Book Description
Of the indisputably great figures in 20th-century architecture, Alvar Aalto is in many ways the most humane, the least rigid, the most relevant to our contemporary sensibility and the emerging future. This sumptuous book offers a thorough study of an innovative and prolific master, whom Frank Lloyd Wright termed a genius. This fresh, penetrating examination of Aalto's work and influence includes essays by five notable critics and historians. Some 50 of Aalto's projects--houses, town halls, cultural institutions, factories, furniture and glass designs, and regional plans--from all periods of his extraordinarily productive career are illustrated and described, using much previously unpublished and newly photographic material. This book was published to accompany a 1998 retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

excellent.......2007-05-07
aalto is the master, and this book prove it. Now days with the sustainble issue everywhere this architect raises from the grave, almost a century ahead of his time the finland master takes over with the holistic aproach to the discipline.
More than just the standards.......2000-07-28
This is a fabulous book for real students of modernism. This monograph goes beyond the handful of buildings we're used to seeing by this great architect. Aalto appears to be getting his just rewards these days as more and more of us return to his work.

Book Description
"The form is a mystery that eludes every definition."Alvar Aalto
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was not only influenced by the landscape of his native country, but by the political struggle over Finland's place within European culture. After early neoclassical buildings, Alvar Aalto turned to ideas based on Functionalism, subsequently moving toward more organic structures, with brick and wood replacing plaster and steel. In addition to designing buildings, furniture, lamps, and glass objects with his wife Aino, he painted and was an avid traveler. A firm believer that buildings have a crucial role in shaping society, Aalto once said, "The duty of the architect is to give life a more sensitive structure."
Customer Reviews:
Dry, but an inexpensive introduction.......2007-09-22
I love Aalto's work, but this book was just dry.
I give it 3.5 only because it's meant to be an inexpensive introduction to Aalto's work, and it is inexpensive..but the writing is just dry. You really get nothing from the articles about the buildings..but it is a nice intro to the architect's life and it does showcase a few of his best works...albeit in a dry manner..
If you aren't really interested in his work, this is perfect for you.
But if you want a decent look into some of his buildings and materials and philosophy, then your going to have to splurge a little

Alvar Aalto: Through the Eyes of Shigeru Ban
ASIN: 3775715975
Release Date: 2005-07-15 |
Book Description
In addition to being the most important Finnish architect of the 20th century, Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976) was also one the most noteworthy furniture designers of the modern era. His complete system--including stools, chairs, armchairs, and tea trolleys--is characterized by curving line formations that were considered exemplary. As early as 1938, Aalto's work was acquired by New York's Museum of Modern Art. His bentwood Paimio chair is celebrated in a family of furniture design that includes such luminaries as Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Charles Eames. In collaboration with his first wife, Aino Marsio, Aalto also designed organic, floral forms in glass. Their Savoy vase of 1936, created for the hotel of the same name, is legendary, and their group of bowls designed to be combined in a formation called the Aalto Flower has often been compared to the sculptures and paintings of classical modernism. This essential publication presents the pioneering furniture, glass objects, and lamps of Alvar and Aino Aalto in a well-edited selection of photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketches.

Book Description
This book is a unique comparative study of two of the greatest figures in modern architecture - Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. By assessing the historical, personal and intellectual influnces of their attitudes to nature and the creative direction of their work, this study offers a new understanding about the diversity at the heart of their modernism.
Through an analysis of the architects' own writing about their ideas and philosophies, a better understanding is gained of their ideas for urban living and by looking at their most widely known work, the authors analyse the architects' intentions to build nature into the heart of their architecture. The authors argue that there are many similarities between the attitudes towards nature held by Le Corbusier and Aalto, and that these similarities had an important place in the generation of their architecture.
Customer Reviews:
nature and obscuratism.......2003-10-05
This is a strange book. Two architects from the height of modernism, one a half generation older than the other other. First there's Le Corbusier, THE man responsibe more than any other for changing the direction of architecture in the 20th century. A visionary. An idealist. Uncompromising. Brutal. An individualist. And then we have his half-mentor, the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto - who has just a handful of buildings outside his own country and came to prominance for a hospital and a library design in his own country at the height of Modernism (the CIAM conferences), and was championed by its highly influential 'official historian' Sigfried Giedion. And what do these 2 have in common apart from the latter being influenced by the former? That is, Aalto follwed Le Corbusier but corrected his more zealous ideas, appropriating them for a more organic line of design. The 2 authors put it down to God and nature! What an audacious reductionism! Neither architect was religious. Le Corbusier may have originally been from the mountains of Switzerland, but reduced nature to numbers. Aalto was from a rural country -period. And what basis do the authors use to make their claims? Psychoanalysis! They had problems with their mothers and wives. Well what male creative mind didn't?
Sadly most books on Aalto are coffee-table jobs - and this one is certainly not one of those. And there is yet to be a book on Le Corbusier not written by one of his apologists - and this one is no different. Thankfully, at least, this book is a serious, brave effort to say something deep and meaningful about these 2 architects. But it gets bogged down in its highly questionable methodology.

