application of krieging and other geostatistical techniques • Fractal analysis for spatial applications • Difficulty in defining the level of accuracy for environmental and hydrologic data • Spatial variability, uncertainty, and risk for use in decision support systems • Use and application of global positioning systems (GPS) Modeling and Spatial Analysis of Environmental and Hydrologic Systems in Spatial Data Environments • Spatial techniques to model environmental systems • Development of object models for hydrologic systems. • Development of a flood warning system for watersheds in Spain • Modeling the distribution of soil moisture with remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) • Data integration with GIS as a management tool for decision support • Efforts to model surface soil moisture from satellite microwave observations • Use of response units to assess erosion processes in semiarid areas in southern Africa Standardization and Standard Digital Data Sets • Methods, descriptions, and digital data products, such as the watershed boundary standards for the U.S. • Status of standards in use by the U.S. government related to GIS data • Role of other organizations in the development of standards for GIS • Development of standard merged products of satellite imagery and elevation data for natural resource mapping in Canada • Development of a series of standard digital databases, in which U.S. Geological Survey has been particularly active This publication is based on a symposium sponsored by ASTM International in cooperation with the International Commission on Remote Sensing of the International Association of Hydrologic Sciences, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

                          Book Description

The impact of transport on the environment is a major issue of worldwide concern. This important new book presents state-of-the-art contributions on spatial and technological aspects of transport in relation to environmental degradation, together with analysis of sustainable transport policy.

The first part of the book focuses on policy analysis. A sustainable transport strategy should include all elements of the transport sector, transcend the usual time and space constraints and address economic and equity concerns, in addition to the environmental targets it is often designed to meet. The second part concerns technological issues. The authors do not simply describe technological possibilities, but are instead concerned with broader issues such as scenario development and implementation strategies. The third part concerns spatial aspects, including an increasing spatial level in discussing sustainable transport issues, from the local and urban level to global aspects of sustainable transport. Transport and Environment thus offers a multi-disciplinary perspective on the multifaceted field of sustainable transport.

The distinguished array of contributors and broad scope of the work will ensure this book is essential reading for scholars of transport and environmental economics, policymakers and those involved in urban and transport planning.
