Book Description
This completely rewritten new edition begins with a historical perspective of the place of the solar system in the universe. Evidence from meteorites is used to describe how the planets were formed and the giant planets are considered in the light of the discovery of new extrasolar giants. Other chapters discuss satellites, comets, centaurs, asteroids and why Pluto is not a planet. Explanations on why Earth and Venus turned out so differently, and how Mars and Mercury are the survivors of many similar bodies, are also discussed.

A Comparison of the Dynamical Evolution of Planetary Systems: Proceedings of the Sixth Alexander von Humboldt Colloquium on Celestial Mechanics Bad Hofgastein (Austria), 21-27 March 2004
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402042183 |
Book Description
The papers in this volume cover a wide range of subjects covering the most recent developments in Celestial Mechanics from the theoretical point of nonlinear dynamical systems to the application to real problems. We emphasize the papers on the formation of planetary systems, their stability and also the problem of habitable zones in extrasolar planetary systems. A special topic is the stability of Trojans in our planetary system, where more and more realistic dynamical models are used to explain their complex motions: besides the important contribution from the theoretical point of view, the results of several numerical experiments unraveled the structure of the stable zone around the librations points. This volume will be of interest to astronomers and mathematicians interested in Hamiltonian mechanics and in the dynamics of planetary systems.

Evolution of Hydrothermal Ecosystems on Earth (and Mars) - No. 202 (CIBA Foundation Symposia Series)
CIBA Foundation Symposium Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 047196509X |
Book Description
Hydrothermal ecosystems can be expected to have existed on Earth since life arose. A hyperthermophilic lifestyle has been proposed for the common ancestor of life and submarine hydrothermal vents are a candidate site for the origin of life. An origin of life at high temperatures appears most probable, although an alternative hypothesis has hyperthermophiles as the only survivors of bolide impacts during the last stages of planetary accretion. Our interest in these ecosystems stems in part from research to develop strategies for the search for fossil life on Mars. This may well be our best opportunity in the near future to test whether life on Earth is a `unique experiment, or whether there is, or was, life elsewhere in the Solar System (and by extension, the Universe). In search for analogous fossil systems on Earth it is unfortunate that the palaeobiology of ancient hydrothermal ecosystems is almost completely unknown. This is because of lack of research on this topic, not absence of deposits on which to work. As a result of mineral exploration, many fossil subaqueous and subaerial spring systems are known: numerous gold and base metal deposits of all ages back to Archaean are in such `exhalative, `epithermal and `Kuroko-style systems. This book focuses attention on the history of high temperature ecosystems, bringing together biologists working on extant systems, especially from the point of view of microbiology and molecular phylogeny, with palaeobiologists working on ancient examples or who are familiar with microbial palaeobiology, geologists who know how to find such systems and who know what their tectonic, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics are, and planetary geologists who have a chance of finding such systems elsewhere.Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview........2001-05-01
Review-type papers on relevant topics are written by leading scientists in the field, including: hydrothermal systems as sites for emerging life (E.L. Shock), water on Mars (M. Carr), and evidence for hydrothermal systems on Mars (J. Farmer).
The papers were presented as part of a conference, and the book also includes transcripts of discussions between the authors/attendees. There are short question-and-answer sections following each paper, as well as several longer discussion sessions on specific topics. I found that to be a unique approach, and very interesting.
I have used this book as a reference many times -- but then, I do research on this subject!

Evolution of the Earth and Other Planetary Bodies
R. Teisseyre , and J. Leliwa-Kopystynski Manufacturer: Elsevier Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444988335 |
Book Description
The Earth's evolution is a part of the evolution of the Solar System and of matter itself. Abundances of chemical elements can be explained only by going back to the formation of planets and earlier, to the nucleosynthesis processes. Comparisons with other planets, at different stages of development are necessary in the study of the formation and growth of the Earth's core. The same can be said of the global mobility of the outer layers of the Earth - the lithosphere. Consequently, the Earth's evolution can not be treated separately, but should be described within a broader framework.
This fifth volume in the series presents ideas on evolution of the Universe, the Planetary System and the Earth. It explains the formation and early evolution of the Earth and Planets, presenting an introduction and providing background to problems of the Earth's evolution and plate tectonics – the problems to be presented in the last volume of the s

The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System (HBK) (Graduate Series in Astronomy)
Michael M. Woolfson Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 075030457X |
Book Description
The origin of the solar system has been a matter of speculation for many centuries, and since the time of Newton it has been possible to apply scientific principles to the problem. A succession of theories, starting with that of Pierre Laplace in 1796, has gained general acceptance, only to fall from favor due to its contradiction in some basic scientific principle or new heavenly observation. Modern observations by spacecraft of the solar system, the stars, and extra-solar planetary systems continuously provide new information that may be helpful in finding a plausible theory as well as present new constraints for any such theory to satisfy. The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System begins by describing historical (pre-1950) theories and illustrating why they became unacceptable. The main part of the book critically examines five extant theories, including the current paradigm, the solar nebula theory, to determine how well they fit with accepted scientific principles and observations. This analysis shows that the solar nebula theory satisfies the principles and observational constraints no better than its predecessors. The capture theory put forward by the author fares better and also indicates an initial scenario leading to a causal series of events that explain all the major features of the solar system.

Planetary Systems and the Origins of Life (Cambridge Astrobiology)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 052187548X |
Book Description
Several major breakthroughs in the last decade have helped contribute to the emerging field of astrobiology. Focusing on these developments, this fascinating book explores some of the most important problems in this field. It examines how planetary systems formed, and how water and the biomolecules necessary for life were produced. It then focuses on how life may have originated and evolved on Earth. Building on these two themes, the final section takes the reader on a search for life elsewhere in the Solar System. It presents the latest results of missions to Mars and Titan, and explores the possibilities of life in the ice-covered ocean of Europa. This interdisciplinary book is an enjoyable overview of this exciting field for students and researchers in astrophysics, planetary science, geosciences, biochemistry, and evolutionary biology.
