5 out of 5 stars Lovely book!.......2007-09-25

I have been reading this book for about a couple of months to my 5.5-month-old baby boy. It is one of his favorite books! He loves the colorful animal pictures and especially the velvety feel of the bees. His favorite is the buzzing sound at the end of the book. There is a light sensor on the last page. If there is not enough lighting, the buzzing won't initiate, so sometimes I need to face the page toward the window. My only other complaint is the size of the book, ~7x9 inches. Pictures in each page appeared a bit cramped. Even though it is geared toward ages 3+ year old kids, my baby would benefit greatly from a larger size, 8x12 inches, which is the size of "Five Little Ducklings" by Melanie Gerth.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Read.......2007-07-22

This is the second copy of this book we have purchased. My son read the first one so much the binding fell apart. When my daughter wanted to read it, we decided to buy a new one. We have never had a problem with the "buzzing" as our battery lasted over 2 years and we never replaced it.

MY MIDDLE GRANDSON WOULD NOT SIT STILL FOR 5 MINUTES ONE HE WAS 1 BUT IF YOU PUT THIS BOOK IN FRONT OF HIM HE WOULD SIT THERE FOR 45 MINUTES. THEY LOVE FINDING ALL THE DIFFERENT COLOR BUGS IN THE BOOK. THE FIRST TIME I OPENED IT IT SCARED ME. WHEN YOU GET TO THE END OF THE BOOK IT BUZZES. GREAT BOOK

5 out of 5 stars one of our all time favorites.......2006-04-10

This book was one of my daughter's all time favorites. She got it when she was three. She is ten now and has informed me that I need to put it away with her other baby treasures for safe keeping. We literally spent hours looking for all of the little critters on each page. She would never let me be the one who slipped the honey bee from page to page. We potty trained her with his book. No kidding.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful, fun book that is also a subtle teaching tool.......2004-03-30

This was given to us as a birthday present for my then one-year-old boy. Immediately his brother, 4, commandeered it for himself and spent quite a bit of time that afternoon pushing the cardboard honeybee on her path and through the pages to the other sides to continue. Seeing me do this once was all it took to fascinate them both.

The honeybee, which is stored in a plastic pocket on the cover, starts on page one to follow a path of words that curves and turns across the spread to disappear behind a cleverly disguised cut into the next page. The flowers and objects are identified specifically, like "Iris" and "Cornflower", so kids do learn a little uncommon info for their age. I think that when they try to take over moving the bee for themselves (which is inevitable), they also learn good hand eye coordination skills. Best of all, the words are like a magic path that has direction, pacing and meaning. Clever!

I'm a big fan of children's picture books that are interactive because they work! Kids' attention will be riveted, they love to play with the book even when you're not reading to them, and they develop an understanding and appreciation of books. I remember cherishing Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar book myself at that age because it was just so cool. It made learning easy and fun. This book has a similar appeal, and I would recommend it to anybody whose children respond to that sort of thing.

This book is great fun for my 1 1/2 year old. She loves to maneuver the honeybee through the pages. It is an innovative concept, and it works well. The only problem is that where the honeybee is pushed through the page, the page rips pretty easily. But the honeybee has stood up well.

5 out of 5 stars Busy Bees.......2006-09-29

These bees are too busy to play with their farmyard friends. But as we read we get to work on animal sounds, counting down to just one bee left and we get to (if you have a toddler) hearing the buzzing sound over and over and over. My son loves this book immensely and so far it's been sturdy enough.

5 out of 5 stars Buzz Buzz Fun.......2006-08-14

I bought this book when my daughter was 4 months. It has become her favorite book to read to me and her mom, granted she is 11 months. When we read it to her, she turns pages for us. She loves to flip the pages by herself and naturally loves the Buzz Buzz sound at the end. I recomend this book for any parent.

