Book Description
David Adler (1882-1949) was one of the most important architects designing homes and estates in the United States during a period known as that of the "great American house." Adler's works-which range in date from 1911 to 1949-were truly American, offering an enormous range of stylistic expression on the exteriors and a simpler definition of interiors than traditional European models allowed.
This important book features seventeen homes and one private club designed by Adler, all of which are beautifully reproduced in full-color with newly commissioned photographs by the firm of Hedrich Blessing. Highlights of this volume include the Stuart-style country house in the manner of Sir Christopher Wren, built for Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Crane in Ipswich, Massachusetts; the Celia Tobin Clark residence, in Hillsborough, California, in which Adler used English half-timber construction; and the William McCormick Blair House, built in Lake Bluff, Illinois, a Colonial New England farm house that constituted a new experiment for Adler.
The book also presents examples of Adler's interior designs, which respond to the demands of modern life by featuring both the use of new materials and historical elements or furniture acquired during his European travels.
Other Adler homes featured in this book include:
Mrs. C. Morse Ely House (1915), Lake Bluff, Illinois;
Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Crane House (1925-28), Ipswich, Massachusetts;
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Field House (1925-27), Sarasota, Florida;
Mrs. Celia Tobin Clark House (1929-31), Hillsborough, California;
Mrs. Kersey Coates Reed House (1931-32), Lake Forest, Illinois
This lavishly illustrated book is the catalogue for a major exhibition on the work of David Adler, which will be held at The Art Institute of Chicago from December 6, 2002 to May 18, 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Nice tribute to a master of residential architecture.......2005-01-30
This book does do a commendable job of disecting Adler's major works and the research is quite good, though it could have used more photos. I must stipulate that the photos used are quite good. Note to publisher the cover photo, with Adler's name vertically imbosed cheapened the look of the book, although the back photo was excellent. If you are fan of Adler I recommend this book, but with slight reservations, look at my other reviews to find truely great books on American Master Architects. I'm a tenacious reviewer, but if I say a book is great, I'll bet you will agree. I really do try to write reviews that will help people, not just give them a positive synopsis, these books are expensive and some are great, some are good, like this one, and some are just plain disappointing. Anyway, I really hope this helps you in some way, if not...well this is a minute of your life you will never get back.
An astounding visual and descriptive tour.......2002-11-14
Knowledgeably edited by Martha Thorne, featuring essays by Richard Guy Wilson, Pauline C. Metcalf, and Ghenete Zelleke, and enhanced with color photography by Bob Harr and Hedrich Blessing, David Adler, Architect: The Elements Of Style is an astounding visual and descriptive tour of the unique and influential architecture of David Adler (1882-1949) famous for designing homes and estates in America during the period of the "great American house." His elegant style, blending classical inspiration with a uniquely modern finish that shows through the test of time, is presented through memorable color and black-and-white photographs as well as diagrams and extensively detailed text (beginning with an informative foreword by Robert A. M. Stern) and offers enriched background information as to the creation of David Adler's most well-known masterpieces. David Adler, Architect: The Elements Of Style is very highly recommended for connoisseurs of grand architecture and a core acquisition for professional and academic Architectural Studies reference collections and American Architectural History supplemental reading lists.

Spirit of Nature translated into the Art of the Abstract.......2004-10-27
If you are looking for a watercolor tutorial in botanical painting, wildlife or landscape, walk away. This isn't the focus of "Painting the Spirit of Nature." Author Maxine Masterfield is, instead, taking the artist on a tour of an interior landscape, using the metaphors, symbols and shapes and colors of nature to create abstract or abstracted imagery. Look at the cover picture; the painting could represent boulders or broken rock face, but is in fact an abstract. This is the lesson of "Painting in the Spirit of Nature."
There is a lot about texture, unconventional techniques using things like salt and other methods, how to find imagery in everyday scenes and objects and how to compose a painting. The real value, however, in this book, is in the selection of paintings. You may or may not like them, but if you have been trying to find an "abstract voice"--I'd say this book would be great for you. If you liked "Watercolor Bold and Free", this is along the same vein.
This is not the spirit of nature!.......2002-08-23
I bought this book since the reviews were quite enthusiastic about it. I have more than 50 watercolor books as well as many other art books, and this is just and justly the worst of them all.
It is about experimental painting, that is true, but it is not about "the spirit of nature". Experimental or abstract painting is simply no excuse. The abstract patterns made through various techniques aren't exciting or beautiful and the techniques themselves can be found in various books where they belong - as a small sidenote. The techniques shown aren't useful at all for a watercolor artist wanting to capture nature.
The enthusiastic reviews gave me a diametrically opposite view of this book than what it was. As a "nature" book it belongs in the trashcan.
What I thought about was some loose techniques for creating texture for nature paintings, but that was not the case, it is all about totally abstractism which was not what I was after.
If you are looking for ways of creating abstact patterns, okey buy it, otherwise don't!
Awesome.......2002-04-22
If you are looking for ideas and techniques this is a wonderful book. Very well done.
Fabulous Teacher, Fabulous Art.......2001-05-06
I was lucky enough to have this artist-author as a teacher almost 2 decades ago. I no longer work in this style or medium but when I was working in it, her methods were the most marvelously freeing ones. If you feel constricted with your present results in water color, as if you must "break free" from such rigid control, Maxine is the teacher for you. The art works are totally glorious as well. Many are hers and she uses other artists' work as well. The book has art work on virtually every page. Back when I took her course, I know that her work was also selling for a lot of money to big commercial clients to put in their buildings and to some private homes as well. Thus, she had cracked the commercial barrier too. I applied her techniques in later years to acyrlics and liquid dyes as well and they worked fine there too.
A perennial favorite in my reference library.......2000-04-05
I also frequently recommend this book to other artists, beginning or advanced. I've had this book for years, and am awed everytime I open it up. It's perfect for jumpstarting the creative juices because almost every page contains an inspiring thought, image or technique. Her photos of natural elements, together with paintings by herself and other artists shows everyone how to use nature as a springboard for creativity. You will LOVE this book!

