4 out of 5 stars All you need to know to start your own compost.......2007-08-26

I must say that I knew most of the stuff contained in the book, since the web contains a LOT of information. Nevertheless, the online info is quite dispersed. Here you can have all the knowledge in one book. Also, I did not give it 5 stars, because I think it still lacks a bit of professionalism; the author indeed knew a lot from decades for worm composting, but still, a lot of her knowledge was empiric and seems unsure of some of the causes. For instance, she emphasizes a lot on cold climates and gives little info on hot climates.

5 out of 5 stars Good Instructions.......2007-07-04

This book had very compete instructions on the worm composting system. In fact, it was so good, that after reading it, I decided that the amount of care they would need was more than I wanted to take on.

3 out of 5 stars Recycling to the Max.......2007-06-09

More and more people are developing an interest in non-toxic methods of horticulture and agriculture. Not only that, but the limitations of landfills, the expense of fossil fuels, and the growing body of evidence showing a relationship between human activity and global warming is leading us to consider the wisdom of recycling. Everything. So here we are with a natural, inexpensive method of enriching our soil, and making it disease and pest resistant. This book is a great introduction to the topic of vermiculture. It may take a while before you actually get up the courage to do it, because the book does not adequately dramatize and address the fears and revulsions most people have to rotting, decomposition, and the like. But still, it's a good book.

4 out of 5 stars Hurray for Worms.......2007-03-09

This book is very informative. My only negative comment is that sometimes the information is hard to find when going back for reference.

I've had my worms for 3 days now and a few have escaped. Overall they seem happy to eat the food I've put in the home I made for them, but plastic tubs the size and shape that she recommends are pretty impossible to find. I don't know if this is why some of them are trying to leave. I hope to get an upgrade in worm housing for an upcoming birthday and perhaps this will eliminate the wanderlust some of them are feeling.

4 out of 5 stars How I rate "Worms Eat My Garbage" by Mary Appelhof.......2007-01-04

This is a great book! Not only was it easy to read, I found everything I needed to know and more. The book is filled with a nice blend of scientific information presented with a light-hearted often amusing approach.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the environment.......2007-07-25

Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.

5 out of 5 stars I now have a composting toilet behind the house.......2007-06-21

This was our primary source material for building and maintaining our composting toilet. Works great, saves on water, makes for good plant food, and only smells like sawdust inside.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-05-12

This book combines humor, biology, humor, facts, humor, and specific instructions. Did I mention humor? ;-)

It is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author points out that we are one of the few countries that defecate in our drinking water.

We now have two composting toilets. The one we spent over a $1000 for before we bought the book and the $50 one we built after we bought the book. Guess which one is easier to deal with?!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2007-03-12

Wonderful book that I wish everyone would read. Great information.

1 out of 5 stars Insightful and well grounded book.......2007-03-10

The author created a masterpiece with this book, combining his vast experience of producing humanure with scientific insight, and great humor which made the book fun to read. I'm convinced that composting manure is the safest way to safely deal with our own excrement. Our society has got to be crazy to be flushing this immensely valuable resource to be dealt with later as it ends up polluting our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. I highly recommend this book to any concious reader who would like to greatly reduce their impact upon this earth.

There have been many articles over the years about the benefits of composting for gardeners, but living in the city without a yard, this reviewer never really thought it was something that would apply to me with my handful of flower boxes and potted plants outside. Joke's on me! This book tells you everything you need to know about composting and household refuse, and most importantly, how to get STARTED, and will be enough to convince you to finally get organized and go for it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for beginners.......2004-11-14

Earlier this summer I developed an interest in gardening, and especially the at-home composting. I found that this book was recommended to me more than any other.

I picked it up at my local library and was surprised at how thorough it was. After all, who knew that there were so many methods to composting?

This book helped me to quickly and easily set up my first compost pile, which is coming along great. It even has tips for indoor composters!

5 out of 5 stars This book is like having a neighbor show us how to compost........1998-11-25

How do we demystify the simple act of home composting? This easy to read book is the next best thing to having a helpful neighbor show us how to compost. During my past 10 years as a compost evangelist, I have conducted home composting workshops for thousands of people. Backyard Composting is often distributed by sponsoring agencies for public education and included with the purchase of a compost bin. I like the way this book combines basic how-to's and a holistic perspective of how compost fits in to the notion of sustainability, recycling, and permaculture.

When I first heard that the Worm Queen in Kalamazoo (Mary Appelhof) had published a kids' book on vermicomposting, my reaction was cautious. Last year someone sent me one that was just too cute--and inaccurately showed red wigglers with eyes!
Hurrah for Compost, By Gosh!--it's just right! It combines charm with accuracy and clear, brief instructions for a parent who wants to say, "Yes!" to the child who begs, "Mom, can we have worms composting in our house?"

4 out of 5 stars A photo album of the night sky.......2006-06-08

This was a great idea-- a book of photographic maps covering the entire sky. I purchased my copy from another website for much less than it was sold here.

The book could have been improved if it had closeup maps enlarging parts of the sky which contain many objects-- even individual constellations such as Cygnus, Orion, Sagitarius, and Virgo, which contain many galaxies, clusters, and other objects of interest to the observer. The wide field photos simply can't show everything of what the sky has to offer.

Still, this is a unique atlas and deserves a place in every amateur astronomer's library. It is the perhaps the only photographic atlas now available which shows many of the stars visible to the naked eye and in binoculars.

4 out of 5 stars A new perspective on star atlases.......2001-05-01

There are no errors in the plotting of any of the objects shown in this star atlas. Why? Because all the maps are photographs! Each map consists of an unmarked photograph, a black and white copy of the photograph marked with star names and other useful landmarks, and a text description of many of the interesting objects on the map.

The authors have made a supreme and largely successful effort to calibrate the colors and scale to match human perception of the night sky. A few notable nebulae and stars appear different in the atlas than what we would actually see due to the differing sensitivities of film and human eyes to certain wavelengths of light. Also, the limiting magnitude of the maps correlates closely with what binoculars can see, not what the human eye can see. Consequently, sometimes the sheer overload of stars and objects visible on the map can be confusing.

All 88 constellations are covered, some on several photographs. Because each map covers such a large area of the sky, many of the deep sky objects noted in the text are difficult to pick out. Also, it seems that for some maps the text was written for earlier or later exposures than what was actually published. This is evident after looking for variable stars mentioned as "bright" in the text that are not even present on the photograph!

Overall, a great work but no substitute for a "real" star atlas like Sky Atlas 2000. A bit expensive for its usefulness, but obviously a labor of love for the authors and great for casual naked-eye or binocular stargazing.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ATLAS BUT ONE GLARING IMPERFECTION........1997-12-15

The book is generally awesome. The entire sky is photographeddown to 8th magnitude (meaning you need binoculars to see them all inthe sky) stars. Typically each full-page photo has three back-up pages including narrative and a corresponding chart which identifies all the interesting objects. Now here's where the book is frustrating: Pages 14 through 19 contain ultra wide angle photos which together DO NOT cover the entire sky. Also, these ultra wide angle photos are miniaturized and don't get the same treatment as the photos in the rest of the book. The result is a beautiful book that shows a lot of "trees", elating amateur astronomers, but which does not show "the forest". Beginner astronomers who want to quickly, photographically see the relative positions of constellations must turn elsewhere.