Happy Reading

4 out of 5 stars Very cool book........2006-05-18

My son, who is not yet 1 1/2, loves Buzz-Buzz, Busy Bees. He likes to look at all the animals, and after we've finished the book he likes to keep opening the back page to hear the buzzing (sometimes he even dances to it). The illustrations are really engaging, and I like the fact that the farmer at the end of the book is female.
I don't like the material that covers the bees--it's similar to velveteen, which gives me goosebumps. Also, I'm a little skeptical about some of the ideas in the book--would a bee want to play with a dog? Would a rooster drink honey? But this kind of silliness is okay, given the format, and the book really is a pleasure to read aloud.

This book presents realistic stories in an easy to read format.
Warm family relationships are apparent and grandma's stories always have a significant lesson for young readers and reminders for older readers. For every choice one makes, whether a careless choice or a careful choice, there are consequences. Love of neighbor in making choices and seeking forgiveness when mistakes and resulting consequences harm others are two themes repeated throughout.

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK if you want "fluff"! My 8 yr.old and I loved this book. We need more books that teach "Bee Obedient, Bee Polite, Bee Content, Loving, Prayerful, Grateful, Truthful," etc. It is a great conversation starter about things that matter in life. It deals with the circumstances of our actions and other issues that can make us better people. But, as I said earlier, "if you want "fluff", don't buy it".

1 out of 5 stars very scary book.......2001-03-02

I was given this book by my grandmother as a child. Nearly thirty years later, I still remember how very scary it was to me. It teaches life lessons with a heavy, heavy dose of guilt. In one story, a little boy does not do the chores his mother wants him to, and goes fishing instead. He comes home to find his mother has done all the chores, and IS NOW DEAD! In another, a little boy does not close the gate as he is asked to, and his little sister gets trampled by horses and is in a wheelchair for life as a result of his irresponsibility. Come on now! I found the book to be traumatizing.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every family with young children!.......1999-07-09

My children adore this book. I recently found there is a sequel entitled, "Another Hive of Busy Bees" -- I can only hope that is more of the same gentle, thoughtful and character-building stories.

5 out of 5 stars A book your children will read again and again.......1998-12-22

In the search for wholesome books to enrich my daughter's library, I, on a wing, ordered this book. We read it together two years ago, a chapter a day. Of all the books on her shelf, this book is the one that she turns to for that familiar relationship between a favorite story and the desire we've all had to actually be in the story.

Don and Joyce spend a summer at their grandparents' farm, learning about life through Grandma's nightly "Bee" stories.

Each tale illustrates a different character trait needing development in the children that day..."Bee Polite" tells the story of two children who learn the sting of this bee as they follow the crowd throwing stones at an elderly lady walking along the road, only to later be introduced to this same lady as their grandmother, whom they've never had the opportunity to meet in person.

"Bee Careful" describes a tree that in its early years of development had a branch tied into a knot by a young boy, unnoticed by the adults until so much time had passed by that the knot could not be untied. Through the details of this story, Don and Joyce learn how listening to the buzz of this bee can help them prevent future trouble by being careful...choosing wisely the words they speak and the actions they take as youngsters.

I highly recommend this book for old and young alike!

    5 out of 5 stars A Happy Little Book.......2005-12-20

An incredibly cute pop-up book about little things that fly and other little things that live in the dirt. It features vibrant, leaping designs and big, bold cutouts that will delight anyone, and, best of all, stand up to multiple readings. I was especially impressed with the book's centerpiece--a pair of earthworms twined around each other in a living maze. Very Busy Bee is part of a charming series of popups covering more bugs, barnyard animals, jungle creatures, and construction vehicles. However, readers should be aware that, rather than being a continuous tale of the friendly firefly or the happy hen, the title refers to the first creature (or truck) featured on the inside.