Customer Reviews:
Very Pleasing.......2007-05-01
I bought this book not to color in, but as a source for clear line drawings of flowers to use in other design work. It works very well for that, with nice, unfussy illustrations of the flowers. Just as important as the blooms, the leaves and stems are also accurately rendered. There is very little addition (birds, butterflies, etc.) - that's fine with me, but some users might want a more detailed picture to color. The small colored guide pic's are apparently done in colored pencil, and provide a lot of detail for realistic coloration.
My one reservation is that some of the illustrations don't show the blooms full-on, but only in profile and 3/4 views. I always want to be able to see how the center of a flower is constructed. Overall, though, very nice.
A Gardeners Must Have.......2007-04-11
Whther your thumb is green or black you cannot go wrong with this. I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Great for Elderly or Alzheimers Patients .......2007-03-16
I purchased this coloring book for my grandmother who has Alzheimer's. It helps her feel as if she is accomplishing something and also she is using her mind and hands to stay in the lines. It's an ideal coloring book for anyone who wishes to color like they use to.
Love to color and learn.......2006-11-04
My daughter has enjoyed learning the names of different flowers and then coloring them. She remembers them more because she has a chance to color them. We also use the internet to look up the different flowers and learn more about them and what colors they are. She enjoys this also and it helps her to create her masterpiece.
Garden Flowers Coloring Book.......2002-07-15
Thank you Amazon for carrying a wonderful selection of Stefen Bernath's books!! I use this particular book, by Stefen as a guide for watercolour sketching and painting. Garden Flowers contains a collection of more than thirty common flowers showing detailed shape and colour, including colour guilds that can be referred to for accuracy. An excellent reference book.

Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-01-09
This is a great resource. I'm a graphic designer and have been looking for full color illustrations of flowers and fruit like this for a while. Lots of online stock photo/illustration sites sell similar artwork for anywhere from $75-250 each. Here you get a large variety for under $20.
Flowers & Fruits.......2005-09-12
This is an excellent printing of just what I needed. I use these images for decoupage and they are great!

Pretty as a picture.......2001-09-01
Despite, or perhaps because, the illustrations are somewhat stylised, but beautifully set with foliage and flowers, this book is a classic coffee table book (if the table has strong legs!). It will be purely by accident if it helps you identify birds you see (and will take up your whole knapsack if you took it into the field!) but it is a joy to turn through, sensuously, in front of a log fire, remebering those very days in the field and remembering how long birds have been on earth and how long we have watched them.
And, sacreligious as it may seem, at USD30, buy two and take one apart to frame and line the walls of your study.
A classic in every sense of the word!
Book Description
From the dazzling orange of a Canada Lily to the sunshine yellow of a Prickly-pear, coloring your own field guide is the most enjoable way to learn about wildflowers. Each drawing is accompanied by a brief description that educates as it entertains. Place the new color stickers next to the drawings for a visual reference while coloring. Coloring the drawings helps reinforce the color, image, and shape of each wildflower, improving your memory and perception while offering a pleasant and easy way to learn. Fun for adults as well as children, beginning and experienced naturalists alike.

Great book.......2007-08-07
I have this book. I colored all the pages. It's awesome and you learn anout different and what they specially. I got it from Ceracker Barrel and I now need a new one.
Not definately a big fan and don't want to get this book because NOT up on our western breeds.......2007-03-14
I don't think I'd want to get this book "Horses of the World Coloring Book" by John Green becuase the horses all look alike...from the fiery arabian to the Anglo Arab to the quarter horse and that there is no dished head on the arab, the quarter horse looked like a pony, no BIG rear end...the drafters, and the other European horses probably and maybe looked ok. You could tell this author was definately NOT up on our western breeds! The only horse coloring books by John Green I only like are Wonderful World of Horses Coloring Book and Favorite Horses coloring book and those will be my only two favorites from now on and never Horses of the World Coloring book because it's awful that a Quarter horse looks like a pony with no big rear end and no dished head on the Arabian and I think the price is very low on this book as well, too.
The only horse coloring books by John Green I'll only like are Wonderful World of Horses Coloring Book and Favorite Horses coloring book because those two would be a lot of fun anyway and that's a fair better choice of two.
Beautiful and unique.......2006-11-12
This is a wonderful coloring book for any young person who loves horses and has an artistic bent. I was given this book as a young girl (about 18 years ago) and spent many hours lovingly shading in each detailed illustration. Everytime I look back through it, I'm reminded of the fun I had reading through it and bringing each picture to life with color. I still keep it now after all this time because in coloring book terms, it's quite a work of art.
High Quality Coloring Books for older children.......2006-07-12
My daughter enjoyed the quality of the illistrations of horses. They were very realistic and detailed.
Quality.......2005-12-23
I'm use to my children's jumbo coloring books, with cute, simple drawings and not the best quality pages or covers. This book is a step above the average coloring book. I like the added feature of the small images that show the child the "appropriate" colors. I know my eight-year-old will love this book, and I plan to buy her the other horse coloring books by Dover.
