Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best and Most Comprehensive.......2005-03-27

Absolutely the most comprehensive book on driving horses available. A "must have" text for the beginning and experienced driver. Focusing mainly on the workhorse vs. the pleasure driving horse, Lynn does outline the differences and explains the merits of both disciplines. He has served as an inspiration and an absent mentor through the vehicle of this book. Mr. Miller demonstrates how the horse can be not only a companion and a playmate but also a practical, functional part of our modern life. I hope to do "all that" and then some!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2002-05-08

Don't know how I missed finding this book for so long, but I'm sure glad I finally did. It's incredible how much useful information is packed into this one book. Breeds, feeding, care, harnessing, working..... It's all in there! And even an experienced draft horseman (or at least I thought I was) can learn a lot from this book. I'm looking forward now to buying more of Mr. Miller's books.

5 out of 5 stars "The Draft Horse Bible".......1999-08-15

This book has been around for a while, and I believe we are on the 3rd copy in use at our farm since Dad bought one in the early 80's. There is just a whole lot of information to be found within it's covers- Breeds of Draft Horses, Feeding, Management, Equipment, and that all-important bond between a "teamster" and the team. Not just for the newbie also, as there is a lot of suggestions which I am sure would help experienced horse folks. Lots of good illustrations and pictures- Thanks Lynn!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Really a must.......2007-09-21

The first edition went through 19 different printings, now this is the updated version. It talks about choosing your workhorse, breeds, feeding, harnessing in details, rigging, barns, cost, many tips to avoid a miserable experience with your horse team. I'm new to horse logging, but I read that even experimented teamsters can enjoy the book. I really feel that I know now what I have to do to become a real teamster.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book for all horsenuts!!!!.......2001-11-30

This a really cool book! I read it from cover to cover. I learned stuff about horses that I never knew and learned about breeds of horses that I never knew existed! This a good book for beginner horsenuts.

5 out of 5 stars DK Handbooks: Horses.......2001-07-28

I have been taking riding for two years.Just a couple of days ago my instructor said I was the smart intellect of my age group at the barn.I think getting this book really helped. It covers a lot of breeds and information on them. This book is great so if your horse crazy I would reccomend getting this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Breed Identification and History.......2000-12-27

I am so glad that I purchased this book. I needed a reference guide to help me identify different breeds of horses and ponies for the Photo Model Horse Shows that I have been participating in. Since I will eventually judge a show, I needed to be prepared to classify horse breeds from the photograph entries that will be sent to me. It is easy to read, the photographs are lovely, and there were only a few breeds not listed. Good job!

3 out of 5 stars Well..........2000-07-25

The pictures are nice. But otherwise this is just your average guidebook to horses. The information is easy to understand and some of it, like the heights of horses, is represented visually. But if you are looking to know a little bit about a lot of breeds, this would be a good book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2000-02-20

I have been riding for ten years and still look back on this book to brush up on my horsemanship! I would recommend it to anyone who is beginning riding or is just getting a horse to have at home. The only thing missing from this book is riding information. It covers many breeds and why they are signifigant, and beginners horsemanship.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Equine Veterinarian Manual.......2007-01-06

I really liked the first 2 sections, Keeping your horse healthy and the Anatomical Index of Diseases. I wish the A-z sections describing different disease was a little more in-depth. Its a little more general than I wanted but still a very very knowledgable book.

5 out of 5 stars A Horse Lovers Must.......2000-08-11

This book is very detailed with diseases, illnesses, cut, fractures, snake bites and more. I like to take care of my horse when I can and not take her to the vet except after she foals. I like to give the shots and do what I can. This book is very detailed and very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Equine Veterinary Manual.......2000-05-12

This is a great book. Its packed with information to help you with basic horse care and to identify and treat numerous injuries and ailments. It has lots of pictures color pictures and it organizes the information in an easy to read format. I would recommend it.

                Book Description

This new series is designed especially for practical amateur astronomers who not only want to observe, but want to know the details of exactly what they are looking at. Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, and the only one with a spectacular ring system that is easily visible from Earth. Saturn is a gas-giant, a huge world dominated by its rings and a retinue of moons. It is probably the most commonly observed and imaged planet for amateur astronomers, because it is always changing - the moons move visibly in the course of an hour, the weather systems on the planet change, and the orientation of the ring alters this way and that.

The concept of the book - and the series - is to present an up-to-date detailed description (part one); and then (part two) to consider how best to observe and record the planet, its moons and its ring system successfully.

"Saturn and How to Observe It" is a mine of information for all levels of amateur observers, from the beginner to the experienced.

