fascinating information.......2000-11-27
I don't know how much of this information I will actually USE, but I was fascinated by the number and variety of natural,non-prescription products available and their specific uses. Of course, I would do additional research and follow up on the apparently excellentreferences in this book before using any of the products, but there is an enormous wealth and variety of information in this book. It appears to be well researched.
Broad but Shallow Survey.......2000-10-30
They cover a lot of ground but don't really seem to understand what they're talking about. For example, l-arginine is covered but they fail to mention that it may be most useful to vegatarians who may lack this amino acid found largely in meat diets. What really disappointed me was a lack of convincing first-hand discussions and a healthly skepticism. I'd expect anyone who recommended a love potion to have least tried it themselves! There is no clue that they have done so. They should have given the reader a better, more realistic idea of what to expect. Take yohimbe, for example. It's a very strong herb that works but with significant downsides- one does not come away with an understanding of the complexity of the experience. There are better books on the subject!
Lack of credibility a serious flaw in such a book.......2000-09-28
Neither author evidently has any professional degree or apparent qualification to write a scientific book. I think that most readers would find them to be considerably more credible if they had such a degree, especially in view of the fact that Morgenthaler and Simms frequently foray onto (and beyond) the fringes of scientific knowledge. Such speculation would perhaps be tolerable if it were being espoused by someone who had a solid base of scientific training who had very sound reasons for conjecturing in this manner; it is difficult if not impossible for a reader who has no scientific background to judge whether or not the speculations of authors who have no scientific training are credible. The cover art and one of the fonts used in the text of this book can be best described as comical; they further detract from the credibility of the book.
WOW - HOT STUFF!.......1999-11-12
John Morgenthaler and Mia Simms did a great job with the Smart Guide to Better Sex. This Fascinating and easy-to understand books provides convinving scientific evidence about those dietary supplements that'll help lift your libido. A must read for anyone who wants to put more zing into his or her sex life
An excellent resource!.......1999-11-12

HELP!.......2007-03-05
Having read the other two reviews, we are now stumped as to what to do next. We have no agar at home as suggested in the first review and we, like the others, immediately got a hard lump of gelatin. I think the proportions are off...perhaps 1/4 tsp. of gelatin to 1/3 cup of water? Wish the SmartLab folks published a suggestion somewhere....we may fiddle around a bit to see if we can get the right mixture...VERY frustrating!
Bacteria Farm - Bad news, good news.......2006-09-17
The BAD: Well, we had the exact same experience as the previous reviewer. We tried several batches and ended up with semisolid glop immediately upon removing the heat. The "recipe" must have wrong proportions.
The GOOD: So, with frustrated parents and kids, I remembered high school bio, and nutrient agar. Hey, we had this nice kit with petri dishes, neat book, an experiment plan, etc. Why waste it? A quick search on the internet got a quick 'n' dirty recipe for nutrient agar, which worked like a charm. Nice and pourable and smooth. The trick with agar is that it melts at near water boiling point, but doesn't "re-gel" until much cooler, giving you plenty of time to cool it then pour it.
Here's a short version: you will need lowfat or fat-free chicken broth, and agar. For agar, we found it at a health food store, as "Agar-agar". Follow the directions on the pack - powdered agar is probably 1/2 teaspoon per 1/3 cup broth, flakes more like 1 tsp per 1/3 cup. We got agar flakes, so here's what I did:
Measure 2/3 cup chicken broth into a saucepan. While COLD (before heating), stir in 2 teaspoons agar flakes. Now, heat the broth+agar to boiling over medium heat, stirring occasionally, then reduce and simmer about 4-5 minutes. Then, let it cool 6, 7, 8 minutes or so, not too long. I poured it into a pyrex cup with a spout and filled the dishes from that. Came out like a professional lab! Was set well within an hour.
The UGLY: we hope to get nice yukky colonies out of this.
Still Trying to Get the Kit Started :(.......2006-06-29
I was excited when we got our kit, because I thought that this would be a neat project for my girls, ages 9, 8, 6 1/2. I took out the items and arranged them as the instructions said. Then I got the small saucepan as the directions instructed and carefully followed how it told me to boil the water and add the gelatin.
My first hint of trouble was when the gelatin didn't dissolve in the boiling water like it said. Instead, I got one giant lump of gelatin. Undeterred, I put my 16 years of cooking experience to use and tried using a wisk to wisk it smooth. I accomplished several lumps as I tried to salvage the gelating with more boling water and a fast hand. ...no luck. I got lumpy gel at one point and decided that was the best I was going to get, so I let it cool for a minute before I poured it into the dishes. (I didn't want to pour boiling hot gel into the dishes and crack them.)
I literally waited 1 min before checking the gel, and it was solid. Hot, solid gel in the pan not going anywhere. According to the directions, you let it cool for 10 min before pouring. According to my spatula in the lump of gel, I had "gel on a spatula".
After shaking it loose, peeling it, and scraping it, I managed to get the gel back into the pan. "Okay, one more try," I thought as I put it in the microwave in a dish to see if I could take a small time out to relax since I was now very frustrated. In the meantime, my 3 girls kept coming in, "Hey, Mom! Is that the bacteria?" "Is it ready YET?" "When will it be done?"
By now I was not feeling very excited about this project. Needless to say, I am sitting here taking my time out as my girls are poking at a lump of gelatin. I am wondering if the author, Luann Columbo, TRIED this project before writing about it. I am wondering if Smart Lab was smart enough to make sure this worked before publishing it. I know that I am a fairly intelligent person who is pretty good at following directions, and I cannot figure out how to get the gelatin to work so we can start the bacteria farming.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good help for a struggling bio student!.......2001-09-08
I purchased this book last year on my friend's advice. For certain areas of study, I found it helpful in explaining terms and processes, but at other times I found in undetailed and in lack of substantial information. Before all my tests, I cross-referenced my textbook and this book, and it was usually helpful in these situations. Don't buy this book and think that it's gonna substitute your textbook, though! It just makes Bio a little more student-friendly by using cute terms, puns, and cartoons. It was very helpful with the digestive system and the complicated process or photosynthesis. Overall, it's a somewhat usefull book--but not the best.
Good for a reveiw or intro.......2000-03-26
This book can be used as an introduction to biology, or serve as a review. It is written in an easy to understand way that is suitable for all ages. It is a great companion to your Biology textbook. My only compliant is that it doesn't go into detail about many subjects it covers(e.g. endocrine system, nervous system). You just get the basics from this book.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A356624. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The effect of magnetogasdynamic (MGD) interactions on flow acceleration and thrust in a scramjet accelerator/nozzle are examined numerically at a free-stream flight condition of Mach 8. The parameters of conductivity pattern and load factor are varied in both inviscid and viscous flow regimes with the intent of increasing axial force exerted on the flow through a scramjet accelerator. The numerical code solves the Navier-Stokes equations with additional source terms for the MGD forces and energy interactions. An accelerating Lorentz force is applied to the flow resulting from a constant magnetic field and an electric field produced by two continuous side wall electrodes. The specific thrust across the accelerator/nozzle is improved in the MGD solutions over the non-MGD solutions when the load factor is increased and an electron beam type ionization pattern is used. The largest increase in specific thrust is observed in viscous and inviscid flow regimes with a load factor of 1.8 producing 226% and 154% thrust increases, respectively. Flows showing increases in specific thrust with higher load factors also show significant increases in temperature due to the energy interaction term.