Modern Architecture: A Critical History (World of Art)
ASIN: 0941533352 |
Book Description
This is a much needed and lively study of the still insufficiently known Finnish modern master Alvar Aalto, whose sensitive and increasingly revelant architectural legacy will surely only increase in stature as the years unfold.--Kenneth Frampton
Customer Reviews:
The only one out there..........2001-10-09
The fact that "Alvar Aalto: A Critical Study" is one of very few texts written in English about the under-represented architect gives this book a higher rating. I don't believe that the author is a native English speaker, as I found the text to be quite rough, especially compared to the poetics of Spiro Kostof. The publisher had good reason to take this book out of print. Then again, architects can not write, so...

Customer Reviews:
It's a good book but you'll need other books to round it out!.......2007-02-15
I've found this book to be very helpful as a reference but I recommend other books to round this book out such as Preston Blair's Cartoon Animation, Timing for Animation, and Osamu Tezuka's Animation Books(mainly if you're interested in doing anime style animation) This books does as one reviewer put it touches subjects briefly. Even so I found the tips on simplifying muscle groups and facial animation to be helpful. The artwork is more sophisticated than the dated Preston Blair book. This book even shows techniques such as the double take and character speed blurs. Overall this book is still useful but not without the other books I recommended.
A Fun Book for Anyone.......2000-09-01
I really enjoyed How to Draw Animation. It covered a wide range of topics from the basics, to creating your own characters, to making your characters walk and run, to the animation process. I think this book is a good guide to animation for anyone; whether it's just a hobby or a possible career interest. The book is brimming with beautiful illustrations and clear instructions. Anyone who loves animation should go out and buy this book.
WARNING: This Book is For The Little Kiddies.......2000-04-30
This book is not for people who are interested in becomingserious animators. The book seems to be geared towards children whoare interested in how animation works. So if you are a seriousanimation student I would have to warn you to stay clear of this book. However, this is a good book to give the little kiddies on how animation works. On the bases of it being a Childrens book about animation I would have to give it 5 stars. Since I am sort of an animator in training I would have to give it 2 stars for content. Why? You ask because the content is very brief and does not go into much detail. ...
Should be called: A Very Brief Introduction to Animation.......1999-12-09
I was extremely disappointed in this book. It has very little real content and the book only touches very briefly on many topics. The concepts contained in the book could have been written on 3 sheets of paper. My guess it is written for children to see some of the animation concepts
A great book that explains all areas of animation........1999-07-04
Christopher Hart greatly portrays the art of animation in this wonderful book. It helps begginers understand how to design your characters and what their standouts should be. He explains in great detail how to express your characters emotions through looks and actions. An interview with Roger Allers is included which gives young begginers great advice and encourangement on achieving their goals. This book is great for peoples who are looking to start a career in animation.

Book Description
Today there is a great and growing interest in 'adult' animation, such as The Simpsons, South Park, Wallace & Gromit and Beavis & Butthead. For every two or three people who enjoy watching animated films there's at least one other who wants to know how it's done and how to do it. Many of those who enjoy cartoon drawing also want to know how to take their drawings a few steps further - in other words, how to make them move. There are very few basic books on drawing animated cartoons around.