                Book Description

In the ten years since this award-winning book was originally written by Michael Porcellino, the field of astronomy and its discoveries has grown by leaps and bounds. From the astounding images sent back by the Hubble Space Telescope, to the bright comet Hale-Bopp from the fleet of Martian probes, to the long-distance explorations of the Moon, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn--the universe has become more accessible than ever. And thanks to this revised and thoroughly updated new edition by astronomer and science writer, Patricia Barnes-Svarney, anyone with an interest can delve into its wonders. From the very close up to the far reaches of space, THROUGH THE TELESCOPE presents a uniquely "user-friendly" view of the universe, and offers both novice and advanced amateur astronomers some of the best tools available to watch the nighttime skies. You’ll learn all about: * Setting up a good, user-friendly telescope system * How to look at the universe in order to really see it * Upgrading your telescope for peak performance * How to spot a star cluster, a nebulaÖeven a supernova * Forming your own network of amateur astronomers. Complete with a web site appendix and fully updated charts on eclipses and planetary oppositions well into the year 2000, this edition of an acclaimed book will be an invaluable users guide for aspiring astronomers entering the new millennium.

                Customer Reviews:

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.......2002-02-01

This is an excellent guide for the amateur astronomer, with copious information on both what to look at in the sky and what to buy to do so, including both binoculars and telescopes. It has copious information on every aspect of skywatching, down to the best filters to view the various planets through. It's very supportive of amateur astronomy, consistently pointing out the contributions that amateurs have made and continue to make to the science (one of the few sciences where this is still possible).

Quibbles: a few formatting problems, where the formatting notation shows up instead of italics or whatever was intended. And they repeat the urban legend about Galileo going blind from observing the sun (though admittedly I just recently found out that this is mistaken).

Other than that, it's an excellent book, though more of a reference than a "sit-down-and-read" book, which is what I did with it, at least for now.

Meanwhile, I wonder if some of the other reviews (below) apply to the earlier edition of the book, since I did not encounter the same problems.

1 out of 5 stars A poor excuse for a book on amateur astronomy.......2000-12-14

I pity the novice who purchases this book with the intention of learning about amateur astronomy. The book is a demonstration of what happens when someone rushes it to publication, does not KNOW the subject and builds poorly on a work that wasn't very good in the first place. There are so many terrifically awful errors in this book, it would take another book to document them. Pictures of microscopes where telescopes should be, refractor telescopes described as Dobsonians, etc, etc. The illustration/pictures are also slipshod, out of focus and poorly rendered. I cannot believe a suposedly reputable publishing house could release this "joke" of a text on amateur astronomy. It should be withdrawn from the market NOW and burned. -Richard Anderson

1 out of 5 stars Badly in need of copy editing.......2000-07-05

It's amazing McGraw-Hill let this one out at all. There are typographical and syntactical errors on almost every page. I can't comment on technical accuracy, as I am a beginner at astronomy. But I do know when I've seen the same photograph twice with different, and inconsistent, captions. The publisher did a real disservice to the author of this edition--and to the memory of the author of the original version--by rushing this to market without at least showing it to a copy editor.

1 out of 5 stars Warning: bad book!.......2000-03-04

This is the worst astronomy book I've encountered in forty years as an amateur astronomer! It is full of errors and has some of the poorest illustrations (out-of-focus, incorrectly labeled) I've ever seen in a commercial publication. Anyone interested in buying and using telescopes would be much better served by NightWatch by Terence Dickinson, The Backyard Astronomer's Guide by Dickinson and Dyer, or Phil Harrington's Star Ware.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......1999-09-18

As an amateur in astronomy, I found this book very educative. It covers all aspects of astronomy - from naked eye view of the sky to deep space objects, binocular to large telescope obesrvation, etc. Though it was written in 1989, the book will continue to be a reference book to all interested in astronomy.

This is the basis of the first part of the book. The second part details observing techniques for practical astronomers, working with a range of different instruments.

                          Book Description

Since the earliest times one of the brightest lights in the heavens has been that of Jupiter, mythical king of the gods and the largest planet in the solar system. It was only natural that peoples from the dawn of history would be interested in such a planet and, indeed, Jupiter was one of the first objects to be observed with the telescope. Even today Jupiter captures the public interest like no other planet: a vast gaseous world, home to violent storms (larger than the Earth) that have raged for centuries. Galileo's Planet: Observing Jupiter before Photography presents the history of humankind's quest to understand the giant planet in the era before photography, a time when the only way to observe the universe was with the human eye. The book provides a comprehensive and fascinating account of the people involved in this quest, their observations, and the results of their findings. Many of the planetary features studied in detail by today's space probes were once glimpsed by keen-eyed, amateur astronomers. These Earth-bound explorers made up for their modest instruments and viewing conditions with their patience, perseverance, and passion for the night sky. Their greatest challenge was the fifth planet from the Sun and the search for its imagined surface-a revelation of the "real Jupiter." In the process, these part-time observers redefined the meaning of the word "planet." The book recounts their story from the earliest times right up until the invention of the camera.