5 out of 5 stars Great for 18months and older........2003-12-10

I enjoy surfing the net looking for great activities and songs to do with my little ones at my day care. But My sister gave me this book and I am using a lot of the ideas in it. I am going to purchase the book on Spring themes. This book covers several themes during the winter month. From Mice, toys, mittens, snow, hands, feet, cocoa, circles, rectangles, night and day. There are creative, easy songs and finger plays to go with the themes and craft and snack ideas. For the snow theme it suggest putting glue into bowels, providing a large peice of blue paper and white cotton balls and having the kids dip the cotton balls in the glue and sticking them on the paper then there are three songs and three more ideas. followed by a theme on ice and then sledding all together there is close to 60 themes for December, January and February. Each them is covered on two pages. Including Ground hog day, Valentine day and taking care of your body. Very well done for 18 months and up. I think even babies would enjoy the songs and ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Great for children interested in the world around them.......2007-03-19

This book has great imagery, a story-line about a particular busy bee to keep the child's interest from page to page. It was a delight to see specific vocabulary in regard to the life and activities of a bee. Young children will learn the basics of how honey is made, how bees communicate and their general life cycle.

By the way, my 4 year old son loves this book! As most other young children, he has a sense of awe about the world and is full of questions.

        4 out of 5 stars Beekeeper's Nephew.......1999-12-12

I have a 5 year old nephew I see occasionally. He knows I am a beekeeper and is fascinated, bombarding his grandmother with honeybee questions. The rating on this book is level 1 for pre-school and grade 1- Beginning to read. I think this is a little agressive for that level as many of the words are rather specific to the topic and not commonly used by this age children. I think it would be suitable for older or precocious children with a larger vocabulary. The pictures are actual photographs of good quality and dominate the page. The pictures include details of the "stuff" of the interior of the beehive and accurate descriptions. Closeups of grubs and adult honeybees will hold his interest long after the reading has been commonplace.

Life in the Treetops reflects many of the difficulties faced by women scientists in all fields. Margaret Lowman, a field biologist specializing in forest-canopy research, shows how dealing with the emotional challenges is as tough as or tougher than dangling from a precarious perch counting beetles or facing down a deadly sea snake. This chronicle of her adventures (and misadventures) among the treetops encourages readers to understand both the science and the scientist. One can't help but sympathize with Lowman as she struggles to be a good researcher and a traditional rural housewife at the same time, and fails. Luckily, her kids and parents always remain supportive, taking care of the house during her long absences and accompanying her to faraway research stations when possible. Lowman studies small things--leaves and insects, mostly--and getting to them can be tricky. She chronicles the history of forest-canopy research techniques (which have grown apace with her career), starting with simple climbing gear and ending with treetop walkways and giant construction cranes. Life in the Treetops is an engaging look at one woman's struggle to find balance, whether she's high up in a tree or on the ground with her fellow humans. --Therese Littleton

        Book Description

A pioneering tree canopy scientist for more than twenty years, Margaret D. Lowman first gained access to the treetops with ropes and ladders, later a cherrypicker, and recently with such advanced methods as hot-air balloons and treetop walkways. In this absorbing book, Lowman describes her scientific studies in forest canopies around the world and her challenges as a field biologist, wife, and single parent.

4 out of 5 stars My thoughts on this book.......2002-01-02

This unique book is about Margaret Lowman's life as a self-described field biologist who studies the mysteries of forest canopies, one of the last biotic frontiers on Earth. In Life in the Treetops, Lowman is a pioneer canopy scientist she describes the little known worlds of the treetops, their inhabitants, flowers and fruits, growth and mortality, patterns of diversity, and plant and animal interactions. Lowman writes about how, in order with the scientific hypothesis she was focusing on, a different canopy access technique was used. She's particularly good at exposing the life of a field biologist from a woman's perspective, what it was like to cope: with the demands of a challenging career; with marriage to an Australian sheep farmer; with housewifery; with motherhood to two young sons; with conflicting cultural differences about gender roles; and with divorce and single parenthood. Lowman's descriptions of her various arboreal ecological projects were fascinating. She emphasized the pleasures and intellectual rewards of studying the natural world without ignoring the projected vicissitudes of researching in wilderness settings. In the end Lowman is the director of research and conservation at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. This is an inspiring story for everyone, not just for women or those interested in careers in science, but for everyone.

