              Book Description

Viruses transmitted by nematodes are responsible for many economically important diseases of crops. Thus, when in the late 1950s, this mode of disease propagation was demonstrated by proof of the transmission of grapevine fanleaf disease by Xiphinema index, it marked the start of a significant and fruitful period of research. Since that time, however, numerous reviews have been published on different aspects of nematode transmission of plant viruses and the nematode transmitted viruses themselves. However, until now there has been a lack of any source which draws all of this research together. This book fills this need by providing a valuable overview of the last forty years of research into the transmission of viruses by nematodes, as well as setting the agenda for future investigations. This book is an important resource for all crop protectionists, nematologists, and plant virologists.

                  Book Description

Nematodes can inflict severe damage on crops, making it important to identify and control them early in the crop cycle. This is particularly true with the growing trend toward integrated crop management. Plant Nematode Control covers the world's most important nematode pests. It presents the full range of control techniques, discusses identification methods, and reviews key aspects of nematode bionomics and biology. Organized by type of pest, it contains numerous line drawings and photos, and its index gives quick access to information for a particular crop. An essential resource for students and researchers in crop protection and plant pathology, this practical volume will also prove useful to farmers and farm advisors.

                    Book Description

Nematodes are major pests of a number of temperate crops and can cause significant economic losses to farmers. This book provides a comprehensive account of such parasites, with chapters focusing on nematode pests of the main crops of importance in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Eleven chapters thus consider: potatoes, sugar beet, vegetable crops, oilseeds and grain legumes, cereals, grassland and forage crops, forest trees, deciduous fruit and nut trees, soft fruits and grapevines, ornamental and bulb crops, and mushrooms and greenhouse crops. There are also six further chapters on more general issues such as extraction and identification of nematodes, modelling population dynamics and yield losses, molecular aids to diagnosis, use of nematodes in biological control of insects, quarantine, and cellular and molecular approaches to control. Written by leading authorities from the USA, UK, Canada, France, Netherlands, Bolivia, Australia and New Zealand the book overall is a definitive reference work for plant pathologists in general, and nematologists in particular.

Host plant resistance is one of the cornerstones upon which integrated pest management is based. Improved pest management is an essential element of sustainable agriculture. Resistance to nematodes is currently under utilized particularly in developing countries. This practically oriented book, describing methods for evaluating the resistance and tolerance of plant cultivars to parasitic nematodes, provides specific instructions on all phases of resistance screening. With the current emphasis on decreasing the use of chemical nematicides, this book is a timely addition to the subject. timely addition

                      Book Description

Centrosomes play an integral role in the growth of cells and the ultimate development of many animals, and sometimes plants. In addition to the normal growth of cells, centrosomes can also play a key role in the spread of cancer and are of increased interest to both the genetics and oncology communities. Volume 49 of Current Topics in Developmental Biology will present all known research surrounding the centrosome, across a variety of systems, will be well referenced, and speculate where the research is headed.

                      Key Features
                      * Discusses centrosomes and cancer, centrosomes and early development, and molecular biology of the centrosome
                      * Heavily illustrated, with many color figures
                      * Chapters written by international leaders in the field

5 out of 5 stars THE ultimate centrosome bible!.......2000-11-11

This book is by far the most up to date and comprehensive treatment of centrosomes and centrioles available. Anyone interested in the cytoskeleton or cell biology would do well to get a copy of this book. Chapters are all written by leaders in the field, and provide both an excellent overview of current research as well as an entry point into the extensive primary literature. The book is well organized and tightly focused, a tribute to the fine work of its editor Robert Palazzo. This is destined to be a classic for many years to come!

                              Book Description

This book provides a concise yet comprehensive account of animal cell cultures: how they are used in cell growth assays, how to interpret results, and how to avoid potential problem areas when using these commonly employed research tools. Cell Growth and Division furnishes laboratory
protocols for using a wide range of animal cell lines. The book gives readers full coverage on measuring parameters of growth, mouse embryo cells, C3H 10T1/2 and NIHT3T cell lines, human leukemia cells, and normal human epidermal keratinocytes and mesothelial cells. This complete guide also offers
convenient, all-in-one coverage of cloned T cell proliferation, muscle cell cultures, human diploid fibroblasts, cell synchronization, and BAL B/c3T3 cells. Laboratory investigators familiar with only one cell line will particularly appreciate the depth of coverage, which will make it possible to
choose the line best suited to a given investigation. guidance on how they are carried out, how to interpret results, and how to avoid potential problem areas when using these commonly employed research tools.

The latest theories and results on the early effects of radiation on DNA are presented and summarised in this text. Contributions are made by leading radiation physicists, chemists and biologists. All three subject areas have shown great advances in recent years, e.g. the computer codes and Monte Carlo calculations used by physicists, the deeper understanding of free radical intermediates by chemists, and the techniques of molecular biology. The reader will gain an insight into the different scientific languages and approaches used by physicists, chemists and biologists in the understanding of the effects of radiation on living matter.

                                  Book Description

The last ten years have witnessed a remarkable increase in our awareness of the importance of events subsequent to transcriptional initiation in terms of the regulation and control of gene expression. In particular, the development of recombinant DNA techniques begun in the 1970s provided powerful new tools with which to study the molecular basis of control and regulation at all lev- els. This up-to-date guide discusses the post-transcriptional processes controlling and regulating gene expression in eucaryotes and procaryotes. The topics covered include transcriptional (anti)termination, mRNA stability, anti-sense RNA, translational control and translational fidelity. An understanding of these mechanisms is an essential requirement for the optimisation of gene expression in various biotechnological applications.

                                    Book Description

This book provides both basic aspects and the latest findings in the molecular and cellular biology of malignant tumors. The focus is on the mechanisms by which normal and neoplastic cells proliferate, differentiate and undergo apoptosis. The differentiation of hemopoietic, epithelial and neuronal cells is treated with respect to growth factors, signal transduction, transcription factors, and genes regulating the cell cycle and the commitment to maturation. The role of oncogenes in neoplastic cell growth and cell death is also covered. The book deals with the regulation of globin gene expression by the LCR locus and the mechanisms of RNA stability for iron-binding and other proteins. The induction of differentiation of neoplastic cells as an alternative approach to cancer therapy is discussed.