        4 out of 5 stars A young woman's perspective.......2001-10-23

As a young woman who hopes with all her heart and works with all of her passion to be a scientist one day, I recommend this novel without a doubt. Dr. Lowman attacks every issue she faces head on, candidly describing her emotion and scientific endeavors as if the reader is a personal friend. As a female, I myself can relate to her described frustration of being a woman in a primarily male field. Even my closest male friends look at me with doubt and treat my five year love affair (ongoing, of course) with science as a joke simply because I am female (as the butt of their jokes imply). It's wondorous to read of other accounts involving similar emotion. On a scientific note, Dr. Lowman makes no adjustments for fear of the reader who does not care for biology; she writes about science just as she writes about emotion. For that, I urge parents to prod their children to read this memoir, adults to read, and all others to digest.

4 out of 5 stars Margaret Explains It All.......2001-07-10

Margaret Lowman writes candidly about her life... as though we were the closest of friends. I expected her to write about her research, the difficulties of climbing into the rainforest canopies, and her globe trotting. And she did. She also writes of the professional challenges, cultural clashes, and personal problems she encounters as a woman in field biology, and that makes this book something quite special.

ON THE PERSONAL SIDE: Lowman married an Australian, had two children and lived in the outback, while conducting research on the Australian rain forests. On the personal side, she was expected to be a housewife, and mother. Her new Australian husband, and in-laws, did not understand her inner drive to spend time in her work. While clearly her new family did not support her in her work, Lowman persisted and achieved. She also made a decision to accept a teaching position at Williams College back in the US. She packed up the boys, and headed for home. She exchanged her marriage, and the boy's father, for a surprisingly supportive scientific community and her own supportive parents. Lowman tells of her personal life with candor, but without bitterness. While no one could accuse her of having an ordinary life, Lowman's book is also an every woman's story in that she chronicles the kind of day-to-day struggle of professional/career women faced (particularly in the 1970's and 1980's) in balancing career and family.

ON THE PROFESSIONAL SIDE: To help understand the interdependence of the rainforests Lowman mostly studies the small things... leaves, and the insects that eat them. It sounds easier than it is. Most of the leaves to be studied are high up in the canopy of the rain forests. Early in her career, she gains access using ropes and harnesses, and even a cherry picker when she was pregnant; later she has the luxury of using a construction crane, a dirigible, and even a walkway. Lowman loves the forests, and her work. (Her book contains an illustration of her favorite tree, ficus watkinsiana.)

Lowman ends the book telling us that it takes about the "same amount of energy to complain as it does to explain-but the results are incredibly different." Her book explains a great deal. I highly recommend it.

        4 out of 5 stars Well-written account of a life in science.......2001-06-25

Margaret Lowman is a gifted biologist with a knack for finding ways to teach others the importance of her field and the need for conservation. Her adventures range from the humorous to the frightening and are guaranteed to hold the reader's interest. I held off a five-star rating only because I would have liked a little more information on some of the animals she's studied. Her impressions of Nature's little-known and often-overlooked creatures are valuable and fascinating, and I wish more space had been devoted to them. That's a minor quibble, though. As a writer on nature myself, I came away from reading this book with an improved understanding of how complex the "web of life" is, not to mention a determination to get my own children out into the forests more often.

4 out of 5 stars Life in the Treetops.......2001-05-05

Margaret Lowman's story, Life in the Treetops, is an inspiration for young women considering a life in science. She tells how she balanced a career as a field biologist, studying the forest canopy, with being a wife and mother, and eventually a single parent. Her stories of her experiences as a researcher and tree climber in such exotic locals as the Australian outback, Cameroon, Belize and Panama are intermingled with her observations about the inhabitants of these locals, the people she worked with and her sons. Her perseverance in a field dominated by men has given her an interesting perspective about science and life in general.
